i been a RN for 5 months now. this is by far the most stressful job i ever had. i still feel like i know nothing. you call doctors and they dont know a thing about your patient because they got who know how many more. one night i had 5 out my 6 patients crash at once. one was bleeding from a surgery, another couldnt breath and kept taking her bipap off, another with a clog peg tube, another one a 90 year old lady vomiting and diarrhea. i took care of all these patients and made sure they lived. i knew what was wrong with them and kept going back and forth room by room. but i didnt get time to read the progress notes or all the details of the patient. i didnt get a chance to make a proper report. 5 patients crashing at once is stressful. so the doctor came and ask questions about the patient with bleeding surgery. i couldnt answer probably the family member said i was a horrible nurse and new nothing about the patient. that ruin my day i wanted to quit right there nursing is not easy. there are times that is rewarding but there times i wonder why i am a nurse. i do care for my patients i want to be a good nurse but there is so much that is expected from you. nursing is one of the hardest profession in the world
God bless you.Things happen in our life.Nobody's whole life is perfect. You are doing the great job,you are a good nurse and remember no one can be perfect! God will know all good that you did.Always think about love and forgiveness, god bless you.xx
bless your soul. nursing is never easy and people underestimate nurses. don’t let anyone tell you you’re a bad nurse. just work as hard as you can and know that you’re doing your best.
It took me 50 years to become a nurse - along the way I was a chemist, env. scientist and respiratory therapist - there is no time limit to be in service of something greater than yourself. To stop and listen to a person's story will help heal and diagnosis.
dzcafe wow! you are inspiring. I was once a chemistry undergrad so I can in the future apply to pharm school but I learned for a few years that the laboratory was not me 100%. Im in nursing school now
I love your description of how people perceive nurses. As a male nurse, this is extremely looked down upon because men should be the doctors, according to my patients. If people could see what I see and experience all that I have, maybe they would understand my reasoning for choosing nursing. And the path to my degree had lots of curves I did not plan on. With all that has happened to me, I will proclaim loudly and proudly claim that "I am an nurse."
@RetroGamerTy I think in time the perception will change as more men enter the profession. I am looking to become a nurse and I am also a young man wanting to change my career. I can understand why you want to be a nurse as that is how I am feeling right now. How are you are going with it all now? What kind of difficulties did you have in your degree?
I study nursing at the university and this is my first year. one of my teachers said that being a nurse means that you have the biggest responsibility and the most limited power. she also said that being a nurse means that you will have the chance to experience peoples happiest and most horrible times of their lives. but she hasnt regretted being a nurse herself. even if I study nursing I don't consider myself as one. you need to spend years to become one. but above all if you want to become a good nurse you need to be HUMAN first.
Ολγα Αντωνοπούλου something I'm worried about is being too compassionate and empathetic. Im very emotional and cry when I see other people cry so I hope once I get into the profession I'll be able to harness my feelings!
Luka Megurine I started clinical's now and I noticed I'm so preoccupied with what I need to know and do as well as proper procedure that I don't really have the mental capacity left for "feeling" lol
@Super Scared Corncutt I'm a new grad nurse and I can relate to this. I've been at my job for a month and especially the first week or two I really was sooooo focused on doing the procedures right (such as hanging the IV properly or giving the med properly) that there was really no room to be all friendly with the patient and chat with them. I was too busy focusing on not trying to kill them! lol. I've been working there for a month and it's gotten better with certain things but there are still SOOOO many things I don't know that I need to focus hard on.
I'm studying nursing at university and I get what you mean. I still don't feel like a nurse even when I get called one, though technically I'm not a nurse as I'm not registered.
As a nurse, you hear stories of the good and the bad. You hear nurses complain about the pay and how stressful the job may be. You get to work and nothing goes according to plan, no day is the same. As a nurse, one thing you must never forget is WHY you became a nurse in the first place!!!! If it was for the money, you just shot yourself in the foot. If it was because everyone else is doing it, you won’t last too long... you must truly figure out your WHY in order to last in a field as a nurse. Not only that, think about that your super power is! What makes you you? What makes you stand out from the other nurses? What do you bring to the table that no one else can offer? What about you can you leave with each and every patient you come in contact with? Nursing isn’t a job for me, nursing is a calling! I’m not pursuing it for money, nor am I pursuing it to be stress free. I am a nurse because I want to be more like Christ. I want to serve others and make a difference in the world one patient at a time. It’s a purpose in my work, in my drive, in me showing up to my floor everyday. There’s purpose in what I do, my WHY is what drives me daily and even if the day gets hard, my WHY reminds me of why I got started and it reminds me of the struggle Jesus had to endure to save a ranch like me.... so you have to figure it out and if nursing isn’t for you, don’t waste any more time, figure out what’s for you and pursue it 100%. I love nursing and I love serving others in and out of the hospital. - RN/BSN
I want to eventually become a doctor so I can primarily help diagnose and treat patients, but I want to start my career, and gain valuable experience, with nursing for exactly the same reason. Nursing will allow me to truly help people and also help me to become stronger in the character traits Jesus wants us to exemplify. Sincerely, thank you for sharing. God Bless you!
@@MrJenniferwahl8 LOL checked your channel your on a bunch of videos putting people.down on nursing! Sounds like someone (you) failed nursing program so you lurk and hate on others trying to be someone I life because you cant ! Dont listen. To this woman .pray for her.
I am 40 years old. Have been doing purchasing in Logistic. Currently, a student nurse in Singapore, in my second year. It is a calling for me when i choose to do nursing. I feel you Sana Goldberg. It is a fulfilling passion for me. I will not stop nursing. My wife followed my footstep and she is a nursing student now. I am proud of all for the nurses.
I have been a nurse for a long time. I worked on the floor, as a manager and as an educator in nursing. I personally find this approach as a nurse is not very helpful. When nurses see the profession as a "calling", often they put up with too much. When we can see it just as a job, that's when people are able to put healthy boundaries between them and the job, and look after themselves too. Also, they can demand the rights that they usually would in other working environments. I feel like picturing nursing in altruistic way end up giving nurses standards that is unrealistic and make them burn out quicker. Nurses should not be seen as angels or saviours, but just other humans working very hard, with limitations.
@@user-3jd6hek5h hi.. your comment is very helpful. i am a nurse too.. thinking of going back to the field Cox currently I am working sd occupational nurse.. thank you for your comment
Thank you for your enlightening talk!! I am currently a critical care nurse; however, my first degree was a BA in theatre and dance. For many years I was a Broadway performer and at that time I could have never imagined my eventual path into the field of nursing. Due to my liberal arts background, I have always envisioned myself as an outsider in the hospital setting, as I see the world and the human condition through an alternate lens compared to many of my peers. I used to believe my abilities and worth as an RN were tethered to skills like inserting Foley catheters, IVs, titrating drips, etc.... but I have since learned that my main asset is the ability to communicate with and relate to others. This is not something I was taught in nursing school, rather it was realized through years of life experience. This career has humbled me to the Nth degree and left me with a deep realization that the human experience is beyond fragile. Somedays, it is very apparent that listening and actively communicating with a patient is by far the most powerful medicine they will receive during the course of their stay.
Thank you so much for this. I’m 51 taking my first anatomy class and trying to get to nursing school. I’m hitting every roadblock there is and at times I just want to give up. But you have given me a lot to think about.
Roxanne Whitaker I’m turning 50 this year and seriously considering getting into healthcare. Thanks for commenting. At my age, I’m scared of making such a big change. I have a need to help people, though, and can’t turn it off.
Heather Elzinga I am so happy I gave you something to think about. There are so many different ways to help people so look at all your options and really figure out what your passion is and then go for it. Check out your community college and find out if they have a part-time nursing program or just a full-time nursing program and what they require. If you have any questions please let me know because I’ve done a lot of research and really have a grasp on what I’m trying to do. Good luck!
And please let’s all acknowledge our CNA and CMAs who are the only reason most nursing facilities make it!!!!!! I am a student nurse and if I need to know anything I go straight to the CNAs
Alice Ou I've been to tons of units without CNAs. My unit has CNAs and all they do is bring drinks and stuff. They don't bathe or change the patients or get vitals. CNAs are great, but they're not the reason units succeed lolol.
I've been a male nurse for a few months now and it has been the best decision I have ever done. Nursing is a people profession. If you don't have a deep love to care or listen to people then maybe it's not for you. Try it. Shadow a nurse and see what it's like. Nurses heal people. We do so by first physically healing, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.
The comment section is very heart warming. I am a nurse from the Philippines and my destiny brought me to USA. I was trying to avoid the health care in the u.s as my 1st job was working as a laundry attendant in a nursing home. I've seen things I might not wanted in my life. Bounced from jobs to jobs and then my destiny bought me back to my calling. I passed my nclex exam and working as an RN in the same nursing home where everything started. I am thrilled, curious, excited and anxious at the same time but THIS IS MY CALLING.
I just started a nursing degree. I’m terrified but also so excited for What could be. A challenging career where you can leave the building feeling like you’ve made a difference that day
My deepest thanks to all nurses... "Assist the world of humanity as much as possible. Be the source of consolation to every sad one, assist every weak one, be helpful to every indigent one, care for every sick one, be the cause of glorification to every lowly one, and shelter those who are overshadowed by fear." ~ The Promulgation of Universal Peace, Baha'i Faith
I have a BA and MA in Communication Studies and Humanities and decided to pursue Nursing a few years into my career in Marketing. My mother also worked in healthcare as an x-ray Technologist and I thought I would go the other direction. I can relate to every word. I am approaching my pinning from my ADN program next month and I have not regretted one second of my choice to work "with" people on the level that nurses do. Thank you for this presentation. It helped me normalize my experience in a way. You are so brave!
I’m a high school student looking to go into nursing and I’ve never understood what people meant by saying they had a “calling” to nursing. But I am very fascinated by medicine and being able to truly care for people would be a great privilege. I would be happy to acquire the knowledge to be able to do so.
Thank you so much for this video. I am currently 31 years old going back to school after not being in school not knowing what I wanted to do after high school to get my nursing degree. It feels like I've hit every bump in the road and just feels like I should give up but I know I won't because I want this so badly and seeing this video definitely gives me the motivation to keep going.
thank God that people like Sana are speaking up and out. I started saying the same thing over 30 years ago when I wrote The Nurse's Story. I did these same talks but time has changed even if the perception of nurses hasn't . Nursing is the greatest passion of my life, and there's nothing that I would trade even one horrible moment for. With courage, intelligence and commitment, the rewards are infinte!!
I am a nursing student, It caught my attention when i saw this TED speech about a nurse. But for some reason it didn't interest me, the video is so boring. Sorry. The topic could have been better. I listened to it for 5 minutes, nothing caught my attention.
@@melopsicodelia No it’s not. She became an RN. It’s way more stressful to become an RN via an accelerated program than a four year program. Many who do a four year program would not make it through an intense one year program - the shorter program takes a higher level of academic skill and study to get through.
Being a nurse is more than a passion for me ... it's a while MINISTRY for me ... God shall use me to heal those who are sick in hospital... it's a very land to work but you need a great amount of holy spirit as well as his fruits in a while packages :-) to make it your passion and impact people...
I will be 62 next month and came to nursing early last year in a graduate entry program. I love working with people i care for, but i have found some nurses treat students poorly. I have had excellent buddy nurses and preceptors too from whom i have learned so much. Everyone has something to offer and life experience can be highly advantageous.
If you take time as a nurse to listen to your patients, each one is a wealth of wisdom. Nursing has thought us so much and we also make amazing entrepreneurs. If you want the best experience as a nurse, go travel. Travel nursing was the best decision that we have done in our careers.
Thank you for honoring the power of nursing! I am a nurse and you are a shining light. You are sharing with us how we as nurses can make the world more comforting loving and caring.
I LOVE this tedtalk! I have my nursing school interview this week and this has been extremely insightful and has even given me some amazing talking points.💗💗
Am a Enrolled Nurse in Australia and am currently studying my RN's. Have been working in health care as an assistant in nursing since age of 16, growing up in my later teens surrounded by people require 24/7 care has shaped me as a person. Holding the hand of someone in pain or dying is one of the most powerful moments of my life, being there for them, being able to help ease the pain, for them not to be alone. Some days it is hard, it is hard emotionally to do. But being a Nurse isn't a choice, it is a calling. Would never want to be a dr who just diagnoses and then leaves the patient, it is us Nurses whom stay by the patient and do the real miracle of healing. Sana Goldberg it took a lot of courage to disclose your sexuality in your talk, and for that I am thankful. You speak honest and truthful.
My first step towards respecting nurses came when my daughter became a nurse. My second step towards respecting nurses and hospital staff in general came when I became a nursing assistant non clinical as basically a patient sitter, aka, patient safety assistant. I have gone back to school at 60 years old, school of life.
Susan Berlien I was accepted into an accelerated program and I'm scared to do it because like you said, I'm still not 100% what nurses do... I don't know how to know for sure if it's for me 😕
11:20 appointments on a little device, “I-nurse”. Literally I- everything. Counseling, psychologists, etc now with pandemic restrictions and with how much more accessible it is
I couldn’t finish watching. As a nurse at the critical care bedside for 35 years, she’s lost me and I hope no truly brilliant people are so turned off by this nonsense that they decide not to continue their studies and complete their degree! We need brilliance and innovation in nursing!
Yeah... I don't know what she was talking about. I'm 41 with an Associate of Political Science (good for my profession of waitressing!) and thinking about getting into nursing. I'm just at the beginning of learning about the profession, educational requirements, etc. Cool story, huh? Sorry about the ramble. I agree with your assessment of her talk.
I was once a CNA then an LPN and now an RN and for sure never more rewarding an art with many hats thanks God I in this month I celebrate 20 yrs in the same place and many to count
This speech would be more appropriately titled, “What If You Went To Nursing Clinicals, became a Psychiatric Nurse, but because actually working full time for a paycheck as one is really stressful, depressing and frustrating with a really messed up schedule that ruins your life outside of work-so instead you give idealistic speeches about being a Nurse.”
I am a Korean student who wants to be a nurse. Although it's hard to hear a lot about nursing jobs, working hours increase as soon as you hear about them. It is said that conflicts often occur between people who work in the same profession. Although there are many things under stress because of that kind of work, I am worried that I will be a nurse because I just want to help others, and I will be very tired.
I’m Korean high school student and I have been thinking to be a nurse. All the people around me including even my homeroom teacher says to me things like “I don’t understand why you want to be a nurse. it’s horribly hard job.” Everytime I hear those things I become more and more scary and afraid of becoming a nurse and my worries getting bigger :( I don’t know what to do..
You have to figure out why you want to become a nurse, what is your why? It might take time to figure it out, and it might not be something easily put into words, but the most important thing is that it motivates you. For me it's having an impact on people's lives every day. It's getting past the small talk, where vulnerability and humanity is visible that keeps me sane in regards to this crazy world. It's being for someone, anyone. Don't forget to take care of yourself as well. Nursing is hard for sure, but it's very giving.
AwokenLion , it's changed. When I was an RN in the 70s we were treated with respect by management and the public. It has totally changed now and it started in the 80s with the cost of healthcare going up. We got disrespected by management and made to feel like a burden to them financially. Now we are treated as servants, at least that's how it is where I worked.
I am a nurse and I always try my best to tell my nurse aids how much I appreciate them because they are just as essential as we are and deserve just as much admiration and appreciation
To me, being a nurse is very rewarding. But sometimes, you have to find your own strength and motivation to hold on it. Why? Because of all the pressure, the responsibility on you. Nowadays, nurses are not respected like how it should be. Making me unmotivated day by day and hope the day end very soon. Pray for me :(
God bless all the people who work in health care and every important role in the world ."Becoming a nurse is not a choice,it's calling" this has made me understand a lots.
Bella I think the “calling” thing is mostly propaganda. The world needs nursing but it’s an undesirable profession. They have to sell it somehow, otherwise they have to just keep paying nurses more to make it worthwhile.
I am a nurse, for more than a decade already, caring is inherent quality as human being. Its a good feeling to help, however being a nurse under high work pressure is not healthy for any nurses. Our soceity expect high quality nurses, difficult studies and continuing education we need to undergo to be the best nurse. However the reality in the workfloor if confrontering, lesser staffs leading to high risk of patient neglects even death. WE want to do our job well, but ratio on patient-nurse care is ultimate importance to deliver care. If the governments dont recognize this problem, maybe better to develop a robot with a physical strengths to carry , lifts patients, but a soft side with a heart like a real human nurse, we are living in a modern world, maybe that is the future of healthcare. it seems modernism is taking away realities of the necessities of healthcare .
The first time I had ever heard about Ted talks was studying to become a nurse assistant. I was the top student in my class and have had a thriving career as an LNA for 6 years.
To the people dissing CNA’s ... When I worked at my hospital as an Acute Care Tech (very similar to a CNA) we took vitals, assisted feeding patients, cleaned them, changed their briefs, emptied foleys and colostomy bags, assisted in changing dressings, ran codes alongside doctors and RN’s and LPN’s, checked blood glucose, comforted patients and families when the worst was realized, bring them water and food when they cannot, and so much more. There are amazing nurses assistants and awful ones, but that is based on the content of that persons CHARACTER and not a representation of nurses assistants as a whole. Hospitals should reprimand lazy employees, PERIOD, despite what positions they may hold.
Remember there is good moments and bad moments. none of the comments tell the whole story, they are the highlighted moments. You choose what best fits you but there is bad moment for every career that you have to overcome. Hope you pursue nursing and have the courage to take the profession beyond the current level.
Find out for yourself if it's for you. Everyone always has something to say: good and bad. You can't always run away from things because part of the people hate it.
I graduated high school early at 16, went straight into an ADN program and graduated with my RN at 18, started working as a nurse while in my free time going through an RN-BSN program. I’m currently 21 and have now been a nurse for 3 years. It is HARD! It’s hard being short staffed and having a dangerous patient to nurse ratio... it’s hard when you have one patient crashing while another is screaming at you to get them ice, juice, extra pillows etc... it’s hard when you constantly deal with abuse from patients, it’s hard when your working a 12 hr shift that turns into an 18 hr shift bc someone called in... it’s hard having to critically think literally every single minute of your 12+hr shift bc if you slack even for one minute you could loose your job & license to work... it’s hard when you literally do everything for the patients, and the doctors get all of the credit when in reality most of them don’t do sh*t... nursing is hard, it’s not glamorous, and it will test you in ways you can’t imagine.
What a BEAUTIFUL Description of Nurses. You put into words exactly how I feel about this profession I have now been in for 16 years . Thank you for the beautiful representation/ explanation to the world of who we Nurses are.
Hi I am a nurse, and because of it it is ok for me to tell you that I am a lesbian. Shoot back to "audience faces,".... Everyone in shock, blanked out faces.... Priceless!
I have just graduated from college of nursing, and I don't like this job because the stories l hared it before and iam so frustrated now, I will be a nurse after few months and I hope to do my best and like this job in the future ❤
So, did she ever work as a nurse? It didn't sound like it. All nursing school stories and quotes from nursing theorists (we don't cite them much) I'm sorry but after 15 years as an RN, I don't think you should wax eloquently about the experience of nursing without having lived it.
I would never recommend nursing to anyone I really care about. I'm glad I myself am the example so my sister and future children will never think twice about entering the field. It's stress. Documentation, lifting, exposure to pathogens, verbal abuse from colleagues, patients and visitors, etc. And trust me, there's more. As a nurse, you wear too many hats - you're the nurse, pharmacist, RT, dietary, PT/OT, wound care, etc. And you have to know that you're responsible for knowing how to do all these things required of you and stay within your own scope as a nurse. There's too much working against you, yet too much on your shoulders and when things go wrong, no ones there to back you. And then while you have all this on your mind, management wants you do whatever you have to do to improve "patient satisfaction." It's a terrible choice to go this route. Stay away if you're doubting it at all.
I absolutely agree! I’m only an LVN so I’m only making 30 something K after all the stress, grossness, harassment, long hours, nights and weekends. I want to either get my RN for the O.R. Or leave nursing if I can find a similar paying job.
im majoring in molecular bio and have been thinking of joining nursing because of the job outlook and i like helping people but idk im a bit scared to commit to it xc
Looking for an online ADN program. I have a bachelors and am looking for a school/program that is online (besides the clinicals obviously) Any advice????? Still need to take prerequisites and everything, just looking for a program before so I can take the prereq. at a community college. any advice is appreciated
If you have a Bachelors why do you want to do an ADN? Do a BSN it will take you less time and you'll be able to get a job. Talk to your university. You can work the prereqs on line as well. There are so many schools where you can do a second degree nursing prelicensure.
Excellent Ted Talk . Nurses already in the profession need to hear this. So I have sent it on to my nursing school's Fb site. Thanks for doing this TED Talk. " NURSING GRADUATES of St. Mary's Hospital Brooklyn, New York". (Yes, we are a 33 month , Roman Catholic hospital program that closed in 1971 & started in 1889.)
I am also starting the school of nursing but what I have figure out is that nursing is not about money just about loving people, Once you are motivated by money this is not the right however it's professional, I loved the way we interact with lot of people, patients and I can help you build humanity in yourself.
Really. I want to major n English while I am a nursing major. For the love of Jesus, I will become a nurse. I really want to study cardiology and do research as well. I can be a writer as well. 💞
These are all very good goals, you may find they are all related. focus on one thing at a time and never give up learning, you will be able to use all of the abilities you have in your nursing career. Nursing profession needs people like you! Good luck!
The fact you can obtain a nursing license, after only one year of training because of a bachelors degree is something unrelated, demonstrates how far the nursing schools have fallen in quality. Nursing school have become degree mills.
I have a bachelor degree in Nursing since 1995. I had difficulties to work as a RN like I was taught in school. I was dignosed with bipolar disorder in 2002 because triggered with the Nursing job. Today I am trying to get back to work with a reasonable accomodation status. Any advice will be welcome. Thanks.
I am 52kilo and everyday I need to wash 136 kilo patient who can barely move and need to be push in a wheelchair. Aside from 3 others . I feel I can’t get out of the profession cause I don’t know what else to do or how to earn in other means. I feel depressed but I have to go on be strong because I still need to care my kids at home. Many nurses get burn out . Why nobody listens to the grievances of nurses ???
Is there a point? Would you please just get to it? You keep pausing as though you just said something profound, but there's no real content here. Just a lot of self-serving chatter in an extremely grating young-girl croaking voice.
What the heck is this lady talking about. I don't have a clue. In addition, why does one comment after another talk nothing about how stressful the job is? Can this stress be because people today can't handle stress? I am considering becoming and LPN because of the short training and decent pay. I'm 58 and went through divorce after a lifetime homemaker and have a daughter with autism. I do like fast paced environments. I worked as a personal care associate for people with mental disabilities. It was not all fun, like getting thrown up on, however, I enjoyed working with the clients.
Nursing is terrible. Patients are entitled, expect hotel-style service with you as the wait staff. Even that you could get over, since the patients are sick. However, it is the endless demands of administrators and "leaders" who put unreasonable demands on nurses. Forcing us to do more with less. I would tell anyone to NEVER do it. It isn't worth it. It isn't worth the stress, anxiety, nights, weekends, holidays or times with your family!
Its a heavy responsibility. Nobody wants to be at a hospital, but someone has to stand up and take care of loved ones when others can’t along with other providers... its not for everyone
Most people just go into for the money then they dont like itbut they continue to work and be stuck with it some say they not going bacl to school to fall in debt again
Oh wow you must work where I work and I work at a Drug and mental health facility .... Talk about the twilight zone where hard workers like myself get chewed out and lazy people get away with everything.... I could go on with counselors who tried to tell you how be a nurse but knows nothing about nursing ect ... I could write a book
i been a RN for 5 months now. this is by far the most stressful job i ever had. i still feel like i know nothing. you call doctors and they dont know a thing about your patient because they got who know how many more. one night i had 5 out my 6 patients crash at once. one was bleeding from a surgery, another couldnt breath and kept taking her bipap off, another with a clog peg tube, another one a 90 year old lady vomiting and diarrhea. i took care of all these patients and made sure they lived. i knew what was wrong with them and kept going back and forth room by room. but i didnt get time to read the progress notes or all the details of the patient. i didnt get a chance to make a proper report. 5 patients crashing at once is stressful. so the doctor came and ask questions about the patient with bleeding surgery. i couldnt answer probably the family member said i was a horrible nurse and new nothing about the patient.
that ruin my day i wanted to quit right there
nursing is not easy. there are times that is rewarding but there times i wonder why i am a nurse. i do care for my patients i want to be a good nurse but there is so much that is expected from you. nursing is one of the hardest profession in the world
Geez
God bless you.Things happen in our life.Nobody's whole life is perfect. You are doing the great job,you are a good nurse and remember no one can be perfect! God will know all good that you did.Always think about love and forgiveness, god bless you.xx
Thank goodness you were there. Is your hospital understaffed or is this the norm?
young mystery do you mind if i ask some questions about ur job i want to become an rn
bless your soul. nursing is never easy and people underestimate nurses. don’t let anyone tell you you’re a bad nurse. just work as hard as you can and know that you’re doing your best.
It took me 50 years to become a nurse - along the way I was a chemist, env. scientist and respiratory therapist - there is no time limit to be in service of something greater than yourself. To stop and listen to a person's story will help heal and diagnosis.

like the staffing allows you time to listen to anything, you run and work short staffed, sucks, she was so right in her comment !
Very inspiring! I, too, am a Respiratory Therapist turned RN.
what hospital allows YOU to diagnose anything ??? a bartender can do the same as above
RetroGamerTy 👏
Nice comment, but “an nurse” made me wince. You are “a nurse”
Exactly! Being a nurse isn't for those not smart enough to become physicians. It's for those who want to treat and heal, to love and care for others.
I have high respects to male nurses...
At a university ?
- RN/BSN
shut up
Amen! ❤️❤️ This is so informative, thank you.
Absolutely amazing Jacqueline!

Nursing is not a job

But one thing I know for sure...
It is a CALLING

Good luck!
Roxanne Whitaker thank you!

This is one of the most moving Ted talks that I have ever watched. I feel so empowered to begin my career as a nurse in two years.
Where are you from?
I'm also a nursing student
And please let’s all acknowledge our CNA and CMAs who are the only reason most nursing facilities make it!!!!!! I am a student nurse and if I need to know anything I go straight to the CNAs
Coconut ScienceGirl92 Agreed!
What about units without CNAs?
I’ve been to three units without CNAs lol
Alice Ou I've been to tons of units without CNAs. My unit has CNAs and all they do is bring drinks and stuff. They don't bathe or change the patients or get vitals. CNAs are great, but they're not the reason units succeed lolol.
Brandi Gibson CNAs are fantastic. Idk where you’re working lol.
Mustafa Ansari I’m a senior looking to change careers and pursue an accelerated nursing program after!!!
I have a BA and MA in Communication Studies and Humanities and decided to pursue Nursing a few years into my career in Marketing. My mother also worked in healthcare as an x-ray Technologist and I thought I would go the other direction. I can relate to every word. Is X-ray Tech good field to get into
Same here.. I too was a marketing professional now becoming a nurse
"Grand ideas are only as important as your ability to tell someone 'You are safe' or 'I am here.'" I love some of the quotes from this speech.
I’m a high school student looking to go into nursing and I’ve never understood what people meant by saying they had a “calling” to nursing. But I am very fascinated by medicine and being able to truly care for people would be a great privilege. I would be happy to acquire the knowledge to be able to do so.
That sounds like a calling to me
You'll understand more during your internships
As a psychiatric RN, I really loved this talk. Thank you.

Plus being a nurse in just 1 years is embarrassing to real nurses.
I love nursing very much . I hope i pass to be a RN I'm still studying for be a greater nurse. Wish me luck .
I love every aspect of this. I am psych nurses and I’ve done addictions. I also got my BSN from an accelerated program. This hits close to home .

Mitchell Brown are the nurses restricted from doing glucose testing if they do not have Bsn degree?!
Hey Mitchell, I'm currently studying my ENS in Australia! Can't wait.
I admire her too. 😊
Great 🌟

I'll become an empathetic nurse..one day I'll stand on this stage🤩🤩
My first step towards respecting nurses came when my daughter became a nurse. My second step towards respecting nurses and hospital staff in general came when I became a nursing assistant non clinical as basically a patient sitter, aka, patient safety assistant. I have gone back to school at 60 years old, school of life.
I’ve been an RN for 15 years. It’s a lot harder than I imagined when I started and really before I went into it I had no idea what nursing was.
Susan Berlien I was accepted into an accelerated program and I'm scared to do it because like you said, I'm still not 100% what nurses do... I don't know how to know for sure if it's for me 😕

What’s your sign?
Don't look into darker aspects..😇
You can be definitely be a Nurse..only if u feel to whole heartedly
The nurse stories in the comments are far more interesting, intriguing and inspiring than the speaker ☺️
Thank God I wasn’t the only one who felt she was milk toast
Yeah, I could not pull the topic from this speech at all :-/
I’m Korean high school student and I have been thinking to be a nurse.
Don't do it it's a horrible and underpaid job around the world wherever you go.
Hi, it's been 2 years. I wonder what major did you choose?
Nurses are looked down upon? Try being a nurse aid.
Amen
Nurse aid is the bottom totem pole . we are look down as nurse aide. it better to just become a rn or a nurse practioner
AwokenLion yasss so true, take it from a nurses aid
I am a nurse and I always try my best to tell my nurse aids how much I appreciate them because they are just as essential as we are and deserve just as much admiration and appreciation
To me, being a nurse is very rewarding. But sometimes, you have to find your own strength and motivation to hold on it. Why? Because of all the pressure, the responsibility on you. Nowadays, nurses are not respected like how it should be. Making me unmotivated day by day and hope the day end very soon. Pray for me :(
How you doing
The speaker sounds distant to true bedside nursing/hands on care. More like a student nurse practicing public speaking....
Gail Ali This was a waste of time.
Yes. This video is painful to watch.
Yes, like an essay for school admission 🤦🏻♀️
I am a nurse and that won't ever change. No one is in control of my career but me. If I choose to walk away, that's on me!
Watching this until I realized she is living my future life. Applying to her former nursing school next year!
Update: I got in to an accelerated program and will have my BSN in exactly 1 year
I became a nurse, my narcissistic grandmother was proud, then she told me.. I should've became a doctor because I'm male.
Shes old school smh
I appreciated some of her points but she was all over the place.
Tiffanie _ it’s definitely a tough job
not in my plans to become a nurse. but I enjoy all the process and get the value of life that I never imagined before.
Im taking nursing but after reading the comments i dont want anymore
Remember there is good moments and bad moments. none of the comments tell the whole story, they are the highlighted moments. You choose what best fits you but there is bad moment for every career that you have to overcome. Hope you pursue nursing and have the courage to take the profession beyond the current level.
Find out for yourself if it's for you. Everyone always has something to say: good and bad. You can't always run away from things because part of the people hate it.
There are also many different types of nursing, so you could find something that best fits you.
Well said. This is everything in a nutshell of what drives me to want to become a nurse one day. Thank you!
2021 now. How right she was about tele medicine
Very insightful, thank you.
I really wanted to like this but good god, it was so boring :/

Stay away if you're doubting it at all.
some places are better than the other, or did I just get lucky to have worked at where people actually care?
I absolutely agree! I’m only an LVN so I’m only making 30 something K after all the stress, grossness, harassment, long hours, nights and weekends.

Very monotone and she wasn't able to relate her story to anyone in the crowd. She isn't an impactful rhetoric.
I am also starting the school of nursing but what I have figure out is that nursing is not about money just about loving people,
Once you are motivated by money this is not the right however it's professional, I loved the way we interact with lot of people, patients and I can help you build humanity in yourself.
Agreed !

Lol. I also am very underwhelmed by her indoctrinated "wisdom"
So, that’s 20 minutes of my life I can’t get back. I’m sure her intent was good, but her delivery was awful.
Your time was not in vain since your comment saved me 20 minuets :)
pdxmomx3 how ??
And I lost 10 minutes
What the heck is this lady talking about. I don't have a clue. In addition, why does one comment after another talk nothing about how stressful the job is? Can this stress be because people today can't handle stress? I am considering becoming and LPN because of the short training and decent pay. I'm 58 and went through divorce after a lifetime homemaker and have a daughter with autism. I do like fast paced environments. I worked as a personal care associate for people with mental disabilities. It was not all fun, like getting thrown up on, however, I enjoyed working with the clients.
I got applied to study nursing last year and i’m loving it. Definitely made the right choice!
Phenomenal Ted Talk, eloquently spoken by an innate storyteller! LOVED IT!
A nurse can become a nurse practitioner which is a form of a doctor and they can prescribe medications and also practice as a psychiatrist.
I loved this ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Did you really? You should join her and live in the forest somewhere.
truebluefoo 😂😂😂😂😂😂👻
Nursing is terrible. Patients are entitled, expect hotel-style service with you as the wait staff. Even that you could get over, since the patients are sick. However, it is the endless demands of administrators and "leaders" who put unreasonable demands on nurses. Forcing us to do more with less. I would tell anyone to NEVER do it. It isn't worth it. It isn't worth the stress, anxiety, nights, weekends, holidays or times with your family!
sounds like you went into nursing for the wrong reasons.
Camille B I’ve wondered what working in that area would be like. I think I’m gonna skip trying it now. Thanks for keeping it real.
