i love l4d i treat it like an arcade game where you just drop in, kill zombies, check the time before work, and just bounce no hard feelings on anyone and you (hopefully) contributed towards the campaign and i love how someone can just drop in as soon as you drop out like a substitute not really disrupting the zombie killing experience.
That's the best part of Left 4 Dead, I think. You can drop in and out seamlessly and there's no problem whatsoever. No waiting to sync between players, no true downside to having or not having coop teammates, no difficulty to catch up if you join the server. Left 4 Dead is the best multiplayer coop game I've ever played.
it also has the atmoshpere far superior to modern titles, no perks, no crafting, none of that cluttered mechanical garbage, you just enjoy it for it's engaging gameplay
This is why I loved it too. It was easy to drop into any part of the game you wanted, there was minimal set up (if playing co-op), it was simple enough that no matter where you were if your buddy walked in you could give them a controller and they’d already know what they’re doing. So easy to pick up, pass around, or put down when ever you wanted. When I saw the live-service aspects, progression and rpg elements for B4B it immediately fell off my radar
Hey there; I am one of the devs for Codename CURE, and clicked the video solely to comment "Codename CURE is a good example", only to pleasantly find that it's actually *in* the video, so that's awesome haha Just to address some things that got brought up; the zombies are actually repurposed zombine entities. Their models are based off the citizen animations, but manually re-targeted and re-animated by me. They are way more flexible than CS bots as a result, being able to be spawned independently, with far more advanced locomotion options, being able to jump up and down heights, be affected by scripts, and more. There's some servers that take full advantage of that in order to create custom bosses and zombie types, it's so nuts. It also initially was actually a custom Counter Strike Source mod in the very beginning if I remember right, but then it became a Source Mod afterwards, which was when I got involved. We also made sure it had a huge focus on modding, making custom gamemodes and everything work entirely through hammer entities with no external scripting required in order to make completely custom gamemodes with ease. It's honestly pretty awesome and although a lot of the art assets were gamebanana asset flips (Most of the props were added before I joined the team and I simply repurposed or updated a majority of them), it's honestly a great little game. We made a new game that wasn't actually stinky called Gemini: Binary Conflict and I recommend buying it and checking it out if you have the chance, we're proud of it and it's made 100% from scratch by us, but if I'm honest I kinda want to make a Codename CURE 2 at this point, and make sure that it is really good lol The Halo maps you see were made by my good friend Kaleidescoop; they're unbelievably talented and I'm so proud of all the work they put into their workshop maps. They make a bunch of crazy maps for Garry's Mod, too, as well as a TF2 one that might become official soon from what I can tell. I love 'em, they're great :) All-in-all it's always awesome seeing people talk about it; it genuinely isn't the best game in the world but I wasn't even an adult yet when I worked on it and all things considered it did come out great for what it is. It's a bummer you didn't talk about the Survival mode or the custom gamemodes or the PvP mode, but, if I'm honest, they aren't exactly that popular anyway :p
Codename Cure holds a special place in my heart. I had a laptop with a really bad graphics card and little to no ram, and I didn't have any money for Left 4 Dead 2 at the time. So, I played Codename Cure a lot, hoping for the day I could get Left 4 Dead 2 and a computer that can run it. And now I have both, still a great game with such a cool community with a Workshop that doesn't stop growing to give us replay value.
I really loved Codename Cure too but mostly because I prefered the "special forces vs zombies" thing that it has going on. I realize people really love L4D's setup of "a bunch of rando's vs zombies" but I don't and never did. Still a top tier game, tho. But I would have liked it better playing as a special forces tac team with designated roles.
Valve only makes games in two conditions: - to showcase a product or service (Alyx with VR, Aperture Desk Job with the Steam Deck) - to pioneer a new technology (Half-Life with physics and character animations, L4D with intelligent adaptation to the players actions)
I mean source 2 is finally up and running We can finally expect another valve game Weird how it took them almost 12yrs to develop source 2 While chad old valve developed source alongside Half-life 2 in 5 yrs
the crazy thing about back 4 blood is that despite all the marketing implying the creators were the same people that created l4d, but when you really dig in you find that it's basically just a few people who did some work on l4d, not directors, leads, producers, nothing, which isn't to say individual devs aren't important, but they're very much not the Creators- it'd be like a guy who held the boom mic on star wars making a movie and saying FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU STAR WAR yknow. deceitful imo
Fr like they were making such a big hype about it like sure yea you two made mod and concept but didn’t really work on the whole product game itself basically like the kid who makes the idea for a class project and then tries to take ALL the credit for the work even tho they also did little to not much compared to the rest of the group not trying to discredit them cause without showing the main valve man the mod on counter strike, left 4 dead wouldn’t have potentially existed but at the same time like that whole mod is a minor aspect of saying “hey ya know left 4 dead? Yea I made that game and im gonna make the next big thing like it” then goes out disappoint everyone and everything.
Was the first thing I thought when he said "by the guys who invented Left 4 Dead". Crowbcat's video did a lot of heavy lifting bringing the reasons why B4B fell short to the masses but I had already lost interest in the game when they first announced it and showed it was made by the same people who did Evolve.
It’s funny tbh mostly cause even from the trailers you could tell it was nothing like left 4 dead even surprised they haven’t got a lawsuit yet as valve I would t want that shit stain associated at all with left 4 dead
Even if it sucked because of the ridiculous monetization (plus Valve community expecting anything not CSGO or Dota), part of it was still missed by the community. Even now the Dota 2 community is drawing characters from that forgotten game for new hero/item/lore/gameplay ideas What it was back then definitely won't be missed though
@@TheUltimyrArchives Man the Card games community certainly miss that game Both Artifact Classic and Artifact Foundary are free 2 play Valve wanted same success for this game as with CSGO and DOTA 2 They should have know it's a niche community that plays card games And continue updating it according to that Valve even started reviving the game and hyped it up but canceled Artifact Foundry eventually coz according to them it wasnt profitable for them And just released both games for free If they made Artifact a Mobile game it would have been much popular
Only game that is similar to Left 4 Dead that I truly enjoy and still play often would be something like Vermintide 2. The unique cast of characters are so fun to be around, the map and level design is straightforward and the melee combat is extremely satisfying. Few different races that show up that all have different elites and specials and some bosses with Monsters that can show up. Truly enjoyable
As far as being the most zombie-like, I'd lean more towards Darktide than Vermintide. The Nurgle cultists legitimately look like an undead horde while Vermintide's Nurgle worshippers are just heavily diseased.
Vermintide 2 is great and definitely takes influence from L4D, but I wouldn't call it a clone. It's got more of a focus on melee combat, and the different enemy types all behave differently down to even the basic mooks like Clanrats and Marauders.
@@Scarfy397 the gameplay and structure is absolutely a clone, the game wouldn't exist if L4D didn't...aesthetic, and focusing more on melee combat and adding some diff enemy types is pure semantics and just seasoning
I will say for Left 2 Die, it does have [DISCONTINUED] in its name. Roblox loves pushing updates that severely break their older games that force creators to go and fix hella stuff. I remember playing Left 2 Die back in like 2020 or so. It was alright, but updates have FUBAR'd that game like a lot of their others.
Yeah, L2D is honestly pretty good, it's just unfinished, which isn't exactly something bad. The criticisms towards it sounded like the complaints people had about the GTA 6 leaks looking unfinished. In fact, L2D is decently well known by L4D players, and it's level design translates quite nicely into L4D. The devs' other game also shows that they are rather talented and know how to make a solid, fun game with interesting concepts and themes, they just need the passion and drive to do so.
OR reason 2 die! (if you remember this game you're an legend) its a game made in Roblox in 2014 that was so popular to be featured in a roblox event ,which its own concept is similiar to l4d2 but its like not 4v4 but just entire server vs the few nitpicked people to become the special infected and infect others by killing them. Sadly the game's discontinued cause they stopped developing for...some reason? and also the creator of the game is also controversial for forcing religions/homophobic and banned on roblox.( you cant really play the game anymore cause its privated and now an entire baseplate. But you can try reason 2 die classic edition the fan game.)
In all fairness to the anacrusis it’s still in very active development with versus coming out soon and them having community play tests every week. Also when the games done I’m sure the story and characters will be fleshed out
The thing about back for blood, is it hailed itself as being “by the creators of left for dead” but in reality, it’s like if a few janitors from apple started a phone company and said “from the creators of the iphone!” All the actual important leads and project managers weren’t onboard for B4B, and you were left with essentially just some lackies that happened to work on L4D in some capacity at some point in their career.
The thing about Valve's history is that it shows they're willing to get _extremely experimental_ (turning Team Fortress' sequel into a weird narrative-driven game, trying to make a Portal 2 without portals, making a Half-Life game with randomly-generated environments, etc), but that they also know what experiments end up not working and thus they don't release them. Valve's proven with both all their Team Fortress and Half-Life 3 experiments (as they described in Half-Life Alyx: The Final Hours) that they'll spend (waste?) a lot of time trying to reinvent the wheel when they probably don't need to, but that they won't release anything until they get it just right. That's why those old Left4dead 3 leaks don't concern me; they're honestly not as weird as trying Portal 2 without portals - those leaks are just stepping stones, and every game has them. And, to my mind, Alyx proves they still know what they're doing. It's the perfect blend of what makes Half-Life work, along with the technical innovations and the smarts of how to use them to curate an accessible, thought-out game. Give Valve the time they need, and if a Left4dead 3 is truly worthwhile, we will get a good Left4dead 3.
For me, the games that come the closest to capturing the spirit and fun of L4D are the Warhammer Vermintide games and World War Z. Vermintide 2 is especially great at being a successor to L4D while also having a unique spin on it, with an emphasis on close-quarters melee combat and skills. It also has a pretty fun roguelite/randomizer mode.
I agree, to me World War Z aftermath is an across the board good game. L4D2 clone, but enjoyably and creatively reinterpreted with its own slew of changes and innovations. It's just good fun, you know.
I would say if you like Vermintide and Vermintide 2, then Darktide is also a good choice here, i know pots of people have their complaints about it, but the gameplay is incredible and it feels so fun to play, definitely captures the feeling of Left for Dead but elevated in gameplay
@@nikolachiara9285 I have played Darktide, and I agree that it's great. The initial launch did turn me off from playing it more, but I have been following its updates and am hopeful that it bounces back.
@@y1751Fr dude, it has soooo many different play styles. And the melee combat is 10/10. Darktide can’t even compare to vermintide 2. Now that I think about it, Darktide is the back 4 blood of the warhammer series
@@FunkelMcStump best description for it, hyped up as the big “sequel” or spiritual successor in a way and failed miserably because developers lost what made it good in the first place. Hope they fix Farttide one day, the core gameplay was solid.
A game that adopts the L4D formula and scratches that itch for me is Darktide. It's got its own premise going on, but surprisingly it works and its fresh. Got some similar enemy types even, unique classes, and beautiful environments. It's a blast. Rough launch, but its gotten smoother.
@@R3TR0J4N I played in both major betas (Vermintide 2 and Darktide), and the bugs aren't terribly bothersome. Plus, with the class trees in Darktide overhauled, you can really make your convict(s) your own now, especially with perks that change your abilities.
Fun Fact: Tuttle Rock only had 4 employees workt on l4d and the majority of people were Valve employees so tr did make the concept but valve were the ones who made l4d iconic
Surpass or equal? No. Vermintide is a solid game but it's just a rehash of L4D with a Victorian theme. Each class has a single viable build (all others are unusable trash), and most players would quit it after 100 hrs as there is little replayability. Good attempt, but no. I'm surprised it's not mentioned in the video though. Also, where is versus?
L4D3 was left to die due to some engine disputes (One side wanted to make it on Unreal and another wanted to do it on unity or some shit) but the end goal was to eventually move it all back to Source 2 when the engine was capable of handling a regular FPS game that's why partly they ended up working on Alyx to continue building up the engine. L4D3 after CSGO Source 2?? uoohhhh 😭😭😭😭
Bro you’re intros are my favorite, id imagine you got most of the inspiration from adult swim and dude it works. I click on every video waiting to see what crazy ass intro its gonna have. Keep up the good work brother
His review of it feels like he was huffing the car paint when writing it: no mention of unique items added, such as the time distortion bombs or turrets. While the base weapons feel lackluster, he doesn't mention that weapons you pick up can have unique upgrades that change how the weapons work; his criticism seems odd because psychedelic colors and round objects/buildings in the levels clash with the spikey, dark aliens so that they don't melt into the background and create contrast, no mention of the character upgrade system, and no mention that although very, very nascent it's possible to mod the game. If a game review is meant to give a viewer an idea of the gameplay loop and their opinion about it, then he failed at it and just gave his opinion without giving sufficient reason on why.
@@prog8454Honestly the game looks too weird to even care about any of what you mentioned, I don't mean to be rude in saying that, but that was my first reaction to seeing the game, and I'm sure it was for many others. All the weird color and designs, and characters that look more like Diversity check marks than characters some people genuinely wanted to create, it's just off-putting at the least.
I personally love the Vermintide series and I believe it's as close a game could come to being a direct rip on the L4D formula but with RPG elements tacked on. Even then it's pretty apples to oranges as Vermintide's emphasis lies in it's melee combat rather than ranged options (although they are there and mainly used for handling special spawns).
@@DezZzO_YT if your good enoght you can go full Gun only Bounty Hunter up to legend.Cataclism ? well not so much. it's a meme strat but if your good at doging you can get all the green circles (exept melee kills) i hate it cuz my mate mains bounty hunter and he usualy get's like 50 melee kills out of his 400/500 total on cata and has Most kills and most damage delt
@@oliwer23pl95 issue with Bounty Hunter is that you will need to use melee just as a source of THP regen and in the hands of advanced players also to utilize some specific traits on melee that could benefit ranged combat. Plus, you're not going to survive long on BH without blocking too. Also BH scales way above regular Cataclysm and can be somewhat solid on some harder content, but he's never going to work ranged only outside of a very experienced party with good positioning.
Wow, this video perfectly captures the frustration and longing for a true Left 4 Dead sequel. It's clear that people have a deep love for the franchise, and it's a shame that many of the attempts to replicate its success have fallen short. From Code Name Cure to Back 4 Blood, it's disappointing to see how these games failed to capture the essence and magic of Left 4 Dead. The analysis of each clone's shortcomings and the comparison to the original game's strengths really hit home. It's interesting to see how different developers approached the concept, but it's clear that creating a worthy successor to Left 4 Dead is an incredibly challenging task. The mention of Left for Quake as a nostalgic and charming experience, despite its flaws, brought back memories of the PSP days. And the inclusion of Roblox's Left to Die as a popular clone that ultimately disappointed shows the range of attempts to recreate the Left 4 Dead experience. The discussion on Valve's own struggles with Left 4 Dead 3 sheds light on the difficulties faced even by the original creators. It's a reminder that sometimes it's better to appreciate the unique mechanics and impact of Left 4 Dead in other games, rather than hoping for an actual third installment. Overall, this video was insightful, entertaining, and a great tribute to the beloved Left 4 Dead franchise. It's clear that the demand for a true successor remains strong, and I can't help but share the sentiment. Here's hoping that one day we'll see a worthy continuation of the Left 4 Dead legacy. But lets be honest, that will probably never happen.
I always thought of the original Payday not as a ripoff but as a new take on the formula. I get why they added so much stuff in the sequel, but I liked the simplicity of the original game Also I'm surprised you didn't mention Blood & Bacon, I don't really know if good reviews are ironic or not
blood and bacon isn't exactly like a l4d type game, it's only a static map on a barn where you just defend against hordes of pigs, no going through different places and stuff. It's actually kinda fun but you can tell that it doesn't take itself seriously at all
PDTH can't be considered a L4D type of game because all the enemies use guns. Sure it's based off L4D but that's it. It's like calling the hold-off combine gamemodes in Gmod a L4D clone... It's more a wave-defend/horde shooter but without zombies and instead it's mercenaries/soldiers whatever you call them.
Ain't that basically it though? It's got varied enemies and a coop heavy aspect while fighting off hordes, but the only difference is guns and objectives. Sure, it ain't a zombie game, but it's basically still got the same level of cooperative vibe to it by comparison.@@chibisayori20
1:10 League didn't copy Dota 2 and it doesn't owe its existence to Valve. League came out before that and was a spiritual successor to the original dota, worked on by the same head dev from back then. LoL came out years before Valve helped make Dota 2.
an actual good "sequel" to L4D might be WWZ, it has plenty of replay value thanks to its leveling system and classes, and the characters despite not being as talkative as in L4D do have quite a lot of personality and each of them has a dedicated cinematic to explain their backstory, plus they added an FPS mode with the Aftermath update that makes it feel even more like a L4D game. Also big plus, microtransactions are kept to a minimum.
^this The first time I played it i wasn't expecting for it to be so great. World War Z is what B4B wanted to be, a great and unique enough alternative to Left 4 Dead. Every map is unique enough to be differentiated, characters are recognizable and have their own personality, the S.I can be identified easily, it has everything it needs to be a great Left 4 Dead alternative, including a lot of replayability. I haven't touched online even once, but i still have more than 200 hours on it just playing singleplayer and Split-Screen.
kinda, but in WWZ it makes a lot of sense because many skills can alter gameplay, and having them from the start would be very confusing for new players
@@Mega-BrickI prefer it over a static nothing progression like Left for Dead, I love Left for Dead, but having even just a small incentive to play more helps a lot, i prefer leveling in some form

About League and Dota. Dota wasn't originally owned by Valve, as it was a mod for World of Warcraft 3, a game made by Blizzard. It was popular around the mid 2000s until some developers of the mod went on to make League of Legends in 2009. After some legal dispute, Blizzard lost the rights to Dota and the IP was given to Valve, and development would start on Dota 2 which was released in 2013.
I've had L4D2 for a long time, and even with that, when I found Codename cure I became obssesed with it. Idk why, cause it is factually jank, rough, the epitome of an amateurish source mod. But I always went back at it, everytime I had like 2-3 free hours I would just come back to it. It is a masterpiece in regards of mindless fun.
I've read somewhere that Valve's policy on greenlighting new game developments is based on how many of their developers actually want to make it. And because not many of developers believe they can make a good Left 4 Dead 3 or Half-Life 3 or Portal 3, etc., that outdoes the predecessor, there's no development for it. That's probably why almost all of Valve's games are so beloved; The developers making aren't just there to earn their paycheck, but actually care about the games they're making.
Uploading the Unabomber in Roblox just to get banned out of sheer spite is one of the funniest thing's i've heard. Next to getting banned speedruns in Club Penguin.
I say this as someone who really couldn't care less about the first person shooter genre, l4d 1 and 2 are a masterpiece. I love playing them, both the campaign and versus, going solo or with friends, its a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
2 frame per second visual animation onto screen gave me what i can on describe as the anxiety you feel in anticipation of something bad about to happen my heartrate is 20 beats faster than when i clicked on a video im going to be unable to sit still
I actually really liked the card system in Back 4 Blood. It was rewarding to replay the same levels with different builds and it felt like completing missions gave a physical form of progression outside of the levels. It was fun to fail at a level and then change my build to incorporate ways of circumventing my previous failure. The problem with Back 4 Blood was that was just so tame and safe. The characters were boring. Their lines were stale and boring. The special enemies all looked the same and were boring. The gunplay was only slightly above average. The campaign areas were boring. There was only one or two times it strayed from 'walk through hallways and shoot', meanwhile L4D has you always doing some crazy stuff in the last level of each campaign. It was just so... unremarkable. It made me wish the card system was a mod for Left 4 Dead, so I could be playing that instead. 😹
Not sure if you already know about this soundtrack, but I feel like some songs from the Zapper: One Wicked Cricket OST would be a perfect fit for your videos. Frogger 2 composer worked on it so you know that's a loud pack right there I recommend the song Zap Pest
1:15 Its kind of funny to me to hear that Riot kind of owes Valve for LoL because of Dota 2 despite the fact that Dota isn't technically originally Valve's either
This argument is kinda funny because some of the people who made League we're same people who firstly develop Dota in warcraft III they split off and made League and Dota2 Respectfully.
To be fair he did say "Dota" not "Dota 2" It's poor researching, Valve did actually own the rights to Dota when Lol launched but as we all know, they weren't involved in the creation of it Easy mistake to make imo
watching this made me realize why the Vermintide games were well-received, memorable characters, memorable enemies, interesting setting. Only problem is it has a big file size compared to L4d
I think that's largely due to the maps in L4D being broken up in segments (allowing for previous segments to be cleared out in loading) whereas Vermintide and Darktide go through one continuous level for each map.
im surprised you didn’t mention Vermintide or Darktide. Vermintide is probably the most successful L4D clone, especially these days with its hundreds of hours of content and its roguelike mode offering tons of replayability.
Honestly to me Vermintide 2 is way more than a L4D clone. I've played it for way more time due to melee combat being very nice and generally the game has way more depth than L4D. Lack of versus sucks tho
@@JondarKorric I know, but at this point versus is basically a meme. First of all it was supposed to be developed prior to VT2 release, yet 5 years since there's basically no real news on it. They developed a whole new game in this time. Secondly, a lot of their u-turns make a lot of people speculate that a lot might not going well for versus. It started as a "game mode" for VT2, but now it's going to be a separate game. There's virtually no news, no anything. People speculate it's going to get quietly abandoned.
the anacrusis squad could've had any roles but they all look like they're just passengers. someone could've been a sec officer, one a businessman, another an attendant, and someone could be a stowaway or something
Why would you expect a discontinued Roblox game (which the devs have moved on to a much better, and more successful "L4D clone" Guts & Blackpowder) to be of high quality. Seems like it's your own fault the game failed to meet your unreasonable expectations. Why don't you review Guts & Blackpowder instead and give a review on a game the devs are actively working on rather than a game that's discontinued LOL.
I wanted to like The Anacrucis, but I agree - it just falls flat across the board. It feels like the start of something that could be good, but needs work in all areas. It looks like development on the game has mostly halted now too. I think Back4Blood is okay, although it's not nearly on the same level as L4D/L4D2. B4B has a lot of the same things on paper, but the L4D games have so much more attention to detail in every area of the game - from the animations, to the characters, to the level design. The card system was somewhat interesting, but it added complexity in an area that I feel like hindered the type of game B4B is more than it helped it. Plus you had to grind and unlock cards, experiment with card loadouts, etc which was a lot more investment than a lot of people wanted to put into that part of the game.
I really enjoyed Back 4 Blood, especially with the later updates where they reworked the whole card thing a good bit. Plus, I thought the story was pretty decent.
The story and lore of B4B is good but the actual gameplay is a severe downgrade in comparison. It's not a bad game despite what people say it's just not anywhere close to L4D
@@JohnDoe-hj9fh Personally I think both are actually too different to compare much. Left 4 Dead is this game where you go in and don't really need to think or strategies or pay much attention unless you're on higher difficulties. It is very simplistic in it's mechanics and design and in that way is very charming and easy to pick up and understand. Back 4 Blood on the other hand, is very mechanically complex with all of these different builds and cards that make numbers and stats go up and down, and is brimming with intricacy. Many different mechanics and buffs and debuffs can punish and reward you. You very much have to focus when playing Back 4 Blood, unless you're playing on Recruit. L4D is simplistic and that's very charming, whereas B4B is complex to it's core, which appeals to a whole 'nother group of people. But I still think both are really good.
There is one Left 4 Dead clone that I actually enjoyed but sadly it didn’t get enough of a chance. It’s called Earthfall. It was unique, had some freah ideas that were added to the mix and it also looked really great with environments and characters
i have chronic pain and i can be so incredibly exhausted sometimes but getting tipsy and stoned to watch rat lobber somehow always puts my internal battery from 0% to 100%
Fun fact B4B is the closer thing of the L4D3 leaks, hence why some of the same devs were working on L4D3. And honestly after 1k+ hours and the 100% on B4B and its expansions it was a very great game by the end of it all, unfortunately launched unbalanced but at least became what it was supposed to be, fun! The best L4D alternative and also only one for PlayStation players since Valve hates porting stuff to consoles anymore (or counting to 3).
10:05 thanks for completely ripping apart my discontinued failure of a game. I'm not overly attached to the game, because we did stop working on it entirely because of the fact that it's a l4d ripoff. But to me it seems your opinion of the game was already determined before you played it, and you really just wanted to dislike game. Saying the zombie spawning system is broken is just flat out wrong. I think you just played Contamination (Which has an entirely scripted sequence for a reason), and then you played the only campaign map once. Never touching survival, which was the main focus of the game while we were working on continuing the campaign. Then comparing it to the likes of Michaels Zombies and RMod is just annoying. I'll say Michael's Zombies is very well put together, but seriously? You think Left 2 Die is worse than the horrible Gmod clones on Roblox? That has to be a gross exaggeration. The audience problem you bring up is something I am very aware of, and one of the biggest reasons I stopped working on the game. It's all just kids playing a copy of l4d because they don't actually own l4d.
I dont hate ratlobber for this, but I really dont like it when someone plays a game, does no research on it and calling out bugs that aren’t bugs, and says “this game sucks” with no explanation other than comparing one game to another, but not telling what the compared game did well and what the otner game did wrong
Not a ripoff (actually came out a bit earlier than l4d) but killing floor is a great series. Killing floor 2 is still being updated with new content and is still very much fun to play, and first killing floor has community servers with mods. The formula is different to l4d, and having played both, their only significant similarities are being zombie survival theme and gun go pew pew, otherwise they feel pretty different.
@@metro3385 yes, and first, i'm very excited, second, kf2 is about to have an update with a new map, which is available in beta branch, and lastly, the main difference between l4d and kf will be that tripwire actually can count to 3
After playing it for some time and the updates they have put into it, I strongly feel like The Anacrusis shouldn't be on here with shit like Left 4 Quake, Left2Die and most certainly Back4Blood which had the most potential to only drop the ball so hard. If you ever revisit this series for a "The BEST Left 4 Dead Ripoffs" I feel like an honourable mention should go to The Anacrusis, because it feels like a genuine love letter to L4D with their own spin on it.
I recently played Back 4 Blood and honestly I didn't think it was all that bad, it wasn't L4D by any means but I found myself enjoying way more than I thought I would.
I feel like not including World War Z was a weird decision, given the fact that back 4 blood is included. Even though world War Z is heavily inspired by the books and movie with the same name, the gameplay is basically the same as left 4 dead. Get from A to B, find X to progress, chew trough hordes of zombies, horde stand-offs, etc. It's heavily criticized by many people, but given the fact that you touched so much on characters and their personalities, I feel like the abundance of characters in world War Z, with their different stories, backed up by short animations, would have been a big plus regarding your opinion on the game
I think it had just enough new mechanics to warrant it not being a rip off: third person, melee as a default instead of a secondary weapon, turrets and wire that can be placed, skill trees and classes, and a much larger scale.
@KincaidCalder-vn6bo totally agree, I did not include those things due to left 4 dead 2 having alternatives to those. Melee weapons do take up one slot, but they are stronger. Third person mods probably exist. And turrets and wires u can plays are similar to gas cans and similar one time use, area denial tools (more with workshop items). I felt like the character diversity was a way bigger plus for the game compared to these. Sorry for nit-picking, don't wanna argue, just stated my opinion
I think the problem of B4B is not the game, is how they were announcing it, a youtuber said, "you won't like B4B if you are waiting for a L4D experience" because it's true, B4B cards are from a scrapped concept of L4D, Turtle Rock showed B4B as the new L4D, which made everyone get their expectatives high, Turtle Rock wasted their chance because they were not showing B4B as a new game, just a bootleg L4D3, i find it sad...
B4B would have become a much better game and gotten 2x the player count had it just simple gotten a mod/steam workshop support. But it fallen hard not because the game itself is bad or anything,it's because of the Team's incompetence and them coming off as complete douchbags, talked down on anyone who asked for mod support instead of endorsing it and now they left it on life support confirming the game will no longer gets future updates and support just because the game didn't do well. and that really sucks because i personally think it's a pretty much fun albeit a flawed shooter and i did had a fun time with my friends and i didn't minded the whole gimmicky card system, thought it's kinda fresh for a L4D kinda game.I just it gotten the mod support because even if the team stops caring,at least the mod community would keep the game alive, preserved and re playable.
Yeah I agree I’m tired of these people that played the game and gave a full review for it unlike us people that never played it or only played it at launch oUr rEvIeW iS vAlId
Not to be that guy who jumps in and asks 'what about THIS clone?' but I thought that weird World War Z game on steam would come up. I remember it being a huge thing for people, especially with how many zombies it seemed to have, but then it just lost the spotlight once Back 4 Blood was announced, released, and flopped. Overall, great video, really hope Anacrusis picks up eventually! [bit sad about the roblox bit though, I remember an OLD game I'd played as a kid, that played nothing like actual left 4 Dead, but was super fun and stressful, in that 'I survived this long, the player zombies haven't found me, and now I have to find out how tf to get to the escape helicopter' kind of way. But I think it's been lost like a lot of classic Roblox games unfortunately.😅]
LoL was based off Dota which is true But Dota was originally war3 Custom map League of legends came out at the era of war3 Dota only later, did valve decide to take Dota around 2013 just an additional info
He is a valve fanboy, anything that is in the same genre as valve creation no matter the timeframe is a rip off from valve, did game come out 4 year earlier than valves offering, yeah they ripped off valves game. Also he misunderstands genres fundamentally, so is every rts a rip off from wc1? Or every 4x is not a clone of civ? Hey wolfenstein 3d copied halflife 6 years before it was released.
I came to the video expecting Earthfall to be on the list, but when I didn't see it I decided to look up reviews for the game and there's very little videos on it. I remember me and my friends being hyped for the game since we were craving another Left 4 Dead style game and were left a bit disappointed as it got a few updates then died. Think Left 4 Dead, but it's an alien apocalypse with weird squid/bug aliens. Neat concept, poor execution.
Almost no game comes close to the co-op experience that Left 4 Dead 2 brings. Deep Rock Galactic I guess is close but L4D2 is still king to me, everything flows so well and is oh-so fun.
They fixed back 4 blood. It's pretty awesome now. The og version was pretty broken. You could do some gane breaking stuff with that card system. That soace xlone left 4 dead is looking pretty ok too. I may have to check that out
@ratlobber i love watching your videos. It brings me back to my childhood when I would boot up steam with my friends and play source games. I miss those days. Now that all my friends moved to PlayStation so did I and I miss the old valve game days. This video reminded me about an old source game I used to play called Zombie panic source. If you see this comment I would love to get your opinion on that mod because there is a lot of history behind that game
@madmonty4761 I had the opposite experience. Completely soulless. Card system was horrendous idk wtf that was about, And the fact that they blatantly locked content that should have been included in the game to begin with behind a pay wall is a slap in the face. If I had payed full price for this bs I would have been pissed. Then they abandoned the game after a year? They reluctantly released content to fulfill there year agreement. This whole game is a cash grab. They should stop attaching l4d to everything they do cause they haven't made anything good with that kind of quality ever.
I love l4d but deep rock galactic a waaaay better online coop. It's more complex, no level is the same, funny inside jokes, side missions, customize characters and load outs, missions, and amazing team synergy.
I was kinda confused by the Roblox Left 2 Die because my first thought upon hearing the name was a Blizzard-developed StarCraft 2 custom map with the exact same name that was ALSO parodying Left 4 Dead. THIS Left 2 Die was a 2-player version of the campaign mission Outbreak where you would destroy zerg-infested structures by day and hold out against hordes of infested Terrans at night, with the addition of "Special Infested" that translate a lot of L4D specials' abilities into an RTS format. Left 2 Die was released in 2011 alongside Aiur Chef and Starjeweled as Blizzard's demonstration of the SC2 map editor's capabilities, and later got a remake of sorts for the Co-op mode introduced in Legacy of the Void under the name "Dead of Night," so I guess a lot of older players had fond memories with it.
I think I might be the only person in the world who didn't hate Back 4 Blood that much. I only played it on Game Pass so I might be a little bit biased by the fact that I didn't spend money on the game, but I didn't find it to be that ... bad? Like, aside from the forgettable characters and the watered down card mechanic (Which I dont understand why its called trading cards, since you literally dont trade with them, it could have been any other shape and not be called cards and it would have been the same thing), I think that the shooting was fun. It looked pretty nice as well. I liked a lot of it.
Yeah, people are moslty mad couse its modern, yk ADS and spirint and stuff, the game is really good and actually feels like a zombie game, like shy the fuck does zombie coop game need a good main characters? You dont care about them, you just shoot zombies, thats the fucking premise of the game.
I remember trying out a game called “Earthfall” and being so bored and unimpressed with it that the only positive I can think for it would be that a handful of tracks kinda slap. Otherwise it was the shining example of how not to copy L4D2 until B4B came along
hold up a second, valve didn't create dota original. it was a mod for warcraft 3 which is blizzard, dont tarnish valves name with the walking sexual misconduct company.
The two things that bring me back to Left 4 Dead: 1. Actual well written and enjoyable characters, despite the lack of any real deep plot. Most clones I've played don't focus on this, the characters never land or are designed in a "trendy" tacticool way, onstead of being normal people with very distinct silhouettes 2. Mods. They never seem to understand mods will make the game infinitely replayable and enjoyable for tons of people. Could you imagine a co-op shooter that hosts mapping contests then rotates those winning levels into the game itself? That would be crazy, Killing Floor 2 did something like that and it was a welcome feature in the game.
The only thing I'll say about that is I doubt L4D2's characters would land well today besides coach. I can imagine Rochelle pissing off the anti woke and alpha make crowd, Nick annoying everyone else for being a dick and Ellis seeming too try hard. L4D1's characters would probably go over well though. And Zoey wouldn't annoy the alpha male crowd because she's taken under Bill's wing
My buddy Keith tried camping out on top of a building once. He was shooting crows, but the police were too busy teargassin him to ask what he was doin up there. He screamed for an entire year every single time he opened his eyes! At first, it was funny, then it just got sad, but then it got funny again.
League of Legends doesnt owe anything to Valve/Dota 2 because it came out earlier in 2009 vaguely based on original Warcraft 3 Dota(defense of ancients) custom/fan made maps.
i love l4d i treat it like an arcade game where you just drop in, kill zombies, check the time before work, and just bounce no hard feelings on anyone and you (hopefully) contributed towards the campaign and i love how someone can just drop in as soon as you drop out like a substitute not really disrupting the zombie killing experience.
When I saw the live-service aspects, progression and rpg elements for B4B it immediately fell off my radar
>drop in on a server where some newbies are struggling
>help them beat the campaign
>refuse to elaborate further
>leave
God, I love this game.

Hey there; I am one of the devs for Codename CURE, and clicked the video solely to comment "Codename CURE is a good example", only to pleasantly find that it's actually *in* the video, so that's awesome haha
Just to address some things that got brought up; the zombies are actually repurposed zombine entities. We made a new game that wasn't actually stinky called Gemini: Binary Conflict and I recommend buying it and checking it out if you have the chance, we're proud of it and it's made 100% from scratch by us, but if I'm honest I kinda want to make a Codename CURE 2 at this point, and make sure that it is really good lol
The Halo maps you see were made by my good friend Kaleidescoop; they're unbelievably talented and I'm so proud of all the work they put into their workshop maps. They make a bunch of crazy maps for Garry's Mod, too, as well as a TF2 one that might become official soon from what I can tell. I love 'em, they're great :)
All-in-all it's always awesome seeing people talk about it; it genuinely isn't the best game in the world but I wasn't even an adult yet when I worked on it and all things considered it did come out great for what it is. It's a bummer you didn't talk about the Survival mode or the custom gamemodes or the PvP mode, but, if I'm honest, they aren't exactly that popular anyway :p
thank you so much for being apart of the dev team for cc, me and my friends enjoyed the hell out of it back in 2016
Ayy kudos to you! Had some good fun with friends play cc back in the day
We need Codename CURE 2 my brotherrr
Never stop updating this simple Game, is very wonderful, a truly inspiration Game for poor players
I'd pay for a Codename: Cure 2. It looks like a fun game with some potential
Same, I dumped hundreds of hours in to it when the community was the most active
I agree, I also played Codename Cure because I couldn't buy Left 4 Dead 2 before lol
Still was really fun
It's a great mod and very potato friendly. Literally CS Source zombie escape mode. Pretty fun if you ask me.
It was the first game i downloaded when i got steam ill always love it
I really loved Codename Cure too but mostly because I prefered the "special forces vs zombies" thing that it has going on. I realize people really love L4D's setup of "a bunch of rando's vs zombies" but I don't and never did. Still a top tier game, tho. But I would have liked it better playing as a special forces tac team with designated roles.
5:56 wooow. Rochelle getting that Meg from Family Guy treatment
Valve only makes games in two conditions:
- to showcase a product or service (Alyx with VR, Aperture Desk Job with the Steam Deck)
- to pioneer a new technology (Half-Life with physics and character animations, L4D with intelligent adaptation to the players actions)
HL3 will come when they bring an actual alien race to conquer earth (first contact)
I mean source 2 is finally up and running
We can finally expect another valve game
Weird how it took them almost 12yrs to develop source 2
While chad old valve developed source alongside Half-life 2 in 5 yrs
I recall someone saying "Valve doesn't make games. Valve makes highly replayable tech demos" and honestly it's sad that it's kinda true.

@@CosmicPocket750 game might have destructible environments, base building, bigger maps. if that's the case god knows what valve did w that
the crazy thing about back 4 blood is that despite all the marketing implying the creators were the same people that created l4d, but when you really dig in you find that it's basically just a few people who did some work on l4d, not directors, leads, producers, nothing, which isn't to say individual devs aren't important, but they're very much not the Creators- it'd be like a guy who held the boom mic on star wars making a movie and saying FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU STAR WAR yknow. deceitful imo
Yeah the crowbcat video really showed that it was a valve game and any claims otherwise are just flat out lies

Even now the Dota 2 community is drawing characters from that forgotten game for new hero/item/lore/gameplay ideas
What it was back then definitely won't be missed though

Valve even started reviving the game and hyped it up but canceled Artifact Foundry eventually coz according to them it wasnt profitable for them

The OG Vermintide is honestly a lot more similar to Left 4 Dead. It has a very grim vibe and the story is more about survival than Vermintide 2.

@@crowb4r That's just the Infected gamemode that's been in tons of games. Halo had it, Timesplitters had it, etc
In all fairness to the anacrusis it’s still in very active development with versus coming out soon and them having community play tests every week. Also when the games done I’m sure the story and characters will be fleshed out
The thing about back for blood, is it hailed itself as being “by the creators of left for dead” but in reality, it’s like if a few janitors from apple started a phone company and said “from the creators of the iphone!”
All the actual important leads and project managers weren’t onboard for B4B, and you were left with essentially just some lackies that happened to work on L4D in some capacity at some point in their career.
Would explain why I got bored playing it. I had no feels for any og the characters in B4B. No good banter.
@Schmidddy1 valve day is like a year
I'd rather they finish the Half-Life story.

I think the Anacrusis may have poured on a lot of shiny polish before the car underneath worked very well.

But lets be honest, that will probably never happen.
made with chatgpt, slackoff
I always thought of the original Payday not as a ripoff but as a new take on the formula. I get why they added so much stuff in the sequel, but I liked the simplicity of the original game
Also I'm surprised you didn't mention Blood & Bacon, I don't really know if good reviews are ironic or not
blood and bacon isn't exactly like a l4d type game, it's only a static map on a barn where you just defend against hordes of pigs, no going through different places and stuff.
@@chibisayori20PDTH is the movie “HEAT” but a game. L4D similarities end after you ignore that both games are CO-OP capable.
1:10 League didn't copy Dota 2 and it doesn't owe its existence to Valve. League came out before that and was a spiritual successor to the original dota, worked on by the same head dev from back then. LoL came out years before Valve helped make Dota 2.
yeah, really dumb misconception
an actual good "sequel" to L4D might be WWZ, it has plenty of replay value thanks to its leveling system and classes, and the characters despite not being as talkative as in L4D do have quite a lot of personality and each of them has a dedicated cinematic to explain their backstory, plus they added an FPS mode with the Aftermath update that makes it feel even more like a L4D game.
Also big plus, microtransactions are kept to a minimum.
^this
The first time I played it i wasn't expecting for it to be so great.
Leveling systems feel like a shallow way to add replayability, to my mind.
kinda, but in WWZ it makes a lot of sense because many skills can alter gameplay, and having them from the start would be very confusing for new players

"It has some potential... there are zero redeemable elements to the game at all."

I say this as someone who really couldn't care less about the first person shooter genre, l4d 1 and 2 are a masterpiece. I love playing them, both the campaign and versus, going solo or with friends, its a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Even if we won't get a l4d3, we still have the modding community to still pump out a ton of stuff for us which for me would suffice.

Frogger 2 composer worked on it so you know that's a loud pack right there

Its kind of funny to me to hear that Riot kind of owes Valve for LoL because of Dota 2 despite the fact that Dota isn't technically originally Valve's either
And LOL came before DOTA 2
It's funny because it's nonsense. League came out 4 years before DotA 2, and Valve had no involvement with the first DotA.
@@self-proclaimedanimator Yeah that too. I always forget it came out earlier.
This argument is kinda funny because some of the people who made League we're same people who firstly develop Dota in warcraft III they split off and made League and Dota2 Respectfully.
To be fair he did say "Dota" not "Dota 2"
It's poor researching, Valve did actually own the rights to Dota when Lol launched but as we all know, they weren't involved in the creation of it
Easy mistake to make imo
watching this made me realize why the Vermintide games were well-received, memorable characters, memorable enemies, interesting setting.
@@DezZzO_YT Vermintide 2 Versus is still being worked on. with the last DLC Career finally done, it'll likely be coming within the next few years.
@@JondarKorric I know, but at this point versus is basically a meme.

Because GMod Roblox did it first.
@@JohnDoe-hj9fhShut up, you’re only saying that because support for the game was rightfully cut off.
You just agreed with them in your own message though, by saying it was "rightfully" cut off, which implies it just not being as great.@@brawler5760

No you have a good point.
They even copied the special infected types pretty 1 to 1
I think the problem of B4B is not the game, is how they were announcing it, a youtuber said, "you won't like B4B if you are waiting for a L4D experience" because it's true, B4B cards are from a scrapped concept of L4D, Turtle Rock showed B4B as the new L4D, which made everyone get their expectatives high, Turtle Rock wasted their chance because they were not showing B4B as a new game, just a bootleg L4D3, i find it sad...

I only played it on Game Pass so I might be a little bit biased by the fact that I didn't spend money on the game, but I didn't find it to be that ... bad? Back 4 blood was so successful, they ended support for their game after just one year!
It was so good that they left it on its own because it doesn't need any more maintenance, it'll stay good on its own
Value basically lost their passion for games and became a megacorp
The two things that bring me back to Left 4 Dead:
1. Actual well written and enjoyable characters, despite the lack of any real deep plot. Most clones I've played don't focus on this, the characters never land or are designed in a "trendy" tacticool way, onstead of being normal people with very distinct silhouettes
This video is the reason I decided to buy the Left 4 Dead Bundle.
League of Legends doesnt owe anything to Valve/Dota 2 because it came out earlier in 2009 vaguely based on original Warcraft 3 Dota(defense of ancients) custom/fan made maps.
