Hi Andrew. Good video. I was wondering something about the Atmos speakers. I have some Klipsch tower speakers and like to toe in (about 30°). I also have Atmos speakers on top of the towers in upfiring config so they end up also with toe in. Would this affect the sound path bouncing from the ceiling?

Andrew, thank you very much for this. My Denon AVR was updated over a year ago to support Dolby Atmos. I always thought I required purpose-built new Dolby Atmos speakers to take advantage of it. After watching this how-to I’ve now added two small “vintage” Realistic two-ways ontop of my main fronts as front Dolby’s. Perfect!
I have Dolby Atmos set up in my living room using a Sony str-dh790 AV receiver with 2 Sony Atmos up firing speakers. The rest of my speakers are Polk. It helps the experience a little bit but not sure if it's worth the money. Granted...my configuration is not a high end $$$ system so that may be the problem. But I hated to spend a lot not knowing if it would truly work well. So....based on my experience I'm neutral on atmos. Overall I'm pleased with my sound as the Polk speakers do a good job.
How about a video covering an all in/on wall/ceiling surround system for open concept type homes. I’m partial to monitor audio but am not sure what to select for my room. The left side is open to the kitchen. Also my wife is not on board with having speakers take up room in our small house. Thanks , I really like your approach specifically what ever sounds best to you is what you should get.
Thanks a lot Andrew! As usual, you make it really easy for us - end users, to enjoy great sound! In case you already haven't done one, would love to see an educational video on Room EQ and or Acoustics (a few synergies there I think)

A very helpful video, thank you. My Atmos system is now much better balanced except for manually matching the sub-woofer level to the other speakers. Was too much, and had to dial it down.
Sup Andrew, question for you. I have the Hta-9, what do you recommend when streaming movies in standard 5.1? LPCM or bitstream/Dolby? I know for Dolby atmos it’s bitstream, but what about 5.1?
Your reviews are always great, but you’re instructional videos are awesome! Always beneficial to receive tips from the black belts! Thanks for the guidelines
I have 4 dolby upward firing speakers mounted on the front wall and back wall. No diffrence if you make them height channels or dolby speakers. Dolby does sound a little cleaner. Use a calibration mic for best results
First off love the channel! I have not been able to find any advice on speaker, crossover and subwoofer settings for my in wall speaker setup. I would appreciate a tutorial video on that if possible.
great video Andrew, my new atmos speakers arrive in a couple of days and your video was a great help to understand how to set things up. I will be watching it a couple of times more to nail it all into my head - thank you
What crossover do you recommend for the Atmos speakers? I currently have Eltax Monitor ATM and I have them set at 180 hz. From the floor to the ceiling I have 2.7m and from the speaker to the ceiling 1.6m. I have a Sony DH790 and in the amp menu I have set the ceiling height to 2.7m. Do I have too set the distance from the speaker and not from the floor? Thank You in advance.
A well thought out REW for measuring subwoofers. You know like REW for dummies. There is not a good one out there…something is all ways given that you know what your doing. I’m not a great software person but love great BASS 🔊 in my system. Thanks for all the great videos keep up the great work.
Not including the accessories.. The current total for this audio setup is around $4200. Would you recommend this set up over Sony A9 with bigger sub? Thank you
Thanks, this is a great guide and something I was looking for. Along the same lines as your under-$1000 hifi video, how about an inexpensive AV setup? Like this video, it would assume I already have a good flat screen TV and video source.
You should make a video for us noobs about what specs you want from your receiver to optimize your speakers and their specs. I have been wanting to learn about that in order to ensure I have a long lasting system that won’t be damaged or improperly powered.
Hi Andrew, love ya work my question is how to know where and what to used for sound treating your room, where to begin and what am I listening for ? Cheers from Queensland 🇦🇺

Hi Andrew. I have the HT-A9 which I like. I am decorating and have the option to run wires. For sound and experience alone what is your opinion on which system is best. If this 5.1 system was so good in comparison I would happily sell the HT-A9. To add I do have the Bravia TV centre speaker setup. Love your channel. Thanks.... Stephen
Hi Andrew. I purchased a Yamaha A6A about 8 months ago, but I can't figure out this unit. there are endless limitations of what you can or can't do with speaker setup. The user manual is almost useless. Yamaha did not bother uploading a video (considering how complex this unit is to guide you through the setup) for those who bought either the A8A or A6A there is no help. I'm kind of frustrated with this unit. I wonder if you could do a video on that. Plus I have a Crwon XLS 1002 for the front speakers, Thanks
Worth mentioning that you can use something like the SVS Prime Elevation speaker instead of in-ceiling or bounce speakers. I live in an apartment and didn't want to wall mount so I just put speaker stands on top of my TV stand. Not the prettiest solution but the sound is incredible (arguably better than in-ceiling as those often sacrifice sound for form factor).
I was always wondering what is the best you can do. There is in-ceiling, height, and bounce. I didn't know which is best. I think best would be X.X.6 setup, where 2 front height, 2 - in ceiling middle, and 2 back height.
Imma be honest. This video will come in handy since I recently move and I can't seem to find my mic to calibrate my speakers. Great video brother. Thanks guys.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thank you thank you, after calibrating my system the way you show in your video first movie I played San Andreas and imma tell you it put a big smile in my face. Sounded twice better then what it was. All 5.2.2 speakers sound like they are alive. Thank you guys 🙏
Enjoyed the video! Still fairly new to world of surround, but 5.1.2 or 7.1 are my current setup options until I upgrade my receiver (looking at the continuously out of stock Onkyo). Any opinion on the differences between those two options and if one is significantly better?
Your videos are awesome, I've learned a lot binge watching them over the past week. My lady doesn't like you much though, I watched your video on the Jamo and thought yes. So a week ago I somehow got her on board with me getting a Jamo 5.1.2 setup ($1450) She wasn't thrilled with it though "too much $$$ it's just sound" Welp, I watched this video + some of your other reviews and knew I wouldn't be happy long term if I went all Jamo. So, watching more of your stuff + a few other YT audio fellas. I thought to myself "ohhhh, Polk Reserve looks beautiful in Walnut and gets good reviews." The problem there is, there's uhhhh... a slight bump in price, and by slight, I mean 3x. The "same" setup from Jamo S and Polk Reserve, Polk's almost 3x the price to the penny lol. Polk is great but she tells me "the TV has built in speakers" so I can't explain this to her. A week ago she thought Jamo was expensive lol. Apparently, she doesn't appreciate good audio, so she has refused my request to go buy the Reserve stuff. But she did give me a monthly budget, so I can buy a piece or 2 a month and have a home theater going by November. WOO HOO to a half-victory! Which is better than no victory at all. Also, Polk seems to have big Black Friday sales in October & November, so MAYBE since I gotta wait to save up my allowance anyways, I'll be able to get this whole setup for only 2.5x as much as the Jamo for BF. That would make her happy lol, yeah right... Your videos helped me realize I should go Reserve, and when she finally hears 7.2.2 in all its glory she'll understand and she'll love it. At least that's how it works in my wild imagination. Thank you sir.
Holy smokes…THANK YOU! I understood some of this, but not that much. Having a Marantz SR7011, this was perfect. The only way it could be much easier would be if you came to our house and did the setup for me! Now for a question. Like Kristi, my wife and I both frequently have trouble understanding movie dialog. Do you have any specific recommendations for brand/model of surround speakers that would help? Room is large (25’x45’, actual seating area about 25’ square) with vaulted 22’ ceiling and concrete floors (yes, we have an area rug to help). Thank you for any recommendations you can offer! As for your question, I wonder if a video addressing acoustic room treatments might be really helpful?
Do you recommend sound diffusion panels? They seem expensive. Is the price worth the improvement in audio? The rooms I will set up as my home is somewhat wide and tall, without furnitures there is an audible echo. Should I look into diffusion panels or is it just bs?
All this sounds crazy. One guy on the other you tube channel says up-firing (Klipsch 40SA) sitting on the main L+R speakers are not good. He says don't waste your money. Says - Use either bookshelf on the wall directed at the seating position or in-ceiling. Now, Andrew is saying different. I am confused. Here is the thing: I live in a rental apartment. Cutting the ceiling for the speakers, running wires? My landlord will charge me a hefty fine. Upfiring on top the speaker is the way to go. I already have a 5.1 setup off of the Denon Receiver. I have two "OLD" bookshelf speakers. I can hang them things on the wall behind my TV. Will that be sufficient? Will I get the effect of atmos? All that will cost me are two iron brackets. Sure, I can put two holes to install hefty brackets. Landlord wouldn't know. Just the wires will hang from those speakers that may look ugly. So I am going to go by what Andrew says. Anyone care to comment for renters like me?
upward firing speakers will have very little to none effect. In ceiling isn't possible, I understand, but place them as high as possible, right above your left and right speaker, onto the wall, pointing directly at you. This will give you the best Atmos effect and is often called better in stead of in ceiling speakers. It's for sure easier to install! Tell your receiver you have height speakers installed and it will do everything for you to calibrate them for Atmos
You dont need in ceiling speakers. Your ears can't be tricked. I bought a q990b because I didn't want to make too many holes in my house rental. For channel separation, it's worse than my old 7.1 onkyo. Just out a speaker bracket on the ceiling. I'd rather have ugly wires and awesome atmos than upfiring speakers.
I would love a review of an atmos system vs a Dolby true hd system with better amplification and speakers. Atmos is an absolute must for actual movie theaters but I’m not sold that it’s better in home theater situations except helicopter movies where all the sound comes for some tinny speakers overhead like Mission Helicopter 10 and Heli Man, The Atmos Avenger! But I could be wrong:)
I agree with you mate and if you click on the red dragon twice you can see I've got an audiophile grade Atmos setup. Nearly all the movies I've had the best audio experience with has been 5.1 movies, just goes to show... at the end of the day it's all in the mastering!
Fantastic video, thank you! It was well organized, easy to follow, and I appreciate the recommendations. My only question is what do you do with the wires (mostly concerning rear surrounds) to hide/keep out of the way?
Hey Andrew, love the content you already produce, this was a very informative educational video. Another one I think might be a hit would be to do a video explaining what all the technical stuff means on a speaker. I know in reality it doesn't matter if you like the sound, you like the sound but I think people still might find value in the specifics. Thanks,
thank you for the video. i currently have a 5.1 setup with all the speakers in my ceiling (i have an awkward shaped living room). would adding 2 more make a difference? thanks
1st off I really enjoy your video's! Possibility using multiple speakers and how that affects impedance and or distortion. Pro's and con's. I know the answer but would make a good training video.
Hi Mr.Andrew. You are EVER In proving genius qualities and presenting a v receivers and audio products genuine reviews in a very clear soft dynamic voice 😀 👌
I stumbled across your year old video where you talked about leaving an audiophile magazine and learned about the benefits of soundbars. I went through a similar experience and posted this as my response as I was again caught up in Black Friday. While I didn't work for an audiophile magazine I had followed their advice to build a 7.1 entertainment room. I had become burned out with the complexity and dealing with a separate remote. No learning remote could do everything I needed. I tried a soundbar out 10 years ago with a subwoofer and it was close enough if not exceeding my AVR system that I gave away my expensive system and kept the soundbar. I've started to look at newer Atmos systems but there isn't much Atmos content yet and what there is still sounds fine on my older Soundbar. I don't watch movies as much as I used to so it's less of a priority. My goal was to upgrade my bedroom 10 year old Panasonic 55" plasma TV and Vizio soundbar to a LG C1 77" with a LG Atmos soundbar though Sony was tempting me with the HT-9. With everything in my shopping cart I backed away and reconsidered whether it was worth the cost. After all my plasma TV has deep blacks, my soundbar has very clear voice audio and excellent surround so why replace it. Don't get caught up in the latest hype and sales frenzy. Consider what you are trying to accomplish and whether it is worth the expense. I could easily afford a new system, but why! I'm going to spend the holiday watching movies and playing games rather than figuring out how I am going to fit this new equipment and get rid of the old.
Costco has a 5.1.4 Klipsh reference theater pack for $800. Had to pick up a Denon x3700H to use it all though so all in all it was about $2600 just for an entry set up, granted I’m not complaining cause it’s awesome Edit: watching Saving Private Ryan is a perfect example of what a surround sound setup can do
Hmm, I'm curious in what you've said about the height speakers sitting on your fronts. I had this set up for a couple of months and really couldn't get the sound I wanted, as the sound was diffused (my walls are roughly 8ft). I decided to mount the heights to the wall and it was a night and day experience, where you can hear the sound from what the sound engineer set those scenes for. So I'm wondering why you didn't mention wall mounting the speakers you have or didn't mention that you could, seeing that your room seems almost identical to mine?

Great video! I just got a pair of Sony Atmos ready speakers. Will definitely use this video as my guide. You just earned a subscriber.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you. Going through things with your video is a lit easier than reading the manual through my smartphone. Since no one provides a print manual anymore.
How about a video showing how to set up a turn table?
Great video as usual, keep the great work. Hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving. 😎
A very helpful video, thank you.
My Atmos system is now much better balanced except for manually matching the sub-woofer level to the other speakers. Was too much, and had to dial it down.
The reason you may have had to turn it down was due to your room “enhancing” its effectiveness. You can always turn it down or up to taste.
Sup Andrew, question for you. I have the Hta-9, what do you recommend when streaming movies in standard 5.1? LPCM or bitstream/Dolby? I know for Dolby atmos it’s bitstream, but what about 5.1?
Music in dolby atmos
Steven Wilson - The Future Bites
Porcupine Tree - CLOSURE / CONTINUATION
Air - 10000hz
Moby - Reprise
I can listen to you talk all day
Greetings from Finland, i like your style to say things really clear so ewerybody can understand them, and wery good channel.
Would you recommend something like this over the Sony HT-A9 (with sub)?
Your reviews are always great, but you’re instructional videos are awesome! Always beneficial to receive tips from the black belts! Thanks for the guidelines
Mike I really appreciate that! I try to keep things simple so that everyone can enjoy this hobby because it isn't meant for just a select few.
Very clear instruction Andrew,i am waiting on a Sony 65 x95j.Already have a Denon AVR2700.
I have 4 dolby upward firing speakers mounted on the front wall and back wall. No diffrence if you make them height channels or dolby speakers. Dolby does sound a little cleaner. Use a calibration mic for best results
Incorrect. Upfiring speakers cannot compare to in-ceiling speakers.
@@nogoodkeister9251 not using them as upfiring.
@@Kev-O33 my bad!
Love these setup videos!
Great video and guide to setup Dolby. Takes less stress off my mind as to how simpler it is to install than I thought.
What are your opinion about front height (5.1.2)? Have you tried this?
First off love the channel! I have not been able to find any advice on speaker, crossover and subwoofer settings for my in wall speaker setup. I would appreciate a tutorial video on that if possible.
Noted!
great video Andrew, my new atmos speakers arrive in a couple of days and your video was a great help to understand how to set things up.
Very helpful. Loud and clear
Look at getting amps too. Check out techno dad & others
What nice lighting, and not to mention, fantastic, modulated voice you have!
Hi Andrew, love ya work my question is how to know where and what to used for sound treating your room, where to begin and what am I listening for ? Cheers from Queensland 🇦🇺
Thanks for this video
I always wanted to setup a Dolby Atmos but I didn't know how to set it up perfectly
Yup I tried and it was pretty bad setup
Hey I have a question do I need a amplifier
I'm using elac unifi ub5 and Klipsch r600m
great great video for noobs... I know there are a lot of standards floating around, but I think a video on the difference between eARC and ARC, HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.1 difference, lossy Atmos. One long video on all of these and we can just come here and have a reference point.
Thanks a lot once again Andrew... Cheers
Great knowledge recently I purchase stage 190 JBL setup with atmos
Great video, thank you. I have a question about wiring your Sub, you connected a single RCA cable, my Sub is connected by a dual red/white RCA cable. Any difference?
Wondering the same. I think I’m going to use a single LFE cable.
Nope
Awesome content in your channel, an awesome video i would love to watch would be cabling specs, about gauge and distance, separating cables from power or the floor... I don't know hahah i'm trying to learn
Thanks Andrew! I love your content. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Andrew, I want to go the manual set up on my system and this was highly informative
Noted. Appreciate you sharing the tip!
I was always wondering what is the best you can do. There is in-ceiling, height, and bounce. I didn't know which is best.
I think best would be X.X.6 setup, where 2 front height, 2 - in ceiling middle, and 2 back height.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks, love your channel!
Happy birthday Kristi!
Thank you so much!
So many thanks, this was just what I needed! Keep them coming.
Imma be honest. This video will come in handy since I recently move and I can't seem to find my mic to calibrate my speakers. Great video brother. Thanks guys.
So glad to hear that it will help you out!
This was awesome, thank you so much. I have a 4m x 5m room and setting it up as a Home Theatre (small, but it’s what I’ve got).
For those of you who use real units:
8-12 feet = 2.44 - 3.66 meters
Enjoyed the video! Still fairly new to world of surround, but 5.1.2 or 7.1 are my current setup options until I upgrade my receiver (looking at the continuously out of stock Onkyo). Any opinion on the differences between those two options and if one is significantly better?
How well does the monitor audio subwoofer sound?
Your videos are awesome, I've learned a lot binge watching them over the past week. My lady doesn't like you much though, I watched your video on the Jamo and thought yes. So a week ago I somehow got her on board with me getting a Jamo 5.1.2 setup ($1450) She wasn't thrilled with it though "too much $$$ it's just sound"
Welp, I watched this video + some of your other reviews and knew I wouldn't be happy long term if I went all Jamo.
I like her, your Mrs. is smart!
Great video some people don’t know how to connect a tv to a receiver to hear tv thru it. Should do a video of doing the actual hook up
Do you recommend sound diffusion panels? They seem expensive. Is the price worth the improvement in audio? The rooms I will set up as my home is somewhat wide and tall, without furnitures there is an audible echo. Should I look into diffusion panels or is it just bs?
Try to get both absorption and diffusion panels installed by a professional
Hey Andrew I really enjoy all your videos reviewing specially home theater setups. I wish I could find a way of cables clean setup for rear surround.
Since you have the X95J there, I would like to see an explanation of Sony's HDMI settings such as Enhanced vs Dolby Vision vs Bravia Sync.
Hey Andrew, love the content you already produce, this was a very informative educational video.
Another one I think might be a hit would be to do a video explaining what all the technical stuff means on a speaker. I know in reality it doesn't matter if you like the sound, you like the sound but I think people still might find value in the specifics.
Thanks,
In terms of spec/frequency/other is there any difference between upward/downward atmos speakers and normal ones?
thank you for the video. i currently have a 5.1 setup with all the speakers in my ceiling (i have an awkward shaped living room). would adding 2 more make a difference?
Had to pick up a Denon x3700H to use it all though so all in all it was about $2600 just for an entry set up, granted I’m not complaining cause it’s awesome
Edit: watching Saving Private Ryan is a perfect example of what a surround sound setup can do
I SO needed this video, glad I found your channel! Thanks!
You are seriously the man for this tutorial.
Quick question, a friend of mine has
