Fantastic conversation I was just speaking to someone earlier today about how the nursing profession has been reduced to lack of care for others, because of the younger generations, lack of critical thinking skills because they can carry their textbooks in their pocket via the phone and they can just look up the answers rather than Using critical thinking skills and actually genuinely caring for their patients and this has become a disservice to those patients.
Adults and previous generations lack critical thinking too, the problem are not new generations or young people... this moto has been with us since Plato's times...
You are so right and being someone on the receiving end of nursing, you are irreplaceable.
Nursing is hemorrhaging not from the young people’s apathy (though that is a societal moral problem) but from the over regulation in nursing regulatory. Good nurses are being eliminated from nursing boards.

As long as we use it for good it is good. I used chatgpt to write a poem for my daughter’s wedding and it was a beautiful poem about a marriage made in heaven and a gift from God.

This was an excellent discussion on AI. I always enjoy listening to your and Fathers discussions. I'm of the believe that this new technology will do much more harm than good. It will take many in a direction that will not be good for their souls.
I realize that we've all been "aided" by technology to certain degrees in many areas of our lives. If I had a choice though I'd still go back when the focus was more on the condition of the soul and not so much on the comfort of the body. After all I'll share what I share to many this quote based on Philippians 27 I think. Only one life will soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last.
We're all just passing through. This AI thing is another creation that I believe will not serve the souls of many in a good way.
That's my 2 cents.

Many good points here. People need 'occupation'. There are some jobs that ought to be mechanised but people will not do well if AI overtakes everything.

Thank you for this. In my perspective, AI does not "replaces" our cognition, but assists us in any means for cognition. Perhaps, a good project would be, to get answers from an AI, and the application part of the project would be the human part.
It's no coincidence that there has been a development of human looking frames to carry technology that would be no different than if it were housed on a laptop. By pushing a narrative that data is the measure of value and then deserving of power and control, it becomes clear that this is very deliberately to blend and confuse what it means to be human..
Really enjoyed the thinking through this interview, especially about how are projecting our faulty understanding of humanity onto AI. Thanks Fr Bouvette. I have always thought that the AI is not the problem, it is the people in control of the AI, which goes back to the problem of sin and the fall.

An objective AI intellect trained on the magisterium of the Church could help us augment the abilities of our conscience and help us avoid scrupulosity. We are supposed to have well-formed Catholic Consciences, Many people try to rationalize aways some sinful thing they want to do. The system I propose would not allow that. Conversely, some people have scrupulous consciences that are effectively not tuned correctly. An objective conscience like I suggest would greatly help people who suffer from scruples. Particularly if it were tied to an authoritative blockchain of Catholic teachings. Such a person could ask the system for guidance having a high level of trust they could trust its judgment. Over time they would get a more intuitive sense of what a properly-formed Catholic Conscience looks like and they could operate more freely without the tool. It would be highly helpful for everyone.
I love this idea! Maybe also include a function that say “go get some real human interaction” “go pray your rosary” that lets the user know they need to take a break. As Catholic we must first and foremost exercise temperance and make sure that we are following God’s will. Maybe it was implied in you post but it would be good if the AI would post the link to where it found the information that way we can actually read the source because AI is prone to error especially if the software hasn’t been updated and is using old information. Dealing with AI is very meticulous but this kind of rigor is expected if it’s going to be a learning tool for Catholic lay people. A beta version could be teste with theology major students and then it can be opened to catechists and finally the rest of us. Imagine using this as tool to evangelize non believers and lapsed Catholics!?
Way back in the 1970s when I was about 10 yo, I remember announcing that I was going to become President (of the US) and make everbody go back to horse and buggy days....I can't remember what problem I was addressing, but I kinda feel like my childhood innocence was on to something wise beyond my years. Hubby and I are on day 302 of Bible in a Year with Father Mike and so having freshly listened to story after story of how the Jews who allowed bits and pieces of unGodly cultures to mix with their own always led to their downfall, I fear technology may not be as "it can be good" as we think. Makes me wonder if perhaps hardcore unmechanized Mennonites are on to something. I have observed the inclination to depend on Googling anything and everything in myself and it is disturbing. Gut feeling is NOT GOOD....
But what do we do about it now?
Had it not been for the internet, and UA-cam in particular, I might not have wised up and run back to my Catholic roots after nearly 4 decades of foolish living....perhaps God really can use everything for our good!!!

I totally agree with Father. AI will never become a sentient being. It's a utility that can be used nefariously or for the advancement of society. It just depends on the user. (Controller) It does not gave a soul.

How can we be absolutely certain that AI will not become self aware (not just simulating behavior) at some point in the future, maybe distant future? Isn't this a scientific question? I mean...If you asked people for ex. few thousand years ago about the possibility of flying through the air/airplanes, going to the moon etc. they would most likely say that it will not be possible or that only God can do such things and yet it is possible now...
AI cannot become "self"-aware because they do not have a "self". Consciousness is purely human. It's what distinguishes us from animals and everything else in Creation.
@@crystald3346 Well, I agree that it may not be possible for the AI to become self-aware. It will probably only be able to simulate being aware/ behavior... Also, scientifically speaking we don't currently know what exactly consciousness even is. Furthermore, maybe there are other intelligent conscious creatures in Creation we don't currently know about.

I am a wee bit unnerved that someone can now just go to an animated image based on the Turin Shroud that blabs out Protestant doctrine. The Internet has already ruined many shopping malls, video rental businesses and all kinds of professions all for the sake of convenience. I just wonder how far all of this will go.

Do this technologies do not have potential to make us even more creative? Lets use the calculator example, since i have a calculator i can focus on more creative tasks like developing a beter predictive model for the development of a certain population of lets say fish without having to spend to much time in the calculations them selfs. May be we can leave work, even "creative" ones we may be willing to do now with our current understanding of the world to the machines and spend our time in more fullfilling activities like, going to the church to learn God's word... the Church could monopolize the robotic-AI means of production, distrubute ethically the outcomes among the people and us humans live to wait the second coming of Christ
I respect your channel as I too am a traditional Catholic following an engineering career but are you trying to say even if our intelligent like selves find another species of intelligent life in another world (other galaxies maybe) are they not entitled to being respected like a human? Yeah, it looks like that's what it's implied in the conversation. And it is totally in conflict with the official position of the catholic church in Rome which recognizes other potential intelligent alien species we may encounter as deserving of respect and dignity and integrable in the catholic faith
AI can help catholicism propagation. Reason and faith are both important. Getting accurate info can be gained through proper AI use.

For me it's like Babel all over...
Just to push against this stark outlook: Babel fractured our language and ability to communicate, AI makes it possible for anyone speaking any modern language to converse with anyone speaking any other language. If anything it could be said to resemble the gift of languages rather than the fallout of Babel.
So many writings from influential Christians of history that have never been translated are about to be available in any modern vernacular language.
To be clear, I'm not saying AI has any spirit, Holy or otherwise. It's a tool like any other. It is those who lack a spiritual understanding of the world who will be convinced these machines are actually alive.

I see the concern, but AI was not created of being used for the occult like an ouija board. AI instead is really to make brainstorming easier whether it be helping you organizing your ideas for a presentation or help you plan out an event. If you use AI for good and don’t disobey God, then you have nothing to worry about. If you have an concerns always pray and seek advice from your pastor. 🙏🏼✝️
I loved your interview! AI has been around for years, but it only recently became accessible to the masses. It’s not the technology that is bad, it’s those who are programming it.
Just like in Sci-Fi books and movies, throughout history there are those things create for a good then used to sin and/or destroy.
The best example is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, where the creation destroys the creator. I look at Lucifer, God’s perfect creation as an Angel, who turned against God and brought 1/3 of the angels with him.
Everything is usually created for a good, but so many use it for evil. The guillotine was invented to be a more humane way of execution, that turned and became pure evil during the French Revolution,
It became so pronounced that they used all their resources making guillotines and for almost two years killed anyone and everyone just to destroy anyone who opposed them.
And look who ended up as leaders during the revolution - some, if not most, meet their death to the guillotine.
AI is just another advancement that people are already using to do evil. I use it for good but it's so easy to abuse it's power.
Cloning is the same thing-science playing God and becoming evil.

How do we now what has and what doesn't have a soul? What if good decides to put a soul in another animal or in a machine? Would we be able to tell?
If the Church is going to be behind every technological development like in case of improvement or maintainace of health. Would it mean it would suport better abortion tretment in case lets say the life of the mother is at risk due to fetus malformation or whatever other reason? Or use of anticoceptive measures to improve mental health of someone with AIDS whom needs sex to improve it's mental health? The Church will never support the intentional and direct killing of children in the womb, or even outside of the womb. Please get that straight, first of all. Second, the pleasure from sex is simply a band-aid approach to "mental illness". The Church will never support that either, because fornication and lust are mortal sins which send you to Hell. Sins are objectively wrong and this never has nor will it ever change.

@21:29 This is where things get complicated for Catholics. People need jobs. When the private sector can't meet them half-way - or people go unemployed for a little too long and become unemployable - people need to be met half way with a permanent federal job program that pays at least a living wage (ideally with free healthcare and childcare - all of which are eminently affordable by the creator of the currency - the federal government), but that's socialism. (Money doesn't "grow" on rich people).
Since people in-the-know in Catholicism know socialism was started by rebellious freemasons, they are biased against connecting the dots to our advantage in the American experiment. Also, perhaps more importantly, people think their federal taxes "pay for" things. The federal government doesn't need our taxes to do anything but control inflation, etc. It is the "king" of the currency.
But this is why I am a Catholic who supports a permanent federal job program (that doesn't overly compete with the private sector by design that pays a living wage).
This is also known as the "Green" New Deal. Is this really so awful? Someone please tell me where am I wrong?

"Free childcare". God designed the family so that the mother stays home and devotes her time and energy to the people who need her and deserves her the most - her children. A boss does not. If women stay home, and homeschool, then it would be easier for men to have jobs again. As a homeschooling mother of four, living with a verbally abusive husband, I wouldn't wish my situation on anyone. However, if I divorced him and ran off to work, shoved my kids off into schools which brainwash them into thinking men are women, that would be even worse. Women need to carry their crosses given by God to stay at home for the kids. This is Earth, not Heaven. We can't depend on governments to support the nuclear family. Governments cannot be trusted to provide jobs to everyone. People will simply cease to perform and pull their weight because of the "security". It is human nature.

We’ll be able to scoop people up on the bottom better though due to the programs inherent economic stabilizing effect - but that’s off subject.

Sentience is not the biggest problem. We already have sentient, conscious beings that can *use* AI... *that's* the problem... We can either bring heaven to earth or take earth down to hell...
Fr. Cristino does not accept a reality in which a AI could become truly conscious and self-aware. But he has not explained why. He seems to assume this as a premise. I can guess why, given my understanding of the Church's teachings, but it would be good to articulate this. I'll ask Google 😏
How can AI become "aware"? Aware of what? They do not have free will.
It is inherent of people to work. Work has always part of God's plan. A machine can never be self aware. Ai will never be proficient some day.
