I think the funniest part about a new Godzilla movie and a new Ghostbusters movie releasing on the same week is that they both released on each other’s respective anniversary year. Ghostbusters on its 40th and Godzilla on its 70th.
I find it funny that there is also an ice themed antagonist in both of them
@@TrojanGamer10Also, both have Empire in titles.
I'm not sure it's funny, but it is interesting.
I absolutely love that!
It’s almost like that might have been intentional.
Fun fact, the godzilla sleeping on roman colosseum, the director said that his cat was his inspiration for that.
I KNEW IT!
That's awesome.
Didn't director Adam Wingard once tweeted he wanted to do an AVGN tribute with Dan Stevens as The Nerd?
The best . Nerd
I think Minus One's Godzilla is also based on the director's cat.
when kong threw sand at godzilla’s face dale gribble style i died 😂
Right away I said to my wife "Pocket sand!"
I yelled out in the theater, "POCKET SAND!"
Yes! I saw that scene and immediately thought "He just pocket sanded him!"
That is an amazing film moment.
😂😂😂😂
Everything that ever existed is getting a sequel. Except for Gremlins. Never Gremlins.
Maybe that's for the best
Or the thing 1982. Can u believe killer klowns has a game
Or Back to the Future.
Or Goonies
Or The Iron Giant!
I love when Kong used mini kong as a bat.
REALL.. THAT WAS SO FUNNY 😭🙏
I burst out laughing, that was great

13:30 The novelization puts a sad spin on it, Godzilla is sleeping there because it reminds him of his old home from King of the Monsters.
I'm more fascinated that they made a novelization of this movie more than that fact itself
@@SpongeBobaFettI think there's a novelization of every monstervers movie.
@SpongeBobaFett they all have one and the novels have way more information as well. I have all the books besides the newest one
@@kennyboggs3676guess Legendary want people to read books as well.
@@kennyboggs3676it never stopped
You can immediately tell when James is speaking his off the cuff/from his own words, this is refreshing. I hope he continues and understands we just like him and his take on things, everything else is 2nd.
I very much enjoyed his own words and his enthusiasm. I really hope he knows how much we really do like hearing from him.
Godzilla Minus One is a beautiful, artistic masterpiece. Godzilla X Kong has a big monkey beating two other big monks up using a fourth, smaller monkey as a club. As far as I'm concerned, they are both excellent films.
The whole scene in Egypt had me rolling on the floor.
So much character going on between Godzilla and Kong, and Mothra too swooping in to put Goji in his place.
I feel like they missed an oppurtunity to have King Cesar be the monster that Jia summons instead of Mothra.
Mothra woupdve made alot lore s3ane wince Mothra died in KOTM
Agreed
@@greenkidd529kotm mothra laid an egg before dying. It’s in the credits of kotm. Mothra is immortal. Whenever her body dies, the new egg hatches with all of her memories, powers and experience.
@@greenkidd529mothra is more lore accurate, she’s always been the yang to Godzilla’s yin. King Caeser would’ve genuinely made me jump out of my seat though, everyone in the theater loved seeing mothra so I think mothra is just as iconic as Godzilla at this point and it would be a crime to keep her out of
Godzilla Minus One and GXK are two different movies that have two different tones, which is why I love both of them so much. Minus One honors the '54 original, and GXK honors the Showa era with its over the top plots and epic battles. Its the perfect blend of seriousness of and action that I'm really glad the franchise is still going with
Just watched GxK, I thought it was superb and the perfect partner for Minus One on a movie night.
godzilla 2014 had a different tone to the godzilla x kong too
It's hilarious that you say Godzilla acted like a cat, because Adam Wingard came out and said that he based a lot of Godzilla's mannerisms on his cat Mischief.
... Aaaand oddly enough, the director of Godzilla Minus One has also come out and said that he based Godzilla on his cat.
I don't know what kinda cat he has but I'm leaning towards a big cat. 😂
Godzilla acting like a big cat is somehow oddly fitting.
We have two Norvegian Forest Cats...
Checks out.
@@WarpChaos Remember back in the late 60's, early 70's when he had a catlike face?
@@JohnnyProctor9 OK
@@WarpChaos Godzilla is best kitty!!
I went in with no expectations just wanted pure monster mayhem with my wife and son, and we got what we wanted. My son (4 years old) sat through the whole movie knowing the characters from having the toys and seen the previous movies. We were high fiving and yelling with joy at the fights and seeing mothra was a nice surprise that the trailers didn’t spoil. He liked minus one but couldn’t really get into it because of the subtitles, so this was perfect for the whole family. A really fun experience, and just pure silly sci fi galore. I don’t mind a serious amazing award winning Godzilla movie, but I also love the idea of off the wall bonkers Godzilla that can have laughs and cheers. 😅
Make sure to show him minus one when he can read so he can appreciate it
That’s why I love Godzilla as a franchise. It can be both really serious and breathtaking while also being goofy and cool.
I'm still waiting for the day Hollywood makes a giant monster movie with zero human story. Just an hour and a half of giant monsters doing giant monster things.
Two new empire movies?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Talk about The Empires Striking Back
Would have been quite funny if
kingdom of the planet of the apes was namned "Empire of the planets of the Apes"
And they have ice villians...
Pun City!
Ayyyyyy
@@Jrizzle7426 Yes, these movies are very ice to see
The frozen theme of these movies is a sign of the impending nuclear winter.
James...you're the OG Godzilla internet guy...you inspired countless people, your opinion matters to us 🙏💪
Loved Frozen empire, made me feel like I was there in the firehouse. It’s not perfect but I had fun and people laughed a lot on my theatre.
It's corny for this account name to say this, but I am eagerly waiting for Destoroyah to return to the screen.
James you’re the OG. Your review are still the best
All the reviews I have seen offhand have been negative so far on both movies. Thank you, watching a knowledgeable fan of the media give an honest counterpoint is refreshing.
A cute sad moment was when Ray smiled (when he saw the ghostbusters car drive by his shop fast with the sirens on). You could feel the memory through his smile. It was very heart warming
i felt this to.
There might be a lot of youtubers who post movie reviews, but I'm always looking for your take on movies, James! I went pretty hard into retro stuff BECAUSE of you and I love every single thing you've ever put out.
It's nice to hear a review from someone who is a fan.
Kong has an actual Bumblebee Transformer equipped to his right arm
I'm glad they brought the OG Ghostbusters back.
When it come down to Godzilla, James is always the one I'll hear opinion from.
It's nice to see reviews from someone who is a fan rather than some reviewer.
And Ghostbusters! James is always the go to!
To right @@bowmaj8666
I dare anyone to compete with James' Godzillathon! In length AND in passion, this guy knows his stuff, and it shows. Keep 'em coming, James!
when he was talking about being honored to still have people wanting to hear his opinions on movies, I was like, James, I have been WAITING since this movie was announced to hear his opinion on it, haha! When it comes to horror, monsters, and film making, James is the best reviewer I know of!
Review. I don’t refuse.
What does that even mean?
@@Boogie_the_catit’s in reference to when James (Rightfully so) refused to review the 2016 Ghosbusters film
I wish I could go back and unsee that movie
@@EatCarbsi still haven't seen it.
It means he's a hypocrite. @Boogie_the_cat
I love that there is room for a serious Godzilla movie and a BIG CREATURES PUNCH EACH OTHER Godzilla movie and both nailed what they were going for.
The reason why Mothra was in the movie was because she was originally supposed to be an original monstee. However, test audiences didn’t like the design, so the studio asked Toho if they can use Mothra instead.
Apparently, Mothra was intended from the start, but they didn't have the rights to her initially and used a new kaiju until they actually got the rights
I wouldn't mind James tackle Extreme Ghostbusters maybe in a future Monster Madness episode.
Absolutely! Some of the episodes were nightmare fuel. The steven king episode in particular
Especially the deadliners episode. That the whole hellraiser cenobite thing was crazy.
I hope someday they go all out and do a Godzilla: Final Wars or Destroy All Monsters remake to end the monsterverse
I think they were originally gonna do a Godzilla destroy all monsters but Godzilla vs Kong box office surpassed expectations so WB and Legendary made a sequel to that instead.
Godzilla x Kong bad summary: Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong fight Cranky Kong and Ice Yoshi.
Eh, more like lanky kong x furious george

"Wow, this is dogs and cats living together". "Mass hysteria !!" who remembers that line when James said it many years ago when he reviewed the Ghostbusters video game on the NES in one of his earlier AVGN episodes ? I immediately thought of it.
That is a famous line from the original Ghostbusters movie
@@sergiosarmiento4371 Oh, so that's where he got it from ? That makes sense.
Have you never seen Ghostbusters??
@@jerelminter
One monster I do want to see is Biollante. Unlike certain other monsters that were the result of humanity's general foolishness(including OG Godzilla), Biollante was the result of one person. In the original the scientist was trying to bring back his dead(sick?) daughter using Godzilla's cells.
In the Monsterverse the reason can be more sinister. We don't know if that eco-terrorist group is still around or not. If so I can see them creating their own Biollante. . .which in the long run may even cause the creation of Shin Godzilla.
I find it concerning that many media giants are just remaking or creating sequels of older properties. It's as though creativity, originality, and imagination have fallen off.
I still love your AVGN review of Ghostbusters NES.
Godzilla suplexing Kong had me screaming in the theater. My sons and I had a blast seeing it
Anything 80s and 90s, or monster movies I am always thinking of James!
I honestly didnt even know there was a new Ghostbusters movie haha. I did recently rewatch ghostbusters 2 and the 70s king kong
I wish James made more videos like this
WHY DO SO MANY YT MOVIE REVIEWERS HATE THEATRE?
Slimer never scared me, but he was hilariously cute!
Its Ironic that Patton Oswald was one of the guys to blast you on twitter from the 2016 no review I refuse video and now he is in the Frozen Empire movie.
Kinda shows what type of guy James is…an honest, and forgiving type of guy. He didn’t let Patton sour his experience and still enjoyed the movie. I’ll be honest, when I saw Patton in the trailer it made me slightly less excited to see the movie, all due to Oswald’s Twitter attack.
Ghostbusters needs to tighten up its writing. IMO.
I'll always watch your reviews because you actually give the reasons why you don't like something as opposed to quick zoom ins and random effects. Your reviews are well said and actually inspire thought about the movie instead of blanket statements for likes and views. Keep them coming!
It is Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop's 40 anniversary.
and Karate Kid.
And also the terminator as well 40 years
@@RichardBarkman that Franchise is DEAD And it should be, Two bad Sequels.
After several years of monster madness, I'm surprised you're surprised.
I really enjoyed Godzilla x Kong I had a crazy amount of fun. My friends just like you said the same thing about the hollow earth scenes but to me it had he opposite effect, I really enjoyed those scenes because I had to constantly imagine myself and man made structures in the hollow earth and just thinking about how massive everything is compared to the monsters and myself, it actually gave me goosebumps a couple of times especially when you see the that skeleton bridge and I imagined myself next to Kong and suko who are dwarfed by the massive skeleton just looking in awe at how long this creature is. Or when Godzilla let's Kong ride him in the clash against skar King and shimo the spectacle of it all is incredible to imagine massive monsters fighting in front of me with so much space for them to go all out
okay, when slimer showed up it was too awesome.
Unfortunately they ruined it in the trailer.
It's always nice to see James talk passionately about franchises he loves.
IT'S CINEMASSACRE'S MONSTER MADNESS: GODZILLATHON!
Imagine one day, there'll be enough combination of new Japanese Godzilla films and Monsterverse films to do a Godzillathon sequel.
Ghostbusters: The Last Firebender and Godzilla: The Rise of The Empire of The Apes of The Subterran Earth of The Earth
In the Frozen Empire finale', loved when Ray & Winston quipped in unison "Golden Years!". Outside of that moment, didn't really care for it.
Nothing better than hearing James talk about things he actually likes
I haven't seen Ghostbusters yet but I watched Kong on Easter Sunday and I thought it was super entertaining and fun to watch. A solid 8 1/2 out of 10. Most everyone actually gave it a clapping ovation at the end which I thought was fair.
James, EVERYONE appreciates your input when it comes to anything! Thank you for making these reviews!!
I found it funny that you could make the argument that they had the wrong taglines. With the passing of the torch to the new generation of Ghostbusters, it would have been a neat play on words for "A New Empire." However, in GxK they have a new bad guy who is creating a "Frozen Empire."
The best scene in FE is when the new group of Ghostbusters are united together fighting on one level and the originals are united on another fighting to preserve not only their invention, but their legacy.
Saw Godzilla X Kong yesterday and I enjoyed it. It’s genuinely just a fun movie with not much depth. If you just want entertaining monster fights and personality then I would recommend it
James is definitely the Godzilla guy, so manny people got to know the real Godzilla movies because of the 2008 Monster Madness GodzillaThon.
I kind of wish this came out yesterday, so it could of been “Review 2s-day” lol but seriously, this should be fun, I enjoyed both movies and glad Names enjoyed them too
As a fellow childhood fan of all these different IPs across the movie and video game nerdverse, I always find your reviews to be the most reliable as to whether I'm actually going to like said title. Thanks for continuing to make them and please keep up the awesome work James!
I love the part when KingKong turns to the camera and says: let’s see Egon’s card
I live in Mexico, and we never even got Godzilla -1 yet (at least I never saw it at my local theater). Now THIS is playing in theater and I'm still waiting for the other one. Can't wait until it's available to stream
What are you talking about? It was at Cinepolis on the 28th of last December. I believe they played it for a whole week
@@shiggydiggy8308 aww man. I looked for it and never saw it. Ah well, nothing I can do now but wait.

I literally watched both of these on Eater back to back! It was quite the experience
I'm surprised James mentioned Patton Oswalt at all. He's the one that kicked off the furor about James not reviewing the 2016 Ghostbusters
We love you James. Thats why!!!
You have been the nerd on UA-cam for years. So, anything nostalgia related we like to know your thoughts. Other UA-camr's usually complain about everything. Woke this, woke that. It gets repetetive.

I wish I could unsee it.
"I am the Ghostbusters guy...for better or worse."
I'm pretty sure he remembers too.
Nope. But that's more because I wasn't paying attention to those idiots.
Just wish James would have done a REVIEW of Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny from last year.
I’m not even a movie guy and I love these
GB 1 and 2 were buddy comedies at heart. That’s definitely something that’s missing in these new movies.
Godzilla x Kong was totally radical , Godzilla and Kiss in the same movie? That’s rad 🤘
That was so random, though.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Frozen Empire. I liked it as well, it’s nothing that special but it isn’t bad, I don’t get all the hate it’s getting from other reviewers..
I also snuck into Godzilla vs Kong after Ghostbusters 😅, that was a fun flick too, but I def didn’t get into it as much
Your content is always apreciated my friend!!! greetings from Ecuador!
I will always enjoy listening to what you have to say about films James, especially when it comes to Ghostbusters and Godzilla or anything else monster related.
I loved Ghostbusters for the Apple 2 as a kid but the bit where you had to sneak under the stay puft marshmallow man to get into the building for the ending was a nightmare worthy of AVGN treatment.
Thanks James, great review!

OG fan, will always continue to be a fan...I value your talent, opinion and efforts to entertain and inform us
I did find it kind of hilariously ironic that not only did both films have "empire" in their titles, but they also both showed beaches being frozen over by the villains.
As always James we love your movie reviews do keep 'em comin'! 👍
thanks for the content homie!
Mothra actually WAS crammed in at the last minute, it was meant to be an entirely new monster but decided it made the film too cluttered so replaced the visuals.
The role was always intended to be Mothra’s, the other creature was just something they had on standby in case they weren’t able to get the rights to Mothra
2 things James,
1. it is scary how it seems there are not room for new stories that everything that made money in the past is being sequeled, prequeled or presequeled, that suks, personally want new stories and not keep much nostalgia.
2. you are the man! we all grow together and empathize with your thoughs which are more likely what we think, you are our friend , so we want to know what you think!
