Ahhh.. the late 90's/early 2000's. The true Golden Age of MMA. I remember UFC when there were no weight classes, no gloves, no time limits, and it was a glorious contest of discipline and endurance! Pride kept a little bit of that great tournament tradition, but well... We all know how that turned out.

As a complete novice, I could be wrong, but to my eye it looks like many of these fights are brawls with technique somewhat forgotten in exchange for crazy fist throwing. Am I right, or is strategy hidden in there among the flailing arms?

It's a bunch if bug men recruited for their size. many have little to no striking training, the Sumo guys have none to start with, Sap did football. They can get paid thousands even in their first fight, more as time goes by, plus part of the purse. So yeah, lots of semi to unskilled brawling.

With a camp to pay, living costs, hospital bills racking up there wasn't anything left. So that's when Bob started to give up when he felt he wasn't winning early on.. it wasn't worth it for him. It was strange to actually see Sapp win some. Usually he gets hit twice and collapses into the fetal position.

2:40 Something about fighter is that they never look away when throwing a punch or fighting in general. Bob Sapp you can clearly see throw a jab with his head down against the large white guy.
