Great video Saul! Also I'd like to point out again that CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Consistency is what makes an artstyle, each one of those principles Saul mentioned CAN be used, but doesn't have to (like he mentioned with the outlines, you can use them, or you don't have to). Consistency is why the piece at 12:36 works well, the artist "broke a rule" of orphan pixels, but he broke it everywhere, thus creating an interesting style!

I don't think you have to do that; you could start out with the cluster pixel rule then fade towards not having it around the edges.
Generally consistency is key but look at styles like pizza tower; pretty messy looking but still unique and neat looking.
A doctor, firefighter,teacher,army,social worker,chef,detective,police,producer and now an artist. There's nothing the man can't do

The one thing I love about pixel art is that you don't really have to be a great artist to turn good at it. Drawing was absolutely never my strength, still I took up pixel art for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I'm learning a lot and can see progress in what I do. Still very very noob ofc, but here's these awesome tutorials to help us with that :D thanks to all pixel artists who put effort and care into teaching us newbies all about this awesome pixel art world

Same here, ik practice makes perfect, I just didn't have the passion. I've kept thinking about how I'd love to make something using my writing skills and perhaps music since it's something I do have passion for, the visual medium felt like a gaping hole I'd have to pay someone to fill. Well, I just decided to try pixel art and I feel really hopeful that in maybe a few years I could make some kind of proper media all on my own now

What's funny about this is that a huge portion of it is just a really great introduction to illustration/painting concepts in general. The color theory and discussions of contrast, etc, are just things you'll learn in your first few months of art school. Really great video.

Really when I went to school in Hong Kong, I went to a school where I probably was learning stuff like shading, proportion, elements of art and principles of design. Not sure when y’all learn this but I learnt it in Grade 6, or my first year of secondary/middle school.
@@tc09022 The quality of public education in the United States varies wildly based on where you live. In rich suburban areas, the quality of education can be top tier, as good an education as you'll get anywhere in the world.
In middle-class and especially poor areas, particularly underfunded, over-crowded inner-city schools, they'll basically try to teach you how to read, do some algebra, give you the "USA is great and has never lost a war" version of history, and send you out into the world.

It's really hard to find pixel art tutorials. And this one looks to be one of the best ones. I've already got a few years of experience, and I still managed to learn quite a few new things. I especially like the clear, direct terminology. Which makes it easier to break down art made by others, or to explain why I've made a sprite a certain way to others. Thanks!

This is a great video for starting art in general even. You also mentioned a lot of good tips for people who aren’t beginners to art. I get caught up on mental “rules”, and when you included the part where you deleted one pixel on the wizard’s hat to help with readability, something clicked in my head. Thanks for the video!

I draw traditionally and digitally and was always interested in pixel art, this helps me to demystify it a bit. And it's a great tutorial for art fundamentals too. A lot of stuff in the video can totally be used for drawing in general.
Making random shapes then refining them to something cool is really fun I got to admit! And also Aseprite is very nice, I personally use it for all my pixel are stuff. Good tutorial!

Wow! I've watched a couple pixel art tutorials with high production value that were boring and unhelpful for beginners. They just lay out 'rules' without exploring how the art changes with them.

this was... surprisingly helpful, wow! i've watched so many pixel art tutorials by now, trying to find ways to improve my sel-out, hueshifted artstyle, and the explanation of value, dithering and "light bouncing" shed some new light on the difficulties i was having. i think this deserves the title as the ultimate pixel art tutorial indeed, hah

Thanks! I'm starting a project of a simple Gameboy Color game and this really helped! I haven't touched pixel art since I envied pixel artists who would make custom trainer and Pokemon images back on Pokemon role play fan forums in about 2006-2008 lol, so this helped a lot as a starting point!

i haven't heard a lot of people talk about converting a 3D model that you could pose however you want or animate and than edit it in aseprite for example. It saves so much time.
Yeah this technique is especially useful for top down movement where you might have 8 different directions of movement :)

This is the kind of tutorial I find most useful, like sure, I want to learn about color palettes, but I’m already good at that, but what are the kinds of lines and curves and how should I use them? How do I outline things properly? How do I prevent too much noise? None of the other tutorials I go to have this kind of stuff. Great tutorial man.

I just got into game dev and since I've been watching game code videos I've seen this video recommended multiple times. I finally watched it and holy shit this video is so good. This guide is awesome, i like that each section is fast paste and tell the important thing in it, it helps not loose focus on the entire video. It is very informative, i learned a lot and it was entertaining to watch. I like the fact you take this wizard as an exemple for the whole video as well, it helps with consistancy and we don't get lost!

This is such a good tutorial.
There are way too many tutorials where someone tries to explain the one way they create art while showing bad examples of how NOT to do something and more often than not I even prefer the bad example. This often discourages me, making me believe that my taste is just so bad that I'll never be able to create something others like.
You only told us what effects different methods have and how it can be bad if its done unintentionally, while showing examples of how to utilizing it to make incredible art.
This is such a positive approach and I love it.
Yeah I try to keep an open mind with techniques. I’ve seen some incredible art which uses what some may consider bad, and I think by understanding the effect these techniques have allows you to use them effectively. You kind of limit yourself to a specific art style if you see something as good or bad, and good and bad is subjective so I don’t think it’s so effective to teach that as that would just be my opinion. haha thank you! In regards to your question, it all comes down to style consistency. For different things to appear cohesive they should share similar style attributes, including, but not limited to: value ranges, saturations, and colours palettes, shape language, outline style (if any)... :) I'll probably make a video exclusively on style at some point in the future

Starting to learn pixel art right now and haven't really even attempted art in general in like 8 years. "Jaggies" are definitely the biggest problem I have right now. Learning circles will come next lol. Also, thank goodness you explained hue, saturation, etc. Watched tutorials that talked about good strategies with the direction of each of these values.... but I didn't actually know what it meant to change hue, saturation, etc until now.
Thanks Mr. Magic, I appreciate the kind words! Yeah, Jaggies take a little getting used to but when you get it, you will start to use them effectively or remove them if it's not working. A lot of pixel work I find to be iterative, where you will need to trust the process and continually tweak it until you get it closer to how you want it. Best of luck with your learning!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Saultoons! This is everything i needed to get started making pixel games in unreal. I've made so many high graphic games with free 3D assets, but it just doesn't feel as rewarding as making/animating my own art from scratch. With my digital art tablet kaput and only enough money to but a Smasung Tablet, I was discouraged in my digital art progress. When I was recommended pixel art, it really spoke to me.
Thank you for this video, I now have more understanding and confidence going into my work! Pixel art is something within my reach and this video showed just how fun it can be, even with all the technical knowledge behind it!

I was in a similar situation when my hand started hurting from digital art freelancing, I switched over from drawing tablets and digital to pixel art and have loved it!
