Ah yes, good old Alex Grind haha. Been a Despised Icon fan since 2007 and this guy has consistently made my brain explode hearing him play.
He looks like the type of guy you ask if he can help move your couch.
Yes Bobby LOL.
Or a comment I read somewhere: this man looks like he can throw a mean bbq
@@AndrewRooneyDrums move it, more like he could just boot it up the stairs and into the living room lol
@@LUXXY1984 with those weak ass kicks? you wouldn't even hear those kicks in a rehearsal room. they barely have a range of motion. To be clearm I'm not dissing the guy, obviously the faster you go, the less force you can apply. I'm just saying that in this vid everything is displayed but strong kicks
he's actually one of the nicest dudes around !
The pedals are Czarcie Kopyto pedals, but Alex puts blocks under the heels as he likes to sit INCREDIBLY high and it helps him get a pivot point for his double strokes (almost like using the rim of the drum for a gravity/freehand blast)
Thanks for the great info Mike! Great stuff
THANK YOU Mike Caputo for explaining this, I have been trying to figure out that pedal set up since I saw this video come out!
I have got the same pedals (standard) and I like to have my snare and the toms as low as possible. I build my own hardware, but raising the pedals would have been cheaper, I guess...
He’s a short dude as well, this probably just helps make everything more comfortable
So you finally found the "drilling machine"
My old band opened for Despised Icon about 13 years ago in quite a small venue, getting to watch this dude go to work in such close quarters is pretty spectacular, the guy is an absolute machine behind the kit and also a genuinely very nice dude
Oh wow! That's awesome
He’s humble AF!
I remember those days. I’m from Kingston Nova Scotia. I miss the old days with the small shows at legions and community centres. And the pavilion in Halifax was always a good time.
These guys walk around their venues while the opening band is playing and interact with fans. Seriously genuine dudes.
@@canfts real talk, I saw them again at a MUCH bigger show on one of those major package tours with like 10 bands about a year later, Alex Erian (vocalist) was walking in the crowd after their set and he came up to me like "hey dude what's up, how's the band? You guys were dope when we played together last year bro!"
I was absolutely bowled over by the fact that he recognised me, remembered that gig and gave enough of a shit to actually come and say hi. Bearing in mind when we played with them the venue was a tiny 300 capacity basement club whereas this big package tour was a sold out date at a major venue, about 3000 capacity, literally 10x bigger and yet he still made time to come and talk to me because he recognised me from 1 show we played together in a small club about 18 months prior 🤯
Holy shit. That push-pull blast technique. The double strokes on the double bass allows him to play those very fast bursts of three 32nd notes. And holy shit, the 5 stroke rolls at the start mirrored in speed by his feet.... Wild.
looks like he's hitting triggers with the heels..
@@loumason6120 Nope he's playing double strokes.
“Hell” by Clowncore.
One handed drumming while playing keyboard recorded in a portaloo.
Nuff said.
Always clown core
Discovering Clowncore is one of the few good things to happen to me in 2020.
@@liliIiliIilil if do you haven’t already gone down the Rabbit hole, Louis Cole is the name of the Drummer he does solo stuff which is amazing
ua-cam.com/video/glgPZmSwC4M/v-deo.html
And is in a band called knower. The sax player is also part of these projects but his name escapes me at the moment.
Google your own death - masterpiece!
This is honestly one of his milder DPT's in my opinion. The dude is a monster 👹
Funny thing is, he started out as the bands guitarist originally.
Andrew, this guys personal YT channel is alexgrind, and he has a lot of live footage from his bands shows on there. I am so glad you finally have seen this guy. One of my personal favorite hyper aggressive drummers out there. Been digging this band for almost 20 years!
The pedals are Czarcie Kopyto. Polish company who have become a new forerunner in metal drumming pedals. He's got custom heel plate risers to facilitate heel-toe with his seating position.
Awesome. Thanks Jack!
I’ve seen Despised Icon 3 times and each time he was soooo solid and hit so hard. Dude uses the thickest drum sticks I’ve ever seen.
Their last reunion tour came to my city and I got my gf to go with me and she fucking loved them. It's been so nice to have them come back
Saw him live in my hometown a couple times since I'm from Québec, incredible drummer! Despised Icon are one of the main bands that popularised Deathcore, legends.
had to give ya comment a big thumbs up mate...D,I are definitely legends of the Deathcore scene!
Alex has been around forever ! He paved the way for all the guys like Alex Rudinger !
People dont remember his old videos in his garage/basement recording through a crappy mic covering all their old stuff off the healing process.
In this play through what we're witnessing is evolution. It started with the godfather of tech Neil Peart and has evolved to Alex Grinds the current humble raining champ.
Bar none Alex has proven himself time and time again. What's amazing is through his own humility he doesn't even recognize himself as such; he's to humble for that. He does what he does, because he loves it, nothing more.
Who better to hold the crown 👑
Also I know it's hard for certain people to understand, but he does what he does all natural.
HE'S NEVER USED TRIGGERS.
In 2010 I had a conversation with him about his pedals. He said he figured out a way to go faster with less strain. There for the reason as to why he sits higher and why he took the time to modify/design his own pedals. Through his own personal growth he wanted to figure this out. In a word; passion.
Alex is a monster player. Love his push/pull technique when he blasts.
Despised Icon are one of the OG's of deathcore. You should watch his play through of "MVP"
I seen this guy play back in 08. Met him and helped him carry his rig off stage after their set. Dude is like 5 foot of pure muscle. Hes one of my most fave extreme drummers. Crazy fast.
Those pedals are Czarcie Kopyto. They make custom pedals.
With added aftermarket heel risers
The ills of modern man the ills of modern man PLZ WATCH HIM PLAY THE ILLS OF MODERN MAN!!!!!
Ahhhhh... Im glad to see this on the list.. Dispised Icon is sooo wonderful. Check... MVP,.. Ill Of Modern Man ..
Time for Flo Mounier !!! :)
Was just thinking this myself!
Custom pedal. Designed so he sits up higher and gets better heel toe action that way. He’s the only person I’ve ever seen with these. The pads are to help prevent misfires where the trigger sensor thinks the vibrating drum head is a hit and messes up the triggering. The heel toe technique and most all double stroke kick stuff is only doable with triggers. It’s not the real acoustic drum sound. But that’s how people get that kind of speed right now.
His snare hands both utilize push pull as well as gravity blasts or freehand techniques almost mixed together. He’s amazing at putting these techniques together. Great vid!
Dude's push-pull is otherworldly for a metal drummer.
I've seen them live at a small venue where you could stand to the right of the stage close to the drummer. Its insanely incredible in person and one of the craziest things ive ever seen musically
Yep, those pedals are modified to have a platform for his feet to be raised so he can play better and confortable. It´s something you have to try to find that "sweet point" when you are learning your doubles and more to find your perfect settings for heel-toe. Mine for example, the footplates are really close to the ground. I believe Alex has some short legs so its the best option for him. Still the guy plays weird but his push pull hand technique is wonderful
Il est francais canadien lol. his name is phonically “Peltyay”. Absolute beast. Great pick
Thanks Jack!
Drumtec is a brand of e-drums and related gear. From the looks of it he's running a full accousic to electric conversion on the kicks. Mesh heads with patches that are triggered.
i see you have found The Grind himself. he's one of a kind
Yup! Amazing stuff
Thomas Lang in a drumeo video said leaning in helps with control because it helps get closer to kit for better reach
Interesting. Thanks for the info Daniel!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ua-cam.com/video/4GnBnnvHYC8/v-deo.html just in case you wanted to check it out! Keep making cool videos 👍🏻👍🏻
His push pull technique is on point. I think he raises his pedals to play doubles easier. Check out his playthrough of Light speed! The different kinds of blasts he does are insane.
Hahaa, this guy is the craziest ever! :D I'm not getting anything out of the music but the drumming is so awkwardly entertaining and unbelievably amazing!
This guy is fucking legend!!!!!
Yes Alex 🙌
Its crazy because i just watched this Playthrough of Alex.. And your reaction was right underneath, so i had to see the Stink Face Alex Grind is a Phenomenal drummer. Despised Icon are Great Canadian Metalcore/Hardcore band..
Risers on the pedals make it a shorter stroke to the head... and the pads on the bass heads are click pads to add punch/click to the bass drum
This vid may well contain your best reaction faces ever. I clearly recall my first viewing of this a cpl years ago. Category of his own.
Just wanted to add that this was _probably_ the most entertaining roughly-five-minute-video I've seen _this month_ (it's the 2nd of *May* turning to the 3rd of *May, 2021* 😉)!
I really like whatever light set-up Alex has goin on. It looks like he has some sort of glow happening to his drum heads. Might just be reflections from his normal lights? I dunno but it looks super dope
Drumming = learn to play to the best of your ability with both hands/feet. Now learn to play the exact sequences with a single hand/foot. Now combine two independent sequences of the same difficulty you once played with both hands/feet into one. Devote every second to practice.
How’s a man drum like that but still be...cuddly
Lol check out nick barker
One word: poutine
Incredible
That push-pull technique is absolutely phenomenal.
It’s like the gravity blast, the technique is the foot becomes the fulcrum like fiddling the rim one hand bit with the feer
Pelletier is french name. He is from quebec canada.
I LOVE DESPISED ICON, id still really enjoy them if Mr.Pelletier didn't do drums for them, vocals and instrumentals are dope, but man the drummer is like a nice carpet in a nice room, really helps tie the room together. Mr.Grind is that carpet. And all The Dudes abide.
Still remember when Alex came to Derek Roddy's message board roughly two decades ago and posted that he could play even the silliest parts of Morbid Angel's Gateways. No one believed this newbie kid until he posted videos from Deuterium's demo sessions and gigs. Absolutely blown away ever since :D Like this ua-cam.com/video/o9enTFWPLmI/v-deo.html
Love that he's been using Corpsmasters, the wrong way - and still absolutely smash those insane speeds and sharp fills.
Awesome!
I think that strange pedals settings is for do better double strokes
Don't quote me on any of this, but he looks to be using a heel-up technique, and raising the pedals like that means less travel? Economy of movement and all that? Idk, I just listen and bang my head.
they've been modified by the owner for a higher elevation.
@@wolverine669 Yes. To play heel toe technique i think.
@@markytear Alex Grind is actually a pretty short dude. I'm 6'4" and when I had met him I would guess hes 5'6"/5'7". If you look at previous videos you can tell hes sitting very high in comparisson to using regular size bass drums (22"). Hes got those to help with his sitting angle since he has to sit higher than the bassdrum to sit above the drums the way he does.
From what I have heard, it is so he can still drop his heels below the bass drum pedal for his technique while sitting so high
I don't know for sure, but after looking at the slide at the front of the footboard, I think those pedals were made specifically to platform up. As far as why, if I had to make a guess, it makes the angle required to get a full kick sound much less steep, making it easy to kick and let his triggers pick them up, as triggers will only really require a slight vibration to trigger the programmed sound.
Trigger on the left kick at 11 o'clock and on the right kick at 1 o'clock of the kicks, making their appearance at 0:57
Yeah the leaning in definitely helps keep those doubles cleaner on the kick. Those pedals are crazy they’re like stacked up on a couple Oreos huh.
I primarily (try to) play metal drumming, it’s so exhausting to play but if you get good at it it makes a lot of other drumming so much easier!
This song is "cool" and I love Alex Grind. I wouldn't say its Alex's best song. Lesson in blasting and how to make a blast ride through a song.
Alex "Pell-Tee-yay" Pelletier. Quebecois pour d'erable! Damn Quebecers lol
His technique definitely got better! One of the most creative drummers in metal
Alex Rudinger and Alex Grind top 3 favorite drummers.
Awesome players
The first recording of retina drum cam on his youtube channel his sick
Machine 🔥🔥🔥🔥
nice grooves bro
I’d love to see Arnaud Verrier of Uneven structure and his playthrough of outlaw
Such a good player and chill dude!! Would love to see him here
Thanks for Alex :)
There are these tight magnetic pedals now that you can maybe get online. No more chain pedal! Smoothness all the way
1:22 lmfao. If man wasnt metal he is now!!
HAHA Joshua!
Was his Snare angled away from him?
Enjoying your vids Andrew. 🤘
You should do: Porcupine tree Anesthetize Live in Tilburg, Gavin is beast on that one. I mean that's the best concert of porcupine tree IMO and some of the best play of him with the band.
Gavin is a beast. All around amazing player and writer. That song is beautiful as well.
YES

when are you going to react to Jamie St Merat?
Yes, dead oceans, no others
@@chasp_0784 or anything from Everything Is Fire. But preferably Drown within, Caecus or Everything Is Fire!
Didn't we do St. Murat a few weeks ago?
@@TupDigital he did two podcast videos but not a drum video reaction
@@Kain_R_Heinlein is there a place to rewatch or relisten?
I don’t care if it’s triggered, real or not, it’s fucking nice !!!!
That’s like saying “I don’t care if that runner is on steroids, it’s fucking nice!”
Hi Andrew, Pelletier is a French name. If Alex says it as it would be in French it would sound like Pell-tiay.
Whatever way he says his name, he's a freaking machine!
It look like alex is using high heel support since, imo, he’s more comfortable playing higher on his seat with his legs more under him (closer to the bass drum) then usual drummers. so having a higher heel support with a higher seat, with the legs more “under the seat” facilitate his job without adding injuries due to compressed/obtuse foot-leg angle… i dont know… im just speculating 🤔
My bad I comment this vid on other vid. You ahead of me bro.
Not my style of music or playing drums, but...this guy is nuts fast
Andrew is all of us at the beginning, when we first saw this video.
HAHA!
Yes you guess right.Has triggers on the pedals.Insane drumming seems sure to drilling like someone said. With the help of electronic stuff can someone who really plays fast on the acoustic kit achieve speeds from hell easy like to go for coffee...in some way.
Kind of surprising that you don't see push pull more often in blasting, but Alex takes good advantage of it here.
Yooo Andrew love your videos! You really need to check out Ben Koller he drums in a band calked converge. Think jazz mixed with metal and hardcore punk. Koller was actually a jazz drummer before he joined the band. I would honestly put him up there with the big names. Give them a listen I’m sure he has a few play throughs on UA-cam
You should take a look at Chambers of Tain by Tain Watts on Black Codes from the Underground by Wynton Marsalis. It's a full figured solo.
They're custom made "heel blocks" to facilitate easier dbls
I love metal and I've never heard of this guy. I now hate myself. Wow I couldn't love his style more!
Hybrid kick drums. Multi-ply electric kick heads with Roland triggers (top left corner/top right corner) it seems. I do the same with mine.
nice one, dude.! alex rudinger has a new video out.!! it's a drum cover of nasum's 'shadows'.!! nasum was an insane and ferocious swedish grindcore band. they hang it up after their vocalist died in the tsunami in the indian ocean in 2004.
absolutely insane drumming, as always from rudi. please, react to it...even if it's not a patreon request.:)
"Denude the masked face, free yourself from the illusion"
If I'm not mistaken, some people will lean forward like that to get more power and speed. Either way he is insane!
Yesssssssss ! My kind of drummer ! Another 1 I will never be able to cover any of his songs🤪🤪🤪
You could do anything you put your mind to. Just have to learn the right techniques to play faster more comfortably
@@HKRocks true , not enough time with all i have going on with kids and family plus I'm old , but I agree with you and will be teaching my kids the same principle... Im not to bad on the drums myself considering.. God bless
Looks like trick drums bigfoot pedals w some risers
Kai Hahto, one of the best drummers out there..
Eloy Casagrande ‘Battery’ Metallica cover, it’s insane!
This dude the Usain Bolt of drumming or something?
It looks like he's got acoustic kick drums, converted to E drums? Unless I'm 100% wrong lol. Either way, he's a madman.
When you going to check out David diepold? Extremely sic drummer. He does everything from extreme like this all the way to Dave Weckel cover
Anthony Barone is a beast too
You have to do "Light Speed"
Jesse Beahler - An eye for an eye.
Check him out bro - from a fellow Kiwi
I feel his major lack of technique is actually an alien form of a a master technique(his posture, how he holds his sticks etc)
The ills of modern man, OMFG
👀
Lord Marco will blow your mind
Alex is quite short the pedals have raise pads to play more comfortably. He likes to experiment from what I can tell too
They’re heel blocks my friend
I can't believe no one has ask for any tesseract
I have. But can't afford a patrion pick hehe. I asked for him to check out one of drum cams with the click track included to hear his take on playing to a click.
Did a few times already :(
Imagine drumming at that speed using Vic Firth MS4 sticks... oh wait.. alex can.
HAHA!
the blocks are so he can do double strokes with his feet easier apparently.
What the *censored did I just witnessed?! His feet?! It looks slow but how?! Huh?!
Flat board pedals are what he's using
Czarkie Kopyto pedals? I have no idea.
triggers on bass drum
