  • In this short overview there is a lot of information about growing sweet corn in raised beds. In the central Texas region, the soil quality is poor, and raised beds are the best option for growing vegetables such as corn that require well-draining soil and need consistent moisture.

    Thank you so much!!!! For years I’ve been trying to get into growing my own food! Back when I was a kid, my grandparents had a small farm land in PR. I learned a lot about work and the satisfaction of harvesting your own food! I also work as a helper for one of the local farmers during the summer. I’m glad I found your channel! I’ll keep watching and implementing your advice as I go through this journey! Thanks for your advice!

    Do you try companion planting with pole beans in your corn? Supposed to deter the corn ear worms... just wondering if you have had any luck. I'm in DFW and for 2 years have had complete corn failure. Gonna try a different configuration and your watering tips this year.

    I planted potatoes in 15 gallon pots. Is it OK if I till the growing medium in these pots into my corn bed before starting the Fall sweet corn? No bad side effects?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Рік тому

      That should be fine. My only recommendation would be to work the soil from the pots into the planting bed two weeks ahead of starting the corn. This will give the soil biology time to assimilate the organic matter from your pots.

    Thank you for the video! I'm going to try corn in a raised bed this year as rows don't produce much for me. I have a 4 x 4 bed. Do you think 25 is too dense for that space?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Рік тому +1

      I think that sounds pretty good! In my 4 x 8 bed I plant four rows one foot apart and space seeds 8 inches apart. I usually end up with about 44-48 plants.

    • @dashulamite
      @dashulamite Рік тому

      @@gottgaame I'm not convinced that the garden table thing will work for growing corn. The root system isn't much but I just don't think it will work and I'm also not entirely clear about what the point of the table is?

    What dimension boards do you use for your corn raised bed?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Рік тому +2

      They're 2" x 8" and the subsoil was amended to a depth of six inches so that gives me about 12 inches of soil depth.

    Do you recommend a specific variety of sweet corn for best growing in a raised bed?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 місяці тому

      I’ve done well with ‘Golden Bantam Improved’ from Seed Savers Exchange 👍🏼✨

    • @roddhall
      @roddhall 2 місяці тому

      @@newgardenroad Oh, man! Golden Bantam Improved was one of the two on my list. But just before I saw your reply I ordered a pack of Orchard Baby seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I chose them because 1) The recommended planting density is greater then Golden Bantam Improved, 2) The plant height of Golden Bantam Improved is quite a bit taller than Orchard Baby (I'll be growing in an 8' x 4' bed, 18" deep, without much wind protection around it, and thought maybe shorter plants would have an advantage, 3) Since Orchard Baby was developed in Canada, I thought it might be a good choice for our shorter growing season here in Wisconsin.
      Have you ever grown Orchard Baby and if so, how did it compare with Golden Bantam ... flavor, wind resistance, production, ...?

    I’ve planted 2 corns in a pot due to space and they’re growing but didn’t realize you have to grow them in a group/block to pollinate successfully?! They’ve been growing for 2 weeks now, is it too late to plant more in my raised bed? I’m in zone 8

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Місяць тому +1

      It's probably not too late to plant more in your zone, but look search for a local extension service vegetable planting guide. You can aid corn pollination by tapping on the stalks just below the tassels once the silks emerge.

    What soils do you fill the bed with?

    • @newgardenroad

      It was a local bulk blend from The Natural Gardener about 15 years ago. About 40% compost with some decomposed granite, humate, and composted topsoil.

    • @newgardenroad

      It's possible, but I wouldn't expect it to produce full ears of corn again, likely just leaves.
