Wildcat Defender 110: Unleashing the 600HP V8 Beast | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

- Опубліковано 30 чер 2024
- In this episode, Iain takes on a unique project, preparing a customer's extraordinary Wildcat Defender 110 for sale. At first glance, it might seem like nothing more than heavily body-kitted Land Rover Defender 110, but this vehicle is far from a simple parts-catalogue creation.
The Wildcat's transformation from a standard Defender 110 is nothing short of spectacular. The original Ford Duratorq 2.2-litre diesel engine has been replaced with a Chevrolet LS3 6.3-litre V8.
But Wildcat didn't stop there; they supercharged the engine to produce over 600 brake horsepower. To handle this immense power, significant upgrades have been made to the brakes, transmission, suspension, and steering.
As part of the preparation, Korrey replaces a leaking fuel pipe to ensure the car is mechanically sound, while Alex works on making the engine bay as visually impressive as it is powerful.
But the question on everyone's mind is, how does it perform? Iain takes the Wildcat Defender on a thorough road test, sharing his insights on this incredible machine and letting us hear the thrilling roar of the V8.
Join Iain as he dives into the meticulous preparation and exhilarating road test of this extraordinary Defender, blending immense power with eye-catching details. Don't miss out on seeing this beast in action!

Kardashian spec couldn't have been more descriptive 👍
HE WAS BEING DIPLO MATIC OF COURSE
@@michaelfraser5723indeed, hate these awful things 😒 and what they represent. I wonder who the original owner was? Jay Kay? He seems to be flogging off a lot of his collection in recent years.
Brutal! 😂
Ted 2 springs to mind.
Grown man attempts informative and impartial review of a curious motor vehicle. Grown man ends up grinning like a Cheshire Cat (even though just over the border😉). Grown man ends up buying aforementioned vehicle…..? A hugely entertaining film and great to see how much you clearly enjoyed the experience Iain.
I think that grin on your face when you step on it is exactly the reason why this vehicle was made.
4.13 nooooo, digress all you like! That bit about Rolls electric gear motor never failing is incredible
I suspect it will drink more than you and your six mates will drink in the pub just getting to the pub 😂
Mr Tyrell, I was given the opportunity this year on my 30th birthday to drive my best friend‘s 740ish bhp, 2015, manual Pro charged Camaro SS with the LS3 and the track package with the Brembo brakes. And it flat out changed my life, my reaction was much the same as yours, surprise, and how accessible and easy it was to drive, and just pure, smiles The entire time! With the handling from wider tires and stance it was nothing short of life-changing. That engine when supercharged/cammed is to me the best power there is
Keep smiling, Mr Tyrrell.
Variation is certainly the spice of life.
I always look forward to see what you and your team are fettling.
That’s the biggest grin I have ever seen from Mr. Tyrrell while on a test drive!
UA-cam subtitles welcomed us to "the Troll's classic workshop". Have to say, the trolls are doing very well indeed.
A car that makes Iain Tyrrell laugh out loud? Now I want one.
That's one fantastic machine! One of the things I always liked about the old Land Rover Defender was its relatively understated looks which meant it aged fairly well. Today's G-Wagens look very garish unlike the earlier ones.
Reminds me of the time I pulled up at the lights in a V8 Commodore SS (5ltr) next to an old Landrover which promptly beat the hell out of me. Absolutely nothing gave away what was under its bonnet. I swear I can still hear the driver laughing.
These workshop diaries are very endearing, I really enjoy this series.
That quote ('no replacement for displacement') is attributed to many people, and I vote for WO Bentley when Sir Tim Birkin suggested a boost to the 4 1/2 engine.
Your smiles betray your feelings, Iain. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Tempted by the Dark Side?
🎶Iain wants a Wildcat🎶
🎶Iain wants a Wildcat🎶
😂
As a former LSA owner, the supercharged LS provides torque like 9 liter would. Put the stock grille back on, some resonators 👍paint those wheels dark silver gunmetal.
"Hello. Welcome to Tyrell's LS swap shop. You may recall we restored and repaired classic cars, but I had a meeting with angels and they showed me the way of the LS. From here on out we will LS swap everything and anything"
A one- off, I assure you!😂
@iain_tyrrell Yeah yeah!! 😂
Love this build!! In America we only got the 2 door old school Defenders and putting in a LS engine is a pretty common conversion. Just easier to get parts for and get worked on than a 5 liter Jaguar V8 which is also a common conversion here. We just like those big engines for all day high speed interstate driving
Iain, despite your many reservations about this heavily modified Defender, it was plain to see you enjoyed the test drive!
Pull up to the service station " check the oil and water and change the half shafts please "
Crazy car.
Cracks in the tyre wall are slightly concerning!
Holy Moly!! 😮 followed by the widest grin I’ve seen on Iain’s face in a long while. Says all you need to know 😃
Myself and my Mrs have never seen you smile so much driving any car. By the pleasure on your face, looking like an 11 year old who has just got a Scalextric for Xmas, I think you should buy it for yourself. Again, we have never seen you look so happy.
We had the light coat of black paint problem on a 20 year old Nissan Micra, bought new. The floor pan was detached all down one side. Engine etc, perfect. Sad loss.
That Land Rover is quite a machine.
Not my piece of cake. Football players or South American importers, if you know what i mean,
will like this car for sure. Regards from Spain. Eduardo.
Fantastic video. One of the greatest delights is never knowing just what vehicle you’ll share. Your complete honesty in how any which one makes you feel and your opinions good or bad…. And mostly your clear passion!! As always… we learn something (many many things) in every video and dull they are NOT!!!!
Thank you Sir Tyrrell
Ps I saw my first Miura out in the wild last weekend on the outskirts of East Grinstead, Sussex at a junction and it blew me away 😂😂… god the sound and tininess. A red P400 that looked unrestored… FABULOUS ❤
I think this is one of my favourite videos of yours, your genuine joy whilst driving it absolutely makes it, plus thats sound! Wow! ❤
Fantastic! In the workshop Ian says he'll take it for a run... but be circumspect. Gets it on the road and totally loses himself in it!
I can tell Ian is having great fun.
Love it. You may have inadvertently passed your US citizenship test on that drive, Land Rover or not, happily flogging that LS ppwertrain. Cybertruck drive in Wyoming next? All the best
It's a stunning vehicle but has all the elegance of a brick being thrown down the road.
Nothing wrong with the looks. It's the engine.
I learned to drive in Land Rovers, even the V8 3.5 was nothing like that. Fantastic car
Well that was amazing and I love it.. that noise is something else.
Those cars are the ultimate proof that money and good taste don’t necessarily go together 😅
😂 And neither do “good manners”.
@@wolfdog7265 that’s for sure 😅
Well I think it's great. I want one.
Like putting lipstick on a pig. 😂
It's like putting lipstick on a pig. 😂
Tyrell I would buy this in a heartbeat, lol, my funds aren't cleared yet. I love it-wow, I see you Did enjoy it a lot, lol by your chuckle. great review as ever & fabulous Virtual Ride., thanks for sharing. what a video. I can see you loved it, lol.
I love your videos and Cooper Tires, I think this is the first time I've seen them here. Cheers!
Much love Tyrrell! Thank you.
That is fantastic Iain I was laughing along with you when you stuck your boot into it
When I do that in my Ute which is only 400 hp I say it’s making its angry noise and it makes me smile too
You certainly need to put some better mufflers on it, it doesn’t need the that loud
I let mine change on the red line it sounds even better 😂😂😂
I’m not really convinced that an old shape defender can handle 600 plus horsepower and really be stable or safe Well, that’s what I think anyway, and reckon is a very brave man that’s going to put it to the test!
Such a terrific sound!!!
Sounds absolutely glorious!!! ❤❤
YES, very different this time, but really interesting😍
Thanks for sharing Sir IAIN, Love your channel😍😍😍
Stay Safe👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video, always nice to see something a bit different!
Definitely on occassion post silly fun one's like this again! 😊An engaging Tyrrell's Classic Workshop Video watching Iain having some good old fun!
I’ve never seen you so happy on a test drive and you putting your foot down so many times 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Perfect specification 110 Defender, I’d love one just like that ❤😊
That must be terrifying to drive 😂
Many years ago a friend brought an Overfinch Range Rover with a 6.3 Corvette engine which used to run so hot that the windscreen water jets produced steam !
Great fun and a real novelty.
I have a friend in the states who has put an LS engine in a 54 Chevy Belair. Its a cheap way of bolting in a lot of horse power with good reliability and good fuel economy. You end up with a good turn key hot rod. Personally it leaves me a bit cold as I love the old pushrod V8's with a good 4 barrel carb and lumpy cam. Less horse power poor fuel economy but bags of appeal for me.
Nice to see you having fun in a traditional English car that is custom made.
Hard to describe it?
It makes your manly bits tingle like a 14 year old schoolboy looking at Playboy magazine.
Proper driving attire includes a big fat cigar, a full ash tray , McDonald's bags, ketzup pacs and wrapers blowing around the interior. French fries stuck in the power seat tracks. I think you chaps call this a footballers rude ride.
Cheers ✌️🇺🇲
Definitely an interesting scenario!
I enjoyed that, but probably not as much as you enjoyed making it!
What a mad mad thing!
After all the nice, efficient, quiet cars I've had, the most loveable were the Rover 105S which I wish I still had (UFH 284 are you about somewhere?) and the Landrover 110 TD5 SW that I still have. Trailers, floods, dogs, mud, snow, whatever you ask it will do. I even find it comfortable and though it is not quiet I like the sound of it. I always look forward to driving it.
Certainly a different level of performance from the 110 tdi which my brother once owned! Well done on mentioning the subject of rust. It’s amazing how little paint manufacturers apply to things you don’t see. You spurred me on to apply some lanoguard to the underside of the Mercedes I bought new 4 years ago. As you’d hope it’s still like new underneath but that’s the time to do it! A relative recently went through the rigmarole of replacing a corroded subframe on an otherwise tidy BMW Z4. Not a job you’d want to do unless you really have to!
The smile on your face says it all! How can that be wrong 👍
Never seen him smile so much. If etiquette allowed I'd say he should own this one.
Mad Max Tyrrell
Holy Moly that is insane.
Sounds like the motor has spark boot protectors or sleeves. They are made of various materials, titanium, basalt fiber. Ls1tech and corvetteforum will have feedback. Summit racing and Improved Racing carry various versions. Improved Racing is a very capable business, the last time I talked to them, the technical support person sounded more like you than me. Exchaust manifolds / header can route the pipes close to the ingition wires, especially on cylinders 1 and 2. Many of us have had good results with NGK spark plugs even the standard copper variants.
Thanks for that
Nuts. Love it..
MAGNIFICENT 😊
Sounds like the chase scene from ‘Bullit’
V8 no sound like it👍👍👍
Boy, how you enjoyed that Land Rover, Ian - laughing your head off and speechless at times...!..I’ll stick to my 300tdi from the last 30 years..!
Good evening lain . I understand that Iain Tyrrells Classic Workshop has recently purchased a replacement parts delivery /collection vehicle after a thorough road test 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Iain .
During one of your accelerations, I noticed a cow in the distance had an instant miscarriage. LOL -
You answered my question. Wow, something else!
Chrysler introduced its pushbutton automatic shifter in 1956, and continued selling cars with this feature through the 1964 model year
I general have "good taste"... but I don't know... I guess sometimes the occasional bit of gauche tickles my heart like this unit does. The Goudy G-Wagons they can keep... this looks like a bit of fun.
I live in the "rust belt" of New England (northeast corner of USA)... this is due to the use of salt and salt/sand combinations on the roads in the winter. Undercarriage car washes are a continual necessity and undercoating is of great importance.
Hmmm- I suspect it wouldn’t last long at all!
I think government discourage us actually enjoying our motoring, they want us all to be creeping around in electric golf carts, but this is what motoring used to be, enjoying the drive on a road trip, very many thanks for posting this wonderful video, it all looks good, apart that is from the bling seats, they look like the cheap and nasty things we would see in a Mercedes. Stay happy! Chris B.
I hope we see more content on that Ferrari Daytona behind this oOOFF🙏
Already covered in a previous vid. Enjoy!
Thats a very big smile 😀
I'm definitely on the 'Ooohhhh that's wonderful!!' side 😅😅
Worth a watch just to see the ear to ear grin on Ian's face!
must be good never seen Iain laugh so much
LS powered Defenders are becoming quite popular now. I’m putting a 5.3 in my ‘85 Ninety. I would be a bit concerned with that much power going to cracked tyres though!
Love it 👌🏻😎
Those brief flybys reminded me of my last visit to former RAF Duxford…….. being buzzed by vintage warplanes…… 🥳🇬🇧
Tally Ho !!
I miss my old Slla SWB ex desert pink panther, that some clown had painted green 🥺 and still have an old 280 GES auto in mat green……..
Iain, I thoroughly enjoyed your review of this beast "for the man who has everything".
Yes if I bought it I'd make some changes, the exhaust to a switch quieter/antisocial type to pee off the annoying scrum with their golf/audi/merc pop bang crappp.
And it certainly make you chuckle in the process 🙃
Wonderful.
I guess you could call that a brute of a Land Rover Iain, it looks to be a nicely presented conversion and one could suppose also comes without a lot of the "foibles" of the original engine and gearbox but of course just a "toy", an indulgence.
I belive the first push-button automatic was from Chrysler. Some Facel Vega’s had Chrysler engines and transmission.
So i think thats the connection with the push-buttons on FV’s.
Good luck finding anyone to work on it except some place like Iain's shop.
Wouldn't want anyone working on it except some place like Iain's shop.
Arkonik, Bowler, Twisted, Mahker - loads of companies doing modded Defenders. Agreed Iain will take it to another level though.
The 1957 DeSoto also had the same type of shifter. Nickname was typewriter shifter
Quite restrained for a Kahn. It should have had upgraded half shafts fitted with the engine conversion, but they are easy enough to fit with upgraded diff's or axles too. Cooper tyres get surface cracking at a couple of years old, but nothing to worry about.
I just bought a new Citroen van, and much to my surprise, it has no topcoat paint underneath at all. Just seam sealer and what looks like primer. From what I've read and been told by a neighbour who paints cars and vans, it's common now on many vehicles, and was a trend started by Mazda. They don't seem to have any reputation for rusting, but nothing over the primer and seam sealer underneath just doesn't seem right. I think I'm going to take all the wheel arch liners out and waxoyl everything. It has no clear coat over the non visible painted parts (door shuts, etc) either.
Honestly dont understand why people love defenders, to me they are just farm vehicles that people buy to show country wealth, this thing is definately not for me but it is testament to iains videos that i still enjoy him talking about cars i don't like.
🙏
Country Wealth in an OG Defender?? 😅😅
Maybe a Range Rover. But a defender?
What cars do you like if you don't like cars that show Wealth?
The body and steering control are very impressive, but that exhaust system is just way too loud for me as well, the interior and especially the leather dash looks great, I suspect that the gallons per mile would make it a Sunday only vehicle and you wouldn’t want to start it up before the neighbours had gone on holiday 😅👍🏻🏴
This is one of those cars that I shouldn't like. But watching that old LR with that sound and power instantly made me understand what I friend once said; "I don't know what the question is, but I do know that Big Block is the answer".
What I forgot to mention is I noticed the car has a diesel fuel gauge. Strange as there was a petrol model available. I would have thought all the money and time spent on this they could have at least swapped the diesel fuel gauge for a petrol one.
Theres no substitute for cubic capacity 👍
The grin says it all , it’s the same one I have when I drive my new defender V8 , although it’s down on power at only 518bhp 😂
Thanks for sharing, the close up of the wheel seemed to show some serious weather checking on the tire..
Standard for Cooper tyres over 12 months old.
Haven't watched the video yet, but this is exactly what I would love to do as a restomod of an old defender. First thought of it about twenty years ago, never had the time or resources to do it though. Anyway, my f Pace SVR is probably better, though not as cool looking. Looking forward to watching this video, I always enjoy them.
I would like to see a comparation between this car and the special series from Land Rover of the Defender fitted with its own 5.0L V8 supercharged.
It doesn't need a hifi chain.
Thank you very much, Sir.
Iain, coincidentally I recently took Der Mercedes-Benz AMG Biturbo Gelandewagen (All Terrain Automobile a.k.a G-Wagen) for a test drive & your vehicle is basically the Brit version of it. ;)
Digress...... blimey!
That sound is just addictive pure magic. It almost the sound of those great Can Am machine all over again. Thats why EV will never do for me.
The fuel gauge can go from full to empty in 10 minutes.
Great for warm weather - the gauge works as a ventilator. 😉
Check bank account before pushing throttle.
Smiles per gallon 😊
@@andyliv78 Wrong relation - easily beatable by other cars. This one OTOH would win the gallons per smile category. ⛽🤑
Guy Wicks. I had a bog standard V8 Land Rover. At full throttle it was actually possible to see the fuel guage needle moving. 14 mpg on normal driving, single figures when being enthusiastic.
Now then - what a thing! Were there any extra gauges and the like for the engine, Iain? Lots of additional fluids and pressures to monitor, I should imagine…
Oh that was fantastic! I once, with my Range Rover went to Overfinch and had the engine before the major one they used to do and loved the difference! It was not like this one you showed! But I can imagine how you felt 🤣🤣🤣🤣😉
You should compare the stock engine's torque, multiplied through all of the gears, including transfer case in low range, to the new engine's torque multiplied through the current gears, in high range.
I wouldn't be surprised if you discovered the peak torque going through the drivetrain when stock is similar to current peak torque when cruising down the road.
You may not need to be worried if the axles, transfer case, u-joints, cv-joints, drive shafts, axle ½ shafts, etc, can handle the torque.
Will you make an episode so we can see what this beast look's like when you have finished.
