I'm a huge fan of the Jam, used to rush to buy every single and album as soon as it was released then played it to death. This is a great opening track to Setting Sons when they were at their peak imo. Musically they were such a tight 3 piece perfectly complementing each other. Great to see you appreciating them and the cheeky line he snuck in lol! Cheers.

Chris when Paul Weller sings that lyric, about size, I laughed so hard from your expression!

Thank you!!! You nailed it that it's about a stalker... Weller has the best way with lyrics. The Jame put together such a great run of albums. One of my-time favorite songs from THE JAM is "MAN IN THE CORNERSHOP"... which literally makes me emotional every time I hear it. Weller's magical lyrics again. THANK YOU!

Setting Sons was meant to be a concept album about three boys growing up and then apart as adults but Paul ran out of ideas for songs to fit this theme so faced with a shortfall to complete album had to come with more material while recording the album. This was one of them and it shows how talented a songwriter he is to write something so fast. I think it is a lighthearted take on what is clearly a dark subject (as you both have recognised) and the eponymous “Girl on the Phone” means him no harm. At least that it is how I have always interpreted it!

The "concept" songs that did make the final LP were (probably): "burning sky", "think as thieves", "little boy soldiers" and "wasteland"...

@@l.salisbury1253 Definitely three of those but I don’t think “Little Boy Soldiers” is one because it’s written in the first person singular without referring to anyone else except the government trying to send the singer to war - and his mum of course who will be informed by mail of his death at the front!

Fascinating opening track to the brilliant Setting Sons album. A song about a fanatic. My favorite Jam song was originally a B-Side called The Butterfly 🦋 Collector.

They are simply unbelievable to watch and hear, thinking there should be instruments in the picture but ALL sounds and musical instruments are from their voices 🥰🥰🤗🤗! Talking about weird fans when wearing a Lennon t shirt is a bit ironic. As for the song, I always thought it was more a paranoia thing as opposed to a stalker thing. Maybe not. Great tune though.
