Defender Heater modification part 3 (well, it should be 2 but you know how it is!)

  • Testing the heater blower in the heater box - got me videos a bit mixed up but I think you can get the drift.
    The blowers are fine, IF you take out all the directional ducting for the cold air side (which nobody uses anyway)
    You can do this modification to any pre 2007 Land Rover - and it works!
    If you have a pre 2005 Land Rover problem and do not know how to fix it, drop me a line! Maybe I can help!

    Mike, thank you 👍 I'm watching all this series in one go. The thing is that, Webasto water (coolant) heater can be used in conjunction to existing heater matrix. Especially while camping. And in most recent Webasto water heaters, there is an option to heat cabin ONLY (not the engine block). Thanks to your mods. Cheers 👍

    Hi mike I'm in the process of cleaning my heater box up full strip and good clean up but there are some spacer and washer in side and you can not find no diagrams on the internet and it appears that I am not the only one it should be good to see a one being full strip and rebuild thanks from Newcastle upon tyne

      When I strip them I pull the guts out and leave the matrix - but I recirculate from the footwell - very hot!

    I put two early type heater matrixes in the heater box side by side then made the fan motor go the other way it now works great as good as any heater wow

      That's a good idea!

    Hey Mike!
    First of all thank you for all the interesting and helpful videos. Solved me already some issues!
    The heater in my '86 ExMod 90 is not working at all and I thought that's because of a broken blower resistor. So what do you think?
    Many greets from Germany,
    Dirk

      Check the purple/green wire on the 3 way connector near the heater has power with the ignition on
      If there is power, the other 2 wires ground via the right hand lever on the instrument cowl - check these
      Normally if the resistor has gone then the blower will still work on high speed
      It is quite common for the blower motors to seize solid

    So, wait...... if my LHD blower is working fine, but just doesn't blow very hard, It might actually just be that it is turning in the wrong direction for the particular squirrel cage that I have on it? So potentially, when the weather clears, I could go out and swap the wires and get better air flow????

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 роки тому

      if you have a proper LHD fan unit and blower - then it should be the right way round, you can reverse the direction on the blower by swapping the wires on the motor itself not on the 3 wire connector
      But I would be tempted to check the operation of the flaps of the heater unit - they are notorious for slipping!

    Been trying my best to find a heater matrix that’s large enough to fill the gap where the cold air flow was removed (as you did) - any advice or direction to look?
    AlliSport has a high output matrix but it’s an arm and leg.

      I found the STD heater if flushed out was quite good - providing there is enough hot water going through it - common problem with Diesels

    That's interesting, I thought it was in my head that my LHD Defender heater wasn't as effective as my old RHD one...

    It really does beg the question, why did no one at LR flag this up? Or maybe they did and they were just ignored by the suits.
    Any plumber, HVAC engineer of anyone who works with fluids or airflow knows about the physics of flow. (and not restricting it.)

      Heating a room with warm air was described to me thus:
      Imagine you have a jam jar full of glass marbles - to get another in - you have to take one out.
      So on a Defender that is (theoretically) an air tight box, heating will be improved if there are vents at the back of the vehicles driving compartment

    • @harveysmith100
      @harveysmith100 5 років тому

      @@BritannicaRestorations Nice description, makes sense to me.
      My point about restriction was, restricting the airflow out of the heater box. Make the opening as big as you can as you said.
