I Made the Best Quilt Ever with BLACK Fabrics (It’s my very first time!)

  • Today I'm making a dark patchwork quilt (monochromatic quilt) and sewing with black fabrics for the first time.
    Black isn't a color we typically associate with quilting. It's hard to create dark quilt patterns because there is no contrast between the fabrics, so it all looks the same.
    This galaxy quilt pattern is absolutely beautiful (the dark colors work really well together) and it's the perfect sewing project idea for beginners.

    Is it the camera? I don't see any black. I just see a variety of blues going to midnight blue. That purple fabric seems like a throw away to make it to 10.

      Well, I bought black and they looked black enough when the pack was shut... But then, as it turns out, they're much bluer than the listing anticipated...not as blue as they look on camera though...

      I don’t like dark fabrics either. They don’t have a place in my happy little world! The first thing I thought when I saw the fabrics was oooh a reverse stained glass window. I’m currently working on a wonky-ish half log cabin quilt with 80 finished blocks. I’ve made 3 “mistakes” similar to yours so far and I already decided the first one will go in the bottom center spot. How many more I end up will determine where the rest of them will go. I refuse to take them apart. Great quilt.

    I had to reach out to you after watching. I know it probably sounds silly, but seeing how casually you ripped those blocks apart meant so so much to me. I made a quilt top years ago, and it was crooked. I was so disappointed that I folded it up to deal with later and never picked it up again. But you so casually were like, 'darn' *rip*. It showed me how silly my disappointment really was, and that I should just take it apart and do it again. Thank you. ❤

Ohio start, sawtooth star etc. Goodness Sandy, if you and I were in the sewing room together a some time the sound of fabric being unpicked would be deafening! haha. The painter in me who’s also into color theory cringed at your saying monochromatic isn’t fun. These also aren’t monochromatic because there are variations from blue to green in these blacks but I watched through because I like watching you work and quilting is such a fascinating process to me.
    Edit: clearly I didn’t watch all the way through before posting because the one with the crystals is beautiful! Art is truly subjective 😂

    • @seweasybysandy
      @seweasybysandy  Місяць тому

      I get what you're saying and as a beginner watercolor painter myself, I agree. But with quilting, or the way I do it, the lack of contrast is a really big deal and, in comparison, it's kind of boring hehehe

  • @cynthiajones1461

    How did you do the math to know how many blocks you could get out of the fabric you had to use? And how much fabric did you have left over?

    • @seweasybysandy
      @seweasybysandy  Місяць тому

      I'll have to measure how much I have left. As for the quilt block size, I knew each strip was 2.5 inches wide and so was the white square. I just removed all the 1/4inch seam allowances from my calculations and knew how much I would get.
