    Low potassium is the likely cause of exercised-induced muscle cramps. Potassium is necessary for the brain to send messages to the muscles, so low potassium can lead to muscle weakness. Muscle contraction and relaxation is about calcium. Calcium attaches to certain receptors on the muscle and makes it contract, and then the brain sends the signal to reuptake the calcium off of the receptor so that the muscle can relax. If that signal is unsuccessful because of low potassium, a muscle cramp occurs. Magnesium competes with calcium for attaching itself to the contraction-causing muscle receptors, so in the sleep state, sufficient magnesium will bind to those receptors before calcium can and prevent night cramps. Potassium and magnesium walk hand in hand in preventing cramps. Get both to optimal levels.

    • @cyclamengarden
      @cyclamengarden 2 роки тому

      I associate calcium with contraction and magnesium with relaxation. I agree. K and Mg go hand in hand. If the body is severely deficient in magnesium, it won't be able to hold on to enough potassium.

    There are ten or so different forms of magnesium supplements as well as magnesium oils. So it is a matter of horses for courses to select the one for a particular condition. Magnesium is essential in the formation of ATP from glucose and it is now considered that Alzheimer's may be type III diabetes of the brain due to poor glucose metabolism. The only magnesium supplements to cross the blood-brain barrier are in amino form - l-taurate, threonine, and glycinate whereas others such as orate have a specific effect on heart function. Magnesium is well absorbed through the skin such that for muscle problems a bath with magnesium sulphate or a magnesium oil rub is effective.

    After my stroke, my neurologist has me on 1200 mg daily. Take malate form or you can get the runs. Magnesium Threonate turned my brain back on. This form of magnesium crosses the brain blood barrier and is expensive.

    Hi Dr Sam, thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching them. Question: I have trouble getting to sleep at night, do I need to take a magnesium supplement to help with this?

      If you pair it with l- threonate it works tenfold! Also zinc helps it absorb.

    Thanks very much for your discussion about magnesium. I've been aware of my need for more magnesium in my diet for several years, but I've had no idea how to get magnesium from food sources, except from cabbage; therefore, I have been using supplements for several years.
    Your video is the first video I've seen that has provided me with such a complete explanation of the need for magnesium and the various sources from which I can get the amount that I need to live a healthier life.
    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    Thank you for asking Sam. I love your channel, your knowledge, and integrity against the lies that are being pumped out as if it is medical knowledge. Please speak on ATP, and if it is possible to increase it naturally in our body.. Please address the supplements we require in our 60's and 70's, iincluding which ones are most important for improved cognitive function.

    I’ve heard that stress and chronic anxiety can deplete magnesium, which anecdotally was the case with me. Mag supplements along with lowering my stress largely eliminated my main symptom of ectopic heart beats (palpitations).
