  • Have you ever wanted to grow and harvest fresh, sweet corn at home, but have not much space to do that? Today I show you how I grow corn each year in containers, using very little space. Corn will occupy vertical space, but it is a very neat and low-maintenance plant. It is a beautiful attraction in the garden, and will produce a good crop per container, given good soil and plenty of water. I am using the Stowell variety by Ferry Morse this year, because it seems to keep the corn fresher and table-ready for a longer period of time. The germination rate was excellent (more than 95%) Each stalk produced 2-3 ears, and that is pretty good! Corn was excellent, full ears with no disease, fungal, or rot. Multiple containers should not be placed in a line, if you are planting a lot of containers of corn. Instead, they should be placed in a group to increase the pollination process. Place some seeds, but not too many, and aim for 5-6 in very large containers, or less in mid to large containers. Feed corn seedlings a good balanced fertilizer and water regularly. Add compost to the top soil every two weeks and Check for thrips and aphids near the new leaves, inside mostly, and at the silks when corn begins to show up.

Mmm! I love the taste of grilled maize. Not keen on eating it boiled, but barbecuing or grilling gives it a wonderful nutty flavour. (In my experience an electric grill in the kitchen is just as good as charcoal outdoors, and a lot more convenient.)
Regarding the best time to harvest... I'm not sure if this applies to all varieties, but if when you pierce a kernel with your thumbnail and the juice is milky, it's ready to eat; if the juice is clear, it's not quite ripe and should stay on the plant for another week or so. 🌽 👀
PS: If you're wondering why I called it 'maize', it's because I'm a Brit, and over here the word 'corn' has always meant both corn-on-the-cob [sweetcorn] AND wheat. Yep. The grain. Cereal. 🌾 Fields of gold, waving in the breeze. The stuff you make flour and bread from. Calling corn (on the cob) either sweetcorn or maize avoids confusion. 🙂

Maybe plant some beans with corn together cuz beans pump nitrogen into soil and corn is a heavy feeder of nitrogen.
