it's like they tried to put what some use a rotary switch for inside on the PCB. That was the spirit of the circuitry so it's not really surprising. Pretty cool that they basically put a pop/click filter on it (quasi noise gate lol) and also cool that you can turn it off.

Honestly you don't have too, Just buy a Studio with the Quick Connect wiring and grab the complete HP PCB Assembly off of ebay/reverb for around $200 USD and you have all the tonal options!
Great to see you checking out one of those. I picked up a new one in Mojave Fade back when Gibson ownership changed and GC had them on sale for like 2300-2400 USD. I love the belly cut, neck profile and that there is no chunky heel. Don't care about the robot tuners and never touched the dip switches (I agree that they are both gimmicky, but they don't really get in the way either, the bass side tuners working in the opposite direction is a bit annoying though)
The wide neck wasn't for me when I tried them, but I have arthritis so I need a very specific neck shape. The high pass filter probably helps when playing with high gain and down tuned.
As I get older I find a thicker neck is much more comfortable to play. I found a Telecaster with a 1.10” neck and it is really easy on my hand. The neck is so big my hand is no longer cramping up. Also, I think the thicker neck gives a guitar a little more resonance.
Cant deny the nice tones coming from this LP. It would actually look pretty awesome under some nice stage lights. This being said, I wouldn't pay more that 1800.00 for it.
I have the 2018 HP2 model in a cobalt fade, picked it up new for 2/3 the price. But what spoke to me was the first time I struck a chord was the clarity and tone from the pickups. Imo if you use this guitar with a TS pedal and a tube amp, it really sings just like. Almost PAF like (not a PAF expert) as far as I can tell. Also that neck, if you have large hands, it plays so smooth. The thickness of the neck is tough to get used to though, but you need it with the wideness of it.
Bytin all my vid content yo! Lol. I do really love these guitars. HP is underrated and very versatile. I missed my cobalt fade so much I picked up the hot pink fade.
I like the sans-pickguard design. I like the clean look of the omitted pickup rings, but I generally don't mind rings. I understand what you're saying about the nut width, too. When I go from my 7 string back to the 6 string, the 6 string almost feels like a ukulele
Dang 1.73 in nut width!? Yikes! I remember I was gonna buy my first SG around 2015 and then I held the 2015 SG Standard and I was not happy at all. Hated that 2015 wide neck that Gibson was doing. Good thing I waited a year and got a 2016 SG Standard.
The highpass filters are treble bleed circuits across the volume knobs, so it brightens up when your turn the volume down. And they are not controlled with any push-pull, you just switch them with the dip switch. With pushing or pulling the tone knob, you select if you use the inner or outer coil of the pickup while splittet.
I think, whilst to look at they aren't much, what matters is the sound. I'm surprised to say this sounds stunning! What a beautiful sounding guitar, plus the variability in the tap/split function is excellent. Thank you for opening my eyes!
You inspired me to buy and sell guitars trogly and help me realize a passion that’s very possible with reverb but I’m scared to do the reviews and post them I wish I had your confidence the same way I have with making music and playing and I truly believe you’re part of the reason they made a demo shop for Gibson as well, lots to be thankful for from your channel!! Guitar looks beautiful :)
I think if they had put metallic finishes like the LP Modern on these rather than the fade finishes I definitely would've bought one. Love the direct-mount pickups, actually looks and feels like a sleek modern guitar. Guess I'm weird though!
Tapped is a P90 sound, per Gibson. Split is, well, split: What Do You Hear? Tap vs Split Explained Tap = Accesses the pickup coils through a filter. Effectively accents a particular frequency range for a “tuned tap”. Result = Fatter, P-90 style voice with balanced output. Also offers lower noise and hum than true single-coil. Split = Isolates one coil in the humbucker pair. Effectively changes a humbucker into a single-coil pickup. Result = Brighter single-coil sound with lower output than humbucking. NOTE: The pickups are Reverse Wind/Reverse Polarity to retain hum-canceling operation when both pickups are combined. Further DIP Switch Functions DIP Switch 3 is Neck Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed) DIP 3 off = out of circuit. DIP 3 on = in circuit. DIP switch 3 further controls your neck pickup. As a volume control is turned down, high frequencies tend to be attenuated. The resulting sound is darker as the volume is lowered due to the interaction of the coil inductance and the volume pot. The High Pass (Treble Bleed) circuit effectively offsets these losses by passing higher frequencies as the volume is lowered. Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes DIP Switch 4 = Bridge Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed) DIP 4 off = out of circuit. DIP 4 on = in circuit. DIP switch 4 further controls your bridge pickup, as above. Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes.
Wait, transient is that ANNOYING pick "chirp"? i've been playing through digital amps lasts years, changing picks to try to avoid that, don't recall to hear it when i played through tube amps... and know i find outit's a digital amps problem??!! this is an epiphany for me :o
Dude I almost bought that one haha. I'm glad you got it though. Always wanted to see you review an hp model! I collect them. Love the gold and chrome too.
I had the SG HP in the Pink Fade. After I got rid of the robot tuners it was nice, it it was really neck heavy and I let it go. The huge and heavy metal case was super cool IMO.
Did they fall short or was it that the market wouldn’t accept anything “modern” from Gibson? Too many guitarists are just too focused on things being like they’ve always been to facilitate innovation, especially from the big name, traditional, brands.
@@dogpd3 you might, but past experience has told Gibson that most people don’t want that. And Gibson aren’t a small volume bespoke guitar maker. They have to make standardised designs that sell. 🤷🏼♂️
@@dogpd3 indeed, but it’s nowhere near as “modern” as your wish list. There’s no volute and no belly cut. Trogly also mentioned it in this video and correctly pointed out that the current Modern is nowhere near as “modern” as this HP he was reviewing: the neck is narrower, the nut is more conventional, the switching is much simpler, the pickup mounting is much more “normal”, etc. Frankly Gibson learned their lesson from the middle of the last decade of not making even their more modern guitar versions too different to the Gibson tradition.
I think it’s beautiful and very cool. I heard they were coming and I’ll bet that’s where I got my Epiphone LP Special. They called from Nashville and asked several questions, even if I wanted silk screen or inlay on the headstock AND if I wanted it to say Gibson or Epiphone. I have an extensive Epiphone collection so I chose Epi, I thought it was going to be more to say Gibson but not so. It came perfectly setup and they even put my choice of GHS Boomers .009-.042’s on it. The wrap around tailpiece provides very close to perfect intonation as well with the hand polished SS frets as well. They said the luthiers have total freedom pertaining to the build and I can really tell and hear it. I see and hear what they do with a Firebird with maybe P-90’s AND these pickups they are naming the colors on the bench! The 335 they were working on “Hurricane Champagne” with a blue undercoating under very fine sparkle champagne/gray. I love them! My T-bird bass is a mix of nickel and gold with beautiful fretwork and a butter setup. Both have Gibson cases and cost between $1,100 and $1,200. I’m very happy with both of them and will buy another!!!
My 99 Parker Fly doesn't have pickup rings and used the A string and B string pole piece to raise and lower the pickup. You have to get special made pickups from dimarzio if you want to replace them with something else because they are thinner than a normal Humbucker. Also Dimarzio doesn't do all models because some don't fit.
I have 2 of these guitars, 1 in trans black the other is Mojave burst and I love them. I originally bought them for the colors but fell in love the more I played them. I only use the coil split/tap with my Boss acoustic pedal and they sound amazing with it. Other than that the Burstbuckers sound amazing. Very happy with them both.
Thanks brother I recently picked up the trad pro v and was trying to figure out the dip switch’s over all love the guitar but was kinda hard to figure it out but you’r video helped. Thanks
I love everything about this guitar except the neck. My dad has a 2015 LP studio and the neck is just way too wide. Other than that, this is a super cool guitar!
The neck on the 2015 is only for 2015 these aren't as wide. Hp are wider but only one millimeter wider than stock, 2015 was a full 2 millimeters. Not really a big deal since a lot of people are playing 7 and 8 strings now.
FUNK YEAH, those aluminum cases are heavy. At least 3-4 times the weight of the hpsg I bought in 2016. Carrying the box up to my second floor apartment had me wondering just how much candy Sweetwater had sent me! The same day it came, I went to GC for an Epi SG case.
I got one of these without the gold mods. I go back and forth on liking the finish and not… LOVE all the other appointments tho. The dip switches are strange at first but you find your sounds and leave them after that. Heel joint is a nice refinement from standard and the belly carve, MOP inlays, titanium nut & saddled, no pick up rings… all good to me.
I don't be understand why the DIP system is hated because, as Trogly showed, their functions can be made totally inactive. I thought the Bridge pickup tapped with distortion sounded absolutely classic. It toned down the gain just enough
Man I would REALLYYY want to buy that guitar for everything on the body, but nearly everything about that neck ruins it for me. If it had just a normal Gibson neck I would buy it in a second.
The "high pass filter" option is a treble bleed. You won't hear it unless you change the volume. I've also noticed that if you pull up to reverse coil, it's a little more open in the tapped position, so a good compromise for both clean and distorted. I personally find the HP4 circuit quieter (less noise) than the one they used in the standard (and now the Modern and Classic?) and appreciate the reverse coil and treble bleed option.
Is it a neck thru? The neck joint looks clean, and I didn't notice the neck tenon. Or it's just very good finishing? Looks like a nice studio guitar, with all these tonal options.
Fret nibs suck! They always open eventuality! That’s why I went with the 2017 HP and love it, sounds killer. The neck is a soloist neck. Robot tuners and the dip switch are great for in the studio
Hi, hope you are well, I prefer the ones with the rings too, makes the humbucker's visual perspective as wider-meaner. You include a "Gear Used to Make the Show", but that beautiful black les paul with the perloid pickguard and the mother of gorgeous halo surrounding the name on the headstock? is not listed, take care
I like the way it sounds, but I'm not really a fan of how it looks. I miss the pickup rings, the scratchplate and while I don't mind the "burst" in the finish, but it just looks like it's in the wrong spot.
They used the exact same circuit in the 2020 Trad Pro V. The guitar itself was more traditional, and the pickups were different (underwound neck/ overwound bridge). More traditional colors
I'm really digging this. Cool guitar, I like the wider neck idea, I play a Jackson for that reason. To think there is a Les Paul with the killer compound radius... I'm all about it. Best of both worlds.

Total turn off those 2015 widths!
Thanks Trogly don’t know if you remember me but I requested a review, glad you finally got your hands on one!
please do a separate vid on the case because it's beautiful, but isn't covered much on UA-cam.
I think, whilst to look at they aren't much, what matters is the sound. I'm surprised to say this sounds stunning! What a beautiful sounding guitar, plus the variability in the tap/split function is excellent. Thank you for opening my eyes!
Brilliant video Trogly. Love your playing skills at the tone demo. This guitar has a sound for everyone it seems. Well worth a couple of grand.
Split is, well, split:
What Do You Hear? Tap vs Split Explained
Tap = Accesses the pickup coils through a filter.
Further DIP Switch Functions
DIP Switch 3 is Neck Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed)
DIP 3 off = out of circuit.
Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes
DIP Switch 4 = Bridge Volume High Pass Filter (Treble Bleed)
DIP 4 off = out of circuit.
DIP 4 on = in circuit.
DIP switch 4 further controls your bridge pickup, as above.
Result = a cleaner, “crisper” sound at lower volumes.
It wouldn't be a trogly playing demo without the ceremonial bow-chicka-wow-wow riffs! 😂😂😂🤘🤘🤘🤘
i love the wider necks. nost people who played on a classical guitar will also.i am always looking for 2015-2016 gibsons...i love them.
This video just popped up in my feed today & made me remember I have a blood orange sg hp in the closet.
Now it's in my hands. Akka-Dakka baby!!! 😎
How much was it and where do you go to browse the Gibson demos ?
The finish reminds me of Rickenbacker’s Fireglo color. Certainly closer to that than the hair metal pink that the catalog photo suggests. I dig it!
I think he’s mistaken
He has a heritage cherry there
Not the pink
I had the SG HP in the Pink Fade. After I got rid of the robot tuners it was nice, it it was really neck heavy and I let it go. The huge and heavy metal case was super cool IMO.
I’m surprised how good this sounds. Lots of clarity and tons of tone choices too. I’d definitely be happy to own one.
Honestly liking this model and it sorta sucks that for a while Gibson was trying to do something different and kept falling short.
Did they fall short or was it that the market wouldn’t accept anything “modern” from Gibson? Too many guitarists are just too focused on things being like they’ve always been to facilitate innovation, especially from the big name, traditional, brands.
@@davidburke2132 I want to see a Les Paul with a volute, belly cut, heel access joint and wider frets all for the price of a standard.
@@dogpd3 you might, but past experience has told Gibson that most people don’t want that. And Gibson aren’t a small volume bespoke guitar maker. They have to make standardised designs that sell. 🤷🏼♂️
@@davidburke2132 they do have a modern model. I wouldn’t mind getting that. Has a heel access joint
Love the sound of those pickups even without splitting or tapping. They sound killer!
That guitar looks awesome...I love the look of the pickups without the rings!
Yep, I like the coil tap much better than the coil split.
I would swap the truss rod cover.
Doesn’t look pink at all (nothing like the advertisement)
Is the case real carbon fiber? 🤘🤘
Thanks brother I recently picked up the trad pro v and was trying to figure out the dip switch’s over all love the guitar but was kinda hard to figure it out but you’r video helped. Thanks
Wow, I really like that guitar. Sounds and looks awesome.
Thanks for the review I own the Cherry Heritage Fade and absolutely love it!
A Great Episode showing that these Guitars have a thing about the tone that the wide neck and zero fret give them - in my view. Well done fella ☺
FUNK YEAH, those aluminum cases are heavy. At least 3-4 times the weight of the hpsg I bought in 2016. Carrying the box up to my second floor apartment had me wondering just how much candy Sweetwater had sent me! The same day it came, I went to GC for an Epi SG case.
so beautiful why all Les Pauls don't look like this without the plastic
I didn't know if I would like this guitar the finish and playability won me over.
Great review, these are very decent guitars. I have a couple and your review seems pretty spot on to me
I got one of these without the gold mods.
I'd like the dipswitch stuff mounted in the side of the body like the controls on a Chet Atkins SST are mounted...
This HB bridge sounds as crap as my Epi SG...😅
Man I would REALLYYY want to buy that guitar for everything on the body, but nearly everything about that neck ruins it for me. If it had just a normal Gibson neck I would buy it in a second.
I had the chance to try one out and i was impress with the sound and it was so comfy, but i wasnt sold on price and look, but damn it did sound good!
I would say that colour reminds me a grapefruit
The high pass filters are treble bleed circuits!
Paint looks like Rickenbacker’s fireglo.
Second is the best
Is it a neck thru? The neck joint looks clean, and I didn't notice the neck tenon. Or it's just very good finishing?
Looks like a nice studio guitar, with all these tonal options.
Fret nibs suck! They always open eventuality! That’s why I went with the 2017 HP and love it, sounds killer. The neck is a soloist neck. Robot tuners and the dip switch are great for in the studio
Back to being early, even if I'm sick as a dog... either way, greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
Get well soon!
@@ZaneDalton here's hoping... thanks brother
Man that guitar just doesn't do it for me.
We need more interesting finishes for SGs. I'd love one with that finish or hell even just a color that's not red, black, walnut or baby blue.
Man,thats nice, I really dig it!🤟
A beautiful guitar! Sounds good although a lot of positions I'm not sure most of us would use. IMO.
Should of had the switches on the top bout kinds like a firebird x
I like the way it sounds, but I'm not really a fan of how it looks. I miss the pickup rings, the scratchplate and while I don't mind the "burst" in the finish, but it just looks like it's in the wrong spot.
They used the exact same circuit in the 2020 Trad Pro V. The guitar itself was more traditional, and the pickups were different (underwound neck/ overwound bridge). More traditional colors
Pink ? It looks red and salmon colored
Hey
You win the wallmart award for the first comment wooohooo you are awesome
@@rondobondo6600 thanks??
Cool, I have the 2018 in Mojave Fade. It’s a great sounding guitar which feels good to play.
Do a real demo
I'm really digging this. Cool guitar, I like the wider neck idea, I play a Jackson for that reason. To think there is a Les Paul with the killer compound radius... I'm all about it. Best of both worlds.
