Once the injured one is free of the predators that is its chance to run away w/ the other buffaloes. If it’s too injured and can’t keep up with the herd they are on their own and have to accept their fate.

The buffalo was scared for the whole time till 2:47, when the partner buffalo arrived, the victim buffalo suddenly wasn't scared anymore, and turned around to face the lions calmly. If this buffalo survived, it would have enough experience to teach the next generation, but it was killed and the this successful hunting would help the lions to teach the next generation! Well, the lions need to eat, the lions got a big family to feed. Cycle of life. Life wasn't easy.

Its heartbreaking to watch prey getting eaten alive. He didnt even get quick death unlike others. He might have been alive for almost a day. Most of the prey get attacked on the throat part and hence die immediately but here it's not like that.

As far as they’re concerned, taking the buffalo out in a less painful manner would just take more effort, more energy and more risk of injury. It’s all pragmatism.
