One of the most overlooked tips: practice as often as possible. Your vision of your own art and even pixel art in general will shift into something totally different as you practice. You'll have way more patience when it comes to dealing with designing new sprites and you'll be able to correct your mistakes way faster than usual.
This was really helpful thank you! For tip 4 I like adding bulkier corners on items you can interact with so players know that’s the focus of the schene
Thank you, I always loved pixel art, I lose interest and motivation because of a bad experience with an ex friend of mine, but maybe I should try it out again.
I don't know how UA-cam algo recommended this channel / video on my feed.. but I really need this kind of stuff on my other account (separate accounts for school / work / self-study (programming // design) / personal). Thank you for the tips. It is really helpful for a beginner like me.
I find that doing 64 by 64 pixels is a million times easier for me to do than doing 16 by 16 or 32 by 32 mainly bc I like adding allot of details but It's difficult to do so if the space is too small
Before you start drawing. Look at pictures of either photos or other drawings of the thing you want to draw. Just to get some inspiration and get the proportions or anatomy of the thing. Then start to visualize and start with a simple single color silhouette. Then add base colors where needed. Then start shading. And don't forget to once in a while take a look at your drawing from a distance to see how it would look in the intended resolution. Add a background and even better.
My biggest struggle right now is making characters and animation to said characters. Been trying to understand through videos here but you might be better at explaining, who knows😉 good work on the video, allot of tips that I will start to use👍🙂
Thanks! So glad I could help! Characters and animation can be a struggle for sure. It helps to study the behavior/movement of people and animals to get a feel for the timing and order of what moves first and how the rest of the body follows.
@@KiwiBee I played your game jam and really enjoyed it. I was wondering how you got the crouch thingy to work? Would love a video on how you made your game as well
epic vid. My only extra tip is to try a bit of regular drawing and learn a bit of painting (you don't have to do it yourself) but it'll help a lot in knowing more how colors and shading work
That's true! It is important to improve your color picking. I think starting out with pre-made palettes is a great option for beginners because it helps develop an eye for good color pairings. Once you have that, it will be easier to start selecting your own colors. Great tip!
this is actually really helpful, i am a beginner and making a game using pixel art so ive been looking for a good tutorial ^^ (btw you really remind me of goodgis and your art style is really cute :D)
Honestly, the main thing that I'm really struggling to grasp right now is shadows. I kind of get like lighting on an object and how to color that, but shadows are a huge struggle.
😂 definitely had the copy issue happen to me hahaha. Another tip is for assets use real world image references like for trees, swords etc. Seems to better help make the look and feel of them much better at least for me if did. I have only shared one pixel art on my Instagram hahaha as of yet but will eventually share a game I am working on with my kids! Love your videos great Work 👍🏼
Woah this video is good good, definitely subscribing! Oh and I have a problem where I feel like my sprite is not good enough, or not detailed enough, how do you avoid that feeling of "This is not good"?
Thanks! Yeah, I think all creatives struggle with that. The important thing is not to judge your work based on other people’s work. You’re going to have your own unique style and that’s good! If everyone made the same art that would be boring. You should look at other people’s work for inspiration, but don’t be hard on yourself because you’re not at that level yet. Have grace for where you’re at, and just keep learning and getting better! :)
Something to note is these are conditional. Like the outline tip. I tend to outline important things such as characters, important items, and things the payer will collide with. Background details like those acorns, clouds, flowers etc, that aren’t going to be interacted with if you are playing a game or arn’t important to be in focus on in a overall scene don’t get an outline. This helps the important stuff obvious while keeping the less important things in the background. You can also use a color other than black for the outline that matches the colors used, (such as a dark yellow for the key, a grey for the bunny, or a dark green for the tree,) this will make it a softer edge. Speaking of which if you want something to look manufactured or mechanical having those sharp corners help. This is also good for spikes. It’s all situational and you will learn when to apply these things and when not to the more you practice.
@@KiwiBee yea i did long ago tbh XD i was hopping u could go more on. The topic of it some shapes on it is bothering me i dont rlly strugle with it anymore now charcters giving me hell
@@JADEN_THE_ONE I'm glad you're not struggling as much with it anymore! Keep practicing and studying other characters you like in the same style and I'm sure it will get easier. :) Best of luck!
Hey! I have a question, because... i have Aseprite for pixelart, and i'm a beginner, yeah! So, it's okay if i use that noww?? Or another app or web it's better?
I use Pyxel Edit. Aesprite is also good. If you're looking for a free version then Piskel and Microsoft Paint are good options for getting started. Best of luck! :)
