🎮 Copycat is a wholesome, narrative-driven game about rejection, belonging and the true meaning of home. It follows the story of a newly adopted shelter cat who becomes the victim of an elaborate plan when a jealous, stray copycat steals her place in the household.

🌻 Hey! We're Sam and Kostia, a Kiwi and a Ukrainian, first-time game makers full-time dreamers. Our indie game project, Copycat, made us feel a little scaredy-cat entering the industry. So we started this devlog to share our progress and experiences in 2021. In 2022, we founded our video game collective called ‘Spoonful of Wonder’. Now in 2023, we have taken our demo to PAX and SXSW. We looking forward to launching early 2024.

Noooooo! This looks so sad 😭 i love cats. I literally just rescued one from a parking lot on new years night and it's a little orange kitten. He's going to a very loving home
awww
So I just finished the demo and enjoyed every second! That said, I figure you'll probably want some feedback, so here goes! First I'll list the good, for morale purposes:
1. Animations are great! There's weight to movement and it's very satisfying. In a game that's 90% walking around, this is _very good!_
2. The ideas are all interesting. I love Dawn's growth, I love the choices I can make, small as they are, and I love how Dawn is always thinking of becoming a wildcat.
3. The visual storytelling is top notch. The dream sequence, the music changes, the camera work, it all conveys what Dawn is thinking in an almost childlike, embellished way that makes it easy to empathize with Dawn.
4. The semi-lock-on mantling is a stroke of genius! I love how instead of just leaping awkwardly onto things, you can leap AT things and Dawn will begin an animation of clambering up the edge. I think this is something that takes this game from good to excellent! It's a joy to move around and jump and run!
5. Various animations are, again, so fun that they make me reconsider just how a game should be made. We all know when a game is fun, and when a game is boring, but sometimes we don't know why. I realize as Dawn goes into a sitting position, and then, when you want to move, she eases up to her feet before you can move, that without these little touches the game would lack much of its character. I want the game to force a little bit of slowness, to compel the immersion.
The negative list will be a bit longer, but know that I would have played for 6 more hours if the demo kept going, lol! Also, I know it's an unfinished game, so if anything here is already intended to be refined, then of course just ignore me, ha ha! :)
1. Glitches, specifically with movement, even more specifically with jumping. If you hit something at the wrong angle, don't jump down correctly, or jump into the wrong thing, Dawn may gain the powers of flight and, on one occasion, won't remember how to turn those powers off! I had to move on to the next scene, floating slowly through the air, in order to break out of the glitch.
2. Hitboxes. Again, this is mostly about jumping, but I found myself struggling at times to mantle things, or struggling to know if it was something I could. A slightly more aggressive lock-on to ledges might be the solution, but I can't say for sure since I'm no game developer. I think this really needs to be refined as yet to bring the fun factor up another point or two.
3. While I love the animations in general, I feel like the jumping animation, when not directly mantling something, is a little too floaty and wild. I feel a lack of control with it as she flies kind of far and hovers in the air a bit too long. Additionally, the main animation I'm disappointed with is the running. It's fine, but it lacks that "special sauce" that the normal walking and turning animations have. The way her ears fold back is one part of the problem, because it implies she's scared or aggressive, but the other is that there's not enough bounce in the running stride. It feels a bit too linear and without enough character. Maybe this is a small thing, but in actuality, if you take anything from any of my criticisms, I think _this_ one is the biggest since it relates to a common action that you'll be doing throughout the whole game.
4. Speaking of animations, I think there's a lack of synergy between the cat's turning movements, which feel very satisfying, and the environment. For instance, if you're just walking along an open space, you can turn no problem. Cats have to kind of account for their long bodies. But if you're on a shelf, or any kind of narrow space, it becomes nearly impossible to control with any effectiveness. This is an area where "realistically" it wouldn't be an issue, but in a game I feel like I'm lacking certain control. As a point of consideration, some options would be to either make turning on shelves have its own animation, or make it MORE OBVIOUS that you're not SUPPOSED to be able to turn. This way, instead of feeling like the controls are clumsy, it'll be an obvious feature.
5. One last thing in this regard. I feel like it's a bit too easy to either fall off or have the cat intentionally decide to jump down from a high place. An idea for mitigating this would be to put some logic into the controls so that if you're walking along a ledge, you'll have to turn the direction of the controller MORE toward the ledge for Dawn to decide you want to jump down; additionally, there could be a momentary "buffer" pause so that if you happen to move toward the ledge for an instant, but you're very close to the ledge, she doesn't just immediately jump down. The pause would be accompanied by a preparatory animation, with dawn gathering herself to jump, rather than just pausing. The only issue I can readily see with this is that entering and then exiting this animation might look odd and may also break the flow of your movement, so perhaps it would be better just to not have her jump down unless you're really angling hard toward the edge or something.
You guys know better than I do, so I don't expect my suggestions to be taken. They're more to explain the problem I seem to be having.
Anyway, very happy with the game so far and will be purchasing the instant it's fully available!
Hi Sel, So great to hear from you. It's wonderful to have you on this Copycat journey with us from the beginning. Thank you for your creative energy. We really appreciate the time you have taken to write up some positives and negatives of your experience. We are thrilled to hear the game resonates with you and that you are particularly enjoying the dream sequences. Thanks again for listing some of the negatives. We will work hard to improve the jumping. We are a small team, so we are doing the best we can. Big Smiles, Sam & Kostia

Added to my Steam wishlist!
Is it arriving also on Nintendo switch? That would be great ❤
I just finished the demo. Man, i love this game cant wait for the end product! even if the demo is short I had a a lot of fun. i chose the orange cat. it reminded me of my cat that died 2 years ago. he was an old cat when he died. I still miss him. this game brought me to tears not just because i loved my cat but its because of the fun scenes and games that brought me joy and nostalgia. and the sad scenes where perfectly done. The writing of the text throught the game was better than pizza in italy. the only complaint i have is the optimisation of the game its kinda laggy even tho i can easily run games similar to this one. i love the characters and the realisations that happen upon you. i wishlisted this game. wouldve loved if i could write a review on the steam page but cant prbly because its a demo. anyways have great luck on making the game better. it takes love and affection to make such a good game. i aspire to be a game developer one day and this is just even more motivation. Thanks for the absolute masterpiece of this demo
Thanks for your kind words! Your orange cat sounded really special. We are glad you can connect with him 💛 We would love your review on our Steam page when we are ready to launch. Stay tuned.

Hi Nick,
