6.7L Ford Powerstroke CP4 Injection Pump Failure #2 Disassembled
Переглядів 16 тис.6 років тому
This is the second of two back-to-back failures we recently saw on the 2011-2017 6.7L Ford Powerstroke Bosch CP4.2 high pressure injection pump. Inspection of the fuel system and analysis did not indicate water in the fuel since both the Fuel Press Control Valve (FPCV) and Fuel Volume Control Valve (FVCV) had zero evidence of rust. However, this still appears to be caused by lack of lubrication...

This is the first of two back-to-back failures we recently saw on the 2011-2017 6.7L Ford Powerstroke Bosch CP4.2 high pressure injection pump. Initial analysis points to water in the fuel, as the Fuel Press Control Valve (FPCV) and Fuel Volume Control Valve (FVCV) were both heavily rusted. So if you have the same codes and also a passenger side low pressure code, pull the cp4 regulator and don't see a single metal shaving, what else would cause it to have no pressure? I've changed both filters and the regulator on drivers fuel rail but still have a no start with what sounds almost like a grinding sound. It also literally stops the starter and sounds like it's binding. It ran fine before and just suddenly acted up.

The general consensus is lack of lubrication from ULSD. Other contributing factors include fuel contaminated with air, water or dirt. The pump has two lobes and two roller bearings located on a "bucket" or follower. If the buckets are upset, they will rotate in their bore and in turn cause the roller to be at a right angle to the cam lobe and cause rapid destructive wear.

I have a 2014 with the CP4 fuel pump. When I bought the truck I knew about the issues the CP4 fuel pump. I would change my fuel filter at no more than 15k miles and usually ever oil change. I also had selected stations I would buy diesel from. When on the road I only used Pilot or Loves truck stops and would plan my stops accordingly. On top of that I put Ford diesel treatment in at every fill up. When I hear people talk about lack of maintenance causing these fuel pump failures I boil over. There was nothing more I could have done to prevent the two fuel pump failures and complete fuel system replacements in 3 years I have had. The pump has a know design flaw with the plunger/roller turning in the sleeve that no maintenance will prevent. Ram used the CP4 in 2019 to 2021 and recognized the problem and has issue a recall in Jan 2022 to replace the CP4 with the CP3. When will Ford step up, do what right and follow suit.

Ok, I got a 6.7l in the shop with a pump leaking from the left pump head. It was staying in a continual loop of pulling in air and pushing out diesel. Got the heads off and saw just bad orings so I got a seal kit for it. The rollers and cam are spotless, but what I'm wondering is how you pulled that front cover. Did you slide hammer the pump shaft and pull the cover that way?

    • @ozarkdieseloffroad567

Does the truck start and run at all? Did you replace EVERYTHING with the contamination kit from Ford? If not, the injectors, the injector return line, all high pressure lines, and both fuel rails with all sensors MUST be replaced. Did you flush the system with new fuel from a clean/new tank prior to removing the old engine components? You won't get all of the debris out, but it is a start. Did you flush the system with the new fuel and the new components in place with the return line disconnected from the tank to verify a complete flush? Ford does not specifically say to replace the low pressure lift pump or the fuel cooler on the return line, but it is highly advisable to do so. With a scan tool, can you see the difference in actual vs desired fuel pressure?
