3 upgrades Short Cut
1. Lift pump (Fass or air dog)
2. Gauges- EGTs, Transmission Temp, Fuel pressure gauge.
3. Cold air intake and exhaust
You probably want to change out the pressure regulator spring on your FASS. 26-28 psi is a little too much fuel pressure for the VP44. Ideally you want 15-18 psi. Good choice on the FASS though--I bought mine in late 2004 and it's still running beautifully.
A couple other things that these 2nd gen trucks need is:
1. Reroute the crankcase breather tube. The stock breather tube coming out of the timing gear case goes into a catch bottle right in front of the radiator. This cakes up the radiator and intercooler with oily crap, and it's better to extend it to run into the frame rail. If you do much offroading, you can also route it up and back towards the firewall, and down from there. This helps prevent loss of engine oil when you get into severe nose-down conditions on the trail.
2. If you have rear drum brakes, get larger wheel cylinders. You want NAPA part number 37337. *MUCH* better braking. Also make sure your rear brakes are adjusted up good. The self adjusters are notorious for not working.
3. I noticed you don't have the hood blanket--that's common with 2001+ model year trucks. If you can pick one up from an earlier truck at a junkyard, even from a 1500, it'll help keep the hood cooler and also help reduce engine noise a little bit.
Also, you won't have to worry about it since you're in a warm climate, but for those guys in colder climates, get a Smarty programmer, or find someone who is willing to loan it to you. That'll let you update the ECM to enable fast idle and 3-cylinder idle, which are hugely helpful in cold weather conditions.
Great videos, keep 'em coming--and thanks for your service!
AlaskaMike72 I made a mistake when making this video saying I run at 26-27 psi , I didn't realize it until after I posted, I have addressed the mistake in videos since. I run at 18-19 psi. But Good advise man! Thank you for commenting and watching!
ParoDoXz are you sure you weren't mistaken about your egt's? I don't have a Cummins but I'm tuned and I'm over 1200 at the end of the quarter mile. I'm straight piped and deleted, too. I'm at 700 doing 65-70 mph.
im 20 years old and just bought a 2nd gen. I previously had a 6.5 diesel so im familiar with diesels in general i think. But my cummins is definitely a step up. Just got it running cause i had problems with the fuel. But these videos definitely do help alot to new cummins owners!
Great looking truck! Sport bumpers look so good! Love the color to! I own and work/play 3 2nd gens and a 4th gen! 2 are Cummins powered.
Crazy how this was five years ago! I wish I had the knowledge of what you speak of then as much as everything you know now about these trucks! I’m 21 and just got my first 2500 Cummins diesel ram And I am figuring out the beautiful world to all of this! Definitely following along!
Kinda bugs me when people say that people who buy these trucks don't use them for what they are for. People can buy what they want. Just because they aren't towing 15,000 lbs doesn't mean a truck isn't useful
I agree, I have a 2015 Ram that I use to tow my 5th wheel toy hauler and I'm buying a 1999 shortbed 4x4 for my daily and make it a hot rod. I love Cummins diesels.
Haters gonna hate. They're just mad they cant afford it.
Nick Esposito Lmfao anyone can buy anything with 80 month loans. Stupid ass comment.
@@Countryboy2206 Weak credit don't buy shit so not everybody. Stupid comment.
@@Countryboy2206 imagine being that cringe
Ball joints are another big thing on these trucks! I worked in an auto shop for 2 years, and almost every dodge truck that came in had bad ball joints. Including my 03 that I bought 8 months ago, I went with dynatrac's, heard great things about them, and so far so good! Carli ball joints are a great option as well! Definitely worth upgrading for anyone running factory ball joints.

How many miles were you at?
Love your truck brother I’m a Cummins member of the family been Cummins my entire adult life I like the way she sits got a nice posture I’m loving it brother keep on Truckin

Michael Hatcher Nice man! Good luck on the build and thank you for watching!
I love your videos! Very informative. I want to buy a cummins eventually this coming year
ToadNumber55 Thanks man! And they are great trucks!
Turbo silencer ring a new intake filter I did k and n and it lowered my egts by about 30 to 40 degrees. Along with stripping the baffling out of your intake tube
Damn that truck is so clean.. always saying you appreciate us watching but I'd like to thank you for making these detailed videos, keep it up bro!
Thanks man, that means a lot. And i will for sure, I like making these videos, Its a lot of fun!
I Love You're Truck!! I Like The Upgrades You Did On The Truck I Like The 1st And 2nd Gen Cummins The 12 Valve 5.9 L is My Favorite Engine
Thanks man! And you have good taste hah
Great video ... clear and concise! Liked !! ...
Great job hiding that lift pump! Looks a lot better that way in my opinion
Truck Master Me too! Thanks for watching!
Hey my name is Jordan and I have an NV4500HD in mine. I was wondering if I should still get the transmission temp gauge for it? Your videos are really helpful. I just got my first Cummins a couple months ago. 98.5.
Hey man! Love the videos. have a question. would I be fine with a full pump and sump with some gauges and not really any other upgrades for reliability? Im looing at the same truck you have but with 128k miles
Beautiful truck bro good luck with it!
I can't believe what great shape your 2001 is! My 2001 sport rusted all to hell!! I do live in NY where our roads are salted, but still. Very nice truck!!
Thanks bro! Sorry to hear about your truck, unfortunately I hear that a lot about trucks up north
ParoDoXz It's awful, you literary can't have anything nice!
I’ve been trying to find the same exact diamond eye 5” setup you have with the black tip but cant find it anywhere, i also read that the stainless steel version of the pipe is way better than the aluminized, whats your experience? Also the fass lift pump that i find are either 165 or 140 not 150 which one should i get the truck is bone stock but will be doing all the mods you mentioned minus the lift and tires also will be doing arp studs not because i will increase hp but just as a precaution THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!
My first mod was fass. Then stage 5 suncoast transmission. Pump conversion coming.
Hey man love the videos did when you put your fass on did you go with a sump or did you just hook up to the stock port in the tank
Killer dowel pin kit is a must, especially for ones with a lot of miles. Oh and great video, keep it up!!!
Polishkid88 Thank you for the comment and the support on the video!
Good info... looking at my next vehicle to be a ram 2500 2015+, but first got to get the new house. keep up the good videos
Mike Thank you! I appreciate you watching and good luck with the house and truck!
#1 silencer ring. But you wouldn't know that considering you still haven't taken it out.
ParoDoXz lol
was the first thing i did to my 91 12v just about to roll over the 150,000 original kms mark
First thing i did with my 24v
That and intake tube baffles
@@morganbrelin868 what is this? What is the purpose, is there tutorials?
Good video! Getting a manual 06 cummins crew cab long box in less than a week! Southern truck with no rust I can't wait!
Awesome! Congrats!
I’m hoping you undercoated it if you live up north. Not saying you need to but it does help keep it from rusting as dodges do.
Love the videos man keep up the great work!
Steady Studios Thanks bro! You know I will haha
ParoDoXz good bro. Much luck. See ya next video!!
What paint color is that? It’s beautiful!
That's definitely Schofield Barracks in the background! I'd guess AMR or HMR?!? Thanks for the advice brother. I have a 98 2500 V10, your videos are excellent!
Nick Copulos Haha it’s from when I lived on HMR, thanks for watching man!
Love your truck, you should make some in cab videos of you riding around
DownHillgamer Thanks man! And I have a lot on my channel already, and I will be making more, some videos I just like to be able to walk around and talk about the stuff
Good job on gages, I agree with them as a very first upgrade. Disagree on electric lift pumps, mechanical one last forever
I'd say the electronic lift pump is worth it just for the filtration
Yes I have airdogg and have had loss of fuel pressure because of a relay or fuse I would recommend fass over airdog
Sorry to hear about your problems with it man, Some people swear by the birddog but I always recommend the FASS
you deserve a million subscribers, i love your channel man!!!
jesse thompson I wish haha but thanks bro! Maybe one day!
You make some good beginner points. But vp44 trucks do not suck. They just need the factory lift pump replaced as you mentioned and then they're fine for the most part. They can make good power and the shift on the fly tuning is nice. Not everyone can drive around in a smoky pig 12V all the time. I like being able to turn mine down when the cops are behind me.
jfdb59 I agree man, thanks for watching!
I love this truck ❤️🚗💨
great vids man keep it up
Tyler Thomas Thanks bro! I will!
Did you have to remove the spare tire to fit the 5in exhaust?
Me and my wife are bringing our 1st gen and 4th gen to Oahu, can we get away with having wide wheels, straight pipes and lifts? I know there’s inspections and recon laws there so I wanted to know if you had any tips?
Has anyone ever added a warning light in concert with the temperature gauge or do dodge drivers just know to stare at the gauges and glance now and then at the road?
One of the first upgrades on a second gen 24v cummins i believe along with the lift pump should be the killer dowel pin, because that will be just as costly as a vp44. by the way looks like you are missing a cab mount bolt on the back right.....
Diesel1500 I hear that the killer dowel pin is more important to do on the 12v but I could be mistaken. And yeah I am haha previous owner must have scrapped it
One of the cleanest second gens I've seen. Nice truck man
Thanks bro, I really appreciate that. I appreciate you watching the video too
ParoDoXz no problem man, first saw the "5 things I hate about my cummins" vid. Been watching since then. I've been looking for a nice 6 speed second gen in my area but they're all beat up or have crazy high mileage
Vanquisher Nice man, thanks for watching for that long. I hate how that video turned out, but it is what it is I guess. Wish I could re-do it. But good luck with finding one Man! Took me 2 years
i have the same fast set up never have had a problem with it on my 2006 dodge dually with the 5.9
Kori Whitchurch Nice man
I’m thinking about buying me one. Is it worth it for the mpg? What is your mpg?
Could you put links to these things in the description?
What do you think about K&N intake? Snorkel?
when i was almost 17 i bought my first truck, 94 sclb 12v cummins loved the thing. Workin sense i was 13 on a farm pays off. Still workin there 5 years later. I got auto meter gauges 66mm turbo and 150 sticks for it along with the studs, 165 valve springs, Hamilton pushrods and all that shit. Was going to put an exhaust break on it hense the heavy ass springs. Don't ever sell it, i sold mine because of schooling (4.10 gears are slow as hell) and i miss it a ton...
2shotsgaming Nice man, and I don't plan on selling it bro. Thanks for watching , sounds like you had one hell of a truck
yeah man, love the update vids, getting a semi built 1st gen in the next few weeks and the build on that will begin!
Lol
freaking awesome truck
What kind of rims do you have on your truck?
How did you get the black between the doors? Did you paint it or buy a piece for it?
Great Video. Thanks!!!
ParoDoxz, I was watching your injector video and was curious how you like the idle qualities of your sac injectors. How smokey are they compared to the stock ones?
I have early 60 HP injectors (12 years old now) which have been awesome for mileage and a little extra power, and they're very clean too. However, I'm looking for a new set to make more power and was looking at DAP or DFI 7x.010 vco or sac.
Just curious about your experience with the sac type injectors.
Thanks for watching my videos man! And I havent started the truck up yet, I will start it for the first time today and that video will be uploaded in a couple days! So we will see haha
Is your gauge install video not available anymore?
Nice pickup man she’s clean.
Can I get a list of these first things you would do in order?
what would the estimated price be for all of these upgrades?
Sweet truck man! Just bought an 06 megacab and don’t know where to start upgrading. Good ideas though.
Greg Sandberg have you done any upgrades yet?
Holy shit! That's Clean!!!
Hey what about the turbo temp?
The silver sport is my favorite of all. I searched and searched for a 6 speed silver sport. Impossible to find.
Love your truck man. The only ram owner who isn't pulling a ghost trailer. lol
I like Ma truck Haha so true! My brother doesn't either though so I guess he's cool too lol thanks for watching man
I keep my mirrors down also.
Love the truck man, but I must confess... when you opened the door and I seen that it was an automatic, I was disappointed.
John Thanks bro, and I know. I wanted a Manuel but I didn't have much of a choice here in Hawaii. Literally this is the only one to pop up for sale for 2 years on this island
Nobody ditches sticks anymore and when they do they never wanna bargain .....sorry bro but your 400k diesel from the day I was born isn't 15 or 20k unless it's a sema bulletproof build that shit is 5 to 8 grand max
ParoDoXz swap it
@Kyle 90k miles.... jesus that truck was garage kept for its life no doubt also. My 95 has 280k, and that’s (relatively) low amongst 5.9s.
For those of us that have older 12 valve trucks the killer dowel pin will need to be addressed as well as the charging system if the voltage regulator goes out in the computer. Also a quart of oil in the fuel tank helps keep everything lubed with the low sulfur fuel.
Justin Hagen Good tip . Thanks for watching and commenting man
ParoDoXz no problem. I have been in and out of the 89-93 Cummins trucks. I haven't dealt much with the 94-02 trucks.
You don't want to use motor oil in the fuel.. every farmer, old timer and trucker I know uses 3oz ATF ( automatic transmission fluid) per 30 gallons.. after 30yrs they all swear by it.
what percentage tint does your truck have
just pick up an 2003 2500 6 speed crew cab with the 5.9 cummins ...first diesel truck and I don't if I got a good deal...paid 6k for it.
I’m probably getting a 7.3 idi but I also kinda want a Cummins
Do you need a lift to run those tires/wheels on stock height
what size injectors u running?
What size tire and rims do you uave
Hey nice rims and tires ,what brand and size ?
nice vid. just want you to know that anything over 20 (fuel pressure) will rupture the diaphragm in the vp 44
tyler gess Yeah I have to look into that, someone else commented that yesterday. It does go to 18-20 most the time though. Anyway I can turn it down?
It should have an adjustment screw. mine has a lock nut and at flat head screw
tyler gess I'll try and find it man, thanks
love your truck i cant wait to get my second gen
Matthew Hoffmann Thanks bro! They are a lot of fun!
What happened to the isspro gauge install?
Yo they're selling me a 5.9 cummins for 6.5k cash with automatic transmission belts, ecm. Wiring harness and computer. It's from a 2003 What should I do to it if I buy it. To rebuild it.? Maybe new injectors ? Intake? Up grade turbo ? Spark plugs ?
Prolly won't see this lol 2 years later. But where did you find those headlights?
nice truck!
Nice video well explained and the camera quality/voice is good too! I have a 14' crew cab cummins. I installed a turbo back exhaust and the raceme ultra tuner. Anything else you recommend? I'm limited with rim/tire size without a lift. It has the factory 20" rims/tires on it.
Troy M Thanks man! I appreciate you checking the video out! And I'm not to experience with 4th gens but Thoroughbread diesel is very good and you can call them and ask them what is best to upgrade on your truck (as far as performance/longevity wise) I trust them
Troy M cold air intake with your tunner if not you'll melt your turbo why I said cold air intake so the turbo gets more air "trust me I'm a mechanic" lol
your channel will grow for sure
Angel Mar I hope so! I love making these videos
I'd recommend a manual trans 1st
Foreal i was gonna buy a auto and everyone told me to buy a manual haha
@@jacksonross3533 thats because with these, they burn through auto's
@Kyle i’m saying stock autos, of course a built trans will hold up to it
I got a 98 ram 1500 and the first thing we had to fix was the transmission so yeah I would buy a manual
women drive automatics
FASS Is without a doubt number one take it from somebody Who replaced the stock lift pump after it was TSV and the TSB Had problems. FASS remedied all the problems that the previous generation of lift pumps problems had. I am not a paid sponsor but a second GEN Enthusiast and FASS cured my acceleration lag
Dude can you tell me how to bolt on anymore stuff I can order offline . I just want to wire up stuff and bolt on shit.
is your truck a slt or a sport model
Love the truck. Anyone know what lift he has on it 4" or 5"
The word is pertain, not retain. I mean that to be costructive. Good video.
awesome truck
I have the exact same truck just got it 2 weeks ago. 191K Miles 2001 24 Valve.
iYung Trill nice man!
What bumper and head lights are you running and how was the installation?
I also want to know .
your exhaust sounds crisp
Crystal Clear Thanks man! I appreciate you watching the video!
ever heard of moving the lift pump into the tank? just bought a 99 24v and thats what the previous owner did. lmk
Jesse Bozich I personally haven't man, not on these trucks and not with a FASS or Airdog but that doesn't mean it's wrong, I've just personally never seen it done
What percent window tint is on it?
Where did you get that bumper ? On the second gen
hey bud 18psi is max recommended pressure for the vp44 you need to adjust your fass
thatguy I know, I've addressed my mistake since this video in other videos and show that I run at 18 psi. I wasn't paying attention and accidentally said 26 or whatever I said haha
great video
I love your truck very nice can't wait till I can get my license and hey maybe even get a duckit sticker
Thanks man! And heck yeah, the sticker really does like nice, like honesty get asked every day throughout Hawaii about it
that's right man I'm Louisiana folk lol
Not a Ram guy but I love your Cummins
Duramax Pat Thanks man! I appreciate you watching the video!
would a bully dog tuner be a good choice over the gages you have on that column. the tuner has EGT's and boost gage there just digital so is that a good choice?
I see some people do that and they say it works fine. You definitely need the Trans temp and fuel pressure as well though. I have a Edge CTS 2 though which I'm about to post a video of here in the next day or so
So hard to find one that’s not completely beat.. 350 or 400 in the motor
What does "-44 off set" mean?
Your truck is awesome
How much cost you to get the fass??
