"in a cruel twist of fate, the Britannic also sank into the ocean."
Oh thank you for clarifying that, otherwise I would have thought it sank in Lake Erie or quicksand or something.
    Jesus, Bright Side.

    • @vulpesinculta3238
      @vulpesinculta3238 7 місяців тому +24

The kicker, of course, is that the Britannic did not, in fact, sink in any ocean. It sank in the Aegean, which is a sea (not an ocean) that's part of a bigger sea (not an ocean), the Mediterranean. These seas feed into the Atlantic, but they have their own currents and weather systems and are almost entirely enclosed, so they're not part of the Atlantic.

29:40 there's a show on discovery called drain the oceans where they use sonar mapping to create a detailed computer graphic of a shipwreck, they did this on an episode for the Britannic and also use subs to explore the area around the wreck and one thing they found was an anchor and chain that would have been used to tether a mine in place along with peices of shrapnel about a mile and a half south of Britannics wreck, this for me is as solid proof as it can be that it was a mine that sank the Britannic not a torpedo.

Merry Christmas Sam! I'm already suffering on Christmas cause I'm still somewhat sick and I was unable to visit my family for Christmas this year. I still appreciate you taking time out of your day and killing you brain cells to review Bright Side videos for us! I also have book about the Titanic on hand and I saw a picture of the HMHS Britannic while she was under construction. Timestamp for the particular photo that made me think of this is at 4:28.
Another edit: The RMS Olympic did indeed set sail on her maiden voyage on June 14, 1911. Hope that confirms what you were trying to remember!
Here's another edit: In regards to the RMS (HMT) Olympic during WW1, she did indeed come to the aid of the HMS Audacious.

11:40 Yes, if you look at a transcript of all the wireless messages from that night, Olympic did respond and reverse course. Just seeing all the messages going on, you'd think that it would be the greatest rescue of all time...but then remember what really happened and the last messages are suddenly a horror movie.

I have been watching your videos for a while now and I am truly very impressed with your attention to detail and your drive to do proper research to provide accurate information on all of these historical vessels. I do have a suggestion though. I would like to see you cover the USS Texas BB-35, despite the fact that it still survives. I have followed several videos covering this legendary ship and researched some details myself, but I think I would enjoy your take on this ship and her history. It is the oldest surviving Dreadnaught (New York Class) and the only ship remaining ship that served in both world wars. Please do a video or even a series of videos of her.

I was listening to the part about Olympic coming to pick up Titanic passengers, and while I agree with Ismay that would be traumatic, and a horrible idea, I started to think, if I were a survivor, and was on the Carpathia, and the Olympic pulled up to pick up Titanic Survivors, I asked myself, would I start rattling off jokes about the situation? I mean, this is something seriously traumatic, escape within an inch of your life, how could anyone joke about something like that? Then I remembered how I deal with trauma, and thought the first thing I'd say while boarding is "Are ya sure this one's not gonna sink? I see the Promenade is a bit more open, is that to allow an easier escape?"
Thanks, BrightSide. You have contributed to the mental decay of my last brain cell. :P

Compared to their other videos this one was pretty good. There is that poster or concept art that shows the ship as named Gigantic. That would have been a better name because it would match the theme, but if Ismay was concerned about people's PTSD after the rescue he would probably have a think about the name of the new liner. It's like the Queen Mary's naming in that the plan changed but it was for the better in the end.
The "AI" art trend really needs to end before it gets good enough to alter history. It's already poisoning itself so it's definitely not sticking around too long.

On a more serious note, I've heard but haven't been able to verify that "Gigantic" was kind of a running gag at Harland and Wolff in the early 20th century, because White Star was always building bigger and bigger ships. 3 of the "Big Four" (the liner class that precoded the Olympic class) were the biggest ships in the world at the time of their maiden voyages, and the employees were well aware of White Star's naming convention of ending all their ship names with "-ic". So any unnamed White Star ship would be referred to as Gigantic as a sort of a jokey placeholder name until an official name was decided upon.

I’m late, but I saw a video with you and bright side in my suggested list, so I tapped without question lol. I googled it, you were right about Olympic’s position. She was on a return trip from New York, so only needed to change course a bit to attempt to assist Titanic. Also, they were surprisingly correct about HMS Audacious. She was a brand new King George V class battleship (not THAT King George V class battleship). She struck a mine off the coast of Ireland, and Olympic was one of the closest ships available to assist. Olympic attempted to take Audacious under tow, but Audacious quickly became untenable and unable to tow, plus I believe there was increasing risk of a magazine detonation (which did end up happening). I do somewhat overlook bright side accidentally using Titanic footage for Olympic. Being a naval history buff, it’s a very common occurrence to see pictures/clips of warships mislabeled. The most egregious I’ve recently seen was USS Nevada mislabeled as USS Arizona, and a French cruiser mislabeled as Prinz Eugen 🤦🏻‍♂️

Fun Fact: Bright Side’s on the naughty list for lying about the Titanic to a clickbait level

What a christmas treat! I still think you give Bright Side way too much credit. Interesting to learn about Ismay vetoing the Olympic's assistance, though, that's not something I've heard before. Merry Christmas!

One thing I am going to point out about the torpedo conspiracy for Britannic (if someone hasn’t already done so), is that there is video evidence of a mine having cause the sinking. I believe sometime in either 2015 or 2016, there was an expedition to the wreck of the Britannic where they were looking for evidence as to what sank the ship. I believe they actually found the cracked open shell of a German sea mine laying in the exact spot where Britannic was reported to have been struck still laying on the sea bed. So yes, it has been 100% confirmed that the Britannic struck a mine. I also believe that this evidence was placed in an episode of the TV series Drain the Oceans. It was in Season 2, Episode 13 titled Lost Giants.
Also, there are plenty of photos online of what Britannic would have looked like as a passenger ship. Part-Time Explorer and his development team made an entire game about the Britannic, Britannic Patroness of the Mediterranean, which has an alternate mode where one can view Britannic as a passenger ship. They could’ve easily used footage from that game as opposed to using crappy AI art.

Britannic did have a more powerful central turbine (an additional 2,000 HP) but that was to compensate for the weight of the raised watertight bulkheads, double hull, and other safety improvements rather than to improve her speed. A quick google shows that she's listed as having the same top speed as her sisters, but I can't find anything showing how extensive her sea trials were. They only lasted a day, but so did Titanic's if I'm not mistaken, and being the second and third ships of the class they weren't tested as extensively as Olympic, and given the rush to fit her out for her wartime duties I'm not sure speed tests were a priority.

She wasn’t 100% complete just enough to be able to sail lots of state rooms were not finished. Britannic was heavier with all the reinforcements and upgrades.

Don't worry Sam. I'll get the lifeboats ready. That picture of Titanic that you weren't sure about it is actually the Titanic. I have a Titanic book that does show that picture of it.

The Titanic in red funnels is from the failed 2012 movie Titanic 2, plus the weird Britannic image is actually a colored image, just like how some Titanic and Olympic pictures were black and white, but with software programming made colored images, it's not AI

Sam you should try a game called sinking ship survival it is a small ship from the 1920s and you can do a lot of roleplay you can give coal to the boilers turn on the electric lights close watertight doors turn on pumps lower lifeboats and some sinkings has a taskbar to save the ship and it has a engine room but it is kinda glitchy probably because all the features this game has

Britannic was listing from the mine. The list caused the propeller blades to stick up out of the water the lifeboats were stuck to the side of the ship because of the list and the boats slid down the side of the moving ship right into the propeller.

Hi Sam! :) The weird morphing in the beginning of the video from Bright Side is due to the "3D-effects" they added to that scene when she's being built, if you look at the scene things are moving like it was 3D even tho we all know it's a 2D-photo - but yes, I am also as surprised as you that they actually got the sinking correctly tho I thought it was between 3rd and 4th funnel the break-up was?
Also, the moon in one scene you got annoyed about was probably just a thing to make people understand it was happening at night and not during the day, cause that scene itself was fairly light blue which could make people think it was on a day or to think Brightside think it happened during daytime which we all know it didn't - not to defend Bright Side, just to share my point of view of that scene.
Great video tho Sam, much fun and happy holidays to you and a lovely end of the year!
    Thanks and Cheers!
