Lore of Middle-earth: Battles of the Third Age, Part 1

- Once more unto the lore! Today I talk of the biggest and best of the battles throughout the Third Age of Middle-earth.
None of the images in this video were created by me, all credit for their artistic creation goes to the individual creators. Should you have any qualms with my using of your artwork do not hesitate to contact me.
"So they come to the Haradrim and they say... well they can say whatever they like. But essentially it comes down to: We both hate Gondor, let's attack at the same time so we can actually beat the buggers."
Brilliant display of British deadpan.
"because in every other battle the king or the steward always dies" .... especially in Galu's let's plays! :D
I'd also like to add:- It is speculated by in-universe historians that the hill which upon Ondoher, Artamir, and the King's Guards were obliterated is the exact same hill which Aragorn and his part of the Host of the West stood upon, but slag-mounds have been piled on the hill in the last millennia.
- The host of Gondor that sailed into the North was described, through the eyes of the Northern Dúnedain and the Elves, was a truly massive host for great wars in the South. But for Eärnil, it was just a small task-force.
- The southern Wainriders were at war with the Men of Khand and the Harad, which was another reason why Gondor was at peace for four decades. In fact, it is speculated that Sauron, or one of his agents, convinced both sides to set aside their wars and attack Gondor.
- Cirion and the men of Gondor knew of the threat of the Balchoth, who are said to be no doubt akin to the Wainriders, for many years before. Cirion manned the forts along the Anduin with any company he could spare, and sent many spies into the wide lands of Rhovanion, monitoring the Balchoth's advance. He sends word to the Éothéod before the Wainriders cross into Gondor.
i just wanted to offer praise and encouragment. Great video Arachir, i thoroughly enjoy the lore series. Glad i subscribed, if i personally compare total content of your channel to many big channels in the same market, i am impressed. Plus it's a niche for mod-hype that you've mastered of course. GG sir.
Glad to have you on-board. :) Thank you for the kind words.
Good video, mate (Eärnil for the win, of course) :) A few notes of mine;
- Amdir and his Lórien Elves were those who were driven into the [Dead] Marshes, because they acted independently.
Oropher died when when he led the eastern Silvans in the first assult into Mordor, before Gil-galad had ordered an advance.
When Sauron sallied forth, it was a desperate act, and the peril was mostly that he might escape (to continue the war from elsewhere; resonably it was a forceful sally still, no objection in that regard).
- The Wainriders in battle are always [in UT] described using "war-chariots", so it's possibly so that had wains for common use (as arguably their kin the Balchoth did), but used proper chariots for actual battle.
- Arvedui was not in the battle of Fornost, he was at, or had already drowned in, the Ice-bay of Forochel.
- Lastly, the >Dunedain< of the South will not fancy to be included and called Rangers or be excluded and not counted a Dunedain, haha ;)
What abou battle of dale, that was also very important battle too.Btw i love your videos and keep up good work
Did you notice that he also says what battles will be in next video..!!
Yea, I deleted my comment after I reached that point. You have my apologies
You answered yourself man...
+DominusOfficial no i didnt some guy deleted his comment
I adore listening to these lore-videos in the background whilst playing third age TW (with dac of course ;) and then tracing/finding the locations of the battles on the campaign map itself. Thank you very much for taking your time to make these videos, they make playing my Rohan campaign twice as fun!
(yeahyeahi know galu and the whole world dislike rohan, but i'm keeping saruman under house arrest in isengard which makes it better...i think)
The fact that the Dwarves were the only faction in the last alliance not to loose their leader really shows their military power and cunning.
I have to say these are amazingly high quality videos. I will be listening to all of them on my drives. You just seem to know more than any wiki it's incredible
Over the last few days I have devoured all of your Lore of Middle-earth videos, and I just have to say, it's been a great journey! My knowledge had been mostly confined to the movies, but I have read the Fellowship of the Ring, and this series has rekindled my drive to read the rest of Tolkien's works. Also, I appreciate the time and thoroughness you've given to these videos, you're a huge nerd, and the best kind. Novaer and rock on!
I love your video's mate, they are really easy to listen to and you are factually correct (except for the odd mistake or oversight but that can be forgiven with the depth and dearth of matrerial into the cultures and history of Middle Earth and its peoples and origins). Keep them coming, great work :-)
I really enjoy learning all that i craved to know. Since i only got a lotr fellowship - book i didnt got to read any much of else.
Learning so much about creation to the third age did shed so much light so i wanna thank you.
After seeind so many vids Iam subscribing to you now cause you trully have earned it.
Keep your amazinh job up
:)
with kind regards

Arachir love the lore videos, hope they will be much more of them. I was wandering will you ever make more custom settlements like Fornost and Annuminas. Big fan, keep the good work.
The DaC team does not have any experience with the IWTE tool used to create custom settlements. I don't think there is anyone left on the TATW forums who really knows how to full create a new settlement.
I have watched all your vids on LOTR, and just want to say thankyou for making them!
These are GREAT! You mentioned doing Second and First age as well. Would definitely listen!
I like the Gondorian on the right at 8:15: "I'm simply too cool get involved here, hmm, what's going on over there?" :D
Is the Easterlings and the Haradrim’s hatred and combativeness toward Gondor really irrational? After Gondor Triumphs they fall under Gondor’s rule and domination which is probably against their interest.
Brother your channel is a true gem .you are a great guy overall and i hope when the real lotr total war comes
They will hire cause of your knowledge . my apologies for my broken english.
Have you ever done a video of what happened to Moria when Balin took it back, and how the Balrog appeared
+Ciaran McGuinness The Dwarves video covers it I believe.
Ah right thanks
I enjoy your lore videos and thank you for putting them up. A little feedback though, your background music can be quite loud and distracting. Especially around the 20-23 minute mark in this video.
Very cool video. You will do a video on the sieges? Like the ones in Dol Guldur, Minas Morgul and Caras Galadhon?
Arachîr Galudirthon I just love your lore videos, keep op your awesome work
The mod was for Attila i think not Rome 2 also Galadriel helped the Eotheod cross the river a Fog surrounded Eorl and his army and they crossed it.
You are right, at least on ModDB I see it for Attila :D
Leri Weill I think it is for attila LOL
Same difference.
its for attila :p
+Ryusuke Sosuke What do you mean by ,"Same difference " ??
Battle of the Gladden Fields? Pretty important as it results in the loss of almost all Arnor's adult Dunedain warriors, the death of Isuldur and the loss of the One Ring.
love your content, you should do a lore video about beornings.
Dear Mr. Galudirithon,My name is Teddy Holthaus and I am 14. I quite enjoy you videos. I discovered you when I searched LotR Lore, and your video on Arnor came up. I have watched all of your lot videos and many of your DAC videos (though I do not play the game). I am wondering how I can get DAC. I would also like to give a possible topic for the lore videos: the weapons (specific and not) in Arda and how accurate they are inthe movies, games, and so on. Again I am thankful for your videos for they have given me hours of entertainment as well as doubled my knowledge so I can more extensively crush anyone I know about Tolkien, Arda, and Middle Earth.
Sincerely,Heronnedgul (Teddy) Holthaus
P.S. I live in a small town in Iowa, do you k ow of any outlets on the internet to extended my knowledge and speak with other Tolkien Fans? Thank you once again.
great idea, about the weapons
Hi Teddy, if you have not found out already I reply here;
To play DaC you need to have *Medeival 2 Total War* and your must have the *Kingdoms-expansion* (they are often sold together as "Golden Edition") or it won't work
.
Then get the mod Third Age: Total War, as you can find through here: www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?500418-Third-Age-Total-War-3-2-Released
Install version 3.0 part 1 and part 2 and then patch 3.2
We modders, including Galudirithon himself, recommend that you play TATW a little first, so you learn how the game works, before adding a submod (such as DaC). But when you feel ready, you find DaC here:
www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?736995-Divide-and-Conquer-Version-1-Coming-Soon!
As for good pages to read up on Tolkien, see the links in the OP in this thread. And while I can't recommend any other sites to discuss Tolkien, that thread is for just that in case you sign up:
www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?581730-Tolkien-General-Discussion-II
regards
Thank you very much!
Totally appreciate your in-depth knowledge of the entire legedarium...one question tho- if Sauron loses the ability to take form when Huan mauls his ass how is it that Gil-Galad & Elendil fight him in the last alliance and to have a finger to cut off you would think that....? See what I'm saying?
Great vid,keep 'em comin,Galudirithon ! :)
Awesome channel I love your videos!
Great video please make more! enlighten me !
hey arachir could you maybe do a lore video on the dwarves of the iron hills?
A great Lore-Master you'd make in Middle-Earth. :}
How did you learn so much lore? ^^ Simply by the books? I mean I only read the trilogy some odd 10 years ago and I don't know near as much as you do. I guess Silmarillon and the other "side" books gives a ton of information and backstory huh?
Toby Gunn, the Silmarillion is not a' "side" book!!! :)
Great video! Love the lore!
The video was great but if nothing Else finally knowing how to pronounce the wild names in Lord of the rings is well worth it
What are those mountains and such to the east of Rhun? I've seen this map more than once but never with enough definition to read what's over there.
Can you make a video about the fourth age? Thx!
great vids bro...salute
Bro your very knowledgeable I like it
But the black gate wasn't constructed until the third age was it? It was an add-on on the watch towers that Gondor had constructed there? So the last alliance could simply walk into Mordor (yes yes -.-) after the battle of Dagorlad?
It was constructed during the 2nd Age, we can deduce, while JRR never wrote when it was constructed (not an uncommon lack of detail, hehe). ^^
On one hand the Morannon (the gate) is likely refered to in the Silmarillion, about the Last Alliance. From 'chapter' Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age:
"From Imladris [Gil-galad and Elendil] crossed the Misty Mountains by many passes and marched down the River Anduin, and so came at last upon the host of Sauron on Dagorlad, the Battle Plain, which lies before the gate of the Black Land."
This may be read as a description from later days, of course, se we shall not rely on it alone - even if someone can base the argument on it alone and at least not be claimed to error (since we have no example, AFAIK, of it being built in the Third Age).
Second proof, we know Sauron had built it. From The Two Towers, chapter "The Black Gate is Closed":
"Across the mouth of the pass, from cliff to cliff, the Dark Lord had built a rampart of stone. In it there was a single gate of iron, and upon its battlement sentinels paced unceasingly"
But the Gate is refered to already in 1944 of the Third Age, a 1000 years before Sauron returned to Mordor, and about a century before even the Nazgul came there. From Unfinished Tales, chapter The Northmen and the Wainriders:
"...the army of Gondor had been moving more slowly than it would if Ondoher had received earlier warning, and its vanguard had not yet reached the Gates of Mordor. ... So it came to pass that the head of the army of Gondor had only drawn level with the Gates of Mordor (the Morannon) when a great dust borne on a wind from the East announced the oncoming of the enemy vanguard."
In that light the Towers of Teeth were add ons to the Morannon, and not the other way around.
Plz tell us about the battle of dale and erebor in the time of the war of the ring
love your videos man however there is one minor discrepancy, in shadow of mordor which ive played religiously I struggled to understand what age it took place in due to innumerable inconsistencies with both the second and third ages history thus eliminating the possibility of that. but after several cumulative hours of perusing the lore of that game it would seem that it takes place well after the third age. supporting this is that its made out that udun is completely controlled by gondor and neither sauron or the ring are seen or mentioned in the game at all.
what? you missed a lot. Tallion is a guard of Mordor after the Seige of Barad Dur. the wraith is Celebrimbor, and he steals the ring from Sauron in the DLC, which is in the past of the game, before the 3rd age. the entire game is non-canon fanfiction
the ring is seen in the Celebrimbor DLC as well as (Spoiler) Sauron as the last boss
ah I see thanks
I love these lore videos!
Well thank you very much. :)
i love all ur videos and im only saying this incase someone wants too play it the rise of mordor mod is a mod for total war attila , no offense galu just trying 2 help
Great video Mr. Galudirithon, even tho all of your videos are great!
Great video! Does anybody know where the music at 19:15 comes from?
Adrian von Ziegler - Where I belong (If you're still looking for it haha!)
yeah ty galu and part 1,awesome!
I wasn't this early since last alliance.
so why were the forces of good able to defeat Sauron with his one ring in the battle of the last Alliance.? Because later we find that if he has is wondering no one could defeat him. is there a video that addresses this?
Will You be doing anymore videos?
3:51 it was Durin the 4th wasn't it?
will u do battl on crossing od river isen?
or u gona talk abouth it together whit battle for helms deep
Didn't the Third Age begin with the end of the War of the Last Alliance? Gil Galad was the greatest elf in the Second age, right?
Sort of; the Second Age ended with the War of the Last Alliance. When Sauron was defeated the war ended and the Third Age began.
Depends on how to measure greatness. According to Tolkien the greatest Noldor was Galadriel, who was the wisest and likely most capable in wielding magic. Glorfindel was most powerful, but possibly only as a warrior. Gil-galad was most influencal as he was the High king whom the others obeyed, he led the armies, and he was mighty enough to fight Sauron and defeat the Dark Lord (be it at the cost of his own life).
Because the Last Alliance of Elves and Men ....and Dwarves, just doesn't sound as good. Because no Dwarves now remember. Asshole elves. Having the arrogant elves charge ahead and get Woodland and Lorien kings and armies trashed was pretty foolish too. Would have been nice to have seen Gil-Galad and Elendil actually battle Sauron, tho the change to a desperate move by Isildur was cool too. But then again, it's like dude it was just a finger pick the ring back up (if he wasn't totally beaten down by the previous battle with the Kings).
Also if anything in the movie it was the strength of Elrond (elves) that failed. He could have cut down Isildur or at least clubbed his ass and taken the ring and dropped it immediately. Feel like the 20 seconds it would take him would keep that Sauron corruption at bay.
That's right Sauron was killed by both Gil-galad and Elendil who were also slain by Sauron. Isildur merely took the One Ring from the dead Sauron and was not the one who killed him.
what is the most epic battle in the Middle Earth Saga (in your opinion)?
The big one with the swords and orcses and gullem
I liked this video just by reading the title
Love the music
Great video :)
Absolutly love it
From what I remember reading Anorien stayed in Gondor as Regent for Ellendil and Isildur and never went to the battle of the Last Alliance. How could he die there?
Anorien? That is a region.
sorry Anarion (I think thats how its spelled) Isildur's brother
Lord Kierstead Station joined them but IDK what's the reason but maybe to resupply the army of Elendil it was said that Anarion's heirs ruled Gondor
Yea! Get the lore-oin fix for this week!
Thank you
i love this video
+ Arachir Galudirithon Yes my lord, tis me again, with an update (you are probably aware of this anyway) but You are the man,LOL so... Tolkien, having set Fingon as the father of Gil-galad in the Silmarillion, Christopher upon writing his fathers works(arranging and publishing the series of the great volumes of books that are the "Histories of Middle Earth" from older writings that JJ.R.R. had constantly re-arranged and altered certain things) So the latest of the lineage of Gil-galad name Orodreth as Gil-galad`s Father. I still dont know how to find the "Fall of Gondolin" in full. When time permits dear sir, please text me back ,if you could name the particular lay that you have so very beautifully told in video 1 and 2 of the "Fall.....". Fingolfin, and Glorfindel happen to be my most beloved characters of all ,in Tolkien`s writings. Gandalf does not count!! That would be cheating!!! LOL May the west wind be at your back ,and the sun in your face , with a well sharpened blade at your hip!
perhaps Peter Jackson aught to do a flick/s based on the Last Alliance story
it isn't galadriel the highest elf in second age, being daughter of finarfin? just for courisity
I think it is in terms of deeds more than bloodline but I may be wrong. I think Gil-Galad just did more to earn the position plus he was high king.
Gil-Galad is High King of the Noldor through being the son of Oredreth, the last King of Nargothrond. You can read a little more here - middle-earth.xenite.org/2011/12/26/how-many-kings-of-the-noldor-were-there/ - I'm pretty sure Michael Martinez has written more about Galadriel and her position as a potential leader of the High Elves but I can't find the specific article at present. He does cover a lot of the lore of Middle Earth on his site and if that is something you find interesting, as I do, you'll find plenty to read and ponder on.
The Glory of Gondor Was restored from it's decline while Gondor rose back up it's enemies Mordor Rhun and Harad all failed FOR GONDOR
Mehmed Sabriev FUCK YOU
The Hunnic Empire Ye no thanks :D
the morannon still did not exist by the time of the last alliance, therefore the gorgoroth was wide open
what if, Tolkien off between Arachir Galudirithon and Steven Colbert
I think there called wind riders
Sauron wasn't beaten by ellendil or gilgalad, he killed both of them but was beaten when isildur managed to cut the ring off using the remains of narsil
+Jake Alter That is what the movie taught you but that is not correct. Isildur finally managed to best Sauron in combat and he cut the ring from his finger after Sauron had fallen.
Arachîr Galudirithon that's slightly different from the movie but the end result is the same, isildur still beat sauron
+Jake Alter Well the prevailing opinion in the circles is that Sauron killed gil-galad almost immediately but in his haste he didn't prepare for Elendils fury and Elendil struck a fatal blow BUT he killed himself as well and fell on his own sword thus breaking it. Isildur then simply cuts the ring from the finger.
Arachîr Galudirithon more like sauron's physical body was killed since he is a Maia
Arachîr Galudirithon is rather face sauron than morgoth, that's for sure since morgoth is even more powerful
Right the battle of 5 armies
If the Gondorian army was so dominant during the Third Age, then why was it defeated so many times?
Because of vast fronts and numerical disadvantage, in summary.
The first millenia of the Third Age Gondor expanded, but for the last 2000 years prior to LotR Gondor faced over-expansion, civil war, plauge, dwindling population, losses of allies, and all that while facing, sometimes technologically equal enemies but always, numerically superior enemies.
One must remember, that while Gondor lost a handful of large battles during the Age, they usually technically won the wars (be it just to secure their current borders), and that they survived throughout the Age at all is a certificate of their strength and endurance.
Ngugi TWC Cool, thanks for the info!
Glad to :)
nice channel, i subscribed ...but why am i getting harassed by mormon popups all the sudden?
Hahahaha! Not a clue! If they are ads then I assume Google is dealing with the whole ad situation at the moment by letting some of the lesser ads onto vids as they have no choice. I think Coke pay more for ad time than the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. :P
Where is the battle of the Gladden Fields?
Maybe in the next video?
I've listened to all of these they are appreciated
Well that is an uncharacteristically nice comment sir: given your internet designation.
Fabulous. Major fanboying by an old man.
anybody know what he's saying in the first 5 seconds of every video?
Well met my friends.
10/10
Arvedui was married to Onoder's daughter.
Why hasn't anybody made a last alliance historical battle in tatw
They have
look up pixelated appolos video (don't look at the comments though it's all dwarves shouldn't be here)
HOW DARE YOU MAKE 34MINUTE OF QUALITY CONTENT WITHOUT ANY ADS....
Your videos all rule dude
".....BUT!....."
I knew tat gondor waz from arnor 😊
👌🏽👌🏽😊
hey tats arnor
I love lord of rings

no body of literature has ever been so undeniably brilliant and so undeniably racist af lol
+Alejandro 21 How is lotr racist?
All the peoples of Rhun and Harad, the regions that are analogous to and in the future become Asia and Africa respectively, are easily corrupted by the forces of evil, have all the negative traits of mankind but are never once mentioned doing anything noble, are almost never named or given much attention & detail at all and since the gods of the men of gondor and the elves and dwarves are real, one could infer that the gods or whatever religious or philosophical beliefs held by the easterlings and the haradrim are false or that they simply worship sauron. its a logic that sees western european people as more human than any person from anywhere else in the world, having more complexity and depth as individual characters and as a people and a civilization.
I still love Tolkien's works, and they have a lot to offer. But lets be honest. Tolkien was a man influenced by his national pride in the british empire, his catholicism, his upbringing in general naturally leads to a certain worldview and a politics that comes through in his books. george rr martin (who despite being more nuanced and materialist does more or less the same thing) has pointed out that kings in middle earth who are noble rule for hundreds of years with nothing happening as if political stability is based on a leader's strength of character or "nobility of birth" and not the actual economic function of feudal production. (feudalism, which tolkien fetishizes, contrasted against his disdain for industrial production) so outside of the obvious racial aspect, tolkien is evidently anti materialist and believes feudal society with a strong ruler to be ideal. peasants, are to my knowledge never given any attention despite the fact that they are the basis for this entire society to even function.
Tolkiens characters also have their own violent beliefs about purity of blood, rulers that are mixed with "lesser people's" are deposed and wars are fought to maintain a pure bloodline. Tolkien was also a linguist and like lots of linguists, was obsessed with the indo european language group, sanskrit and all that jazz. you can see it in the languages he creates. and most people in the 20th century who studied that stuff were into aryan racial theory. and it also comes through in his books, that certain races of men of the west are naturally tall, fair, noble, strong and long lived. and therefore had the natural right to rule and needed to be kept from mixing with lesser peoples who would weaken their people. this is 1 to 1 with the nazi's aryan racial theory.
i enjoy your videos, have subscribed, and as i've said love tolkein's books, but you asked how lotr was racist and i thought that deserved a decently detailed and thorough explanation, as far as one is willing to devote time to a youtube comment. still great books imo. as with all fantasy worlds created eurocentrically (lotr and GoT) it would be nice if they weren't copyrighted so one could expand on the goings on in far harad, rhun or in ASOIAF world sothoryos and yi ti. i'd love to read about Alatar and Pallando traveling in the east interning in events in a more passive zen like way, as opposed to Sauroman and Gandalf, while not taking the path of a nature loving hermit like radagast, and thereby freeing many people of rhun from the influence of sauron. but unfortunately their names are copyrighted despite them never being given the time of day. thank you for your time, hope this comes of as non antagonistic because i don't mean any offense. just being honest and realistic about tolkien and the world which he grew up in, the pervasive ideas of the time in the west and how they influence the implicit politics of his books. wish you the best!
Hmmm you see I disagree mostly because Tolkien says, on numerous occasions, that nothing is in his books is intended to be allegorical. Of course we can theorize and we can suggest that certain things had a massive impact on his writing (WW1, The Industrial Revoilution) but without knowing him personally I think you take great leaps in your thinking. I shall say no more however as I do not like to speak on semi-serious matters on UA-cam.
The way I see it, the bad guys had to come from somewhere, they're not supposed to be representative of the people who live there in modern times. Saying that your fantasy world is based on the real world is a little risky, no matter where you put the bad guys *someone* is going to take offence.
Wtf is 28:53 jew star on a gondorian shield ?!
Nah most of Gondorian victories are pure luck
Your intros are entirely too rambling and filled with telling what the video will have in it. Just get to the content.
No. Just skip the intro. I will do as I please and clearly, it is working.
