Emily has Tourette Syndrome, a neurological condition (or brain thingy as she likes to call it) that causes her to make certain movements, or tics, and to blurt and shout things out that she shouldn't, and that she can't control.
Tourette's has been a real challenge for Emily. She has a pretty severe case of it and it is just super hard and painful for her, even with all the advocacy around. There are two key part to her Tourette Syndrome - Echolalia and Coprolalia. Echolalia is the tics, the compulsion to repeat words or phrases that she has heard other people say, or movements, and Coprolalia is the really hard one, it's a part of Emily's Tourette's disorder that only 10% of sufferers have and is where you feel compelled to swear and shout out rude things and generally can't stop yourself from that desire to do or say that taboo thing. It's like a disease.
It's always the rudest and most socially unacceptable things that she feels compelled to yell out, and she really has a very hard time controlling it. She's in therapy to try to help her manage her Tourette Disorder, and they work on things like retraining her tics to come out in different more acceptable and less disruptive ways.
For a lot of the swearing tics her therapist would help her change the offensive words into more acceptable ones, like the word B-I-T-C-H she would change in her head to B-E-N-C-H and then shout out the word bench. This way she's not working so hard to suppress the tic which actually makes things worse. Holding that Tourette level urge in makes her feel really ill and tired afterwards. Living with Tourette Syndrome is constant work for Emily.
Some of the smaller tics that she displays are things like blinking a lot, or rolling her eyes back and up into her head. She also has some larger movements like shoulder shrugging, or sometimes she'll just feel the urge quickly move her head back and forth, or to kick her leg out.
Another tic that caused her a lot of problems was the urge to click and crack her knuckles all the time, even when they didn't need cracking. When she couldn't crack them with her hands she would try pressing them down on the table, harder and harder, and she ended up really bruising and hurting herself.
Her teachers and classmates know, of course, and if the tics and Tourette's get too bad in class she has tic room she can go to, let it all out, and then head back to class for lessons. She really didn't want to go to a special school.
Still it's really hard to focus and concentrate and she feels like everyone is staring at her. Her friends are great about it, but even they feel the need to point out her tics sometimes, which is kind of annoying.
Emily has done an amazing job living with her Tourette Syndrome, and she gets better and better at managing it all the time, and the counselling. Her one message to all those suffering from a disability or condition, or struggling with anything at all - she wants you all to know that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, things will and do get better, and to have faith!

It really is. I don't have tourettes but I do have random movements at random times, uncontrollable. Like as in, slap myself or something like that. Though, I must say. Good for you, to keeo going with life. It must be hard to deal with Tourettes, so I honestly hope things get better for you. I'm glad that her teacher helps her with her tiks, I had a boyfriend that had Tourette syndrome. But it wasn't as bad as hers. All he would do is tense up but that was it,and maybe make a noise. I broke up with him but not because of his Tourette's, we had been dating for a year but he lived to far and couldn't drive because of his Tourette's. So I have no problem with people with Tourette's and I'm glad that she is getting help for it. ♥️🖤

i have tourretes too ! i do my tics at school and people look at me super weird , and my friends know i have tics and if they see me do a new tic , they ask - “oh is that a new tic or are you doing that for fun ?” like , sometimes it gets me annoyed because some people search up my condition if i tell them and then the next day they start asking me a bunch of questions . i have vocal tics , swearing tics , eye squinting , twitching , and moving my head , and more

As someone who lives with a tic disorder, it’s hard. It’s hard but I have many people in my life who are very understanding when I swear or hit myself. It’s hard to restrain my tics. And remember to be kind to someone with a tic disorder or Tourette’s because we can’t control it ❤️

Same, I dont yell out swear words but when I burp, sneeze or cough I repeat "excusez-moi" ("excuse me" in french) for 2 entire minutes (at best). Every other tic that I have are violent hand movements or always blinking without stopping.

You often can see quite well when someone with TS has a tic or just really wants to swear, it often like interrupts in a sentence and stuff like that, and yeah, I can stick out my middle finger whenever I "want" because of my tics, but I just don't want to... it may seem lucky you just may do it if doing it once or something, but you don't know how frustrating and embarrassing it is to do that all the time...

It is not a fun experience to live with my luckily my sisters and my friends show me a lot of support. I don’t quite see the point of your comment as it seems to have the purpose of making me mad. I've got Tourette Syndrome, vocal tics, and motor tics. It's made me depressed ever since 2nd grade(I'm currently in 10th) and I never wanna leave my room. I cry myself to sleep every night, wishing they were gone. It's really painful and terrible for me, if I had 1 wish, I would remove my Tourettes.
The tics I have are blurting out random words, head jerks, arm jerks, dramatic eye blinking, constantly curling up my hand, shrugging, repeating words, mouth and nose twitching, making faces, scrunching up my nose, rolling my eyes back, sniffling, making high pitched sounds, humming, repeating what someone else says, coughing, and the worst of all my tics are grunting and clearing my throat. Tics and Tourettes really annoy others, but I can't control it no matter how much I try. It hurts me much more than it hurts everyone else, and I don't know anything to do that could help.
Hello I actually think that i might have Tourette’s my doctor diagnosed me with chronic tic disorder and it’s things like cutting the side of my tounge with my teeth, forcefully bloat my stomach, roll my eyes, stretch my mouth, and I have now started grunting/clearing my throat and I am now worrying about having Tourette’s if you are still struggling I hope this makes you happier to know that you aren’t alone
As someone with Tourette’s, I want to clarify that when it “hurts”, it doesn’t mean embarrassing. It’s actual physical pain that you feel from the result of ticing. When I was young I used to nod my head up and down profusely which resulted in agonizing headaches day in and day out.

I have tic and it’s so hard having conversations. Everything you said is so relatable and hits so close to home. Sometimes, I just avoid conversations. Theres been so many times people will mock me, even my supervisors. When my tic kicks in. I have a habit of scanning the environment to see whom is concentrated on me. Sometimes, life can be so unfair.

Actually surprisingly there are 1 in 200 kids that are diagnosed with Tourette’s and a lot of times it goes into adulthood so it’s actually more common than most ppl think
I'm pretty sure it just got the attention of people that have it, some might be lying though I don't know
I promise I'm not lying, I have it and it's hard to keep control of. Sometimes in class I make wierd noises and it's very embarrassing. I don't know anyone else with Tourette syndrome.

I have Tourette’s but most of the time it’s not that bad I used to tic all the time but now I do many hobbies in fashion styles and I do art. I am more confident in myself and it helps me stay strong!💜👍

Bro same, I have Tourette's and struggle with coprolalia it's gotten me into same sticky and awkward situations. I have thankfully found a medication that takes care of roughly 90% of my tics and lets me live a pretty normal life. I'm lucky to have meds that work so well, I was miserable before I started taking it. You're doing great and just know you're not alone

Didi Gonzales same here. I dont do it that often, and it some other stuff i do. I blink alot more Then normal, and some of the stuff is only In my Brain. Tics Can actually be many things, and not everybody has it that bad :)

I have a tic too! Usually every 5 or 3 seconds I start to twitch out. It's annoying since my friends and family always try to stop me like "if you twitch again we won't be freinds" or "you will be punished if you tic again"
