JTB1020 I agree. But I’ve been looking for lore on angband. I can’t complain though these videos are really good. And in depth which is what I’ve been looking for.
Man, you have no idea how excited I get when I see a new lore video posted. Thank you for sticking with it. These truly are the highlight of my (insert varied period of waiting here). Keep it up!
By far far the best lore of Middle-earth stuff on you tube if Tolkien himself hasnt done any yet and I dont think he has so... Cheers Arachir very good stuff man!
What a great video, I honestly love just sitting down and listening to these videos while doing hw or cleaning. Great content! Utulie'n aure! Aiya Eldalie ar Atanatari, utulie'n aure! 'Auta i lome!
Yeay a new lore video ! I must admit that I watch your channel only for those because I love the way you make me travel through middle earth every time. Thanks for all this amazing work
Can you please please please bring back the other lore vids? I learned so so much about the lore through your video’s! And watch them over and over. Sharing them and discussing them with friends. We really miss them and love your delivery/presentation!!! Thank you for all your sharing and knowledge of the lore!
Wonderful and in depth overview of Gondolin, Galu. I can tell how much you love the lore of J R R Tolkien (and it reflects my own). This video has made me want to read the Silmarillion again. P.S. I've just realised that this was posted on my 20th Birthday.
So great to see you doing new lore videos. Please keep up the good work I listen to your video's just before I go to bed, you have a very friendly relaxing voice!
Thank you for this video as I now understand what the story of Gondolin is all about as I just couldn't fit who all the various players were or what they had to do with the story but this has put the pieces into the puzzle beautifully & now the story that I listened to a couple of days ago finally makes sense.
I find the fact that the Morgoth had such a hard time finding Gondolin a bit weird, I feel like he could have just looked at wherever his Orcs were disappearing the most to at least eliminate a fair few areas in his search.
It was only one spot in the entire of middle earth. So its definitely possible to hide. Plus any of his spies were constantly shot by the elves there or taken by the eagles who protect it so any info never really got back. Plus, men like Turin, the sindar, king thingol did not where it was even and lived in a different area. When he finally caught maeglin...thats all it took.
Ecthelion is the greatest living warrior of the noldor. Maybe Fingolfin was better, but he's dead now. Glorfindel then being second best leaves Gondolin with the two greatest warriors in Beleriand yet they still get rekt. And to think that Tolkien kept Glorfindel out of the fellowship because he would have made it too easy. Really puts it into proportion just how powerful Morgoth was.
Though, interestingly: "Sauron was 'greater', effectively, in the Second Age than Morgoth at the end of the First. Why? Because, though he was far smaller by natural stature, he had not yet fallen so low. Eventually he also squandered his power (of being) in the endeavour to gain control of others. But he was not obliged to expend so much of himself. To gain domination over Arda, Morgoth had let most of his being pass into the physical constituents of the Earth - hence all things that were born on Earth and lived on and by it, beasts or plants or incarnate spirits, were liable to be 'stained'. Morgoth at the time of the War of the Jewels had become permanently 'incarnate': for this reason he was afraid, and waged the war almost entirely by means of devices, or of subordinates and dominated creatures. Sauron, however, inherited the 'corruption' of Arda, and only spent his (much more limited) power on the Rings..." HoME 10, Morgoth's Ring
This is the only podcast I can find going into such detail about the lore of middle earth. Obviously there are the books of the history of middle earth, but there is room for a good podcast discussing the deep history of middle earth from different viewpoints. This podcast is good, and I hope it continues, but the power that this mythology has could be honored with a dedicated series of discussions prompting perhaps other discussions. There are few things that are as powerful as Tolkien's creation. It seems so great that I am inclined to think of it as channeled rather than created. It is on a par with the mythology of Kind Arthur and the Holy Grail. These myths had such power that they were channeled through many people and took on a life of their own, being powered by the unconscious of man. There is a great deal of material available discussing the myth and lore of King Arthur, and I think Tolkiens material should receive equal attention. All the same, Arachir Galudirithon, you deserve much praise for the effort you have put into this podcast. I am in no way denigrating your efforts or this podcast which I am very fond of, just pointing out that there is room for an even greater work?
Love your lore videos, i'm so happy each time ther's a new one, i've watched each multiple times, you're a blessing for the lotr community, keep it up!
You're right that Elves rarely separate from a pair-bonding from loss of love. Though AFAIK, Aredhel had kind of a grudging love for Eol brought on by circumstances; it wasn't exactly the kind of voluntary love that makes for connections that last beyond death. I do seem to recall that Fëanor's wife, Nerdanel, effectively divorced him (or at least became estranged) as a result of his many, MANY problems, especially after the Silmarils were made.
You are amazing dude thank you so much for these. I have at least 100 of the views on each of your vids. Please keep it up but of course take as much time as you need. Much love from Missouri.
About time that someone who knows Tolkien thru and thru!!! Your dedication to the world s of J.R.R.Tolkien is very deep indeed!!! And I thought I was crazy!!! LOL,You,"mellon" are amazing! Mae Govannon indeed!!! Love the stuff you are doing.I have a kindred soul in England!!! Thank you for your time. I found the book "Unfinished Tales" some of my favorite stuff! The Tale of Tuor`s journey to the hidden gates of Gondolin ,aided by the estranged elf Voronwe! One of the best tales (in my opinion) of all of Tolkien`s. It`s sudden end at the fountain, meeting Turgon leaves me reeling for more!!!!!!!!!
39:30 That passage always makes me a tad emotional. And (sinking back into geekery) I'm suddenly reminded of all the multitude of tributes in pop-culture to the theme of a paradise of Elves (Elf-like races) being destroyed. Blizzard especially loves this: Aiur discovered by the Zerg in Starcraft & Quel'Thalas ravaged by the Undead in Warcraft.
These are absolutely fantastic. I hope you are enjoying your well-earned retirement. Hope to see you again one day on this platform, however, unlely that may be
It is good to hear you say head of the modding team, don't know why, I guess nostalgic :) I enjoyed your Sauron video and returned back to the old lore videos because I am to lazy to read the books myself (I think I don't have the brain for it it's very dry material to read, I tried). But very much enjoy your videos on the subject. (I have read the hobbit and the lord of the rings trilogy but couldn't get through the simirilion...I cannot even spell it).
Isn't it depressing that "good" despite its heroics manages to muddle from defeat to defeat surviving often due to divine intervention or simple dumb luck like the slip and fall of the ring.
Sure, the Great Eagles are self-aware and have their own (albeit primitive) agendas, but they are first and foremost the chief servants of Manwe in Arda and answer to him alone. Anything a Great Eagle does that is strategically significant is essentially by the will of Manwe... divine intervention if you will... a manifestation of Tolkien's "eucatastrophe". Manwe couldn't openly help the Elves, he had the Ban to enforce after all, but I think Manwe, just like Ulmo, is secretly subverting the Valar's excommunication of the Noldor because of their abiding love for them. And more than just pity, I think they both had an inkling of the future, that if the Elves could survive just long enough they could be saved by the Valar.
I'm still wondering how it works jay Eöl's armor can resist the strongest of arrows, yet some simple cave spikes kill him? Haha. And also; poor Ecthelion. He kills the most powerful Balrog yet the Valar just think; NAAAAH. Glorfindel, however, gets revived after dying to a lower Balrog.
Middle Earth Rock Music? Now I'm picturing Frodo & Friends in Uncle Bilbo's garage rockin' out and callilng themselves the "Green Dragons". (In some shots of the Party in the film, you do see Pippin playing some sort of rustic mandolin.)
Your lore vids are one of my favorite series on UA-cam, they offer an in depth and insightful view of tolkien's world. They always make me happy to listen to, keep up the great work dude. Edit: also do you think you'll be playing shadow of war? Even if not on the channel, just curious.
"...from you and from me a new star shall arise." /Huor. His and Turgo's grandson is Eärendil, father of the numenorians and keeper of the Silmaril of the sky. He literary raises a new star, brighter than all else.
Damn right,KING Turgon. Will we get the story of Nirnaeth Arnoediad?(and all the battles of the 1st age, yes?! ) The coming of Turgon with his 10.000 was one of the most epic moments of my childhood
This guy is the best of the best on Professor Tolkien podcasts.
It's a high bar too.
Many thanks for sharing this excellent research.
Gondolin. One of my personal favorite Kingdoms of Old.
JTB1020 FTW Same man :)
Agreed. But its also the way Arachir relates it that makes it even better
JTB1020 I agree. But I’ve been looking for lore on angband. I can’t complain though these videos are really good. And in depth which is what I’ve been looking for.
I'm so excited! It is past midnight for me but I will stay awake for this. Thank you for the upload, I really enjoy your videos!
I've been waiting for a video about Gondolin for so long, You're the best!!!
I'm so happy the lore series is back, it's how i found your channel Galu, and you do the best lore videos on UA-cam.
Man, you have no idea how excited I get when I see a new lore video posted. Thank you for sticking with it. These truly are the highlight of my (insert varied period of waiting here). Keep it up!
Maeglin: "We're going to build an impenetrable, powerful, physical, tall wall, and the Orcs are going to pay for it"
*clap* *clap*
Hahaha
Turgon actually built the walls, but Maeglin let illegal orc immigrants into the city. For the cheap labor.
@@wvhoipolloi7035 love it! Even a year later.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for sweetening my illness with this video friend.
Also, nearly 6000 views but only 430 likes for this?
Please guys, show your support
Anybody else wish there was a Silmarillion: Total War mod out there after watching these lore vids?
Yes. there is one out there for Med 2, but i couldn't get it working
Durin The Deathless PCP or whatever. It's just not as professional as DaC or base TA.
There is one currently in the works called War of the Silmarils. It isn't finished yet but it looks very promising.
john daniel Quite. Doriath looks amazing.
Which time do you want?
You sir, are the finest, most engaging Tolkien Loremaster on UA-cam.
Must agree with that!
Great video. Brings back more than ten years old memories when I was delved in Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.
Very Professional Begining
Ramster44 I agree lol
This man does it the best! I have watched every similar Chanel, but this man is the best, he was a gem
Gondolin is my favorite! House of the Golden Flower forever!
By far far the best lore of Middle-earth stuff on you tube if Tolkien himself hasnt done any yet and I dont think he has so...
Cheers Arachir very good stuff man!
These lore videos are what keep me going through the year.
I'v been waiting an eternity for these series to return. I love these lore videos!
Just want to say thanks for all your effort on these. From Sydney Australia.
I have been waiting so long for a new video, Love these! Keep up the good work I need more to listen to at work XD
Yayy, I love these lore videos, make more man, they're epic!
Fingolfin would have destroyed gothmog, he was able to hold his own against Melkor!!!
What a great video, I honestly love just sitting down and listening to these videos while doing hw or cleaning. Great content!
Utulie'n aure! Aiya Eldalie ar Atanatari, utulie'n aure! 'Auta i lome!
Thank you for another stellar video! Others may not like these, but I am a huge fan of all the backstory. Looking forward to the next one!
Happy to see a new lore video out and thankyou, I knew some of the story of Gondolin but this put's it in better context.
Yeay a new lore video ! I must admit that I watch your channel only for those because I love the way you make me travel through middle earth every time. Thanks for all this amazing work

Haha, that start of the video was funny, anyway good lore video I really liked it and can't wait for part 2.
Uploaded the wrong bloody one didn't I. :) Hahaha. In about 3 hours UA-cam editor will rectify this problem.
So glad to see another video from you! Feels like its been so long since the last one. Keep up the great work!
Wonderful and in depth overview of Gondolin, Galu. I can tell how much you love the lore of J R R Tolkien (and it reflects my own). This video has made me want to read the Silmarillion again.

Thanks for all the great work
Great Video as always. I really liked the Depictions you used, the last one is probably my favourite Picture of Gondolin.
Best thing about his videos is his passion an interest in the lore. love your videos. The only lore vids worth watching on UA-cam
Thank you for this video as I now understand what the story of Gondolin is all about as I just couldn't fit who all the various players were or what they had to do with the story but this has put the pieces into the puzzle beautifully & now the story that I listened to a couple of days ago finally makes sense.

It is a weak point in the narrative
Morhoth is kind of a deranged and stupid peace of crap. Otherwise he wouldn't have lost.
No its called magic duh
It was only one spot in the entire of middle earth. So its definitely possible to hide. john smith can you imagine the fall of boromir with glorfindel there? He'd have eaten those uruks for breakfast
Lewis Standing ikr he would have demolished them all without a break of a sweet
And in comparison, how much weaker than Morgoth Sauron was.
Though, interestingly:
"Sauron was 'greater', effectively, in the Second Age than Morgoth at the end of the First. Why? Because, though he was far smaller by natural stature, he had not yet fallen so low. HoME 10, Morgoth's Ring
I misphrased my, well, phrase. I meant to show the disparity between the armies of Morgoth and Suaron, not between the characters themselves.
Really well-done and entertaining video Galu, thoroughly enjoyed it!
This is an absolutely terrific video, love the lore and the way you present it!!! Look forward to more, Cheers
I'm so glad I found these lore videos. Thank you!
Thank you so much, for me who is roleplaying a gondolinian elf this is the best source I have found online ❤️💕

Actually Lindon/the grey haves are in what remains of beleriand.
Epic video thank you for all the lore series keeps my mind occupied during dark times.

Gotta love your Lore of Middle-earth series. Great stuff, even if you’re extremely familiar with the material.
glad you explained the gates and the structure of the city cause that has been bugging me for many years trying to figure it out after I read it
Your Lore videos are awesome. I love all of them.
You are amazing dude thank you so much for these. I have at least 100 of the views on each of your vids. Please keep it up but of course take as much time as you need. Much love from Missouri.

That elf who threw the javelin in Gondolin though...when I was reading it I couldn't help but imagine a Jeremy Kyle show situation playing out.
That was awesome. Can't wait for part 2 :)
Always love your uploads.
The House of the Mole, how ironic

Love these watched all your lore videos, so interesting.
Thank you for making these!
oh my god another lore video, thank you arachir!
Yet again, another great video, KEEP IT UP !!!
Gondolin, and the First Age is my favorite time period. I do quite enjoy Arnor...but yeah
Isn't it depressing that "good" despite its heroics manages to muddle from defeat to defeat surviving often due to divine intervention or simple dumb luck like the slip and fall of the ring.
So wonderful and insightful!
very thrilled to see more lore!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.
No amount of exclamation can express my glee.
Great to have another lore video!!
I know ow you're retired but I love the lore videos and miss them!

christopher tolkien said that canonically gilgalad is the son of orodreth. As he believed that was JRR Tolkien’s last and final thoughts on the matter
Wonderful work as always.

When will you release a video about the Battle of unnumbered tears?
Thank you for these Lore videos! They're great. Could you do a video on the Battle of Unnumbered Tears?
You're back !
Another fantastic video!
Absolutely brilliant, wow
Middle Earth Rock Music? Now I'm picturing Frodo & Friends in Uncle Bilbo's garage rockin' out and callilng themselves the "Green Dragons". (In some shots of the Party in the film, you do see Pippin playing some sort of rustic mandolin.)
Well done. Wonderful insight and knowledge of Middle-Earth Lore. "The Fall of Gondolin" is one of my all-time favorite Lost Tales.
Your lore vids are one of my favorite series on UA-cam, they offer an in depth and insightful view of tolkien's world. They always make me happy to listen to, keep up the great work dude.
Edit: also do you think you'll be playing shadow of war? Even if not on the channel, just curious.
Will you ever do more of these? Absolutely love your series. Would like to see one for Fingolfin. I feel like he’s such an underrated character.
the first 7 mins it sounds like you were under the same pressure of that hacker with the deadline in swordfish...

Thank you! Enjoyed much.
good job. a little rocky at times, but you managed to pull through.
How cool would it be whit a "Beleriand mod" for mtw that would have been awesome :D
Anyway I can support this series specifically?
He has a Patreon, if that is what you mean.
I used to call ecthelion, eck the lion.a much better way to pronounce his name.lol.
someone needs to make beleriand mod for a first age game
Thanks for these
Damn right,KING Turgon.
Will we get the story of Nirnaeth Arnoediad?(and all the battles of the 1st age, yes?! )
The coming of Turgon with his 10.000 was one of the most epic moments of my childhood
