Good job making box joint supers and deeps. These will last 20 years and more. Pre-drill all nail holes, use water proof glue if you have it. It will seal the wood from moisture. A simple jig like this is all that is needed and keeping focused as to what you are doing so you don't cut the wrong part. Thanks
My daddy taught me fine woodworking as it was his hobby. I own a 200$ tablesaw and a router, that don't make me a woodworker. I find it better to buy materials from the bee supply over getting chiselled on the price of lumber and then investing into machinery.. If I need 2-3 bottom boards I build them before paying freight on a small order, normally I get hive bodies in a case of 5. My yard is around 20, no desire to expand at this time.
Your video is excellent because: You didn’t waste our time promoting yourself You kept on topic Your explanation fit the video You were humble You did explain things we already knew You ideas were great Way to go!!!!
I just found your channel and subscribed. I'm not a beginner and I do build all my own equipment. That being said, your channel should be required viewing for all beginners. I don't understand why you don't have 10,000 subs.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I started out making my first boxes. I actually enjoy making all my woodenware. Unfortunately it's cheaper to buy unassembled boxes than I would pay for the materials. Hopefully the prices will return to pre-pandemic level and we can go back to being creative again.
True... I just paid a whopping $120 for the pine to make 5 deeps! Lowes price as of 5-16-22. I picked up the 11.25 x 3/4" wood so I could trim it to 9-5/8" height pieces, then used the remainder for building inner covers. Added some primer and paint along with 5000qty 1.25" staples, and the whole order was just barely short of $190, and that won't be anything other than 5 deeps and 5 inner lid frames. When you compare the time and cost spent, it makes more sense to buy assembled boxes. I guess the feeling to have more control this time made me want to build them. It's a habit I have, but yes, it's a pre-pandemic habit, as it used to save money. Nowadays, it is almost pointless to build it yourself unless you're making them to sell. All my time needs to be spent hustling these days to fight this inflation. It's absolutely terrible we have to even think like this, but it is out of necessity. I've been looking at buying stuff from AliExpress to save on having to build. I can't wait until income levels triple so we can put the inflation behind us. Joke of course... I really do think our fiat is screwed.
I think Aliexpress is china based so wood need to be treated before exporting to usa. Many people dont like to keep bees in a chemical treated wooden box
Very good videos, now I have to think about buying a dado blade or a router jig for a simple hand router.... seems the dado might be a better investment considering frames, too.
One suggestion- aim the camera so that we can see your work from the rear of the saw towards you. Or something from above. It is harder to understand when at a side angle. Good chit though! Ty very much for your time!
Very nice, I always respect and appreciate a fellow woodworker with toys, lol; I build a lot of bee boxes, but I don't complicate myself with too many measurements, I keep everything at 3/4" finger joints, works everytime; Keep up the good work. Dan
If the end boards that have the frame ledge had the pocket instead of the pin at the top you wouldn't need to make any adjustments. It would just be a full depth normal stepover cut. Correct?
You would not need to make a special cut for the rabbit if you reverse the teeth such that the side getting the rabbit starts with a space/notch instead of a tooth, and the long side starts with a tooth instead of a space/notch. This way the tooth from the long side covers the rabbit up with not need to change the saw at all.
@@pathofthebee2873 I have boxes done this way that are pretty old, and have been wood working since the late 1980s. There is no weight on this spot, and the non-rabbited side takes all the pressure from moving frames.
Why don't you just cut that thinner top piece off, instead of making the 5/8" cut? That way you're not having to rerun all those sides just to do one off sized cut.
I’ve seen other videos where the top finger is cut off completely on the short sides. This gives a full finger on the long end which I think would be even stronger and every notch is the same. Have you tried this?

Good to see a real wood worker building one of these !!! Thank You
he a bee keeper, not a wood worker...he not bad working with wood, but I doubt even he'd call himself a "real wood worker"

Thank you. I try to make what I would watch. Short ,sweet and to the point.
very simple, not a lot of complex jigs and tools. Thank You!
You are awsome! I am so very tired of using my router to make my boxes. Thank you for showing me how to make a proper bee box!!!
Glad I could help!

Great video, thanks the best one I’ve watched so far. I think I will be able to make them now. Thanks again.
Awesome! Thank you!

Thank you so very much, this had always confused me but your demonstration was great!

Thanks for sharing
That was quick and kind,
Great job bud thanks for the info.
I just saw this video about finger joints. When will you do one on how to cut the handles into the box? Thanks

I build them somewhat the same. But no special top cut. 3/4 all cuts. And do the top corners opposite of how you set it up. So no adjusting my dado.
Thanks for watching.

Correct, but the lip will be unsupported and fail quickly. You can do it that way but my experience tells me it is a poor idea.
I will try it your way now.
Let me know how it turns out...
Excellent instruction. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
Thanks!
kind of a jenky way of doing it without the 2nd slot, but does seem like it'd get the job done
Thank you Great video!
Wow, thanks for the info, great video.
Glad it was helpful!

The box will fail there after a few years. That is how I started out. It doesn't work for the long run to cut that corner....

interesting, but got lost. not a wood worker, so too confusing
So much simpler than the other guy. I waisted the whole day, and ruined a lot of lumber.
Try out your spacing on scraps to make sure the joints fit up tight. Good luck.

Thanks Sir

If that piece is not there the rest of it will break off as you use the box. I know this from experience....
