Happily a knock from the front suspension is exactly what I suspected it would be, and even more happily, the required parts cost peanuts! ( How to replace Jaguar X-Type front anti-roll bar bushes )

    G'day Jamie, My '88 XJ-S braking leaves a lot to be desired, accordingly, I am embarking on a refurbishment of the "master cylinder"/solenoid assembly. Quick, preamble, I had the rear cage out of the car to replace the rotors, fix a weeping diff, and get the handbrake to work, and ended up completely rebuilding it with new bearings, seals, shocks and springs: took a while but it wasn't that difficult. Anyway, brake performance post reinstallation wasn't great. The actual bleeding procedure was successful i.e flow of brake fluid and air removed, however, brakes were very spongy, and pedal travel excessive. The only thing I can think of is that the seals in the master cylinder are allowing fluid past them resulting in some but not good brakes. I'll give you an update if you are interested, for your viewers once I have got it back together. Completely unconnected, I'm visiting Scotland in October/November to have a look around Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the West Coast, try some whisky (from the source), and look at the spectacular scenery. I have to attend a Remembrance ceremony in England, so I thought I'd have a good look at your neck of the woods whilst I was there. Cheers Chris

      @@jamieduff1981 yep I have the Mk III Teves system, just about got it out today, after spilling a litre of brake fluid! Unfortunately one of the fasteners holdings the master cylinder to the fire wall turned out to be an Allen key. The other three 1/2" nuts came off easily. But not the Allen key! I left it soaked in WD40 overnight, I didn't want to break it or strip the hex hole. I'm sending the unit up to Lismore NSW, where we have a specialist brake shop.

    Very authentic not trying to hide the tough parts of the repairs. An approach can otherwise be to let the lifespan of the handbrake pads determine the intervals between having the complete IRS out of the car. So that every time it's out the handbrake pads is a mandatory renewal. If interval is too lomg those radius arms can stick so hard on the mounts that they need cutting into pieces to remove.Another time lapse approach is then to repeatedly apply penetrating oil, heat the part, wait, and play favorite music until the part moves.

    • @jamieduff1981

      Hi Craig, yeah the transfer boxes on these are rubbish. I've replaced 3 on previous cars and rebuilt 1 of them myself after a brand new one failed after 10k so I'm quite familiar with the insides now. If the need ever arises I'll show the insides of one again on video. The gear sets are pretty tough, it's the bearings which fail. Most of the bearings are really easy to change but a couple are a real pig to get out of the casing. I remember an outer race or two which couldn't be pressed out as there was nothing to hold onto and had to be carefully sliced apart with cutting discs on a Dremel. Got through most of a pack of discs!

    I put new shocks on my 96 xj12 and it now rides terrible. Way too stiff. Is there any adjustment on kyb shocks for the xj12?

    • @jamieduff1981
      @jamieduff1981 Рік тому

      I'm not intimately familiar with KYB but from what I remember they have no adjustment. There is normally a rotating knob on adjustable ones, either at the top or bottom of the tube depending on what would be accessible. You could check with KYB that the damping rates are as designed. If they are and the ride is genuinely bad, then it's probably the springs which are overly soft due to corrosion and loss of thickness. When spring rates and damper rates are matched the ride tends to feel best to occupants. Best of luck :)

    Hi Jamie - kudos for doing this - I feel your pain. My XJS's IRS is currently off the car and I'm rebuilding the handbrake assemblies now. Would you mind sharing which parts failed on you? I've bought part number JLM9518* from a company that rhymes with Gravid Spanners. They're Powertune branded and were a bargainous £14.54. If these are the same ones as failed for you I'll do as you've done and get the correct OEM parts to save me having to do the job twice. BTW, damaging the pads by overtightening their nuts is complete rubbish! Can't believe they said that.

  • @brendanmccabe8769
    @brendanmccabe8769 Рік тому

    Don't know if you realised when you completed the assembly but I don't think that grease seal is the correct one. That looks like the seal for the earlier style (pre ABS?) which seals on the inner diameter and is located in the rear of the hub, sealing on the upright. Later cars ( I think as a result of the change to ABS which your car is) have a seal which locates on the upright and seals on the diameter at the end of the hub (behind the large bearing). It may go together but not give a propper seal.

    • @jamieduff1981
      @jamieduff1981 Рік тому

      Hi, yes it definitely was. The ride is firmer but more comfortable compared to only having the fronts renewed, and the handling is improved as well being sharper and more stable. My car still shows the slightest over-steer bias which isn't right so I've replaced the anti-roll bar link bushes at the front now which improved matters further but I think I need to get a 4 wheel laser alignment done next. One of the biggest improvements though has been simply correcting the right height. Some will prefer the lowered appearance of sagged springs but the practicalities are that it doesn't scrape the exhausts all the time now so I need not brake for dips in the road which don't bother normal cars but always had me cringing previously.

I'm just working out whether to go with 6x Bilstein shocks, or something else. My car has the SportsPack option so I think Bilstein is the correct original equipment. @@jamieduff1981 Oh no! bad luck, that would really irk me too! If you feel like it, it would be interesting to get your views on what the car handles like with all dampers renewed though. My car is the third XJ-S I've had and its by far the worst handling, although it's only covered 31k miles in its 33 years. I think it's mostly down to sloppiness in the rear axle, since everything underneath is original except the steering rack bushes. I plan to get the back completely sorted and then see how drastic the difference is before tacking the front, if there's time this winter. I was interested in your comments about the dampers on your car being up to MoT standard but basically shot - I'm absolutely sure mine will be the same. Bought my V12 XJSC 6 years ago 100000km. Replaced all brakes and rear discs, Cam Cover seals, plugs, fuel line hose, Distributer cap, plugs, steering rack overhauled, Waterpump replaced, fuel filters, thermostats, bottom hose, expansion tank, Drivers seat repaired, seats re coloured. Shock absorbers replaced. Air conditioning overhauled. Ignition amp repaired. Now 22000 KM travelled , the windscreen became de laminated so in for New screen, new fan and viscous, new heater control and service, oils filter coolant . This is a car in excellent original bodywork, but still cost me around 10000 quid to bring up to par. I have slight oil leak from the one drive shaft , but will live with that as my car has the American axle, where bearing and seals are pressed fitted and rear subframe would have to come out. Good fun I am ex B/L technical engineer but at 75 do not do much of my own maintenance on this challenging car these days. Here in Auckland NZ we have some limited expert skills available, takes for ever to get parts here from overseas.

    Had the same problem. Turned out to be a bad injector harness holder / lead. Listen to the injectors with any piece of hose or even a screw driver. After 5 yrs of ownership of a xjs c, I've discovered most problems are usually simple fixes. Simple fixes as in to diagnose, not to actually repair. Once you get it into your head your actually working on 2 six cylinders, everything becomes so much simpler. As a side note, Feeling the exhaust is the best way to see which bank is not running properly, thus adding a X pipe as some do, ruins this simple diagnostic method. Enjoy your 12

I happened to notice 2 of the 4 long bolts holding the airbox and throttle body to the inlet manifold showing a quarter inch of shank. None of the 4 were tight. I don't know when someone was last in there but I hadn't touched them in my year of ownership but I think they've been slowly unwinding themselves. Anyway, I screwed them back in properly and it runs great now. It must have been leaking air after the throttle body and running lean.

      Hi, I'd like to change the downpipes in the future. The firing order on this V12 means the 3-into-1 manifolds don't actually hurt but the 2-into-1 downpipes joining them are too short. The primary length for equal length exhaust headers would be almost 4ft long to get a meaningful improvement which obviously won't work in a car. For this though, it doesn't really justify the cost of upgrading - to repair this leak properly changing both seal rings and fitting new brass nuts and washers is costing me £14 delivered. Changing the downpipes for long tube extractors also needs fuelling changes and costs closer to £900 starting price. I have just spent some money on new stuff which arrived yesterday and will be subject to the next video :D

Other items I have done that you should look at are radiator core clean out, water pump, front sub frame mounts (v and donut), ARB bushes, rubber fuel injector pipes, I would expect you will soon require a heater matrix and I also have spent a bit of time on oil leaks (rear pipes and sandwich plate), as well as the A/C. I have got mine to a point where I go year to year and have to do little to nothing on it and it is completely reliable (fingers fully crossed). The best thing I did, that transformed the car was dumping the auto and installing a 5 speed manual (getrag), turns a good car into a great car.

      Hi! Thanks for looking in. I've done the fuel injector hoses already but I do still have the yellow fan which is showing some cracks on the hub. I'd like to replace that and its clutch, and that would be a good time to pull the radiator and have it rodded out. That also would be the time to remove the header tank and give me access to fix some corrosion on the inner wing under where the header tank sits. I want to change all the coolant hoses too. A manual swap would be great, and I'd love to do it but sadly our annual bonuses from work are far short of what we expected so it won't be this year. I would like to re-bush / replace rubber mounts, and it needs new springs and dampers all round really. I'm quite fussy really, but it means my car ownership is always quite expensive when acquiring a car after the sort of owner who thinks if the car scrapes an MOT it's perfect.

      @@jamieduff1981 I'm the same, but at least you end up with a fully sorted, reliable car in the end, unfortunately I tend to start looking for a new project at that stage? Personality fault I think.

    Wow, that was cheap: :) Had the same trouble with my brakes, I only found this out when slowing or trying to go round some roundabouts and later trying to slow to take a sharp bend on the M53. When I eventually dropped the rear subframe I found the calipers to be sized solid and one handbrake pad missing. Quite how the car passed the MOT prior to delivery God alone knows but I think we both know the reason why. I'm currently rebuilding the front suspension which due to circumstances I'm a bit behind on at present. You can view my fun and games on my channel if you wish.

      Hi Jon - It was when I had the rear wheels off the ground, engine running and gearbox in Drive as per the Repair Operations Manual to test the signal coming to the trip computer that I realised the brake pedal could only stop the wheels turning against the torque converter at idle right at the end of the pedal travel that I realised they did nothing. Very shortly after one pad started grinding on the disc and that was that. I'll start watching your progress this evening - thanks! Right now I'm going to enjoy the end of the working day by doing some woodwork on my sailing dinghy build :)

      @@anthonybaiocchi3028 That's good. I have seen the work done on a Series I E-Type and Ferrari 308 owned by my friend which was performed by Queenswell Coachworks in Forfar. The person to speak to there is Andy Anderson. I understand their bread and butter is accident repair but their metalwork on restorations is very good. Both of my friend's projects went (way) over budget but there was a big degree of scope creep with both. The results are fantastic. I myself lack the budget for that so have to do my own work :)

    Not true about phone , I believe law make no differentiation if you are in control of car at any time you can get points , did in a car park . I think its bollocks but be careful

      (My) private property and public access is the big difference. A car park is definitely public access so the road going law applies there. :)
