80yr old Pete starting his video with "ah, my back!"
for sure lol
But still maintaining the exact same inflection
underrated comment
Im for real doing a platformer tutorial ASAP
Pixel artist be like:
I have to make a 16 colors palette,
Canvas size: 5000x5000
yup lol
I do one of two things:
Either, I make a tiny canvas size if I'm sure.
Or, if I'm unsure, I make an excessively large canvas and zoom in Super High with a tendency to go in the middle, so that I can let the smallest object help decide the appropriate canvas size.
that last bit of information regarding how the characters are juuust a bit bigger than 16x16 answered a question ive always had about pixel art when it comes to the difference between the environment and the characters. thanks!
Such great information Pete thanks for helping everyone along the way. You rock!
glad to help.
I actually prefer GameMaker 2 to unity, Unity is not too hard for me, I just like GM better. I like the more simple engine cause then I can really push it. When picking an engine, I'd at least try it.
Same, having a more minimal engine pushes you to make the most out of it.
Yeah, I started off with Construct 2 (very basic game engine) but then upgraded to Unity after I was more comfortable with game development concepts
Unity uses C#. You can get a job knowing the engine or C# Unlike knowing GameMaker language or gamemaker engine. Why not learn something you can turn into a career?
@@PeterMilko for learning the basics of programming both engines are great and a lot of knowledge is interchangeable. I wouldn't just write off all the less complex engines because there isn't just one learning path that fits everyone and it can be great to just experiment around. That said Unity is the way to go for a job in game dev and I would recommend anyone to eventually give it a shot. Also great tutorials!!
Problem with trying it is you will get comfortable and never learn a real engine that can get you a job in the industry or a real programing language C# so it's a waste of time instead of just going with the better one from the start
what the heck, this was eeeeextremely helpful! Thank you so much!!
I loved that 16x16 character you showed. I think it would be awesome if you made a 16x16 character tutorial, love that style !
Yeah I should, and will
Adjusting the canvas size so Twitter doesn't crop the image is really useful. Thanks for sharing!
I've been looking for info like this for a while now. Thanks, Pete.
Thank you for continuing to teach me more and more about pixel art with your videos!
I finally understand why all my pixel art I post to twitter has such poor resolution! Thank you for explaining why and how to fix it in such an easy way!
Youre helping me so much, i improved so much my games since i started. Im not a professional or something like this, just making it for fun and hobby ❤
Glad to help
Felt like that was more of an ad for stuff than a tutorial. 5 minutes to say use 16x16 if you can't draw. This was kind of a bummer man. I hope you can course correct and do more content and less plugging in your next ones. This one and the last one just feel spammy.
Most people dont talk about how game engines are the only modern reason to choose a certain pixel size and there are misconceptions about everything fitting to grid. I feel you and no worries ill have in depth pixel art lessons coming up.
@@PeterMilko Thanks for not taking it too harshly. :) Looking forward to the next ones!
Ignoring the literal dozens of amazing tutorials he's already made...
@@taylorrathbone5638 Readings not your strong suite huh?
@@Gearshockand spelling isn't your strong SUIT 😂
As someone who is starting and was having troubles at drawing characters (me), I'm really thankfull for the idea of 64 of 64, I thought smaller meant that the character was more easier to be drawn
That was great. Thank you so much!
You forgot to link the Kickstarter in the description
Thanks fixed it
God that outro and end-bit was treacherous.
I have finished the playlist of Pixel art 101, and now I am in the GB playlist ! ^^
nice! keep at it
Hi Pete, I found you through Casey Faris, and now I've watched almost all your tutorials :D Thanks for all the knowledge! Hoping Dwerve comes to the Switch!
Awesome, thank you!
I suffer badly from size creep, my last project started at 208x200 and ended up at 832x800, it kind of got out of hand. I suck at scaling things, its worse in isometric.
Also unless Twitter needs it to be an animated GIF specifically you don't need an extra frame, under export file, next to the file name you can change the file type to GIF (among others) and save some space :)
Can someone convince this man we need a jameGam in his honour! (notices incorrect spelling, proceeds to post... *DevLyfe*)
Interesting, looks like there's two groups in pixel sprites community, 15x15 vs 16x16.
Me seeing the title of this video: clicking like before watching.
What size canvas would you use if you were designing a character select portrait?
I appreciate your presence
you don't need to add a frame to save something as a gif. you just go to "save as" in the menu and change the file type to gif.
"If you want to make your own games, but if you are Here I mean YOU PROVABLY DO"
Me, drawing pixel art just because of the artistic value of it: I guess Im a game designer now.
yes lol
Pixel art + RPG Maker = Win
I don't even make pixel art but I still watch these tutorials!
Your videos have improved so much! Watching for that 55k mark 👀👀👀
Hello I’ve recently started exploring pixel art to try to learn and make art for my boyfriends game. I’ve made a tile set and started to work on characters in a sprite how do u make the characters fit inside a 16 by 16 if the character sprites are larger ? Or are made of more pixel like 32 by 32
i got admited to computer science and until i start my calsses i want to learn a lot of pixel art , and you help a looooooooooooooooooooooooooot , thanks Pete :D
That's awesome!
use say you can't upload GB Studio games to steam. Is that a licensing thing or steam doesn't take EXE files?
"Please pay for this game engine" "no thanks"
Unity, Unreal and GB Studio are free...
definitly getting gb studio!
Interesting note you can put basic math operations in the canvas size inputs of aseprite. So you could put 16*30, 9*30 for example.
A very useful video, this is, but in my opinion Godot would be a better choice than Unity, especially because of the fact that it's open source.
no theres nothing better about godot.
@@PeterMilko I have to disagree with you when it comes to how well it makes 2d games and how customizable it is, but I respect your opinion.
Unity is a bigger company and unity can do way more than Godot and always will
@@PeterMilko once again, I respect your opinion. I just like the idea of using Godot better.
(Also, bigger company doesn't equal better product. By those standards, the Modern Sonic games would be considered "better" than Indie games.)
Hey! This was a super informative video! Thank you so much for this!
I got a question regarding how you do map building, do you draw/build you maps in aesprite and then export it into unity, Or do you draw tile sets, and build the map using the unity palette?
@NothingAnimated Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the collision object after I posted.
Cheers
Yeah I make them in Unity so it's easy to modify
this guys the goat
Awesome video, explains and helps a LOT. Just wondering, when importing to Unity, should all objects have the same "pixels per unit" value?
ye
I dont understand why tile size should be like 8, 16, 32.... pixel, what kind of problem will I encounter if I make it 20x20?
Usually people use tile maps to draw the background / floor so you just need to make sure your player can fit between the grid spaces.
i think libre sprite is the free version of this software
Great video! Quick random question; is there a reason y'all opted to have 2 circle colliders on the tree sprite as opposed to a capsule collider which might play nicer with horizontal movement?
We are using older version of unity. The capsole collider Is 3d
I use an Engine without a Capsule Collider, so I always place a Rectangle Collider between the two circles until it makes a capsule shape.
why dont you use one capsule collider instead of two circles on the trees? :)
capsule collider is a 3d collider
Pixel Pete isn’t there a 2d one? docs.unity3d.com/Manual/class-CapsuleCollider2D.html
Amazing video Pete!
How do you cut the necromancer sprite sheet where the sprites are bleeding? You do it manually?
I set the default sprite size to the largest sprite in the sheet. The other sprites have a buffer.
How big should a background be for a game?
Best is any size that is a 16:9 aspect ratio. You need to look up small sizes online.
Hello! May I ask? Is your "Dwerve" game characters also 16x16 or are they 32x32?
you can't sell on steam with GB studio? wtf what's the point then?
i know right, i agree. We have to wait for the developers to add more export options.
I'm not sure how I feel about not being able to sell the games we make using GB studio.
Why is it that we can't? Also, even though the games can't be sold on Steam, could they still be released on Steam as long as they're free?
You cant upload them to steam. thats why Unity is so good. Its cross platform.
@@PeterMilko Wait, this implies that I severely misunderstood what you meant. Where would it be possible to upload games made with GB studio, and are we allowed to sell them (Or do the Name Your Price thing)?
The intro sound teleported me back to 2014 when I started playing League of Legends xD
i remember those days
Godot is free too
apparently i suck
(btw, do a callenge where you say WELCOOOME BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCKKKK as long as you can)
5:41 😮
Does anyone know a free game engine that runs on potato pcs and has few to no limitations?
I know how to program in GMS2 and boy, I wish i've seen this video earlier. GMS2 Studio require knowledge of a completely different programming language for making visual effects. It's so frustrating that, even in construct you can make some effects that are totally hard to do in GMS2.
Name app pls
I need learn more! 😖 😄
LoL with that intro
bro, furniture video, or you a fake viewer
man dwerve is very hard so i think it's bad (but you pixel art very very very very good ı love game grafic)
