This method worked great for my cheap soldering iron! Every other tutorial I had no success, and everyone warned against this method. I said screw it because it's cheap and I have nothing more to lose if it's ruined. It was my last resort. I was cautious to not be overly abrasive and my pen sucked up solder like it was thirsty for it. I'm a novice with 2 days soldering experience, but technical background. Thank you for this tutorial.

I'm using a cheap soldering iron with temp knob. All of the soldering tips that comes with it were metal. I always crank it up to max (450C) which still works but soldering wire won't stick to the tip.
Thanks to this video I am now able to fix my soldering tips. The key is SET THE TEMP TO 300-350 CELSIUS when re-tinning. Oh god, after 5 years of being dumb!

FANTASIC, well layed out steps. I look forward to trying this and hope I can finally find success. And the advice about the temperature is WONDERFUL! I've been looking for someone to finally let me know what a good operating temp is. Thank You!

I do that and right after I do one job it’s right back to being usable again . So then I scrape it off again and I’ve been doing this for a couple years and now it’s like almost gone why does this keep happening

If your soldering iron has a high temperature, it will easily have oxides and not tin

I meant un usable and If I lower the temperature it doesn’t get hot enough to melt

@@apourmaker6055 can you tell me about flux , I've never used it before but I've just bought a new soldering iron and couldn't tin it , so the flux helps it to tin is that right? And should you use flux every time you solder or only certain joints ? Thanks for the video 🇬🇧👍

This does not work on iron coated tips, only use this on copper ones. Not fancy coated ones.

Just lower the temperature to 750 deg F. Your soldering tip is just too hot
