    really excellent overview of the serve and great explanation of the fundamentals. Particularly liked the use of the arm to make sure the ball is in the right place. Have been working on my serve for some time and you are quite right that to get the feel and train the muscle memory you need to practice regularly. Before and after every hitting session I do 30-50 serves and do the motions without the ball for a few minuits. As you rightly say its in a match situation that the brain wants to go back to the easy pushing motion. But having practiced this now over several months I am gradually improving and serving a much more powerful serve with more consistency. Your video on pronation was a great help too in increasing the power of my serve. Many thanks.

    Hi John. Thanks for another great video. I have a question on the racquet drop once you’re in the trophy position (I’m a right hander). Does the right hip rotate upward first to initiate the racquet drop OR does the racquet drop first before the hip rotation? Can you please do a video on the racquet drop? Thanks

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  2 роки тому

      Hi Amstel, Thanks for your comments and great question. Two primary movements trigger the racquet drop, and they must be properly sequenced for optimum efficiency. The right hip certain rises, but it must be coordinated with something else. I will cover this in a video this for release next week...stay tuned! Kindly, John

      Hi Bill, Thanks for your feedback! You will probably discover by watching my videos that I advocate a toss that is above the contact point for a number of very good reasons. That is why 97% of all pros ( both ATP sand WTA) place the ball 12 - 24 inches above contact. Please review my serve lessons here on the channel for more information. Best, John

    Hi John. Yet another awesome video. Would you please develop a video that shows how to actually develop a serve from a 3.0 level that is weak, with short take back and slow arc, to a more potent one. I fall back to 3.0 serve because I can maintain match consistency. When I start adding a higher toss, bigger take back and racquet drop, I start double faulting. I would really appreciate any tips on a series of isolated, step-by-step progression steps.

    • @jacksonlar
      @jacksonlar 3 роки тому

      You don't lose two points when you double fault. You lose the same number of points as you do when the receiver sends you back a fuzz sandwich off of your lollipop second serve...i.e., one. Personally, I find the second scenario to be far more humiliating.

  • @williamsannuto8239
    @williamsannuto8239 3 роки тому +1

    Hi John I love the way you teach it's very logical and u make us think we can actually do this very motivational. I am a 4.0 league player and found this video quite helpful in getting back to the foundations of serving . How many balls would I have to serve a week to see improvement over a 3 month period in your estimation?

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 роки тому +2

      HI William, Thanks for your comment and contribution to the video. The short answer is simply this: It's not how many balls you hit. In fact, I trained a high school team of girls to serve: A total of 6 hours of training. When they were done, they all served with excellent technique. The coach was astonished and asked me how many serves the girls hit. (He estimated 1,000 serves over 3 days/ 2 hours per day). The girls replied that they hit fewer than 60 serves total, which is true. Want to know how? Click here: performanceplustennis.com/serve-foundation-program-intro/. Let me know if you have questions. A final thought: Work on the principles, not on the volume of balls you hit. Best, John

    Thank you so much John, this helped a lot. My tennis serve is the weakest out of all the parts of tennis and this vid helped me so much. I have a bad habit of leaving my pinky off of the racket. Do you know how I can stop this habit because every time I try I go straight back to my pinky off (on the bottom of the racket).

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 роки тому +1

      Hi James, Thanks for your feedback. I am glad to know the lesson is helping you. Regarding the pinky - is your hand so low on the handle that your pinky is off the end? Or is your complete hand on the handle with pinky just floating off? Thanks John

    • @jamesanzalone824
      @jamesanzalone824 3 роки тому

      Yes , my hand is very low on the racket and my pinky always floats on the air. During forehands, my racket wobbles and goes out of control. This might be a minor issue in the future, just wanted to address this just incase. Thank you for replying 🙏

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 роки тому +1

      @@jamesanzalone824 Easy to say, but you need to break that habit! How? Simply be aware. Be sure to keep your full playing hand on the handle in the ready position between strokes, and of course when you are setting up to serve. You never see a pro holding the racquet so low that the pinky is of the handle, because it reduces control. Even if you need to choke up for a bit of time...whatever it takes to break the habit. Good luck, John

    I have good technique and all the points you mentioned in my serve. When I am practicing serve I have everyrhing correct and get the result what I want in terms of speed and accuracy but but when it comes to a match situation only one out of say 5 serves are good. The difference in both situation is the fact that in one situation you are ready with 50 balls and serving and the other being you are playing points between serves , a lot more happening in mind and with body. Anyone else in same sìtuation?

      Hi Pramod, Thanks for your comment and for opening up about the challenge you face when playing. Can I do these drills and practice serves on tennis walls? Will it improve my serve or shud I get on court for serve practice?

      Hi, Thanks for your great question. I would practice off the tennis court, so you can focus on the skill development and concern yourself less with where the ball goes. Stay tuned and keep up the great work! Kindly John

    How do I get the ball to vair off when it hits the court?

      Hi, I think you mean veering off, or spinning off the court, correct? Here is a video that will help you: ua-cam.com/video/RccNJdwXnp8/v-deo.htmlsi=JcwM6PASgh2mI7dJ. Best, John

    Well, after 8 months of private lessons, I’ve never been corrected on my grip. I’ve been (poorly) serving with an eastern grip. Guess I’ll be using continental from now on!

      Hi, It's unfortunate that invested in lessons and you were not trained with the proper grip (probably some other things as well). If you are interested, I am happy to take a look at your serve and make recommendations. Simply click the following link to contact me. I will send you a invitation to the app my students use to record and send videos to me. I will review your serve and return my review back to you. Here is the link: performanceplustennis.com/contact-us/ Best regards, John
