Repot & Plant Chat! Repotting Philodendron bipinnatifidum 'Lickety Split'
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лис 2024
- In this video I'm repotting my philodendron bipinnatifidum 'lickety split' that I got last year in a Logee's plant haul. while potting this philodendron I talk some about it's name change from Philodendon to Thaumatophyllum, some about where and why terrariums came to be but mostly focused on just chatting about the plant. A frequently asked question I get is how to propagate philodendron, specifically, how to propagate philodendron from leaf cuttings. I've already done videos about to divide philodendron bipinnatifidum and how to grow philodendron bipinnatifidum, I will link those below and at the end of the video. To avoid any confusion for those who may not know, this plant is the same as Philodendron selloum, split leaf philodendron, and thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum.

Wish I would remember to not overfill soil when repotting! Every time I water my racks of houseplants that live outside (Palm Springs, Ca.), soil spills out all over! You would think I would learn. But, nope. Thanks for the reminder though! Also, am obsessed with the variegated birds nest fern you sent PammysPlantyThings! You made her day for sure!
It's easy to forget, especially when we are in, "repot" mode and getting robotic about it. Oh that fern! It got lost in the mail and took around 2 weeks to get to her. Was so relieved it wasn't just a box of mushy dead plant.
My mother has an over 30 y/o Thaumatophyllum that definitely is getting a repot next spring!
I love how sturdy and long lived they are! I bet you could squeeze one into your garden if you already haven't.
I love this plant mines need to be repotted as well I'm going wait until spring. She been growing none stop.
They are great aren't they? When mine get to be a larger size, I tend to go a long time in between repots. I should probably repot my larger one also.
I had one of these that took up an entire guest bedroom in my old house, the thing had a leaf on every wall, the ceiling and floor.
I learned that you can cut them back pretty much as hard as you want. XD
They really are nearly bullet proof plants!
knowledge that has many benefits for lovers of ornamental plants👍🙏
Thank you!
Resetting and cleaning out my table in living room i enjoy your videos as i work in my inside jungle
Fun! Always nice to do a good clean out!
Absolutely perfect! Taking a break, I’m working on a birthday cake, making dinner for the tribe, a houseful of family and there you are!💚🙃 My internet wheel keeps spinning, grr, too many peps on the net.💚oh here we go!💚🙃 ah nope. That’s the only thing I don’t like about living in the country, internet stinks💚🙃 I know a lot of people don’t like systemics , I don’t have to worry about fish or kitties or dogs that eat plants, so I like to use it ,especially on plants that are really susceptible to buggy critters. I know it would probably not be a good thing for you though.💚🙃 Your so smart, I really like your facts about plants💚🙃 I like the Philly in the white pot, it seems to stand out more, show off the plant better💚🙃 HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃 🍗 🍗 🥗 🥔 🥖 🥧and maybe a 🍸or two🍸 💚🙃 HEY, DO YOU HAVE A P.O BOX ? If you do could you please share that address? 💚🙃
Yum! Cake! I'm about to get busy making casseroles, but wish I was making cake. I agree, i initially didn't care what pot the Philly went in, but the white one is better. I don't mind systemics, sometimes they're necessary, just need to be used carefully and properly. No p.o box, I've thought about opening one, but with covid going on, doesn't make sense right now. Maybe when things are safer.
I have been thinking about the substrate that plants come with, how the plants come looking amazing, and then they come home and if I keep them in that substrate I get root rot, so I have to repot quite soon after getting them. Funny how that works
Often times what works well for the growers environment, budget and yields the fastest growth isn't always what's best for normal household growing.
Hi, Jeff! Great video! I'm glad you allowed your viewers to learn how to investigate and problem solve via asking the question "why". Why is my plant remaining soggy? Is it because of overwatering? Is it the soil? Is it damaged roots? Is it pest? Or is it the container? Learning about your plants enables you to maintain your plant collection more effectively! Have an awesome Thanksgiving celebration! Take care!🙏🏾❤🙏🏾
Thank you! Exactly, process of elimination is a vital tool for keeping plants. I think that is the hardest thing to explain to people who are new to growing plants and get easily discouraged. I get asked often about things like yellow or brown leaves which can be caused from a huge variety of issues and there is rarely a cut and dry answer. Happy Thanksgiving!
💚 Vines are so pretty to watch them grow.
Absolutely!
I have the normal variety of this one. I left it outside last winter and it had crown rot. But in spring it sprouted 4(!) pups! So it's now even bigger and wider 🤣 I also have one in a semi hydro setup. They just grow and grow. I just absolutely love the topical leaves!!
Great video Jeff and "HAPPY THANKSGIVING"🦃
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving!! So thankful to know your channel! I love it and think you are amazing 🌸
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃. I love this plant. I use to have one 🤔. I think I need a big floor plant like this again. Love the second pot better. I thought I was the only person who watered the soil off the rim. 🤣. 💕
Such wonderful floor plants! Oh I wash the entire plant and pot off during the first watering. So much easier than doing it with a sponge or rag.
Happy Thanksgiving Jeff, thanks for a great video, I just love these plants. 🇬🇧🐾🌈💕🐶😷😁
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
That marble look is adorable!! I always hate when you don't notice what you did wrong on a repot until you have to start completely over tho, thats so annoying
Hi Jeff have a happy Thanksgiving hope it's a wonderful day for you stay safe keep on growing happy planting see you next time thank you for all you do and how you do it.
Thanks, kit! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well! Hope you have a wonderful time!
Happy thanksgiving! Beautiful plant.
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, Jeff, to you and your family!
Thank you, Eileen! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
I have an old version of this type that I debated tossing out..... not enough room in the sun room thinning out ..so I put it outside over the end of summer...thinking it would freeze or make it....so far we have had a few barely freezing nights...it's surrounded by native sword ferns under my bananna trees...and suprisingly still looks great...go figure...they are way tougher than I thought.
Hey Lorell! Happy holiday! They really are tough. My big one has frozen solid multiple times and recovered without hesitation. There's even a variety called, 'hope' which is supposed to be root hardy into zone 7b.
I thought the best time to repot was spring?
I forgot I cut the part of the video out where I talked about that. Oops! Yes. Spring and summer are ideal for repotting. Once I have the plastic up in my grow space, it stays very warm and the plants get long days via artifical lighting. Because of this they stay in active growth, which makes it ok to repot them.
I'm too scared to repot 😆 I have to bring 2 tropicals inside and a Begonia
They can go a long time without being repotted. The only reason ill be repotting mine next year is because it's still so small that it should be ready to be moved a size. Once they reach a certain size they don't need it as often.
@@TropicalPlantParty great info!! Thx
Hi Jeff! That is such a pretty plant. Do they get as big as a Monstera Deliciosa? I'd love to have one, but have limited space. I saw that mentioned the "hope" below. Is it a smaller plant overall? I always presoak my soil so I don't have to worry about it settling, but then don't water right away. Is it better to water it right away? I used to be guilty of putting too much soil in the pots, too, but have been doing better. It definitely isn't as messy. LOL! Also, I've started putting a piece of window screen, the kind that doesn't rust, over the holes in my pots, both indoor and outdoor, to help keep the soil in and it's been working really well. I have several of the pots you ended up using and really like them. I liked the other one, too. Thank you so much for sharing, only wished it was much longer. LOL!
Hey Sandy! To the best of my knowledge, this should get as big as regular bipinnatifidums, but definitely not as big as monstera deliciosa, still can get quite large over many years. I just like to give a watering right away to make sure there aren't any air pockets in the soil. Thank you! Hope you are doing well!
Happy Thanksgiving Jeff!
Thanks, Carl! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Hi Jeff. My plant tends to put out a,new leaf then an older one will turn yellow. I cant get it to fill out. Any ideas?
Hello! Usually when they can't support multiple leaves that is an indication that the plant needs more of either light, pot size, nutrition or any combo of those things. Generally when I have a plant behing like this, I repot them and give them some nice fresh soil.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
It's such a cool plant :)
A classic!
Happy Turkey Day 🦃Jeff!
Haha! Thank you! Happy tofurkey day for me,and no, it does not taste good 😅🤣😂 happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

Happy Thanksgiving!
So helpful! ☺️
Happy Thanksgiving! :)
Happy belated Thanksgiving!
Can you show us all your philodendrons? I really want to get some.
Happy Thanksgiving
Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey I was wondering is this the same as the philodendron hope? It looks just like mine but mines just a but bigger. I don’t know if that makes a difference. Either way I super love this plant. One of my first plants and I wanted it forever! Finally got it. It’s tooooo beautiful to not have in your house! 😁. I ❤️ those huge leaves so unique so underrated in my opinion! Ok I’ll stop rattling on I love them!
I agree! Totally underrated! The hope is another variety of the same plant, it is a philodendron bipinnatifidum, but it stays smaller and is more cold hardy.
❤️ Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🍁
Happy Thanksgiving!

Eew, the ad that came up at the end of the video was a double whammy. Three minutes long and shot in portrait mode. Why? Who is going to watch a 3 minute ad in portrait?
Oh, so where do you order your hibiscus from? I have an empty planter, I'm thinking a hibiscus in it but the ones at the garden centers here are all so _basic_ . I'm looking at cajuns from Big Bad Flower but I figure I'll ask where you buy from because I'll know what I'm getting.
I chuckle at some of these ads, the amount of money they pay to advertise during the holidays, would think they'd strive for more captivating content. I really like hidden valley hibiscus, they have a great variety. The selection does shift a lot, but if you subscribe to their newsletter they send out restock notifications. Also they don't flood your inbox with junk. They give pretty descriptions of the plants. Usually saying what their growth form will be, flower abundance, flower size and usually the parentage of the varieties. Been a while since I ordered from them, but I do recall their shipping being pretty outrageous.
I wish they would stop changing the names of these plants. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I agree..Happy Thanksgiving everyone
Oh I killed mine 😔
