  • After fleeing the tyranny of Saddam Hussein’s regime in a leaking boat, Professor Munjed Al Muderis was detained on Christmas Island, then in Curtin Detention Centre in Western Australia.
He overcame these extraordinary obstacles to become an orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in hip, knee and reconstructive surgery, and now advocates for the human rights of others.
A compassionate ambassador for multiple organisations, including the Red Cross, Munjed is a powerful advocate for humanitarian work supporting people seeking asylum and refugees.
Funded out of his own pocket, Munjed has taken a team to his former homeland of Iraq seven times, to help the victims of the conflict he fled and has educated other orthopaedic surgeons in the osseointegration technique and in complex limb reconstruction.
His surgical innovations and breakthroughs are helping Australians and people throughout the world. Munjed exemplifies the valuable and positive contribution that refugees can make - leading by example what it means to be Australian.
    Australian of the Year Awards:
Each year our nation celebrates the achievements and contributions of eminent Australians through the Australian of the Year Awards by profiling leading citizens who are role models for us all.
They inspire us through their achievements and challenge us to make our own contribution to creating a better Australia.
The Awards honour an exceptional group of highly respected Australians who ignite discussion and change on issues of national importance.
The Australian of the Year Awards provides everyone with the opportunity to recognise any Australian who makes them proud.
The four Australian of the Year categories are:
    Australian of the Year
Senior Australian of the Year (those aged 65 years or over)
Young Australian of the Year (ages 16 to 30)
    Australia's Local Hero
The Awards operate at two levels - State/Territory and national.
State and Territory selection committees select four nominees for each Award category, with one of these nominees being announced as the State/Territory Award recipient.
The National Australia Day Council Board selects the Australians of the Year from the group of 32 State and Territory recipients.
The prestigious year-round program culminates in the announcement of the National Award recipients in Canberra on Australia Day Eve.

I have trouble believing that republican guards take deserters to hospital for mutilation. As if they could bother with such things. I am from Iraq and know the mentality of Iraqis. Plus why can’t he tell us the name of the orthopaedic consultant who allegedly refused to mutilate deserters and was shot on the spot?!

I can believe it and I have only travelled there...I have friend who has been tortured for standing up against corruption and his mind and body is not the same he lives in fear. Last week a student friend was shot in the leg when he protested against PUK AND PDK taking student fees for their own pockets!! I have known a soldier punished when false report made against him. As you are from Iraq and know the mentality you know tribal revenge & loyality. religious pride & zealots. Some would rather humiliate others, feel power over them and these are the worse kind!

You clearly didn’t read, didn’t understand or didn’t pay any attention to what I wrote.

@@daraa151 I am listening. And I did read what you wrote. If I did not understand would you please explain?... I will tell you though it was not an orthopedic consultant that refused to cut the ears off the deserters.. it was his supervising medical officer. As Munjed only studied and became a specialist in orthopedics after his detention in Australia. and you are obviously aware of the hospital ranking system in Iraq. Have you read his books? this is only a very short video and there is much more detail.

No you didn’t pay attention to what I wrote!
I know about Munjid, I even worked with him briefly at Westmead Hospital NSW.
1- I still don’t believe Iraqi republican guards could be bothered taking deserters to hospital for mutilation. If they wanted they could’ve mutilated the deserters themselves.
2- I have never said that his boss whom allegedly got shot for refusing to mutilate was an orthopaedic. Plus if he was an orthopaedic or not we still want to know his name! Why not some pictures of him?! Who is his family?! I am sure it’s not that hard to provide all that!
From the very short time I spend with Munjd I got the vibe he is an actor and love attention nothing else.
Edit: I do apologise, I did say his boss was an orthopaedic.

@@daraa151 I am listening. it is true there are so many who take on false identities and so forth or take anothers story - I have seen that with people taking the story and or identity of Yezidi or Christian person in Iraq post Yezidi genocide just so they can get to EU and I know of at least one Syrian in Aust. whose (Yezidi) story is very suspect. Thank you for your explanation.
