  • Replace your worn SL steering coupler from under the hood in a few
hours. No need to fool with the steering column. Remove two coupler
bolts, three steering gear bolts and two pitman arm connections only.

It took me three hours and was very frustrating, job done and steers like new again, thank you for an excellent video!

Thank you for the video. I was dreading the job might require going in through the steering column like some public comments. Just did mine like you did.

Ok, so I just did this on my 85 380 for anyone coming here late. Couple things of note that will help you doing this.
Having a ball end 6mm hex will help if you coupler is back a a bit and ball joint separator is a must.
My coupler didn't want to come off the box side, a small pry bar to help maneuver coupler towards the firewall (don't press the splines). I found it easier to reinstall from the top with small pry to move the box up and out and other hand to push it on.
For sure mark it otherwise you may have to pull it off several times to get it lined up with the ball joints (they have to come off).
Took me around 3 hours multiple readjustments, if I had to do it again I think it could be done in an hour or so.

The passageway of the bolt has an cutout in the joint that prevents the splines from sliding in/out when the bolt is installed, even when not tightened.

I read that these steering shafts can collapse a little. Is it possible to remove the hex bolt on the steering box side first and then tap the coupler back up the shaft and have the shaft retract/collapse enough to make room for the removal?

So the three bolts you're putting in with thread lock at 4:54 is to anchor the steering box. That's why you were able to wiggle it so much when you had them out. Interesting. This job doesn't look that hard to do. Thanks!

Patience and tenacity is the key ingredients to success this job was proof of that.

Hi there, I know this is an old video, but just got around to this job on my 450SLC. I believe it is the same set up. Could you please share where you get your bolts from? I like the box with several sizes. Are they grade 8? Thanks!!

Is it the same for a newer 1997 sl500 r129 chassis?
