This lesson was one of the best I've seen on the net. It was easy to comprehend, your demonstrations were clear cut and explained nicely, the visuals were done well, and the drills you gave with advice was dead on accurate and very helpful. I'm impressed. This is from a former USPTA guy with perfect scores on my playing and teaching tests. I'm going to recommend this video to people I know who could use this to improve their service motions, whether they like it or not. 😂😂👍

This is the best description of the mechanics of pronation I have seen. As a new assistant high school coach I struggle to teach this and find a lot of resistance based on players’ lack of understanding why. I’m looking forward to trying this.

What an excellent video. That long axis coming from the shoulder IS the correct power source, rather than the Radius and Ulna rolling around each other only. So good John.

…From about 10:13 - 10:20, might be the most important 7 seconds ever, in learning what the serve motion is, as far as the arm portion.

You hit the nail on the head at 9:12, "the ball is a distraction." I discovered that when I tried to serve with my eyes shut--that confirmed my toss inconsistency, but it also helped me know where my body parts were. This lesson fits right in with "The Inner Game of Tennis". THANK YOU!! Jeff
PS. My greatest struggle: "chasing" a bad toss and losing technique. Short term goals: learn to place the ball in the strike zone and acquire the discipline to recognize a bad toss and to restart the serve.

Pronation is (fairly) simple. 1) get full extension at contact 2) keep your edge as long as possible and 3) accelerate dammit! If you get enough racket head speed, and do the first two, you will naturally pronate. You have to. Beginners and intermediates may tense up and decelerate and that gets in the way of what should naturally happen....assuming your form and toss are proper too. big ifs I know.

Thank you John for these steps. As a player who wasn’t coached, I decided to film myself and noticed that even though my racket drop was good, my racket opened up way too early and there was no pronation. In your experience how long does it take a player to develop this skill? Does it take longer for a rec player who has served the wrong way for years and has to overcome muscle memory.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis

Hi Zachary, Thanks for your questions. It does take time. This is one of the more challenging changes to make, but it can be done! The more you rehearse without the ball, the better, until you really start to feel and produce the right motion. Good luck and keep me updated on your progress. Best, John

Hello John. Can I ask you if high level players pronate their arms/ shoulders on a slice serve, or do they supinate on a slice serve?
