Dude I almost bought that one haha. I'm glad you got it though. Always wanted to see you review an hp model! I collect them. Love the gold and chrome too.
Great to see you checking out one of those. I picked up a new one in Mojave Fade back when Gibson ownership changed and GC had them on sale for like 2300-2400 USD. I love the belly cut, neck profile and that there is no chunky heel. Don't care about the robot tuners and never touched the dip switches (I agree that they are both gimmicky, but they don't really get in the way either, the bass side tuners working in the opposite direction is a bit annoying though)
The "high pass filter" option is a treble bleed. You won't hear it unless you change the volume. I've also noticed that if you pull up to reverse coil, it's a little more open in the tapped position, so a good compromise for both clean and distorted. I personally find the HP4 circuit quieter (less noise) than the one they used in the standard (and now the Modern and Classic?) and appreciate the reverse coil and treble bleed option.
Tapped is a P90 sound, per Gibson. Split is, well, split: What Do You Hear? Tap vs Split Explained Tap = Accesses the pickup coils through a filter. Effectively accents a particular frequency range for a “tuned tap”. Result = Fatter, P-90 style voice with balanced output. Also offers lower noise and hum than true single-coil. Split = Isolates one coil in the humbucker pair. Effectively changes a humbucker into a single-coil pickup. Result = Brighter single-coil sound with lower output than humbucking. NOTE: The pickups are Reverse Wind/Reverse Polarity to retain hum-canceling operation when both pickups are combined. Further DIP Switch Functions DIP Switch 3 is Neck Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed) DIP 3 off = out of circuit. DIP 3 on = in circuit. DIP switch 3 further controls your neck pickup. As a volume control is turned down, high frequencies tend to be attenuated. The resulting sound is darker as the volume is lowered due to the interaction of the coil inductance and the volume pot. The High Pass (Treble Bleed) circuit effectively offsets these losses by passing higher frequencies as the volume is lowered. Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes DIP Switch 4 = Bridge Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed) DIP 4 off = out of circuit. DIP 4 on = in circuit. DIP switch 4 further controls your bridge pickup, as above. Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes.
I have the 2018 HP2 model in a cobalt fade, picked it up new for 2/3 the price. But what spoke to me was the first time I struck a chord was the clarity and tone from the pickups. Imo if you use this guitar with a TS pedal and a tube amp, it really sings just like. Almost PAF like (not a PAF expert) as far as I can tell. Also that neck, if you have large hands, it plays so smooth. The thickness of the neck is tough to get used to though, but you need it with the wideness of it.
I like the sans-pickguard design. I like the clean look of the omitted pickup rings, but I generally don't mind rings. I understand what you're saying about the nut width, too. When I go from my 7 string back to the 6 string, the 6 string almost feels like a ukulele
Cant deny the nice tones coming from this LP. It would actually look pretty awesome under some nice stage lights. This being said, I wouldn't pay more that 1800.00 for it.
I think, whilst to look at they aren't much, what matters is the sound. I'm surprised to say this sounds stunning! What a beautiful sounding guitar, plus the variability in the tap/split function is excellent. Thank you for opening my eyes!
I have a 2018 HP standard in cobalt fade and I love it! The pickups and neck are amazing. I did swap the chrome truss rod cover for a plain black "standard" cover and the chrome knobs for amber top hat knobs because I like the look better. I think the HP standards are criminally underrated. I've had mine for 2 years and still get excited every time I open the case to play it. The thing is a "do all" work horse and will be my #1 for a very long time. I will say that the only thing that bugs me, and this is knit picky but mine has a lighter colored rosewood board. It is a great fretboard, and there's nothing wrong with it. I just wished they came with Ebony. My HP has a cobalt fade finish which almost looks black. The light brown fretboard stands out, to me at least. An ebony board would really look phenomenal in my opinion and fit the look of the guitar better.
The wide neck wasn't for me when I tried them, but I have arthritis so I need a very specific neck shape. The high pass filter probably helps when playing with high gain and down tuned.
As I get older I find a thicker neck is much more comfortable to play. I found a Telecaster with a 1.10” neck and it is really easy on my hand. The neck is so big my hand is no longer cramping up. Also, I think the thicker neck gives a guitar a little more resonance.
I actually own a 2016 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded HP that came with the G Force tuning system, and it's really a phenomenal guitar. The G Force system is actually very accurate. The one time I had an issue with it, I did a factory reset as per the instructions and haven't had a problem since. It came with Burstbucker Pro's and sounds and plays like butter.
These things sound a lot better than I had imagined them sounding. Ps. I LOVE your Funk/Blues playing. You really shine in that department. All my best! Great demo as always.
@@BeesWaxMinder Feel like that’s somewhat of a dick move on a video from a guy selling one, but I’m p sure it’s the cheapest Mojave Fade one on reverb ;)
@@Music-zz5il absolutely not, it still feels much like a normal les paul! I actually didn’t like the heel joint much, I much prefer either the standard Gibson neck joint or the way ESP do it in some of their eclipses. That’s actually it, the guitar doesn’t feel as modern as an ESP Eclipse, and doesn’t do the Les Paul thing as well as a regular les paul. The out of phase sound is great when layering in the studio though, and the neck pickup is phenomenal.
@@johnevered9640 i have an esp ltd 256 and its pretty comfortable! Especially the neck & body sounds like the HP isnt for me! Ideally id find a guitar that has the comfort of my strat & the feel of my les paul. I know gibson offer the axcess model but coming across lefties is extremely rare
I have 2 of these guitars, 1 in trans black the other is Mojave burst and I love them. I originally bought them for the colors but fell in love the more I played them. I only use the coil split/tap with my Boss acoustic pedal and they sound amazing with it. Other than that the Burstbuckers sound amazing. Very happy with them both.
I had the SG HP in the Pink Fade. After I got rid of the robot tuners it was nice, it it was really neck heavy and I let it go. The huge and heavy metal case was super cool IMO.
Is it a neck thru? The neck joint looks clean, and I didn't notice the neck tenon. Or it's just very good finishing? Looks like a nice studio guitar, with all these tonal options.
I have done got addicted to this channel…so I finally subscribed... no PU rings makes it look like a deluxe would have been cool to had Mini's in it as a Modern Deluxe... 23:24 the neck pickup is to close to the fretboard so u couldn't add a PU ring later, makes it look like a non Gibson product, along with no fret nibs... I don't see this being a great seller- but would make a collectors item if not many sold also.
My 99 Parker Fly doesn't have pickup rings and used the A string and B string pole piece to raise and lower the pickup. You have to get special made pickups from dimarzio if you want to replace them with something else because they are thinner than a normal Humbucker. Also Dimarzio doesn't do all models because some don't fit.
Hehe , me same. Its like "oh cool !!! So ugly... but cool !!!", both at the same time. I think the idea is cool, but still looks too odd, so its not 100% good looking design.
I like the colours but I dislike the pattern, it's like they took the worst parts of the worst burst finishes, lopped off the bottom part of the basic pattern, and jacked up the contrast even more. Gradual blends look better, sorry. Most burst finishes look like a 90s kid got his hands on Paint Shop Pro, discovered the gradient fill for the first time, and just *had* to show off that he knows how to use it. Subtlety. Jesus.
Great review Austin. I looked at the HP I back 4 years ago and liked it, but Richlite, Robotuners and the pickups being non-descriptive caused me to be turned me off. I never got to see the HP II, which had locking Grover tuners and a Rosewood fretboard. So, I got a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Mojave Burst on clearance from a major Gibson Authorized Dealer at the time at a 30% discount. There are no DIP switches, yet there are 4 knobs that do pull up. They are the (1) neck single coil , (2) bridge single coil, (3) out of phase, (4) true bypass. I only use the true bypass from time to time. Mine also has a rosewood asymmetrical, and compound radius with really nice Grover Locking tuners. It is weight relieved but with BurstBucker Pro Pickups, which sound awesome. For comparison, I also have a 2020 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop R0 VOS with unpotted pickups. My 2018 Les Paul Standard rates an 8 out of 10 and that is only because the Custom Shop is a 10 out of 10. There is no comparison to my 2017 Fender American Professional 3 Color with Rosewood Fretboard with H-S-S ShawBucker /Tim Shaw Pickups. The Fender in the ShawBucker Bridge position sounds really nice but rates a 6 out of 10 when compared to the Gibson Les Paul's that I have. If I did not have the Gibson's as a comparison, I would have rated the Fender a 10 out of 10. In the end, I sill would have stayed with the 2018 Les Paul Standard versus the HP II. Thank you for your very detailed review!!
Really liking this guitar and awesome sounds. Ironic that Gibson were producing these at possibly their lowest ebb and no one was interested. Now I’m thinking I want that guitar! Also, I bought an SG standard days before Gibson changed CEO and it is absolutely superb. Mind you, I tried about 20 very poor SGs before finding it. There were two at 66 Sounds (Denmark St Gibson dealer) and the guy there had set them up sooo well!! 😀
I spent a few days going back and forth about buying that one, then Trogly featured it in a reverb shopping video so I figured it was gone. Sure enough a day later it sold and i was sad but slightly less poor than i would have been. I didn’t expect it was him!!
Thanks brother I recently picked up the trad pro v and was trying to figure out the dip switch’s over all love the guitar but was kinda hard to figure it out but you’r video helped. Thanks
They used the exact same circuit in the 2020 Trad Pro V. The guitar itself was more traditional, and the pickups were different (underwound neck/ overwound bridge). More traditional colors
"What if I need to change a setting during a gig? Do they expect me to bring a screwdriver and undo the plate during a show?" Whoever Trogly was referencing when he said someone asked this has never played a gig in heir life; do they really think anyone, themselves included, is going to really be able to tell the difference between a tapped vs split pickup in a band mix?
Bytin all my vid content yo! Lol. I do really love these guitars. HP is underrated and very versatile. I missed my cobalt fade so much I picked up the hot pink fade.
The High Performance SGs and Les Pauls are actualluy one of the few things I miss from the late Juskciw... However you type his name era. I mean those are super cool, gorgeous pieces of art! ...Shame a normal person can't ever afford them, though.
Hi, hope you are well, I prefer the ones with the rings too, makes the humbucker's visual perspective as wider-meaner. You include a "Gear Used to Make the Show", but that beautiful black les paul with the perloid pickguard and the mother of gorgeous halo surrounding the name on the headstock? is not listed, take care
Did they fall short or was it that the market wouldn’t accept anything “modern” from Gibson? Too many guitarists are just too focused on things being like they’ve always been to facilitate innovation, especially from the big name, traditional, brands.
@@dogpd3 you might, but past experience has told Gibson that most people don’t want that. And Gibson aren’t a small volume bespoke guitar maker. They have to make standardised designs that sell. 🤷🏼♂️
@@dogpd3 indeed, but it’s nowhere near as “modern” as your wish list. There’s no volute and no belly cut. Trogly also mentioned it in this video and correctly pointed out that the current Modern is nowhere near as “modern” as this HP he was reviewing: the neck is narrower, the nut is more conventional, the switching is much simpler, the pickup mounting is much more “normal”, etc. Frankly Gibson learned their lesson from the middle of the last decade of not making even their more modern guitar versions too different to the Gibson tradition.
According to Gibson specs, that's an aluminum tune o matic bridge with titanium saddles. And the nut is apparently adjustable, and also made of titanium.
I love everything about this guitar except the neck. My dad has a 2015 LP studio and the neck is just way too wide. Other than that, this is a super cool guitar!
The neck on the 2015 is only for 2015 these aren't as wide. Hp are wider but only one millimeter wider than stock, 2015 was a full 2 millimeters. Not really a big deal since a lot of people are playing 7 and 8 strings now.
I'm really digging this. Cool guitar, I like the wider neck idea, I play a Jackson for that reason. To think there is a Les Paul with the killer compound radius... I'm all about it. Best of both worlds.
It turns out I didn't demo this guitar correctly for the high pass filters + reverse coil selection options.

How much was it and where do you go to browse the Gibson demos ?
The more I look at it the more I like it
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
I have one and I use it as a traditional LP. Also replaced the robo tuners w no drill hipshot set. I love it.
Tapped is a P90 sound, per Gibson. Split is, well, split:
What Do You Hear? Tap vs Split Explained
Tap = Accesses the pickup coils through a filter.
Further DIP Switch Functions
DIP Switch 3 is Neck Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed)
DIP 3 off = out of circuit.
Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes
DIP Switch 4 = Bridge Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed)
DIP 4 off = out of circuit.
Great review, these are very decent guitars. I have a couple and your review seems pretty spot on to me
Good looking guitar! Puts me in mind of the Rickenbacher
You really don't need to change anything, just play it normally. I Love the Guitar 🎸😍
Thanks Trogly don’t know if you remember me but I requested a review, glad you finally got your hands on one!
Other than the fade these are so aesthetically pleasing. The SG hp from this year are my favorites
Wow, I really like that guitar. Sounds and looks awesome.
I don't see the pink at all on my tablet but it still looks awesome. Digging the no ring pups as well!
I’m pretty sure he’s mistaken
That is a heritage cherry
Not the pink
I actually own a 2016 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded HP that came with the G Force tuning system, and it's really a phenomenal guitar. The G Force system is actually very accurate. The one time I had an issue with it, I did a factory reset as per the instructions and haven't had a problem since. It came with Burstbucker Pro's and sounds and plays like butter.
These things sound a lot better than I had imagined them sounding. Ps. I LOVE your Funk/Blues playing. You really shine in that department. All my best! Great demo as always.
I picked the right day to list mine for sale lmao
@@BeesWaxMinder Feel like that’s somewhat of a dick move on a video from a guy selling one, but I’m p sure it’s the cheapest Mojave Fade one on reverb ;)
What did you think if yours? I prefer slim necks 60/59 style. Did the bodycut help make it as comfortable as say a strat?
@@Music-zz5il absolutely not, it still feels much like a normal les paul! I actually didn’t like the heel joint much, I much prefer either the standard Gibson neck joint or the way ESP do it in some of their eclipses. That’s actually it, the guitar doesn’t feel as modern as an ESP Eclipse, and doesn’t do the Les Paul thing as well as a regular les paul.
The out of phase sound is great when layering in the studio though, and the neck pickup is phenomenal.
oh and the top on mine is MONSTROUS, it’s a ludicrously active, deep top
@@johnevered9640 i have an esp ltd 256 and its pretty comfortable! Especially the neck & body sounds like the HP isnt for me! Ideally id find a guitar that has the comfort of my strat & the feel of my les paul.
I know gibson offer the axcess model but coming across lefties is extremely rare
I bought a 2019 HP in blueberry fade. First the SG. Then a Les Paul demo model from sweetwater for $1100 off. I really love the blueberry fade.
The huge and heavy metal case was super cool IMO.
i love the wider necks. nost people who played on a classical guitar will also.i am always looking for 2015-2016 gibsons...i love them.
Yep, I like the coil tap much better than the coil split.
TGS: because of these controversial little things here
Me: *giggles in dynabass*
Very cool finish...we can agree on this one... I'm droolin
please do a separate vid on the case because it's beautiful, but isn't covered much on UA-cam.
Love it. Very versatile for all genres. Great demo. Thank you.🤗👍
I slapped one of these HP harnesses into a '21 tribute honeyburst with burstbucker 61s. It's pretty magical
8:18 a deep groove on the fretboard on the 9-th fret😏
I just won one of those in blood orange! Can't wait for it to arrive!
Nice looking guitar I will say
My 99 Parker Fly doesn't have pickup rings and used the A string and B string pole piece to raise and lower the pickup. You have to get special made pickups from dimarzio if you want to replace them with something else because they are thinner than a normal Humbucker. Also Dimarzio doesn't do all models because some don't fit.
I’m repulsed and fascinated at the same time. I can’t decide if it is ugly or beautiful lol
Seriously??
@@88_TROUBLE_88 gibson fans are complete weirdos. This thing is gorgeous
Hehe , me same. Its like "oh cool !!! So ugly... but cool !!!", both at the same time. I think the idea is cool, but still looks too odd, so its not 100% good looking design.
100% ugly
I like the colours but I dislike the pattern, it's like they took the worst parts of the worst burst finishes, lopped off the bottom part of the basic pattern, and jacked up the contrast even more. Gradual blends look better, sorry. Most burst finishes look like a 90s kid got his hands on Paint Shop Pro, discovered the gradient fill for the first time, and just *had* to show off that he knows how to use it. Subtlety. Jesus.
Damn you Trogly! You just had to point out the Gibson MOD shop LOL, I bought the black Midtown that they had 😀🎸
This is awesome! A really nice clean classy modern take on a classic
The wider neck makes the headstock look awesome.
My Nuno Bettancourt N4 has the Bill Lawrence XL500 in the bridge screwed in through the back also..Its a 2006 custom shop and like that feature alot!
I spent a few days going back and forth about buying that one, then Trogly featured it in a reverb shopping video so I figured it was gone. Sure enough a day later it sold and i was sad but slightly less poor than i would have been. I didn’t expect it was him!!
Regret.
I happens.....regret
Sigh
Thanks brother I recently picked up the trad pro v and was trying to figure out the dip switch’s over all love the guitar but was kinda hard to figure it out but you’r video helped. Thanks
They used the exact same circuit in the 2020 Trad Pro V. The guitar itself was more traditional, and the pickups were different (underwound neck/ overwound bridge). More traditional colors
man without those pickup rings and the pickups being tightened from the back this lp has mad relish trinity vibes
Beautiful!!
The finish reminds me of Rickenbacker’s Fireglo color. Certainly closer to that than the hair metal pink that the catalog photo suggests. I dig it!
I think he’s mistaken
He has a heritage cherry there
Not the pink
"What if I need to change a setting during a gig? Do they expect me to bring a screwdriver and undo the plate during a show?" Whoever Trogly was referencing when he said someone asked this has never played a gig in heir life; do they really think anyone, themselves included, is going to really be able to tell the difference between a tapped vs split pickup in a band mix?
It wouldn't be a trogly playing demo without the ceremonial bow-chicka-wow-wow riffs! 😂😂😂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Bytin all my vid content yo! Lol. I do really love these guitars. HP is underrated and very versatile. I missed my cobalt fade so much I picked up the hot pink fade.
I had the chance to try one out and i was impress with the sound and it was so comfy, but i wasnt sold on price and look, but damn it did sound good!
The High Performance SGs and Les Pauls are actualluy one of the few things I miss from the late Juskciw... However you type his name era. I mean those are super cool, gorgeous pieces of art! ...Shame a normal person can't ever afford them, though.
This video just popped up in my feed today & made me remember I have a blood orange sg hp in the closet.
Now it's in my hands. Akka-Dakka baby!!! 😎
Back to being early, even if I'm sick as a dog... either way, greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
Get well soon!
@@ZaneDalton here's hoping... thanks brother
Hey I’m actually awake late enough to catch this early!
Honestly liking this model and it sorta sucks that for a while Gibson was trying to do something different and kept falling short.
Did they fall short or was it that the market wouldn’t accept anything “modern” from Gibson? Too many guitarists are just too focused on things being like they’ve always been to facilitate innovation, especially from the big name, traditional, brands.
@@davidburke2132 I want to see a Les Paul with a volute, belly cut, heel access joint and wider frets all for the price of a standard.
@@dogpd3 you might, but past experience has told Gibson that most people don’t want that. And Gibson aren’t a small volume bespoke guitar maker. They have to make standardised designs that sell. 🤷🏼♂️
@@davidburke2132 they do have a modern model. I wouldn’t mind getting that. Has a heel access joint
Another great review. I would love to know which neck you preferred, this HP or the Blue 2020 Modern you also reviewed?
I liked that guitar a lot more than I thought I would.
Cool, I have the 2018 in Mojave Fade. It’s a great sounding guitar which feels good to play.
Do a real demo
I'm really digging this. Cool guitar, I like the wider neck idea, I play a Jackson for that reason. To think there is a Les Paul with the killer compound radius... I'm all about it. Best of both worlds.
I'd like the dipswitch stuff mounted in the side of the body like the controls on a Chet Atkins SST are mounted...
