Okay, I have restrained myself to this point :D I enjoy these videos very much and they are very well done. I shall add my input to the story. The Silmaril was brought to Earendil by his wife Elwing after she cast herself into the sea to escape the sons of Feanor who attacked her people in pursuit of it. She was saved by the servants of Ulmo and brought to Earendil in the guise of a sea bird. The radiance of the Silmaril is what allowed Earendil to finally navigate the shadowy enchantments that hid Aman from the rest of the world and complete his mission on the behalf of the two kindreds.
Another lovely video. This helps to bring to mind all the confused and semi-remembered history gathered in a wild one summer "to read them all" vacation during my long wasted teens.
After the downfall, Sauron's spirit flees back to Mordor where he takes up the Ring that he left in Barad Dur during his confinement in Numenor. He then attacks Anarion and Isildur not long after they begin the founding of Gondor which leads to the formation of the Last Alliance.
I presume that taking up the ring allowed Sauron to take corporeal form again, since he put most of his power into it. After the last alliance he did not have access to the ring so took much longer to recover. Whilst after the war of the ring he no longer had enough power to be anything more than a spirit.
I agree to this analysis. Though, some keep up that Sauron took his ring to Numenor. But to me it seems clear that he left it in Mordor guarded by his Nazgul. The ring contained so much of the (Fea=soul) of Sauron that it could save his soul from desintegration during the drowning of Numenor. Sauron was a Maia which is a powerful spirit just below the Valar, capable to devise his own physical appearance. It seems that these spirits, notably evil ones, may suffer in such powers by calamities, or may give it up, and become vulnerable in their bodies. This is incredible! I've recently become interested in the deeper bits of Tolkien's work (studying his depth of world building) and I feel terribly drawn to Numenor...can't really explain why. I will definitely subscribe and check out more of your videos.

I think that it would have been great if you commented also the fact that the kings used to retire of their throne and die before becoming old and decayed, dying in a small lapse of time, and there was one king that because of his fear of death refused to yield his throne... Another great thing you omitted was the fact regarding the posibility of see the isle of avalone from numenor, and the voyages in search of the hidden path, and the subsequent acces to valinor before die of some mariners... Also about amandil and the question about how much he influenced the salvation of the faithful and the mistery of his destine. Well, thats all I think the tale of numenor is amazing.
Their is speculation from Randal Carlson that their was global destruction around the time of the younger dryas. And it’s from this that people like Graham Hancock are challenging the main stream academics by saying that we are a race with amnesia, we’ve literally forgotten something along the way and that we a race far older than what is said in the history books. It’s all very fascinating.
From what I have read in books with legends of ancient Greece there are many similarities between Atlantis and Numenor. First of all the geometric placing of both islands is similar in the fact that Atlantis is located on the west side of "The Pillars of Heracle"(Hercules) which is the mythological representation for Gibraltar Strait which means that the lost island was situated in the Atlantic Ocean (named so because of it) located S-W from Europe and W from Africa. There's a little known fact that at the west of the island of Atlantis there was another Continent named Lemuria (which also got "lost"/ disappeared similar tho the way that Aman was hidden from men in Tolkien's mythos) and 5 other islands. The people of Atlantis where people selected from all races of man here on Earth: white, red (ancient Egyptians), yellow and black similar to the way Numenor was founded by The Three Houses of Edain; In the Atlantis mythos it is stated that the atlantiens were favored by the Olimpic Pantheon, the gods gave them of long life, clairvoyance, and many mysterious or magical abilities that other men knew not. The island was under the protection of Poseidon and the atlanteans worshiped him alongside many other gods similar to Athens who's main protector was Athena but there were temples dedicated to the other gods. The atlanteans grew powerful and mighty and desired to conquer all men with their large fleet (the largest and best of all fleets in the world at that time), so it is presumed that they attacked Athens and lost (at about 9500 B.C.) after that Atlantis was lost ..."and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island" ( at about that time the continent of Lemuria and it's "fair", tall, powerful and magical people vanished also) While I was watching your video I was amazed by the similarities between Atlantis and Numenor as well as their differences and You asked if anyone knew more about this subject, this is what i remembered and i hope it helps you in some way to understand the inspiration behind Tolkien's world.
That's an insane amount of info! Do you watch Bright Insight, The Lost History Channel TKTC or Ancient Architects? There's a lot of research being done on Atlantis at the moment, mostly it's location Do you have any more info on Atlantis? Any other connections with our world to the world of middle earth? I'm trying to figure out all the similarities between mythologies and what we know as actual facts. There's a possibility of finding something.
Actually Earendil was half human half elf, his father was Tuor, an edain of the house of Hador and his mother was Idris, the elven princess of Gondolin, daughter of Turgon. Elwing was the granddaughter of Beren, an edain of the house of Beor, and Luthien, daughter of the elven King Thingol of Doriath and the Maia Melian.
This video is old, but if you still read comments then read this one: Atlantis was probably at current day Azores arquipelago and it had an empire spanning much of the Atlantic Ocean basin. During the Pleistocene, the period when the Azores were higher up in elevation (not only because of sea level but also because of plate uplifting), there was a sizable land mass there on the Azores region and its size was somewhere in between Iberia and Anatolia. Its culture was far more advanced than our current culture, but its foundations were based on an ethereal form of energy rather than material energy like we use it today (petrol, coal). This energy is called Vril by some, and the Atlanteans could harness its infinite power to build wondrous things without harming the environment. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and Atlantis did fall. However, just like Numenor, it left behind vestiges of its existence. The cultures I personally believe were descendant from Atlantis on a direct or indirect form are the old kingdom egyptians, summerians and norte chico civilization You should check out the Atlantean Gardens channel or read Robert Sepher's books about it if you find this matter interesting.

Wonderful video honouring the greatest work of fiction in modern times. Regarding your question on the similarity to the tale of Atlantis, the similarities are striking. I'm not sure if someone else here has answered the questions for you, but Solon, Plato's familial predecessor who, I think 200 years before Plato (450 BC), travelled to Egypt and there first learned of Atlantis, was clear that it was a moral degradation that corrupted that great land. Tolkien extrapolates what would corrupt a society if it had gained everything it could save one thing, and was doomed to stare at that thing to its west, every day, without hope of attaining it: immortality. In Plato's account, the nation of Atlantis had a special connection with Poseidon, god of the sea. He was their patron lord. A great statue of him stood in the heart of their capital which was named after him. Atlanteans were passionate about horses which were the favoured animal of Poseidon. And in the end, it was Poseidon that initiated the laying to waste of Atlantis. This is clearly a reference to Ulmo's influence in the tale of Elenna. The kings of Atlantis (which was divided into 9 realms, but was originally many more because for some time it had been subject to cataclysms earlier in its history that had destroyed parts of it), became ever more desirous of material things. They extended themselves to conquer all the lands they could round about the Atlantic and then made military and exploratory forays into the Mediterranean, subjugating all of the coastal societies, save one; the ancestors of the Greeks. Plato says that ancestors of the Greeks alone withstood the might of Atlantis and staved off the enslavement of all the lands of the Mediterranean sea. But then in a single day and night while the battle was being fought, the entire island nation was devoured by the sea, and so were their forces in the Mediterranean at the time, and much of the force of those Antediluvian Greeks. Plato states that Solon was told this all happened 9000 years before his time, which works out to 11,000 years before the present. Incidentally, long before humans are understood (at this time) to have created stable centralist nations and cultures. I am therefore reminded of Ar-Pharazon setting foot on the shores of Aman and at once being swallowed up. Just switch to the other side of the world. Tolkien would have been fully aware of this tale from Plato's Timaeus and Critias. I find it difficult to believe Atalante to be a coincidence. If we keep in mind what Tolkien was doing, which was creating a mythology of England that could explain it's present, provide a secret history, integrate plausible, fully fleshed-out ancestral languages of English, and integrate European and other mythology into a coherent whole that would then gain a sense of realism, a sense of gravity in it's solution that to this day enchants us all, then you are forced to realise that this must all have been deliberate. And I thank god we have it because it has enriched our lives.

Galu, what's your take on the biggest host ever assembled? I know it is widely believed to be the Host of The Valar in the end of the first age, but the fact that Manwe had to ask for Eru's intervention upon the site of the Numenorean host leads me to believe that Ar Pharazon's army was the largest ever seen on Arda.
Elrond and Elros are descendants of all three houses of the Edain: Beor, Haleth, and Hador, and all three clans of the elves: Vanyar, Noldor, Teleri, and a descendant of Melian the Maia, so there is actually alot coming in which is basically the opposite of incest.
The Island of Elenna also sounds an awful lot like an actual fabled island in our own world, a place called Hy Brasil; which I certainly hope you have heard about. :D Also, there is a crap load of LotR Anime because it takes almost no talent to draw in that particular art style. Also, regarding Atlantis. Plato Claimed that the Gods rained fire down on them and sunk the island for becoming greedy and pursuing immoral things. So yes it is Elenna is basically Atlantis lol
I am finding it difficult to place where men awoke and where they dwelt before they joined the Valar in the War of Wrath. Can anyone shed light as to how the men were before the time of Numenor?
Atlanteans became greedy with power and domination. They used their technology to wage war with Athens, the favorite city of the Gods. They proclaimed themseves to be "as strong as the Athenean Gods" and when the Athenean navy tried to fight back in the name of their Gods, they where obliterated by Atlantean technology (it is stated that the Atlanteans would use "sun-rays" to burn the Athenean ships). This angered the Gods and in one night they sent "fire and earthquakes" and sunk the island.
The Númenorians, like Melkor before them, turned against Eru Ilúvatar even though they had direct knowledge of him (although you could argue that the generations that did turn against him were many years from direct knowledge) for the same reasons Adam & Eve and Lucifer before them turned against God even though they had direct knowledge of Him. Tolkien is telling the same story in a different way..

The only similarity is that a being, who strove for chaos, convinced them to do a bad thing. 1) Adam and Eve didn't turn against God they disobeyed him; the Númenóreans set out to do more than just disobey. 2) Adam and Eve were the first humans, the Númenóreans are an entire nation of people way down the line in the chronology. 3) Sauron is not this universes Devil, Melkor has clear parallels with Satan; Sauron doesn't. Sauron would be the equivalent of a satanic version of Gabriel. 4) Having direct knowledge of their God has nothing to do with either story, Adam and Eve nor the Númenóreans did what they did because the felt that God didn't existence. The Númenóreans story is closest to a retelling of Atlantis. Tolkien may have drawn inspiration from x y z but it is vital we all understand he strove for uniqueness. His intention was not to create allegory or even retelling he set out to create something new. I find that people are very quick to link stories from the Bible to anything they can and while there are incredibly clear similarities between some aspects of religion and tolkien's world, it is not just a rehashed version of the bibles stories. Lastly the logical atheist that I am would also argue that the bible has a story to cover most aspects of life as it is intended to be applied to most areas of life and to 'do the right thing' in those areas. In order to do that they need full coverage. :-P
The Númenórean story is more like the story from Noah's flood when you think about it. Before God flooded the Earth it was said that men could live for hundreds of years Adam lived to be 900 something years old. Even after the flood men could live for hundreds of years. God had to flood the Earth because man had became so wicked that every thought that man made was pure evil and hate. God saved four families that day that made up the nations of man later The Babylons, Sumerians, Egyptians, Kushites, Israelite etc... In the Númenórean story men could live for hundreds of years, Sauron corrupted there hearts made them turn from Eru Ilùvatar the Nùmenòreans turned evil and had hate. They tried to make war on Valinor but got wiped out including there whole world aka Nùmenor. The flooding of Nùmenor was also world changing because it was in this moment that the world became circular. There are many connections to the story of Nùmenor and The Flood, it's even said that Tolkien based the Nùmenor story on the Flood.

I think it dubious that the Sun Lands are canonical but that is juts because I have never come across them in my reading (to my memory anyway). According to what little the internet has to offer, they are the equivalent of Valinor on Middle-earth's east side.
+Arachîr Galudirithon I know that sun lands are in the west edge of the world but there is also lands south of aman and basically whole world is it possible that numenorions might have been in those lands in there expansion around the world or .......
One thing I've always found hard to take seriously is the idea that 2 powerful kingdoms (and yes, I know Arnor was probably pretty much "under-powered" from the start) could be set up from one small faction of the original Numenoreans, coming to Middle Earth in a bunch of ships. I know there were already some Dunedain settled there, but still, the numbers don't add up. They then are able to contribute substantially to the armies of the Last Alliance. And even then, after who knows how many were killed in battle, they are *still* able to go back to building up two kingdoms on Middle Earth. I understand their population would have built up in later centuries, but how many people could they have started out with?
keep in mind that the numenorian successors existed for 110 years before sauron's first ever attack, able to build minas anor, minas ithil and osgiliath all in the time before he ever thought of attacking gondor they also seem able to breed at the same rate as other men so its likely elendil and his sons openly encouraged repopulation
Yeah, not only were there already Numenorean colonies (and big cities like Pelargir), but look how much difference a hundred years can make. For instance, look at America in 1750 vs 1850. Or 1850 vs 1950, European immigration notwithstanding.
According to Plato, Atlantis builds colonies across the western coasts of Europe and the eastern coasts of the Americas, and in the process they push back or slaughter the indigenous people, and the only civilization to oppose them was Athens, and they fought back the Atlanteans until Atlantis loses favor with the gods and is destroyed.
how many languages did Tolkien make? Quenya, Sindarin, Khuzdul, and this adunaic or whatever it is. I know they aren't all complete, but still, it's a lot.
I don't know whether I read this somewhere or whether I got this connection solely based on resemblance, but isn't Sorontil just a different name for Thorondor in other language? What does it mean.
ive watched a documentary about atlantis they say that zeus came to the men their saw they were eating meat and cannibalism which pissed him off then he sunk atlantis
I have never done any in=depth research of the legend of Atlantis. But it is never described as having anything to do with the gods. That makes it a bit more real-like, something that could have actually existed. As to the actual location, some say the Azores are near the final resting place of Atlantis. Some say it was actually in the Mediterranean Sea, which was the biggest body of water to most of the civilized western world in those days. Only the Phoenicians reputedly went beyond Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean, travelling to Brittannia to get tin, which was needed to make bronze. A strong case could be made that the Island of Thera was actually Atlantis. Though the story was a bit beefed up over the centuries I guess.
Earendil is not human, he is half elf, but he also had some godly blood in himself from Lutien herself.. Those few half elves that ever been born had a special gift, they could decide if they want to be an elf or human. Earendil and his son Elrond decided to be elves, but Elros (also Earendil's son, and Elrond's brother) decided to be human. Earendil had silmaril in his possession on his journey to Valinor, same one that Beren and Lutien acquired from Morgot himself. It is truth that he was the first to come to Valinor, after the curse of Mandos, and it is said that it was possible that the light of the silmaril helped him not to be killed.
im going to play a D&D game where half-elves are reflavored to be Numenoreans: long lived, more clever, natural leaders but without the elven aesthetic they usually have, and especially without them being offspring of elves and humans. They will be High Men instead, persisting in smaller population numbers throughout the world despite their own homeland being lost. now i just need a group..
May I ask, is the short story in The Peoples of Middle Earth about the village of Agar and their encounter with the Númenóreans considered "canon", or did Tolkien explicitly say that its not? I've wondered that for quite a bit now. I found their explanation for their ship's Black Sails quite interesting. Also you said that Sauron was killed after the Akallabêth and did not return until the Third Age, but he came back during the War of the Last Alliance, right?. Maybe you meant his physical body was destroyed, I'm not sure if he actually had a physical body at the time or not. Probably a silly question and I'm just hearing/remembering things wrong.
Most would call "Tal-Elmar" a reliable source, yes :) Even if it must be handled with some care in parts, as with any draft never finished, and some things are open to debate, it's not a controversial text for the schoolars. And gladly so, since we have so very few alternative resouces for the period and involved peoples, hehe.
It's never explicitly stated by Tolkien that Tal-Elmar is not canon. And yes, whilst the Númenóreans bear the Stars of Elbereth in the night sky, they're still cunts to anyone that isn't them.
Strictly speaking, for the sake of those who do not study Tokien who are reading this, JRR didn't sort his work as 'canon', all we know are that he as a rule granted presidence to his published work (but did not always follow that either, whether intentionally or from forgetfulness), and he generally adjusted what he worked on to match certain previous texts and ideas, but certainly not alway as the legendarium evolved. As for the rest what we got, texts and ideas as said over decades got replaced, abandoned, some are in full or part in contradiction with other works granted value, and thus must be put in question, or are simply incompatible. Some scholars grant presidence to a youngest text by default even if JRR isk nown for making drafts and rejecting them afterwards and even if they may contradict with other material, while some won't accept conclusions unless the main source was rewritten (I've seen persons claim Tuor did slew lots of Balrogs because The Fall of Gondlin says so, even if JRR's later revisions of the Balrogs render that incredible and later summaries leave that out), some people consider the Letters to have little worth while others deem them important, etc. etc. And even when a book is deemed by all in a debate of 'canonical' worth (usually LotR and The Hobbit), interpetation of content in those will still differ. "The truth is out there" haha. Point being, the status of canon is up for debate (and is often debated) among JRR's fans and scholars, as it are we who try to define it ^^
I love your comment on the fact that there's SO much freaking anime of the First Age. It's so irritating to try to look for photos and only see anime. I just don't understand why that attracts so many anime fans.

Very possibly. The Tar- prefix is Quenyan and was dropped in defiance of the Valar. Although when the Faithful came to ME they then started using Sindarin place names instead and taking Sindarin names as well. I am not sure what caused this switch. If we assume though that the history was the same just without Númenor drowning then Arathorn wouldn't have taken a Tar- prefix because he was never king. De jure yes but de facto no and that is what dictated it. :)
arnt the corsairs of umbar also descendants of Númenor? in the books it refers to them as black Númenor

+Jack the critic Umbar has been raided and attacked by Gondor numerous times and by the time of the war of the ring, the corsairs are just Haradrim. There might be 1 or 2 people with the blood but not a significant population.
Yeah... but unlike europe they were like 1000th cousins at least 800 removed from eachother, magically related but not really genetically lol. Melkor being the first and most powerful leading his Maiar may share similarity mainly with Christianity's fallen angels. Melkor's desire to destroy world and bring back darkness is very in line with destruction Cronos and his titans were believed to bring if released from Tartorus were Melkor essentially is till Dagor Dagorath when the very Olympian vs Titan appearing final showdown will happen.

In reply to your other comment an hour ago as well: All the lore is found nicely in the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Appendices of Return of the King and Unfinished Tales. Now I also own the complete history of Middle-earth but it is more for clarification than it is for pure knowledge download.
* Lords of Anduine were descendants from eldest daughter of 2 or 3 king of Numenor. The rules were probably changed by 6th or 7th King so his only child a daughter could become queen * Aragorn & Arwen were separated by 25 + 25 generations at-least , really that hint was uncalled for. Its NOT GoT.

Men were created to leave the world afterwards. The soul was restless and the body would decay to free the soul. The Valar stated that mortals entering the undying lands would come to a fatal disharmony between an everlasting body and and a wayward soul.
@@jmitterii2 being Ring bearers the were granted exception for the great burden they carried and mighty deed they performed. The damage done on their minds by the ring (specifically Frodo and Bilbo) could only be healed in the Undying lands
What you said about queens was wrong, Catherine the Great was queen of russia, Elizabeth the First is held as one of the greatest monarch in english history, Maria Theresa was Holy roman empress to mention a few.

Nobody had a last name. I have no idea why but the world didn't have last names in Medieval times either. I would presume that last names have come about as bureaucracy replaces chaos and people needed to be identified. In a time when you would never really ever leave your town or village, last names wouldn't have been needed. I can only guess Tolkien based it on that.
Well, nobody does (except the sneaky little Hobbitses) and Ngugi and Arachîr himself explained it well. And to add to their statements, the way they could identify each other is by the 'x son of y' phrase. For example, a man from Dol Amroth named Dirluin goes to Minas Tirith and meets a man there with the exact same name. To identify who is who, they add the 'son of y'. In the case of Sindarin and Quenya, they use the suffix -ion, -iel for the women. Dirluin of Dol Amroth is the son of Malbor, so that makes him Dirluin Malborion of Dol Amroth. Dirluin of Minas Tirith is the son of Gelmir, so that makes him Dirluin Gelmirion of Minas Tirith.
Does that mean Ar-Pharazôn and some Númenórean soldiers with him are still alive during the War of the Ring, just trapped in the Caves of the Forgotten?

It has been suggested yeah as the undying lands tend to give immortality to those who land there.
Arachîr Galudirithon It would be cool to see him in a future Middle Earth title, but highly unlikely. I wonder whether he and his men would fight for the forces of good or evil. Anyway, thank's for your informative videos.
George R R Martin WISHES he was as good as Tolkien! Minutiae indeed... Tolkien pretty much wrote an entire history of Arda, missing out Elrond's trips to Walmart was probably a wise choice!
If they gave Numenor to the hobbits, they would be still living there, isolated. Because hobbits don't even go out of The Shire. Just imagine giving them a whole island!🤔 Not Numenor but Hobbitor😂
I never found the Númenorian revolt that unbelievable. We as a reader know that the gods of the world are the real thing, they didn't. Defeating Sauron, one of these "gods" prolly didn't help either.

+Minastir1 I agree it is believable but from a pain of loss angle. You watch your family and friends wither and die of old age and yet, you know that just over the sea there is a land of immortality. It would call to a humans very soul. That instinct to keep people alive, and of course yourself, is very strong in humans. It is strong in humans in our world so add in some creatures who actually have immortality and it is inevitable that we would seek it out.
I would not like to live forever. I know once my life is complete that I will pass on as others have before me. That is the legacy that I will leave to my children. When my journey is complete that I can rest in which no one can deny me.
Joker, you only say that because we get old and tired. And have to work for a living and if lucky can retire and live of a limited retirement. If you were an oligarch elite with loads of money, you'd be singing a different song. You could have your rest no one can deny you any time. You're immortal, so you get tired, take a few century or longer nap. Wake up and check it out, still a bit bushed, take another nap. It's the restraints of reality that make us yearn for death: old age, requirement of work for someone else for 99% of us on the planet, mental problems like chemical imbalances, illness, injuries, etc. Take reality away, all those things, and you sing a different tune indeed.

Hey there, how's everyone doing? Good, good. My name is Sauron Foley, and I am a motivational speaker. First, a few things about me. I am twice disembodied, and although I used to have a whole tower, I live in a van down by the river!
Okay, I have restrained myself to this point :D I enjoy these videos very much and they are very well done. I shall add my input to the story. The Silmaril was brought to Earendil by his wife Elwing after she cast herself into the sea to escape the sons of Feanor who attacked her people in pursuit of it. She was saved by the servants of Ulmo and brought to Earendil in the guise of a sea bird. The radiance of the Silmaril is what allowed Earendil to finally navigate the shadowy enchantments that hid Aman from the rest of the world and complete his mission on the behalf of the two kindreds.
Another lovely video. This helps to bring to mind all the confused and semi-remembered history gathered in a wild one summer "to read them all" vacation during my long wasted teens.

After the downfall, Sauron's spirit flees back to Mordor where he takes up the Ring that he left in Barad Dur during his confinement in Numenor. He then attacks Anarion and Isildur not long after they begin the founding of Gondor which leads to the formation of the Last Alliance.
I presume that taking up the ring allowed Sauron to take corporeal form again, since he put most of his power into it. After the last alliance he did not have access to the ring so took much longer to recover. Whilst after the war of the ring he no longer had enough power to be anything more than a spirit.

Sauron was also made incapable of ever appearing 'fair' to Man after the downfall.
Perhaps Melian, after the death of Thingol, is a similar case. So much of her power invested in the Girdle & Thingol that she was "reduced".
I agree to this analysis. Though, some keep up that Sauron took his ring to Numenor. But to me it seems clear that he left it in Mordor guarded by his Nazgul. The ring contained so much of the (Fea=soul) of Sauron that it could save his soul from desintegration during the drowning of Numenor. Sauron was a Maia which is a powerful spirit just below the Valar, capable to devise his own physical appearance. It seems that these spirits, notably evil ones, may suffer in such powers by calamities, or may give it up, and become vulnerable in their bodies. This is incredible! I've recently become interested in the deeper bits of Tolkien's work (studying his depth of world building) and I feel terribly drawn to Numenor...can't really explain why. I will definitely subscribe and check out more of your videos.

I think that it would have been great if you commented also the fact that the kings used to retire of their throne and die before becoming old and decayed, dying in a small lapse of time, and there was one king that because of his fear of death refused to yield his throne...
Another great thing you omitted was the fact regarding the posibility of see the isle of avalone from numenor, and the voyages in search of the hidden path, and the subsequent acces to valinor before die of some mariners...
Also about amandil and the question about how much he influenced the salvation of the faithful and the mistery of his destine.

Their is speculation from Randal Carlson that their was global destruction around the time of the younger dryas. And it’s from this that people like Graham Hancock are challenging the main stream academics by saying that we are a race with amnesia, we’ve literally forgotten something along the way and that we a race far older than what is said in the history books. Excellent video. One correction: Earendil was not an Edain as you state. Earendil is half-man and half-man. His mother was Idril, daughter of Turgon.
From what I have read in books with legends of ancient Greece there are many similarities between Atlantis and Numenor.
First of all the geometric placing of both islands is similar in the fact that Atlantis is located on the west side of "The Pillars of Heracle"(Hercules) which is the mythological representation for Gibraltar Strait which means that the lost island was situated in the Atlantic Ocean (named so because of it) located S-W from Europe and W from Africa. There's a little known fact that at the west of the island of Atlantis there was another Continent named Lemuria (which also got "lost"/ disappeared similar tho the way that Aman was hidden from men in Tolkien's mythos) and 5 other islands.
The people of Atlantis where people selected from all races of man here on Earth: white, red (ancient Egyptians), yellow and black similar to the way Numenor was founded by The Three Houses of Edain;
In the Atlantis mythos it is stated that the atlantiens were favored by the Olimpic Pantheon, the gods gave them of long life, clairvoyance, and many mysterious or magical abilities that other men knew not.
The island was under the protection of Poseidon and the atlanteans worshiped him alongside many other gods similar to Athens who's main protector was Athena but there were temples dedicated to the other gods.
The atlanteans grew powerful and mighty and desired to conquer all men with their large fleet (the largest and best of all fleets in the world at that time), so it is presumed that they attacked Athens and lost (at about 9500 B.C.) after that Atlantis was lost ..."and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island"
( at about that time the continent of Lemuria and it's "fair", tall, powerful and magical people vanished also)
While I was watching your video I was amazed by the similarities between Atlantis and Numenor as well as their differences and You asked if anyone knew more about this subject, this is what i remembered and i hope it helps you in some way to understand the inspiration behind Tolkien's world.

Actually Earendil was half human half elf, his father was Tuor, an edain of the house of Hador and his mother was Idris, the elven princess of Gondolin, daughter of Turgon. Elwing was the granddaughter of Beren, an edain of the house of Beor, and Luthien, daughter of the elven King Thingol of Doriath and the Maia Melian.

Atlantis was probably at current day Azores arquipelago and it had an empire spanning much of the Atlantic Ocean basin. During the Pleistocene, the period when the Azores were higher up in elevation (not only because of sea level but also because of plate uplifting), there was a sizable land mass there on the Azores region and its size was somewhere in between Iberia and Anatolia. Its culture was far more advanced than our current culture, but its foundations were based on an ethereal form of energy rather than material energy like we use it today (petrol, coal). This energy is called Vril by some, and the Atlanteans could harness its infinite power to build wondrous things without harming the environment. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and Atlantis did fall. However, just like Numenor, it left behind vestiges of its existence. The cultures I personally believe were descendant from Atlantis on a direct or indirect form are the old kingdom egyptians, summerians and norte chico civilization

Wonderful video honouring the greatest work of fiction in modern times. Regarding your question on the similarity to the tale of Atlantis, the similarities are striking. I'm not sure if someone else here has answered the questions for you, but Solon, Plato's familial predecessor who, I think 200 years before Plato (450 BC), travelled to Egypt and there first learned of Atlantis, was clear that it was a moral degradation that corrupted that great land. Tolkien extrapolates what would corrupt a society if it had gained everything it could save one thing, and was doomed to stare at that thing to its west, every day, without hope of attaining it: immortality.
In Plato's account, the nation of Atlantis had a special connection with Poseidon, god of the sea. He was their patron lord. A great statue of him stood in the heart of their capital which was named after him. Atlanteans were passionate about horses which were the favoured animal of Poseidon. And in the end, it was Poseidon that initiated the laying to waste of Atlantis. This is clearly a reference to Ulmo's influence in the tale of Elenna. The kings of Atlantis (which was divided into 9 realms, but was originally many more because for some time it had been subject to cataclysms earlier in its history that had destroyed parts of it), became ever more desirous of material things. They extended themselves to conquer all the lands they could round about the Atlantic and then made military and exploratory forays into the Mediterranean, subjugating all of the coastal societies, save one; the ancestors of the Greeks. Plato says that ancestors of the Greeks alone withstood the might of Atlantis and staved off the enslavement of all the lands of the Mediterranean sea. But then in a single day and night while the battle was being fought, the entire island nation was devoured by the sea, and so were their forces in the Mediterranean at the time, and much of the force of those Antediluvian Greeks. Plato states that Solon was told this all happened 9000 years before his time, which works out to 11,000 years before the present. Incidentally, long before humans are understood (at this time) to have created stable centralist nations and cultures.
I am therefore reminded of Ar-Pharazon setting foot on the shores of Aman and at once being swallowed up. Just switch to the other side of the world. Tolkien would have been fully aware of this tale from Plato's Timaeus and Critias. I find it difficult to believe Atalante to be a coincidence. If we keep in mind what Tolkien was doing, which was creating a mythology of England that could explain it's present, provide a secret history, integrate plausible, fully fleshed-out ancestral languages of English, and integrate European and other mythology into a coherent whole that would then gain a sense of realism, a sense of gravity in it's solution that to this day enchants us all, then you are forced to realise that this must all have been deliberate. And I thank god we have it because it has enriched our lives.

Galu, what's your take on the biggest host ever assembled? I know it is widely believed to be the Host of The Valar in the end of the first age, but the fact that Manwe had to ask for Eru's intervention upon the site of the Numenorean host leads me to believe that Ar Pharazon's army was the largest ever seen on Arda.
Elrond and Elros are descendants of all three houses of the Edain: Beor, Haleth, and Hador, and all three clans of the elves: Vanyar, Noldor, Teleri, and a descendant of Melian the Maia, so there is actually alot coming in which is basically the opposite of incest.

The Island of Elenna also sounds an awful lot like an actual fabled island in our own world, a place called Hy Brasil; which I certainly hope you have heard about. :D

Atlanteans became greedy with power and domination. They used their technology to wage war with Athens, the favorite city of the Gods. They proclaimed themseves to be "as strong as the Athenean Gods" and when the Athenean navy tried to fight back in the name of their Gods, they where obliterated by Atlantean technology (it is stated that the Atlanteans would use "sun-rays" to burn the Athenean ships). This angered the Gods and in one night they sent "fire and earthquakes" and sunk the island.

The Númenorians, like Melkor before them, turned against Eru Ilúvatar even though they had direct knowledge of him (although you could argue that the generations that did turn against him were many years from direct knowledge) for the same reasons Adam & Eve and Lucifer before them turned against God even though they had direct knowledge of Him. Tolkien is telling the same story in a different way..

The only similarity is that a being, who strove for chaos, convinced them to do a bad thing. 1) Adam and Eve didn't turn against God they disobeyed him; the Númenóreans set out to do more than just disobey. 2) Adam and Eve were the first humans, the Númenóreans are an entire nation of people way down the line in the chronology. 3) Sauron is not this universes Devil, Melkor has clear parallels with Satan; Sauron doesn't. Sauron would be the equivalent of a satanic version of Gabriel. 4) Having direct knowledge of their God has nothing to do with either story, Adam and Eve nor the Númenóreans did what they did because the felt that God didn't existence.
The Númenóreans story is closest to a retelling of Atlantis. Tolkien may have drawn inspiration from x y z but it is vital we all understand he strove for uniqueness. His intention was not to create allegory or even retelling he set out to create something new.
I find that people are very quick to link stories from the Bible to anything they can and while there are incredibly clear similarities between some aspects of religion and tolkien's world, it is not just a rehashed version of the bibles stories.
Lastly the logical atheist that I am would also argue that the bible has a story to cover most aspects of life as it is intended to be applied to most areas of life and to 'do the right thing' in those areas. In order to do that they need full coverage. :-P
The Númenórean story is more like the story from Noah's flood when you think about it. Before God flooded the Earth it was said that men could live for hundreds of years Adam lived to be 900 something years old. Even after the flood men could live for hundreds of years. God had to flood the Earth because man had became so wicked that every thought that man made was pure evil and hate. God saved four families that day that made up the nations of man later The Babylons, Sumerians, Egyptians, Kushites, Israelite etc...
In the Númenórean story men could live for hundreds of years, Sauron corrupted there hearts made them turn from Eru Ilùvatar the Nùmenòreans turned evil and had hate. They tried to make war on Valinor but got wiped out including there whole world aka Nùmenor. The flooding of Nùmenor was also world changing because it was in this moment that the world became circular.
There are many connections to the story of Nùmenor and The Flood, it's even said that Tolkien based the Nùmenor story on the Flood.

I think it dubious that the Sun Lands are canonical but that is juts because I have never come across them in my reading (to my memory anyway). According to what little the internet has to offer, they are the equivalent of Valinor on Middle-earth's east side.

They're basically the Sun's port.
One thing I've always found hard to take seriously is the idea that 2 powerful kingdoms (and yes, I know Arnor was probably pretty much "under-powered" from the start) could be set up from one small faction of the original Numenoreans, coming to Middle Earth in a bunch of ships. I know there were already some Dunedain settled there, but still, the numbers don't add up.
They then are able to contribute substantially to the armies of the Last Alliance. And even then, after who knows how many were killed in battle, they are *still* able to go back to building up two kingdoms on Middle Earth. I understand their population would have built up in later centuries, but how many people could they have started out with?
keep in mind that the numenorian successors existed for 110 years before sauron's first ever attack, able to build minas anor, minas ithil and osgiliath all in the time before he ever thought of attacking gondor
they also seem able to breed at the same rate as other men so its likely elendil and his sons openly encouraged repopulation
Yeah, not only were there already Numenorean colonies (and big cities like Pelargir), but look how much difference a hundred years can make. For instance, look at America in 1750 vs 1850. Or 1850 vs 1950, European immigration notwithstanding.
According to Plato, Atlantis builds colonies across the western coasts of Europe and the eastern coasts of the Americas, and in the process they push back or slaughter the indigenous people, and the only civilization to oppose them was Athens, and they fought back the Atlanteans until Atlantis loses favor with the gods and is destroyed.

Well, he could defest them militarily with the one ring, but he did successfully destroy them anyway by manipulating and dominating their minds.
Frankly, Sauron is sort of a badass to rebel Eru & there is nothing really wrong in seeking Eternal life...

I have never done any in=depth research of the legend of Atlantis. But it is never described as having anything to do with the gods. That makes it a bit more real-like, something that could have actually existed. As to the actual location, some say the Azores are near the final resting place of Atlantis. Some say it was actually in the Mediterranean Sea, which was the biggest body of water to most of the civilized western world in those days. Only the Phoenicians reputedly went beyond Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean, travelling to Brittannia to get tin, which was needed to make bronze. A strong case could be made that the Island of Thera was actually Atlantis. Though the story was a bit beefed up over the centuries I guess.

Earendil is not human, he is half elf, but he also had some godly blood in himself from Lutien herself.. Those few half elves that ever been born had a special gift, they could decide if they want to be an elf or human. Earendil and his son Elrond decided to be elves, but Elros (also Earendil's son, and Elrond's brother) decided to be human.
Earendil had silmaril in his possession on his journey to Valinor, same one that Beren and Lutien acquired from Morgot himself.
It is truth that he was the first to come to Valinor, after the curse of Mandos, and it is said that it was possible that the light of the silmaril helped him not to be killed.
They say Elwë was the greatest leader of his time save for Mon Tanna and Maerino.

im going to play a D&D game where half-elves are reflavored to be Numenoreans: long lived, more clever, natural leaders but without the elven aesthetic they usually have, and especially without them being offspring of elves and humans. They will be High Men instead, persisting in smaller population numbers throughout the world despite their own homeland being lost. now i just need a group..

May I ask, is the short story in The Peoples of Middle Earth about the village of Agar and their encounter with the Númenóreans considered "canon", or did Tolkien explicitly say that its not? I've wondered that for quite a bit now. I found their explanation for their ship's Black Sails quite interesting.
Also you said that Sauron was killed after the Akallabêth and did not return until the Third Age, but he came back during the War of the Last Alliance, right?. Maybe you meant his physical body was destroyed, I'm not sure if he actually had a physical body at the time or not. Probably a silly question and I'm just hearing/remembering things wrong.
Most would call "Tal-Elmar" a reliable source, yes :) Even if it must be handled with some care in parts, as with any draft never finished, and some things are open to debate, it's not a controversial text for the schoolars. And gladly so, since we have so very few alternative resouces for the period and involved peoples, hehe.
It's never explicitly stated by Tolkien that Tal-Elmar is not canon.
And yes, whilst the Númenóreans bear the Stars of Elbereth in the night sky, they're still cunts to anyone that isn't them.
Strictly speaking, for the sake of those who do not study Tokien who are reading this, JRR didn't sort his work as 'canon', all we know are that he as a rule granted presidence to his published work (but did not always follow that either, whether intentionally or from forgetfulness), and he generally adjusted what he worked on to match certain previous texts and ideas, but certainly not alway as the legendarium evolved.
As for the rest what we got, texts and ideas as said over decades got replaced, abandoned, some are in full or part in contradiction with other works granted value, and thus must be put in question, or are simply incompatible.
Some scholars grant presidence to a youngest text by default even if JRR isk nown for making drafts and rejecting them afterwards and even if they may contradict with other material, while some won't accept conclusions unless the main source was rewritten (I've seen persons claim Tuor did slew lots of Balrogs because The Fall of Gondlin says so, even if JRR's later revisions of the Balrogs render that incredible and later summaries leave that out), some people consider the Letters to have little worth while others deem them important, etc. etc.
And even when a book is deemed by all in a debate of 'canonical' worth (usually LotR and The Hobbit), interpetation of content in those will still differ. "The truth is out there" haha.
Point being, the status of canon is up for debate (and is often debated) among JRR's fans and scholars, as it are we who try to define it ^^

Very possibly. The Tar- prefix is Quenyan and was dropped in defiance of the Valar. Although when the Faithful came to ME they then started using Sindarin place names instead and taking Sindarin names as well. I am not sure what caused this switch. If we assume though that the history was the same just without Númenor drowning then Arathorn wouldn't have taken a Tar- prefix because he was never king. De jure yes but de facto no and that is what dictated it. :)
arnt the corsairs of umbar also descendants of Númenor? in the books it refers to them as black Númenor
+Jack the critic Umbar has been raided and attacked by Gondor numerous times and by the time of the war of the ring, the corsairs are just Haradrim. There might be 1 or 2 people with the blood but not a significant population.

All the lore is found nicely in the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Appendices of Return of the King and Unfinished Tales. Now I also own the complete history of Middle-earth but it is more for clarification than it is for pure knowledge download.

Men were created to leave the world afterwards. The soul was restless and the body would decay to free the soul. The Valar stated that mortals entering the undying lands would come to a fatal disharmony between an everlasting body and and a wayward soul.
Why was Frodo and later Sam allowed and did go to the undying lands?

The damage done on their minds by the ring (specifically Frodo and Bilbo) could only be healed in the Undying lands

Nobody had a last name. I have no idea why but the world didn't have last names in Medieval times either. I would presume that last names have come about as bureaucracy replaces chaos and people needed to be identified. In a time when you would never really ever leave your town or village, last names wouldn't have been needed. I can only guess Tolkien based it on that.
Only Hobbits have last names AFAIK, perhaps why they're the only ones we're told to have a well working postal service ^^
Well, nobody does (except the sneaky little Hobbitses) and Ngugi and Arachîr himself explained it well.
And to add to their statements, the way they could identify each other is by the 'x son of y' phrase. For example, a man from Dol Amroth named Dirluin goes to Minas Tirith and meets a man there with the exact same name.
To identify who is who, they add the 'son of y'. In the case of Sindarin and Quenya, they use the suffix -ion, -iel for the women.
Dirluin of Dol Amroth is the son of Malbor, so that makes him Dirluin Malborion of Dol Amroth. Dirluin of Minas Tirith is the son of Gelmir, so that makes him Dirluin Gelmirion of Minas Tirith.
It all makes sense now.

It has been suggested yeah as the undying lands tend to give immortality to those who land there.

+Minastir1 I agree it is believable but from a pain of loss angle. You watch your family and friends wither and die of old age and yet, you know that just over the sea there is a land of immortality. It would call to a humans very soul. That instinct to keep people alive, and of course yourself, is very strong in humans. It is strong in humans in our world so add in some creatures who actually have immortality and it is inevitable that we would seek it out.
I would not like to live forever. I know once my life is complete that I will pass on as others have before me. That is the legacy that I will leave to my children. When my journey is complete that I can rest in which no one can deny me.
Joker, you only say that because we get old and tired. And have to work for a living and if lucky can retire and live of a limited retirement.
If you were an oligarch elite with loads of money, you'd be singing a different song. You could have your rest no one can deny you any time. You're immortal, so you get tired, take a few century or longer nap. Wake up and check it out, still a bit bushed, take another nap.
It's the restraints of reality that make us yearn for death: old age, requirement of work for someone else for 99% of us on the planet, mental problems like chemical imbalances, illness, injuries, etc. Take reality away, all those things, and you sing a different tune indeed.
