Reading all the negative comments on this man's well produced, articulate and somewhat helpful video was discouraging. Looking at his tools and noticing his accent I would bet he does not live in the U.S/UK/Australia or some other country that has access to state of the art equipment or $ to purchase them. My guess is he lives in India with a billion people and only 10 have even a solder iron. The iron he is using was probably passed down from his grandfather and was sanded well before he got it. So last resort if the tip had its coating removed before is to sand. And that will work. Not long...but will work to do a job. Hats off to a well produced video and using what ever means necessary to make a fix.
Still the most incorrect way of soldering iron maintenance
wow, wheres your proof with all those yapping.
Wow you could not be any more wrong on any of this. Do not destroy your iron as shown in this video.
Kiss your soldering iron good bye after this.
Why
Is so dum I done this
Funny how he loved this comment
@@224chingon because of the sand paper, the tip will damaged.
@@Yoursei. well that doesn't really mean much if you were going throw in anyway might as well give it a use
incorrect, sandpapering remove coating of solder iron. Now it will oxidise everytime u heat the iron
Seems to work though doesnt it?
mine oxidises anyway, so stfu
@@krisneave7395 do you even know what oxidising means? No one said it wouldn't work. But it definitely ruin the iron from inside out
I wish i saw this comment, i ruined my tip now i need to buy a new one
Yup, avoid harsh abrasives, especially sandpaper (and using a cutter) at all cost, it'll strip away the chromium plating and iron plating, the most important plating and deform the tip.
4:48 Had the glove in the wrong hand...
Do not do this the sandpapper the sand paper breaks the coating on the iron and it will oxidize when it heats up. Never use an abrasive surface on a iron
So then what should you do?
The acid is also a joke! 😎
Thank you a lot!It seems that it will give the solution to my problem!Well done!
no he give you bigger problem.
45 years using a soldering iron, i have never used sandpaper and never will. Just keep the tip tinned with solder every time you switch off. Maybe gently use brass wool and solder iron sponge.
Always make sure your tip is well maintained to prevent this, when you have a new tip, first thing to do is clean and tin it, after a few joints, wipe, clean and tin it again, when you're finished, clean it and melt some solder on the tip and turn it off, the solder at the end prevents the tip from oxidizing, never leave your iron tip bare when you're finished because your tip will oxidize and sanding and filing your tip will rapidly destroy it when the plating is removed and there's bare copper
Thanks bro
@@anonamemous6865 no problem bud
Yea I've been messing the tips up for a few months now...still learning,Thank you.
@rcandrew8780 no problem buddy
sorry i'm no a native speaker, what does tinning the tip mean?
Useful info, though I think you could have just said "Sand the tip".
If you use brass wool after every soldering session, the soldering iron won't get dirty an you don't have to destroy it with sand paper 😉
yes, I have been using Pure Copper tip for a long time, and there down side is that they oxide very fast, and they need sanding, other than that you melt fine solder.... Then I tried BRASS!!!! game killer!!! easier to tints and tips do not oxide easily if not even, a realy game changing!!
does the steel wool for dishes work too ?
@@bruhmettinmomentogullar4215 No. Steel wool will scratch and destroy the surface of your solder tip. Brass is smoother. If you don't have brass wool use a wet real sponge, cloth or wool from cotton or sheep. But no sythetic wool or sponge, it will melt.
@@Onkel-Stevo i tried the sponge and its not getting any "less blacker" even when i use it at full power (48w) it just struggle to melt anything at all
4:48 that's great, safety first.
@Berzerker God and when he pours the acid in the cap, he holds the cap without glove while holding the bottle with glove hahahhaha
It was dilute sulfuric acid ya speds, but then again it doesn't make sense why he wore gloves on his other hand lmao
@@CommentThink He believes in his right hand but not left hand 🙂😂
@@vishalkumar15sw 😀😀
the soldering machine with yellow power makes the tip more performant, and the lemon salt also makes the soldering tip beautiful
Had a soldering iron which will not stick solder, since I haven't been using it for a long time. The tip is oxidized. I remember not to use sandpaper as it will take off the coating. Since flux is acid, it's use to clean the joints, I tried using citric and oxalic acid. Both worked well, just use damp paper to swipe or dip the iron in these weak acid and clean up. It will retain the solder again.
Thanks! Was looking through the comment section to see if anyone had any other way of doing this before resorting to sand paper
@@curiousseal2678 honestly you both should get better irons. The problems you are describing are only ones that happen with very inexpensive irons. Most decent irons have a solid core tip at least. You shouldn't be afraid to send them a little bit with some fine sand paper.
best way to destroy the tip, congratulation...
XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R O T F L
Please tell me how to do it!
New one and take care of it
@@airplanewhat5316 Honestly, buy a new one and tin it immediatelly while heating it for the first time. You could buy activated flux or chemical tip cleaners but I think buying a new tip is cheaper.
@@Krzeszny95 thankyou! At the end it's what I've dove!
No guys!all of it was wrong!
That was the protective layer above the copper inside the tip
It will kill your tip
Please love them ffs
I think using citric acid cleaner is much better btw
It method works! I tried several minutes ago... thanks
Thank you, this video was very helpful for me. Also, thank you for pronouncing "solder" and "soldering" correctly and not "soder" like the american videos, which I cannot watch due to the mispronunciation.
lol i have never heard anyone in america call it that but cool story bro
nice work, i've don this before but my tip was destroyed
I think, you probably had the best intention by making this vid. But, It is exactly what we learn not to do in basic electronic class. Never use an abrasive medium on the soldering tip. You should have called your vid "how to take off the coating of your soldering iron". Hope since you made this vid you have learned to properly take care of your tip. Anyhow, and even though, I appreciate the rest of it. You did explain clearly and did it step by step, which are things that are extremely important in teaching, specially technical subjects. Keep the good work, I enjoyed it!
It was my problem thankyou
Yeah destroy it..!!! No more plating
Mr , you did good, all the sour answers, just make me realize, people are sad. regards Colin.
Thank you Sir.
Just buy a new tip and maintain it so you don't have this problem. This was a crazy amount of work for a tip that costs less than the sulfuric acid, sandpaper and time put into cleaning the existing tip.
Thank you
Thanks it worked..
Really short vedio and useful, if this method works, i will subscribe to your channel
inm sure u are using a good quality solder
This is dvmb. You're sanding the coating/plating
Then what are you meant to do genius
You can do electroplating on the tip with an indian coin and then by an iron wire to make another protective covering..
And it is approved correct, dont dare to go against it
Dushyant Verma buddy not all of us are from india
@@fernank017 kk iam also frm india..
@@fernank017 um like you can literally search for what an indian coin is made up of and use the same metal to plate your tip so......
Thanks bro
I have black sand paper can I use it in
Can i use ethyle alcohol/sanitizer instead of sulfuric acid
the glove story @4:48 reminds me of the one who eats the peel and throw the banana
😂
Thinner works?
Please, can you write down temperatures you were working with for each each phase? And what was the ratio of sulphuric acid solution?
this guy is basically ruining his tip. all you need to do is turn your iron on around 300 and dip it in flux and then add solder to it and then wipe the solder off. do that about 3 times and you should be good. dont ever use sand paper
Can we use metal it is like sand paper
Any advice for a stuck tip?Its driving me crazy, and I didn't even use it that much or kept it on for long....
Cool, thanks, though sandpaper (and scratching with a cutter blade) should be the very, very last resort, avoid harsh abrasion, it'll strip the iron plating at the tip and the chromium. Even if it's a copper tip, it'd deform the tip as well in no time, if sandpapered every time but thanks for sharing.
My iron has been eaten a bit, even though I always clean it with the sponge after every use? What caused it?
God bless, Rev. 21:4
Nice.
Creative video, thanks for sharing it :)
i use copper tips or i electroplate copper to the tip
ur ticks ok, but main problem is over heating.heat reduce and problem solve....
thank you very much that was much help
you can never take the high temp plating from the tip..In order to avoid that alwyas tin the tip before or during turning off the soldering iron.
Good irons have solid alloy tips. Depends on what you have handy. Some fine sand paper won't destroy most decent irons.
Only do this if you have a fully copper tip
Mere pas 25 w k soldring iran ha wo middle me yaha ring lagi hote ha woha se garm yada hota ha ro agge se kam hota ha kya karu
i use sandpaper to remove excess solder
Its must recoating with nikel.
He did a good job, but at the end he should've tinned the whole tip, you can sand the whole thing down to bare metal, but you have to re tin the tip to keep it from oxidizing in the future and corroding too
I recently bought a new soldering iron and it is not sticking solder to it. What should i do?????
@@tusharsinghal9396 clean it and tin it (do this about 2 to 3 times) never use anything harsh
Due to a defect in the soldering station, the soldering tip heated up until it glowed. I couldn't find a way to re-tinplate the tip. Everything fails.
I think, the heat destroyed it totally. There was nothing left for me to do but grind the tip down to the copper.
It looks like extreme heat is destroying the coating completely ???
dam bro you tryna fix an xbox?
When i did that the soldering iron tip went gold?? I use sandpaper like you said i hope i don't damaged the tip because if i do then i will be tight and i wont be able to fix my dc power supply.
the gold part is the core , if you see that , it means its ruined.
You've damaged your tip, you can tin it and do the job but it will quickly corrode, when u buy a new tip, dont sand or file it, keep it tinned and cleaned, when you're finished, melt some solder on the tip and leave it there and turn your station off or unplug (if it's those that just plugs into the wall)
hmmmm hmmm where have i already seen this thumbnail...
that power bar is crazy
60 vodka soldering iron hai uski nedil Tut gai hai aur uska net bhi toot Gaya uski needle nikal Rahi Koi jugaad karke batao
Is there something else you can use besides sulfuric acid to clean that
maybe hobrite
You only need to do the working tip not the whole thing.
If your tip looks like the one in the thumbnail, It's done for toss it
can i use hard thinner instead of sulfuric acid???
I tried... It doesn't work
it worked for one time . it is getting slowly black on tip , what next step to follow
Looks like the other commenters are saying
A) acid treat, heat up and “tin” the whole tip by covering with solder. Always leave the tip coated with solder
B) ideal - buy a new tip and tin it after every use
@@hubristicmystic I will try. Thanks for your comment
This is definitely what you don't want to do...
Nice bro problem solved
My soldering Iron even isn't melting the solder
can i use vinegar? sorry for the question
Vinegar is not a good idea.
You should only high solvent alcohol like 91-95% and brass wool. Oxidation makes soldering frustrating and most of what he did was not up to standards, but he was trying to help.
Just buy a new tip, and get some silver/lead solder to tin it with and keep it tinned.
we dont find sulfuric acid then what to do
Thanks man much help
Can I use battery distilled water
U can try
Kind of reminds me of that Phil Hartmann sketch, the anal retentive electrician. I leave the iron on, hit it briefly with the dremel drum sander, and tin it. That's it! Unless you're cauterizing wounds, I see no need for acid and ONLY CLEAN tissue paper. Get the metal clean and tin it, and go! That thick layer of fluffy carbon on the rest of the tip can actually act as insulation on a cold windy day, so long as you have good contact inside the iron.
long time ago 60 yrs ago, was never a problems. we was usuing pure copper tip;
Thank you for a short, yet comprehensive tutorial. As a beginner, I found this most valuable.
Sal Ammoniac also works well - non acid.
can i change sulfuric acid with vinegar?
You can try that..
always use copper and brass bits and for cleaning, u can use a triangular file or flat file. and while doing soldering u must have to use a face mask as it contains. lead
The fumes you see is not lead but the flux, lead and tin are metal and metal dont melt and vaporize at such low temps, if the fumes is a problem to anyone, use a fume extractor and wash your hands to remove lead particles from your hands, soldering is relatively safe unless you decide to hold things to eat without washing your hands or unless you decide to eat the solder....but i don't think solder is tasty enough for us to chew it up lol
they make lead free
FYI: what you have there is not tissue paper. It's paper towel.
how much the concentration the H2SO4
I doubt he can even spell it 😅
good
What can you do if you sand down the tip already?
Buy a new one you messed it up with the sand paper
Going to report this video for misleading information for 2 years. Good thing i sanded a cheap solder iron. Imagine a person new to this doing his/her business or something.
People saying that will ruin the iron... that's to be able to use the already ruined iron...
He did ruin the tip. At the end, the solder was balling up.
Easy way to clean keep your solder beat in salt & Vinegar for few time then clean with brush
I dont think so Abdo
Great idea .let me test and get result

What does sulfuric acid do for the soldering iron tip?
Cleans invisible dust covering completely
Thank you

nice
So when u solder youre basically doing an electrolysis with the solder tip as cathode hence the unavoidable accumulation of residue due to oxidation... 🤔... Eh, sulfuric acid? ... He's reversing the electrolytic process? 🤔... He did not. 😳
Quá cồng kềnh
And it still won't tin or hold solder. FAIL!
But why though? maybe if it was the last tip on earth i would do this. If you need to solder electronics and have them work afterwards just get some new tips or it will turn into a mess and make you destroy stuff trying to stick the solder and heating for too long or small blobs will jump off the iron and land who knows where and pokssjbly create a short. Dont just take your dads old iron in the garage used for pipe and start fiddling with your iphone.Dont use his plumbing solder either its not what you need.
whth nhot? i heard someone saing that before
It's so dumb to do that there is clearly mention on the packaging of soldering iron to not to rinse the bit as it will remove the coating
