3 Swing Tips for Hitting Golf Hybrids

  • Golf Hybrids are supposed to make shots easier for you, so why do so many amateur golfers struggle with hitting them? This video explores some common misconceptions about hitting hybrids and gives you some easy tips to help you start getting more results out of these versatile golf clubs!
Before anything though, you really should be getting yourself properly fit for a hybrid before putting one in your golf bag. Having the right fit for you hybrids is just as important as being properly fit for your driver.
    1. Ball position - Hybrids may look more like a wood, but they are meant to be played like an iron. Too often, golfers try to play them like a wood and end up having issues with consistency, and play the ball too far forward like a wood or driver. So start thinking more about how you approach your irons, which is a good segue into our next tip.
    2. Angle of attack - think again about what you are trying to do when hitting your irons. You want that negative angle of attack, and hitting a little down on the ball with your hybrids is actually a good thing!
    3. Have a go-to shot - hybrids are supposed to make things easier for you, so actually practice hitting your hybrid! Maybe you have a shorter par 4, could it be used in place of your driver? Understand your tendencies with your hybrid and start using it for more than just an advancing club on longer shots!
Bonus - embrace the versatility of your hybrids! Use it in a fairway bunker, maybe if you struggle around the greens, you can use it for bump and runs, or get a feel for how it plays on tight lies vs rough conditions.

Outstanding video! This year I finally broke down and bought a new set of clubs and got a proper fitting. Purchased Callaway Epic Max woods and graphite shafted Apex irons and a graphite shafted 4 hybrid. The iron setups are plus 1 inch and 3 upright, the hybrid is plus a half inch and the woods regular length and flex. I kept my 3 Cleveland graphite shafted wedges and had them adjusted to pair to the Apex irons. The only club that has been a disappointment for me has been the 4 hybrid. I want to thank you because your video exactly described what I have doing wrong with the hybrid and how I have subsequently limited its use to 190 yard recovery shots. Thanks for the invaluable tips and insights, I have and will continue to apply your suggested swing, ball placement position, and use strategies. Thanks again, great video!

I found your video 3 weeks ago re: Hitting Hybrids. 25 years ago I hit fairway wood pretty well. Now that I am back to playing again over the last 5 years, my odds of hitting a Fairway Wood were zip to none. Ithem but, since I had not been hitting woods, what did I have to loose. I will take 180 and 195 yards all day.
Over my last 4 rounds I have had 1 Eagle and 8 Birdies (par 4's & 5's)and taken an average of 7-8 strokes off my game. Confidence is building rapidly. Thanks again for the video.

This video is excellent! Someone else suggested sweeping the ball off the ground with a hybrid, but I didn't find that effective. Your advice to hit down on the ball as we do with an iron was the game changer for me. Your other suggestions regarding use around the green, off he tee, narrow fairways are also very useful. Last year I put 2 hybrids in my bag to replace my 2I and 3I. And I then went out and spent all of last year hooking my hybrid shots all over the place. I really had NO 180-195 yard shot because I couldn't trust the club...or so I thought.
Ball position...ball position and...ball position. I was absolutely playing my hybrids off my left heel (righty) because it never occurred to me to "play them like irons." I can tell you that my basic hybrid swing setup is now one ball width forward of center and I now have a dependable, reliable swing, shot and position for my hybrid clubs.

Great instruction, easy to understand. I now hit down on all my hybrids and it solved many problems. I don’t use a tee for my hybrids on tee shots because the strikes are not as solid for me for some reason as compared to just hitting it off the ground. I carry a Titleist 910H 24 & 27 degree hybrid. I also use them quite a bit for chipping around the green. If the lie is tight and if using a wedge is questionable, I don’t hesitate to chip with a hybrid and usually it’s a better result anyway.

I like using my 3 hybrid when I’ve got 100-170 yards to go but tree limbs are blocking trajectory of my normal iron shot or if limbs are in my swing plane. I treat it like a bump and run putter swing that a lot of people use a 7 or 8 iron on around the green, except the hybrid launches it, even with just a 2’-3’ back swing, and it’s easy to hit squarely with such a short swing. Of course, just like any bump and run shot you have to factor in conditions and slope etc to properly control distance, but it has saved me several times and gotten me on or near several greens I had no business getting close to otherwise.

    • @USGOLFTVshow
      @USGOLFTVshow  2 роки тому +1

Perfect timing on this video. I've been frustrated hitting hybrids in the past. Very inconsistent, so I'm thinking I need to switch to a stiffer shaft, as you did. Can you incorporate fairway woods and hybrids into a video about hitting off slopes? I live in a mountainous area and the courses rarely are flat.

Great video with very solid tips. A question for you. I'm a 79 y/o golfer with some back issues and have lost considerable distance. In an effort to regain the distance, I find myself trying to swing harder which as you might expect, causes a lot of other problems. I currently play Titleist AP 1 irons with senior flex shafts. I've been intrigued with s few of the hybrid iron sets (Wilson, Cleveland, Cobra) as a way of gaining some distance but also helping me keep the ball in play. I'm currently a 12.9 hndc but am going in the wrong way. Comments/ideas.

Wayne Kivi thank you for posting. This is why I love golf, no matter our age 79 or 9 we can always improve! As our swing speed goes down the hybrids are a good option. They will make it easier to get the ball up in the air which will provide more distance and make shots into the green easier. Hope that helps, thanks for watching and posting!

Just to not slice and get some “impressive” yardage. In practical situations I don’t really know what type of yardage I should be aiming for. Hit as long as you have to to get repetition and a flow, so you dont ever forget the feel and can pick it up really fast next time you go out and hit. I just got a new set of irons that included 4h,5h, 6h. I’m grateful for this video especially the last bit. I assume for using a hybrid on a tee shot, I’d use a very short golf tee. Also, what hybrid would you use to roll the ball onto the green?
Sometimes my short pitching wedge goes too far in that spot and a ground ball might be easier to control. Thanks for the tips! My second year playing and it’s an interesting adventure!

Great questions, we like to have a little more pressure on the lead foot at address, maybe 60/40 to allow the body to unweight in the backswing without swaying. We also like the hands to fall basically below the shoulders to get you a proper distance from the ball. I love what you said about a basic fitting. When I bought my last set I hit several clubs then ordered them with shafts that matched my swing speed and didn't go any further accept having the lie adjusted 1 degree upright because of my height. It was simple and easy. Now the only excuse I have is me.

The only time I can make my 5 hybrid work for me is teeing off at a par 3. On the fairway, at best, my 3 hybrid does a low straight drive (if I can even properly connect with it) that gets some distance but nothing that I can't almost do with my 5 iron. My hybrids have been the bane of my golfing since I started 2 years ago. I think this video will help me considerably.
