    This is awesome timing Thank You!!! My Autistic son became interested in our garden this year , I watched him shove watermelon seeds into pots of dirt thinking how precious he is, and just let him try. I was shocked yesterday to see watermelon plants coming up, my son is so excited! I'm going to sit with him and let him watch your earlier videos with me :) Cheers Lovely! Thanks for everything you have taught me :)

    I have a little more space so I bought the 40 gallon black totes from Lowe’s. I drilled drainage holes in the bottom and put them on mulch on a bed liner in a little planter. The black containers really help keep the soil warm and the good drainage ensures you never get rot. I kind of want to try some of hose wrested pots you have though. Thanks for the video and tips. This will help my yield a lot!

    there are also minimally vining varieties such as mini love and sugar pot. these have vine lengths of 12 to 24 inches long and produce up to 6 cantelope sized watermelons.

    I am experimenting this year - I have the regular growbags, large 'dumpy' bags and some just planted outdoors - for next year I have also bought felt planters. I love melons, grow a number of varieties - this year a yellow coloured water melon. I use Velcro tape (Velcro band one wrap tape) on all of my climbers, can be broken off by hand and reused, it is also sold on Amazon.) For pollination I use cotton buds whenever necessary. Great video, thanks - from a wet and windy UK!

      Mine grew out of my compost suddenly and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm taking the tote route so far. I know it came from a large watermelon. Did yours end up on the ground after it started producing melons?

    • @CopperHueCollectionsChippewa
      @CopperHueCollectionsChippewa 6 років тому +15

      Otulissa3 yes, I produced six throughout the entire summer. I put small buckets under them while on the ground to help them to continue to grow. I also use trellises for the vines.

      That's awesome!! If you have lots of bees around the garden, usually you don't have to worry about hand pollinating. I had to hand pollinate a few plants last year because I didn't have as many bees as I do this year😁 Thanks for sharing your experience with us🌸 Happy Planting!

    • @sashasoule4585
      @sashasoule4585 5 років тому +5

      I believe the reason they hand pollinate these is because when bees pollinate them they may cross pollinate different varieties. The seed of the fruit will yield hybrids in the next season. Hand pollinating ensures (for the most part) true to parent seeds.

    use jute for training the vines, that tape once used usually not used again and it doesnt decompose very well. use jute or metal, at least those will not end up floating in the ocean

    I use a 2 gallon watering can. I fill almost to top with filtered water. I add 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt, 2 tablespoons Miracle Grow for tomatoes, 1/4 cup alaska Fish fertilizer, 1/2 cup Kroger skim milk, (this covers the N-P-K and calcium, magnesium and sulfur needed by all veggies) then stir and mix well. I divide this 2 gallons among 2 watermelons and 2 cantelopes. Do the same recipe for my tomatoes, squash , and bell peppers. I am having my best results ever with this once every 7 to 10 day feedings. Big thick stalks, large green leaves, dozens of flowers and fruits everywhere. I do this extreme because all my plants are in containers. It's usually hot here so I water almost every day which leaches a lot out of the containers.

    I like your videos Kim, interesting and not dull to watch. This year I am actually growing a few different varieties of watermelon and cantaloupe/muskemelon, some on pots and some on the ground. I am doing a little experiment here in my garden every year. 😂 We've been organically gardening and raising quails and chicken for several years and even doing Aquaphonic gardening. I wanted to let you know that I used the Vermisttera Tea and castings on my plant this year, it was a great addition to my garden bedding and foliar fertilizer. I will post some pictures or videos on how my garden looks now, planted them right around end of April. They are just starting to have female flowers due to the weather just starting to really heat up. I live in the East Bay. Hope you continue to post some more watermelon and cantaloupe videos.

    Hello, and thanks for the videos! I'm curious how many watermelon plants do you have per pot? I saw another video of yours and it mentioned a cantaloupe and a sugar baby, so I assume you could do 2-3 per 20 gallon pot? I'm also curious if there are difference between these "Smart pots" and other "grow bag" type items out there? Are there advantages to one over the other? It also looks like having more space for the tendrils to grab onto, will give more advantage to grow for these vines?
    Thank you.

    Hi nice video! I've been growing watermelon in a jiffy peat bag and they are a little over a week old. Could you tell me when I'll have to move them to a pot, please? Much appreciated.

    I use old music tapes, about the same thing and are brown and can't be seen. I use containers because my new home has hard clay and I lost all my watermelon last year... I am growing all vining plants in one area and I allow them to crawl along the ground that has been covered with black floral cloth... I love your little wood "patio" I will do that, I have just the right place. Looks so lovely and neat. :) Thanks for your video...

    Do you have any recommendations for specific soil? My parents got soil from a worm farm but it just isn’t measuring up to be that great of soil...I’ve been using Joe’s Organics fertilizer on it and it seemed to grow really well but the flower buds seem quite small.

    Can the liquid fertilizer be put into an Earthbox reservoir or does it need to go directly into the potting mix? Also, do you ever have a problem with squash bugs and if so how do you deal with it. Thanking you in advance for your videos and help to us all.
