I am 65 yrs old battling high blood sugar and a few other items reporting HIGH on my lab work. I did a 30 day 10K, had my labs done again and all markers were not only within range but lower than average!! My triglycerides, LDL, and total Cholesterol were all good! I did not stop at 30 days and plan to never stop walking 10K but living in FL with back to back Hurricanes I have missed a few days :( There are so many more improvements that dont show up on bloodwork, emotions, depression, and just an overall feeling of being well is worth everything to me!

I recently read sitting at a desk is the new smoking. I discovered I can just walk around the house or around my dining room table and get all my steps in. I started over a month ago. The change in how I feel is amazing. I plan to keep it up the rest of my life. No excuses. Walk in your house.
Hey there fellow house walker! I also had this epiphany recently. I've only been walking to a goal number of steps for about a week and haven't missed a single day Already losing weight and decreased appetite. One day my social anxiety was keeping me from walking to the store or at a nearby park because it was too busy and it hit me I could just get my steps in inside! I obviously still need to tackle the anxiety but I can work on them separately in the meantime plus walking helps mental health.
@@charcoalanderson8010 That's how I started. Monday will mark six months of walking at least 10K steps every day. I won't let myself miss any days. I read about one man who has been doing it for six years straight. I feel if I let myself miss a day I may not keep going. My legs and hips are so much stronger now. I can now walk up a flight of steps or an incline like it's nothing. I plan to keep walking 10K steps a day the rest of my life, which I feel may be much longer because of it. Just keep going fellow house walker. Keep up the good work!! I also have started making sure I go outside and get some sunlight and air every evening. That boosts my mood so much:)
Another benefit I noticed is that walking is very meditative. You can reflect on the previous day's accomplishments and plan your schedule for the rest of the day, for example.
I’ve watched this video a year ago and got motivated to start my 10k challenge Ive lost 22 lbs already and hope to loose more thank you so much for the inspiration
I’ve been walking 10000+ steps everyday since 50 years (I’m now 61 years young!). I’ve added 10 kms of cycling every day! My all time high weight is 63 kgs that’s five years ago. Now I weigh 56 kgs. I’m a vegetarian all my life eating rice, vegetables and fruits. I consume ghee butter and milk. No junk or processed food. Fast with only water every fortnight (ekadashi). Absolutely healthy! I feel I’m in my 40s!
I’m in my late fifties and feel late twenties. No processed food, no highly processed sugars and oils. I don’t walk 10k steps a day, but I do weights, Crossfit and supplement well.
When I was a much younger I spent a couple years overseas. When I left the U.S. I weighed somewhere between 175-185 lbs. Let's just say 180. The country I was living in had no personal cars and it was much easier to walk everywhere throughout the day. Consequently I think I walked at least 8k every day and probably more like 10k on average. Without doing MUCH excerise on top of that and eating normally... when I came home I weighed 151lbs soaking wet. Crazy. Walking certainly works. Also I was probably the most mentally well and positive thinking I had been during my life at the time.
My husband and I walk minimum 6,000 steps a day and at 75 and 81 I thought this was enough! But now seeing your mother doing 10,000 steps at 77 I feel I should try! (Actually I did 9,800 steps yesterday). Must try harder! We live in a retirement village (minimum age 70) and I am shocked at how few people I see walking. We do two walks a day so we know!
I love this video I started doing this about a year and a half ago I went from 220 pounds with high blood pressure to 160 pounds now and feeling good I changed my eating habits a bit as well but the walking is what got me started and I still walk everyday it’s become just part of my life. I tell everyone who asks me when they see how much I lost being shocked when I say basically all I started doing was going for walks.
I did at least 10k a day and it greatly helped my weight loss journey. It was a start of a healthy lifestyle for me. I’m 5’3 and my starting weight was 143 lbs. Down to 105 lbs. I made 10k a day steps a lifestyle and didn’t consider it as a workout. ❤
Started the Leslie Sansome walk at home program when covid hit. Stopped watching morning gossip tv and took that time to begin. Started with one mile and went up to three miles per day, six days a week. In less than a month and a half, I lost over 12 pounds and my blood pressure dropped to normal. No diet pills, no ozempic just good old fashioned discipline and exercise. Mother nature is amazing. I haven't watched morning gossip tv in a long time now, and not missing it at all. Just hearing friends saying on how great I look, just gives me the incentive to continue. Its been two years, losing a total of fifty pounds and it is so easy to maintain. Great video!
Yay! I started with Fitbit but had to switch to a little pedometer because I wasn’t weird enough already, the Emps from the the device were bugging me. Still, this is cheaper and actually drove me to do more journaling. I now do yoga and have even started with some weight lifting. I am 70 and still have low steps days because I am my dad’s caregiver. But I always try! Go for it folks! Thanks for sharing your story.
Finally, an explanation! Thank you! In my early 50s I was cycling 150 miles/wk. But in hindsight I was gorging myself on rest days and losing no weight. Now I understand.
Dementia is my worst fear its hard to see a loved one going through it, it's pretty motivating to hear that 10000 steps = less of a risk of dementia one thing I noticed when I was making my 10000 steps my sleep was way better as a relatively bad sleeper on average a significant change for me and according to Matthew Walker the Author of why we sleep he said disrupted sleep also increases your risk of dementia. a win win in my opinion.
Regarding activity: Ben Bkiman in his book "Why We Get Sick" recommends getting up and moving every 20 minutes for a couple of minutes to combat insulin resistance. One cardiologist I read recommends moving every 45 minutes. There has been a few studies in Japan that showed that older adults who do "interval walking" for 50 minutes in total per week have significant benefits over those who do steady state walking. Many different approaches to getting up and moving that are simple and straightforward.
Thank you very much for the video. I have understood my problem. My average step count is around 9k but I am constantly gaining weight. After watching your video I have just checked my apple watch and I found a similar patterns as yours. On some days I have 15,20,25k but on other days I am totally sedentary, especially on the days when I am working from home. Thank you for helping to figure out the pit, I am inspired. I will walk everyday 10k from now.
Hey Jon You inspired me to do the 10,000 steps a day❤ I have to make space for this. I’m at 10,000 steps a day now for 16 days. I think this will be a great daily journal entry for me to stay motivated. I’m 57 and taking health seriously for the first time of my life. I’m 293 pounds today and I need to get to 195. I’ll keep you guys posted every month of my weight loss. It does nothing but positive things for us 😊
Until recently my target was a simple 3,000 but very irregularly (3 times a week). Then this May 6,000 irregular. Then this last month 8,000 irregular (4 times a week). I will now attempt 10,000 regularly. I'm only about 10-15 pounds over weight.
I train MMA. I had a physically demanding job for 10yrs. My friends and I used to just walk everywhere. My hobby is walking. For many years I would do at least 10,000 steps in a day on a lazy day once per week on my day off but thats considered lazy lazy. I would usually get around 25-30,000 steps. A few times I hit above the 40,000 mark but that was rare. Due to me being extremely physical I was eating around 4,000-5,000 calories a day. I wasn't fat either I was 175-185lbs(depending on the year) and I was 6'1. I did this for about 10yrs up until about 2 months ago. I still workout but not getting as much steps in but I have been bumping it up. Some days I get 5,000 steps others 15,000. Not getting as nearly as much. I feel lazier. I get tired quicker. Laziness can have a Snowball effect.
Man there are SO many benefits to walking. On top of all the health benefits that are objective of my experience, subjectively my body just… works better. It’s easier to move around in physical space when your body is used to it. My sense of balance, the effort it takes to start or stop movement, crouching, stretching… all that gets more natural. Also, there’s so much time to check in with the self on a good, 30 minute walk. It’s meditative, honestly. You really get a sense of your body when you’re walking. Also, if you’re a headphone person, you can get so much good listening done on a walk. Devouring audiobooks feels like nothing when you’re on a good walk. It’s just so simple & so underrated, imo.
Very inspirational, I’m in! Recently I’ve been walking 5 k’s per day and my 2 main payoffs have been better mental health and more energy. I’m inspired to aim for 10,000 steps per day, everyday. Thank you for the inspiration! 👏👌👍
Super inspiring! I used to get my steps in everyday, but really fallen off since joining a gym and doing weight training. This inspired me to get back into my daily walks, thank you 😄
I’m 70 years old I’ve been walking for five years I stop smoking out of smoke a pack a day now that I walk 10,000 steps a day I feel like a young man now it made a difference when I was young I used to see a lot of people walk and I still say they’re crazy you have to run to lose weight it’s not true walking is the best exercise you can do
i worked retail for 6 years walking well over 10,000 steps ( sometimes 20,000+) and i was in the best shape of my life.. but once I left and got a desk job, i quickly gained 60 lbs and was very out of shape. I actually gained 60lbs in less than 6 months!!
Wow! I hope to be able to find such a generous employer that would reward me with a fitbit after only 25 years of loyalty and service! God bless America 💪😎
my 13000 to 15000 steps a day advantage is that my 3 dogs are happy they get their long walks.i dont loose weight ,still obese and still type II diabetic.for me its just ME time with my dogs and my earbuds in listening to my playlist on spotify.
Awesome 👌 video. Thanks so much. I am 69 I started walking 🚶♂️ two months ago. I lost 9 kilos. I don't have a car so I have to walk to the shop. Walk for groceries. I suddenly felt more healthy and mentally focused. The best thing was to lose the car and start living.again.
I love walking,it makes me feel amazing,it's like a drug, once you start doing it,you can't stop,it helps my mental health as Im bipolar, thank you so much for inspiring me,I promise you I will walk every day, love Suzy.x
Yes! I've been going on a 10k streak for 14 days now and do feel better physically and mentally. It's something to look out for everyday. Also started losing some weight (1-2kg).
On my most recent backpacking trip I lost 10 pounds in 20 days and I was eating 4000 calories per day. Granted, most people don’t have time to walk 20 miles per day, but it does burn a lot of calories.
This video needs to pop up at the top. Great plan. I love this idea for my days off where I probably only get 4,000 steps. I've noticed all the walking videos have a theme; office workers. I'm a PSW and constantly walk different speeds, bending, squatting, pushing, pulling and the average step count is between 13,000 and 16,000. BUT YET, most of us are overweight. People with active jobs, their bodies adapt and therefore they must push harder, further.
I love this so much. I ended up getting a used Garmin this spring, thinking If I didn’t like it, I’d sell it and make my money back. Well, I’m fully convinced buying that Garmin changed my life for the better. I started enjoying running again (on a 99 day streak), am on a 10k step streak (60+ days), and it’s absolutely the best purchase I’ve made in the last 5 years. Cheers! Great video.
Thanks John. Your pre-challenge lifestyle sounds so much like mine right now. Big days of hikes followed by not much activity and then slow weight gain. Dementia runs in our family. I like saving money. You’ve convinced me. Time to start my own challenge. Thanks.
13 days in and loving the challenge. I’m not seeing a weight shift yet but I’m feeling stronger on my elevation hikes. Thanks again for making this video.
I combine my walks with listening to podcasts. So get my couchtime walking along and it takes no mental effort :-) the main plus is that i just feel so very good!
Jon, Since watching your video, I have done 43 days of 5 miles or 10,000 steps per day for 43 days. Sometimes easy - I can do 1-2 miles to and from work and more at work as a teacher. Taking a group of students to Manila was a challenge, but even at the airport waiting for boarding , I can add a mile or so. Our appartment building has 20 storeys , so I can easily do 20 floors most days - .3 mile and the shared underground car park for several blocks takes .3 mile circuit. Enjoyed your PCT hiking videos - any more to follow? Phil - 57 years old - a Brit in South Korea
@@jonallenoutside Jon no need to explain. It was meant as an encouragement. I’m now at 74 days. Looking forward to your new content. Safe travels. Blessings. Phil
10,000 steps for me is 5 miles. I thought I might mention this just because someone might want to know how far 10,000 steps will take you. It takes me about 18 to 20 minutes to walk one mile, that's on fairly flat terrain.
Walking six to eight miles a day has helped me a lot. My last bloodwork profile was 100 per cent perfect. Treadmill, indoor track, around YMCA parking lot and soccer field, greenway, Crowders Mountain State Park trails. Also a lot around house. I gave up running years ago after a few friends developed knee problems. I really love it!
Ive had this ankle pain for over a year and its stopped me from running. Since i began walking regularly back in january this year, first it was over 30 mins. Then I started using my smartwatch and got to 10k. Ive noticed that my ankle pain is reducing and i am getting better quality sleep. I feel like i my mood has improved too
This is a great video and I can't agree with you more. I challenged myself this past December to walk 10 000 steps every day. I was recovering from the after effects of a severe bout of covid. I met my December challenge and have continued on. Just in the six or so weeks, I've noticed improvements. I feel more fit and more in tune with my body. I'm mentally sharp again and those lingering covid symptoms have vanished. In a nutshell, I feel terrific every day and get up in the morning wanting to move. It's addictive and each day you want to meet or exceed that goal and I smile every time I feel my Fitbit vibrate when I hit 10 000.
I do 10000 steps since 2012 april. It has been 11 years. What is important: in 2012 Feb i had a stroke. It was severe. The early days were very very difficult but it started giving results. My limp became normal,to that extent when I walk , people don't even notice.. what a Stroke of luck!!!
I’m about a month in and 99% of my issues are gone. I haven’t always hit 10000. But almost never less than 8000. Probably the best I’ve felt in 4 years.
I asked a nutritionist if I could anything I wanted as long as I walked 10,000 steps up and down a mountain every day. She said sure, but if you only eat junk, don't expect to maintain your health. Dang.
i was very overweight and pre diabetit doctor told me to walk so started walking then got fitbit and eat healthey now slimmer and healthey thanks vidio share now im 70lbs lighter now new person now.
Excellent video Jon! I love the way you simplified things and I totally agree with your opinion as it pertains to weight gain (too many low step days and big appetite) and the 10,000 steps per day ultimately proved your theory. Anyway, thanks for presenting a simple & "sustainable" method to weight management. Also, as a fellow backpacker, I really enjoy your hiking videos.
Love this. I gained weight marathon training. Now I know why!!!! I also started drinking more beer during Covid. About to do dry January and start 10,000 steps as soon as I feel better. I have flu or Covid. Will be testing tomorrow. Congrats to YOU and your MOM and WIFE!!! 👏🏽
It’s easy to do 10000, steps, you need a very strong Will power to do it. I do over 7000 in 1 hour , indoor. & rest & more on daily chores+ 1/2 Hr outside walk, if weather no permits+ set of exercises. Touch wood, I am blessed.
Congrats to your achievement and the high quality of this video. I have a sportwatch since one month now and my goal is 13000 steps a day. I often walk an hour during the lunchbreak or walk home from work 8.5 km. I realy enjoy it. Hope I can sustain it as long as you... greetings from Switzerland
Very interesting, I usually aim for at least 8.200 steps, but while going on prolonged fasts sometimes this number drops to 5k or lower as I get tired easily. I really like the weightloss benefits, but also helps me to think about my life in a positive way.
Wow, congratulations on this amazing feat, Jon! Thank you for sharing your journey and inspiring a lot of ppl. Yes, it really is as simple as having a walking program to settle so many health issues. I now hang out or catch up with friends by meeting at a park and going for walks together before sitting for a while in a cafe. A healthier way of socialising.
Thank you. I have cerebal Palsy, ( One side of my brain is weaker than the other ) I have had a hip replacement, broken right arm ( from the same fall that broke my hip ) and they keep trying to straighten my right ankle that's affected by the CP. But I have started to walk. It's really my "Safe" exercise and I've lost a suitable amount of weight I was on the overweight borderline. Now I eat very healthily and walk 4 miles every single day. I don't have an apple/Garmin watch I just love the countryside on the Town's special pathways. This also avoids depression/anxiety for many also. I am only 54yrs old but I want to live a long happy life.
I do sorta a variation on 10k a day, in that I'm not strict about not getting 10k every single day. For example, if I only do 5k one day, then I can make it up the next day and do 15k. As long as I have 70k at the end of the week. Makes it more manageable for me, and I still get the amazing benefits. I can easily do 20k+ some days. That was unthinkable not long ago
I am started to walk 5k steps on my first week then 10k steps/day on my 2rd week, and now, on my third week I am able to do around 10 ~ 15k steps a day without even noticing until I check my fitness app on my phone. on morning I always do walk for an hour before I go to the wet market (you guess it I also walk when going to the market) , that is around 8k steps during the morning only! then around 5pm just before it gets dark, I do another an hour of walking before I head home. I also change my diet.. I eat more fruits and less meat, I eat more fish and other healthy foods. From 93kg I am now 89kg. my body feel lighter and it feels like I have more energy now than my first week. walking became a habbit now and I enjoy it. I am planning to get a treadmil before April. because sometimes I can't do much walk when it has bad weather.
Great job! I think the combination of being more active and eating healthier improves my chances of success with getting to and maintaining a healthy weight.
@@jonallenoutside Thank you! I am still maintaining the routine and as of now, I am now 80kg. more fruits , veggies , fish than meat + daily walking. really awesome.
Great video, thanks! I'm most interested in how you handled the days when you were sick. Or - if you didn't have to deal with them - how did you do it that you haven't been sick for so long? I've been trying to do 10k steps every day for years, but 2-4x a year I catch a cold/flu with a fever and get sick for a few days. Then it takes me another 3-7 days to recover. During that time the streak is broken and I have to start all over again.
When I got Covid I was very sick for six days. I would do 5-10 minutes at a time on the treadmill at a slow pace until I got my steps in. I also had hernia surgery and kept the streak alive. My doctor and I came up with a plan where I woke up at 4 a.m. on the day of the surgery and got my steps in. By the next day I was able to walk slowly and get it done. It’s not always easy or fun.
Interesting and inspirational. But I'm confused as to why you would gain weight on low step days since it should be calculated on a weekly or monthly basis. Ie if getting an average of 10k steps per day per week in average - it ought not to matter if there are days where you do more or less.
Hi, I'm from India. My target of 10000 step days in a year is 275. I have been meeting my target for the last 5 years. How do you think i'm doing? To tell you, I am off blood pressure medicines for the last 3 years, bettered my sleeping patterns and digestions troubles.
I am 57 yo and I lost 15 kg by having a low carb and sugar diet (keto) along with 9000+ steps on average 5-7 days a week with weight training everyday. I realise the diet is unrealistic and I can no longer maintain it. Although I am maintaining the same amount of exercises, I am gaining weight again with a larger waist line. So I am sceptical in just walking can lose weight?
I lost 12 additional pounds in 30 days on a recent hiking trip eating like a maniac but walking 15-20 miles per day. My wife wants me to eat more because she says I look too skinny now. I realize that very, very few people have the time to walk that much, but it certainly worked for me.
Great video my question is in all that time you went for you must’ve been sick on some of those days and you must’ve walked through sickness is that correct?
That is correct. Luckily, there was only one day where I was sick enough that it was a real pain to get my steps in. Also, I recently had hernia surgery and the day after was a challenge but my surgeon said doing my steps would do no harm so I toughed it out. My wife thinks I’m nuts. She’s probably right.
There are studies that show exercise is as good or better than medication for depression as well. I get a lot of reading done on my walks as i listen to books on Audible.
@@jonallenoutside I've struggled with mild depression most of my life but never used medication. i used to jog and now i walk and it is definitely mood elevating as well as keeping my weight stable.

Just hearing friends saying on how great I look, just gives me the incentive to continue. Its been two years, losing a total of fifty pounds and it is so easy to maintain. Great video!
Excellent job! Glad to hear you are having success.
Because of David Goggins and UA-cam videos like this I am now walking 6+ miles a day.
Great job! Keep it going!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Hey Jon
You inspired me to do the 10,000 steps a day❤ I have to make space for this. It does nothing but positive things for us 😊
@@williampasternak1623 Awesome! You can do this!
Great work!
Super inspiring! I used to get my steps in everyday, but really fallen off since joining a gym and doing weight training. This inspired me to get back into my daily walks, thank you 😄
Thanks for the reply. Good luck with your walking.
Yeah, those desk jobs can be tough. Sitting all day doesn't do your back any favors either.
Wow! I hope to be able to find such a generous employer that would reward me with a fitbit after only 25 years of loyalty and service! God bless America 💪😎

Just curious, if you're comfortable answering, why do you think there is no weight loss? That's a huge amount of steps.
Thank you for setting an example.
Awesome 👌 video. Thanks so much. I am 69 I started walking 🚶♂️ two months ago. I lost
9 kilos. I don't have a car so I have to walk to the shop. Walk for groceries. I suddenly felt more healthy and mentally focused. The best thing was to lose the car and start living.again.
It really does make a difference. Great job!
I love walking,it makes me feel amazing,it's like a drug, once you start doing it,you can't stop,it helps my mental health as Im bipolar, thank you so much for inspiring me,I promise you I will walk every day, love Suzy.x
This is very encouraging for those of us who can't do gym.
Yes! I've been going on a 10k streak for 14 days now and do feel better physically and mentally. It's something to look out for everyday. Also started losing some weight (1-2kg).
Nice work!
I currently walk about 6,000 steps a day. I’m going to start pushing thru to 10,000.
Good luck!
Walking is super effective...
I just walled in my home for 1.5 months and lost 8 kgs
Humans are naturally designed to walk ....
Excellent work!
Thanks John. Your pre-challenge lifestyle sounds so much like mine right now. Big days of hikes followed by not much activity and then slow weight gain. Dementia runs in our family. I like saving money. You’ve convinced me. Time to start my own challenge. Thanks.
Best of luck!
13 days in and loving the challenge. I’m not seeing a weight shift yet but I’m feeling stronger on my elevation hikes. Thanks again for making this video.
@@freedom_on_the_trail Great job! Keep it going and the rest will take care of itself.
I combine my walks with listening to podcasts. So get my couchtime walking along and it takes no mental effort :-) the main plus is that i just feel so very good!
Jon,
Since watching your video, I have done 43 days of 5 miles or 10,000 steps per day for 43 days.
Sorry it took so long to reply. I just got back from the Arizona Trail and will publish my first video soon.
Nice! Glad it’s working for you.
Ive had this ankle pain for over a year and its stopped me from running. Since i began walking regularly back in january this year, first it was over 30 mins. Then I started using my smartwatch and got to 10k. Ive noticed that my ankle pain is reducing and i am getting better quality sleep. I feel like i my mood has improved too
That’s awesome
I'm 56, and I exercise. It's a must for me. I have health issues that can get worse if I don't exercise.
10k steps per day will net you an additional 200 calories to eat or lose weight with.
Over time this will make a big difference.
Well done!
Thanks for sharing your story! Keep it going!
Honestly desk jobs are killers, anyway, thanks for this video! Gonna try get up to 10k steps a day!
That is incredible. Keep up the great work!
It also helps with long term endurance! I get fatigued far less when playing basketball with friends.
Alright Ill take the challenge. I"ve had a similar story with my back.
Appreciate the tip on getting to 5000 before leaving work.
Dang.
That would be nice though!
i was very overweight and pre diabetit doctor told me to walk so started walking then got fitbit and eat healthey now slimmer and healthey thanks vidio share now im 70lbs lighter now new person now.
That is awesome. Excellent job!
Thank you for the kind words!

Great work!
Thank you! Good luck on your journey!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. Good luck on your journey.
Ive been trying to do the 10,000 challenge for years. I was never successful. This video pumped me up and made me want to do it. Thank you so much!

Wow I’m so grateful for this video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It has been a tremendously benefit for my health.
Five years! Wooo hoooo!
Will complete my first year of daily walking 5 miles. A1C numbers down already. Firm believer!
Nice work!
You’re awesome!!
1,300.25 miles in my walking year. Happy about that!
Incredible!
So encouraging! Thank you very much ❤

Well done Jon.

@@jonallenoutside Thank you! I am still maintaining the routine and as of now, I am now 80kg.
more fruits , veggies , fish than meat + daily walking. really awesome.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE WORLD BETTER
My logic is that by completing eliminating low step days I have more steps overall and a higher daily average.

I always tell people walking is the optimal human exercise. We are designed to be foraging walkers.
@Steven Brown I suppose that would depend on the walker. I can easily lose myself in an hour long walk.
my best is 70.000 steps in one day going for 100.000 steps in one day been doing 10k steps for 2 year straight not missed a day on my Apple watch...

Some medications can lead to weight gain which I'm sure doesn't help with a person's mental state. I prefer a long walk outdoors to meds any day!
