I noticed a reciprocating noise on my 2005 Prius coolant contol valve recently (no error code though.) I thought that the part had been working hard for quite a number of years and might be ready to give up. So I had it replaced. The new valve, however, still makes pulsing/clicking sound (no error on the computer and I can feel the flow going through the hoses.) Isn't the valve supposed to rotate to a position and stop? My mechanic thinks it is fine. I am a person who likes to tinker with thing - like to know why. Is the valve oscillating between two positions? Would that not cause the position sensor to report an error. Toyota's manual seems to suggest that there are three voltages (2.5, 3.5 and 4.5v) for controlling the three positions. Not sure if the power stays on constantly, or only comes on when needing to move. Any thoughts? Thanks

I've order a new valve, but it won't be here for 4-5 days. Can the car be driven safely ? The trouble code is intermentant. Okay to drive or should I park it.
I am having intermittent cabin heat issues on my Gen 2 Prius. Do you think this part could be the cause? Seems like it to me but my Prius isn't throwing a code yet. Perhaps its getting stuck sometimes but not enough to throw an error.
The ECM will log a fault for even the smallest malfunction of the valve, so that being the cause is unlikely. I would check the fluid level in the radiator, NOT the surge tank, when the engine is stone cold. Even a small under-filling can cause poor heater performance.

I have had code p1121 for 4000 miles and have never used fluid or overheated . Any ideas ? Heat also works well . Could it just be stuck open ?

Drive it! It primarily aids in engine warm-up, will not damage anything if not working correctly.
