"All art is a struggle. Forever. Always." Never a truer word spoken.
You probably haven't heard many words in school because you don't seem to know the difference between a word and a phrase.

About color palettes:
When you start, don't try to master everything the color wheel have to offer. Focus on *analogous* colors. That's what's shown in the video. The simple rule is that *once you choose a base color the shadow go toward "cold" colors, and highlight goes toward "warm" colors* . It's a simple enough rule to get started, then it's up to you to build your artistic sense.
good tip :)
Thank you!

This was the best pixel art tutorial ever not only because of the useful resources provided (I LOVE Miniboss's references), but also due to how much more inspired and motivated I am after watching this. And honestly? The getting into the right mindset part is something that I have never seen before and am probably never going to see again, but heck, was it just what I needed.
What a superb vid this is! I am a complete novice in this field and this short twenty mins has highlighted so much, it's mind boggling, but in a fantastically exciting way.
The different graphic styles alone are an education in themselves but the whole idea of just looking around you to see how nature does it and then how to translate that into pixel art - it just blew me away.
Massively informative, intuitive and very well put together. Just superb. Many thanks for uploading - this will be a great point of reference.
I must say, probably the best 20 minute beginner tutorial you can find on youtube for pixel art. It gives you all the neceseray information to start and a good motivetional spech for beginners like me ! thank you very much :)
As an artist, I appreciate how much this video teaches. It’s very thoughtful and focuses a lot on the art theories that matter. Fantastic video!
This legit changed everything,I recommend watching from the beginning to the end because every second of this video was worth my while. Thanks for everything x)!
This is exactly the video I was looking for - even though I didn't know it yet. Thank you for the highly educational and informative information in a stylized and fun way to present it. What's more, is that you direct us to others' highly valuable information, passing along the knowledge that you've gained in your journey. I can't thank you enough.
Been a hobbyist pixel artist/game developer for a while now, and while there are more tutorials out there that go into more depth on even the technical things you discussed in the video, I learned more in the last 20 minutes than I have in a long time. Your way of looking at things is so pure and simple but it cuts right through the bs into the important things. (And trust me, I have a BA in bs. I know what I'm talking about :P) Fantastic work! Hope to see more.
Buddy, this video was highly motivational and for me personally way beyond something titled as "Beginner Pixel Art Tutorial - A Complete Guide". Thanks from the heart bro.
I just finished up your 2D unity platformer tutorial and I don't know how you don't have more viewers. The content was great and the way you taught was perfect for me! I am just starting to jump into learning pixel art myself, so I am super excited to see this video! Keep up the great work and don't get discouraged! You have some great content.
Thanks friend. That encouragement is really timely!
@@AlvinRoe It's fnny how that happens. The words we need to hear the most always seem to come at the time we need them the most, huh?

Hello Aleksey - Sorry to ask right away. Are you interested in joining a Gamejam next month? We are looking for an artist for our game.

Very well done and said! Thank you for the inspiration and motivation Alvin! Let's get it done!
Yes! We're going to make amazing things, friend!
Thanks Alvin. That was an awesome tutorial. 👍
i ran out of tea today
What a great video! a much needed talk on priorities I was starting to get into the "make every single tileset and and animation needed" mindset instead of actually making the game.
Thanks for the references, but even more thanks for the mindset.
The fact that you can distinguish the eye from other body parts in the "noob" pixek art on the thumbnail, shows that you don't need much colours to make good pixel art.
Why when I need to have a tutorial about a subject you always make a video about it :D Love your content please keep it up, you're an hidden gem of UA-cam :)
That's really nice friend! Thanks so much!
He sounds like a sarcastic/sassy therapist and I love it
This was much more wholesome than I expected from a pixel art tutorial video. Great stuff dude!
Thank you Alvin for a brilliant video. The hard work and passion you put into it really shines and it had so many amazing moments of inspiration and realisation for me. That poem at the end about art was just incredible, I was expecting you to say it was from some famous poem at the end and when you didnt I was like wtf that was his own words?! this was the first video result I got from my google search and you put into words so many concepts that I felt but couldn't explain. you really helped me, thank you
Amazing video! There were many games in there, but unfortunately I only recognized Stardew Valley and Hyper Light Drifter. Would you mind sharing the names of the others? Thanks so much!
Undungeon was one of them, even though I don’t think it’s out yet it’s look really nice
To anyone who is wanting to become an indie game developer:
*Good luck!* I'm thinking about making a game aswell, however I think it'd just be a side thing. I've been doing normal art for a few years but I think it'd be a lot easier to do pixel art instead of normal art. I'm also gonna have to learn how to code which is gonna suck, but hey, if I can at least try, you can probably do it! :)
If you go with Unreal Engine + Blueprints you won't need to code except you are going for some completely groundbreaking mechanics. Just drag and drop stuff. But there is the possibility to write your own physics and such in C++ but as I said, I don't really think it is necessary except for the own ego.
I recently found out that the most successful indie games are made by people with a lot of experience from working in large studios.
Also, you might like Gdevelop, it's the easiest to use game engine I've tried, and it's free. You can only make 2D games. though.
Try Godot. Its free and open-source. And if you are going for profit, you wouldn't bottleneck you're income
hey, I'm on the other side haha, I program but I haven't touched a pencil to draw in decades
@@andresgrimminck8674 same here brother. Full time programmer, with the artistic skills of a rotten orange. Ordered a cheap p.o.s drawing tablet from aliexpress last week and reading on art fundamentals and ruining a lot of scrap paper with cheap pens. Gotta invest in myself to get something back.
Well, thank you so much for this tutorial! Not only am I going to start taking the right steps towards getting good at pixel art but I'm also now rethinking how I should look at pixel art and game design.

thank you for introducing me to miniboss. out of all of the tutorials i’ve watched this one has been one of the best. thank you.
So far I have never stumbled upon information like "Rules for creating outlines" etc which is just vital information that I have been looking for. Thank you.
I love the style of your videos, giving practical information about the technical topic with sprinkles of thoughtful reasoning. I have been trying to make a game for a while but have always gotten stuck at the art. Time to try again!

Great tutorial, man. That last part was super motivating!
People like you deserve millions of subs. Just starting out on my 2D game development journey and can't stop watching anything you upload.
I'm not even an game dev, but I have a big love for pixel art graphics! I normally do normal scale digital art, but pixel art is very fun to learn to do myself! Even if many pixelart tutorials are meant for games, I still appreciate all of them since that's the look I'm going for. It really is a fun hobby of mine, but I decided to get Aseprite anyway, so I looked up help and tutorials and happened to find yours, haha. Really helped me to get in a better mindset!
Like many people have said, you have a very soothing voice that lets me absorb all the information better. Thank you very much, this has been very helpful!

Jeez, I came here to learn the bare basics to start working with pixel art, ended up learning about life. I hope the motivation you just gave me sticks out for long enough for me to learn this new skill. Will make sure to come back here often to remember what it is that I'm doing. Sincerely, thank you for this.
This helped me with a lot of questions! All great suggestions, I especially like the mini boss site! Thanks for making great content.
Came back to the video after applying everything you talked about. It’s the perfect video for someone starting out in my opinion. Helped me go from zero to level 3 goblin - not quite the protagonist yet but I’m levelling up. But in all seriousness, I have been using assets from unity store for a long time as I never thought I had any artistic ability but this video helped me a lot. I grinded and I’m making art that is somewhat game worthy so thanks a lot. Hope you have a nice day!
Came here for a tutorial but now I feel more motivated than ever to pursue my dreams of creating art and stories. That was an awesome tutorial and the ending was so nice.

Hey Alvin!
Just wanted to say thanks for the video! Not only for the great advice and references, hearing you talk about art really inspired me.
Its easy to forget where to begin when making art and it is passion! Find a feeling so passionate you just must express it no matter how hard it can be to do so.
I forgot that so thank you.
Bro, the passion in this tutorial filled me with so much inspiration.
Great advice, and I love your prose about the importance and beauty of art. One thing I always tell people is they get caught up in the tutorial loop they rely on other people's creativity and what they solved they never do work on their own.
Very inspirational video! I've been up all night working on art but I think I will be changing my workflow up a bit now. A new day dawns and I am excited to make my first level! Thank you!
