Those calipers are in great shape Adam I would'nt bother rebuilding them...recently restored all discs and pads on my -04 S-type and did not rebuild calipers that looked only half as nice...obviously it's your call...keep posting👍
Establishing a "stock" baseline before upgrading is a great strategy. Not every change works out, so knowing what it was like before helps detect that. For safety wiring, you can get special pliers to twist it neatly; Check aviation tool sources - there are cheap ones, adequate for car use.
"Hitting screwdrivers" would be any screwdriver that my wife has used. Unless she used a wood chisel to unscrew a screw in which case the screwdriver lived to screw another day. Sounds like a James Bond movie! Of course the brakes on your car are good, they are the same front brakes used for 30 years before your jag and once they got it right they stuck to the same formula. Those vented discs look like E-type series 3. But I do envy your stainless steel pistons. What brake fluid do you recommend Adam?
Hi Adam and it is good news that the calipers actually are in a great condition. Save you time that you can use to restore something that need to be restored. The replacement disc looks good and also as if it will improve cooling with the slots in it. Enjoy and have a nice and blessed day. Greetings from South Africa.
I have a 1985 XJS with the AJ6 engine and five speed manual transmission that is exactly the same color as this car you are working on so all of this looks very familiar. Good luck with the reconditioning work on this car. I look forward to seeing what upgrade parts you will install in later episodes.
Wow, I really like the look of those new rotors. Off to a great start. It's got to feel good to find things are in great shape after sitting for so long. Cheers!
Great job. The brake assemblé looks like the one of the bentley turbo RL. The xjs has one big caliper where as the bentley has two. I don't know What is the rotor diameter, I am curious What it is. Cheers
If it ain't broke don't fix it , even those discs look unused , wire wool and wd 40 would have brought them back i recon , EBC brake discs are better though , and better brakes are a good thing , you wouldn't gave gained anything by rebuilding the calipers .
It is up to a good start when it already looks that good. Meanwhile, my XJ40 is sleeping, looking like an igloo, waiting for the spring to come!

Agreed I've seen much worse calipers still in fine working order in much worse shape

Good luck to your classic cat! I wonder, if the job could be done without bleeding the brake system?
Great video, I'm about to do the same. But i noticed you mentioned nothing about the caliper shims?

I'd leave the calipers alone too.
