6.7L Ford Powerstroke CP4 Injection Pump Failure #1 Diagnosis

  • This is the first of two back-to-back failures we recently saw on the 2011-2017 6.7L Ford Powerstroke Bosch CP4.2 high pressure injection pump. Initial analysis points to water in the fuel, as the Fuel Press Control Valve (FPCV) and Fuel Volume Control Valve (FVCV) were both heavily rusted. This water contamination resulted in catastrophic failure of the high pressure injection pump due to the water's displacement of the diesel fuel which provides the lubrication and cooling of the pumps cam and rollers located within the pump crankcase. Due to a design flaw from Ford, this debris from the pump's crankcase was then sent to the high pressure side of the pump, subsequently pressurized, and sent out the the fuel rails, all eight injectors, the return lines, fuel cooler and back to the tank before it was eventually drawn back through the primary filter within the Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module (DFCM) and the engine mounted secondary filter. The end result was complete destruction of the high pressure fuel system resulting in a repair bill nearing $9,000!
The Scorpion CP4 Disaster Prevention Kit would have prevented the contamination of the fuel rails and injections, by diverting the debris from the failing cam and rollers directly back to the tank, instead of the inlet to the high pressure pump, thereby saving everything downstream of the injection pump and a whole lot of $$$. Look for our other video containing the innovative and relatively cheap insurance for your 6.7L Powerstroke.
It is our further belief that a FASS fuel/water seperator would greatly prolong the life of the stock CP4 pump by continually filtering out water, dirt and air from the fuel, thereby delivering the highest quality fuel for this application. Also look for our video containing this relatively cheap upgrade for your 6.7L Powerstroke's fuel system that will help your investment last longer with less downtime and expense.
    Thanks for watching!

I have a 2014 with the CP4 fuel pump. When I bought the truck I knew about the issues the CP4 fuel pump. I would change my fuel filter at no more than 15k miles and usually ever oil change. I also had selected stations I would buy diesel from. When on the road I only used Pilot or Loves truck stops and would plan my stops accordingly. On top of that I put Ford diesel treatment in at every fill up. When I hear people talk about lack of maintenance causing these fuel pump failures I boil over. There was nothing more I could have done to prevent the two fuel pump failures and complete fuel system replacements in 3 years I have had. The pump has a know design flaw with the plunger/roller turning in the sleeve that no maintenance will prevent. Ram used the CP4 in 2019 to 2021 and recognized the problem and has issue a recall in Jan 2022 to replace the CP4 with the CP3. When will Ford step up, do what right and follow suit.

So if you have the same codes and also a passenger side low pressure code, pull the cp4 regulator and don't see a single metal shaving, what else would cause it to have no pressure? I've changed both filters and the regulator on drivers fuel rail but still have a no start with what sounds almost like a grinding sound. It also literally stops the starter and sounds like it's binding. It ran fine before and just suddenly acted up.

So my 2016 deleted powerstroke is popping up p2269(water in fuel) and p0087 (fuel rail press too low). I have religiously changed fuel filters, and use good fuel and archoil every fillup. I have the “drain fuel filter” message on my dash still, even though i drained the water (there was a lot) and ordered a new water sensor. Im really hoping i didnt frag my cp4. I may be being paranoid, but im not sure what happens when the cp4 fails. My truck still runs fine, until you romp on it, it triggers the CEL. Would a failed cp4 still allow the truck to run perfectly fine? No noises or anything either. going to order fuel filters tmoro as well as try and check my MPROP for shavings, but id sleep a lot better ruling out a failed cp4. Thanks!!

Great video and very informative. The problem this truck has, do you think it's because of how he took care of his truck caused this or is this something that can happen to someone like me who is ALWAYS ON TOP of his engine? I change my filters when it's time and I don't hot rod my rig or abuse it. As far as you can tell, does this truck owner take care of his rig? I bought brand new back in 2011 a ford f250 4×4 6.7L and its my first diesel and I gotta tell you, it makes me nervous wherever a service engine light kicks on. I'm a muscle car guy and I've built my own engines but this diesel world it's another ball game and what really worries me isn't working on it but the price for parts. Like the truck in your video, if that happened to me I could fix it with no problem but I too would have to sale mine because I wouldn't have the 2 to 5 grand or more to fix it. Take care and God bless. Thumbs up on your video bud.

Thank you for your comments sir! The owner of this 2014 bought the truck used and it was previously deleted and tuned. There was evidence of water in the fuel pressure regulator due to excessive rust. However, we had another 2013 which was a company/personal vehicle that was meticulously maintained with NO evidence of any previous water contamination. It is possible that one bad tank of fuel had excessive emulsified water that overran the capability of the stock filtration system and ruined the pump. I would use a high quality fuel additive with a lubricity enhancer and water treatment with every tank.

Ozark Diesel & Off Road deleted and tuned. Say no more. Folks buy these trucks and then immediately try to out engineer the engineer. Hardly ever works out and it’s expensive. Just maintain them properly and don’t abuse them and they will last. My last one was a 2006 6.0 traded it with 280,000 miles on it. Ran like a top. Never tuned or molded except for some minor mods like coolant and oil bypass filter and the like. Had riser pipes and injectors done and egr cooler. I backflush Ed the oil cooler annually and flushed coolant, ran synthetic oil, serviced transmission every 30k. Never gave me any issues. Now I have a 2020 f350 dually. Running synthetic oil changing every 6000 miles, factory air filter, no tuner, fuel filters every 15k just like my last one. I suspect this truck will also last for many trouble free years.

:( water in fuel. sucks. Gotta stay on top of fuel filter and there should be a dash light that comes on for that. A lot of diesel fuel filters have a water in fuel sensor. That needs to be changed on an interval and if the light comes of the engine needs to be cut off immediately after turbo has a moment to slow down.

Does the truck start and run at all? Did you replace EVERYTHING with the contamination kit from Ford? If not, the injectors, the injector return line, all high pressure lines, and both fuel rails with all sensors MUST be replaced. Did you flush the system with new fuel from a clean/new tank prior to removing the old engine components? You won't get all of the debris out, but it is a start. Did you flush the system with the new fuel and the new components in place with the return line disconnected from the tank to verify a complete flush? Ford does not specifically say to replace the low pressure lift pump or the fuel cooler on the return line, but it is highly advisable to do so. With a scan tool, can you see the difference in actual vs desired fuel pressure?

The general consensus is lack of lubrication from ULSD. Other contributing factors include fuel contaminated with air, water or dirt. The pump has two lobes and two roller bearings located on a "bucket" or follower. If the buckets are upset, they will rotate in their bore and in turn cause the roller to be at a right angle to the cam lobe and cause rapid destructive wear.

Anyone read where the CP4 was meant for European diesel fuel which has more lubricant in it? But due to cost issues to put in the more expensive American fuel pump, Ford put in the European one. The diesel in the US has less lubricant causing these catastrophic failures. Recommended that you put lubricant additive in EVERY time you fuel if you have this specific pump.
