  • In this episode of the Podcast I speak with Professor Munjed Al Muderis about his escape from Iraq as a refugee. In 1999 Munjed was forced to flee Iraq after a busload of army draft evaders were brought into the hospital where he worked to have the top of their ears amputated under Saddam Hussein's orders. The senior surgeon in the operating theatre refused the orders and was immediately interrogated and shot in front of several medical staff. Rather than complying with orders Munjed decided to escape. This conversation covers Munjed's journey from Iraq to Australia as a refugee. We also discuss Australian refugee policies.

These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. The views expressed in these episodes are my own and those of my guests. This episode is the first part of a two part conversation that covers Munjed's journey from being a refugee to being a world leading surgeon. In the second part of the discussion we discuss one of Munjed's dreams: the goal of creating a more economically sustainable environment for medicine in Australia.

This was an incredible insight in the current Refugee crisis, and Australia’s decision to be as nasty as they possibly could/can! A decision that the UK is trying to copy against a backdrop of courts cases brought against them. So far this UK Gvt has not been allowed to export people seeking Asylum to Rwanda for processing, however there are offshore boats looking like floating warehouses being prepared, we used to have prison ships hundreds of years ago, this is like the latest version. Listening to the information about doing the legal route to claiming asylum and how difficult it is (and impossible for many) was something we all need to know, I had no idea - when is this ever explained to the general population in the UK, or in the world ? My Dentist is an Iraqi who came here at the beginning of the invasion of Iraq with his young family. He is hands down the best Dentist I’ve ever had, gentle, professional, funny, I am very thankful for him, though very sad that he, like Munjed had to leave his country. The brain drain from countries Refugees are fleeing is to the great benefit of the host country, but I can’t help feeling very sad for the communities they are coming from. Best wishes Mr Munjed, to you and your family.
