  • My XJ-S seems to need a new hydraulic accumulator for the Teves ABS brakes.
CONTAINS ONE EXPLETIVE RIGHT AT THE END. SENSITIVE SORTS AND HOLIER-THAN-THOU SORTS STAY AWAY...

Hi. I have 1990 XJS with same Teves system. You have probably saved me hours of time [& grief] by explain how system works [+ comment]. Keep up good work on car and postings. Allen P.S. not on fb only Utube.

I'm looking forward to the next episode, the TEVES system does seem to be one of these overly complex, almost works kind of deal. But in the late 80s they probably didn't expect the cars to last 30+ years.

Absolutely. It's a weird set up. The master cylinder effectively operates the front brakes without assistance, and the rear brakes are powered by the accumulator charged by electric pump. It only looks halfway sane compared to the even more baffling Delanair climate control system inside the cabin!

G'day Jamie, My '88 XJ-S braking leaves a lot to be desired, accordingly, I am embarking on a refurbishment of the "master cylinder"/solenoid assembly. Quick, preamble, I had the rear cage out of the car to replace the rotors, fix a weeping diff, and get the handbrake to work, and ended up completely rebuilding it with new bearings, seals, shocks and springs: took a while but it wasn't that difficult. Anyway, brake performance post reinstallation wasn't great.
The actual bleeding procedure was successful i.e flow of brake fluid and air removed, however, brakes were very spongy, and pedal travel excessive. The only thing I can think of is that the seals in the master cylinder are allowing fluid past them resulting in some but not good brakes. I'll give you an update if you are interested, for your viewers once I have got it back together.
Completely unconnected, I'm visiting Scotland in October/November to have a look around Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the West Coast, try some whisky (from the source), and look at the spectacular scenery. I have to attend a Remembrance ceremony in England, so I thought I'd have a good look at your neck of the woods whilst I was there. Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, does your car have the early 1988 vacuum boosted non-ABS brakes or the late 1988 Teves ABS brakes?
I hope you enjoy the Scotland and that the weather is kind to you - never certain at the best of times but particularly so in October/November!

@@jamieduff1981 yep I have the Mk III Teves system, just about got it out today, after spilling a litre of brake fluid! Unfortunately one of the fasteners holdings the master cylinder to the fire wall turned out to be an Allen key. The other three 1/2" nuts came off easily. But not the Allen key! I left it soaked in WD40 overnight, I didn't want to break it or strip the hex hole. I'm sending the unit up to Lismore NSW, where we have a specialist brake shop.

@@jamieduff1981 Jamie, the 'you beauty' brake place in Lismore has reneged on the repair as they can't find any parts for the Teves system master cylinder, apparently, they have another in the shop, and can't get parts so have kindly refused to take mine on. Do you know of anywhere in the UK that sell Teves bits and pieces? Much obliged. Cheers, Chris

@@user-ht8iv9bi8b Hi, they're a bit thin on the ground I think, but it might be worth asking Ben Thompson at Simply Performance if he has a source?
