Thanks for all the awesome tips! I learned soo many great ideas! I just wanted to share a tip with you since I'm a bottom feeder plant parent too. I've found bottom feeder pots on Amazon that have a clear bottom with cotton strings that you put through the top planter that snaps on to the bottom bowl and the strings hang into the water. (Set of 5 different sizes/or all the same sizes up to 8 in.)They have a little lip on one side where you pour the water into the bottom bowl. Their light weight plastic. I like that I can see the roots growing into the water through the clear bottom bowl. Then I know ahead of time that it's time to repot into a bigger pot. I've gone on vacation for 2 weeks and filled the bottom bowl with water and the plants did just fine drinking through the string hanging in the water. Also I put up some wrought iron plant hanger brackets that can carry weight up to 20 lbs ea. On each side of a big east facing window. Then I found a long 6 foot branch while camping and set in the hooks of the brackets like a curtain rod. I hung 5 macrame plant holders with S hooks along the branch and set those light weight bottom feeder pots in each of them to hold my plants. So the entire window has plants hanging across it and vines crawling up across the branch rod. I like those bottom feeder pots because their lightweight (compared to ceramic or terracotta pots) and the weight is mostly from the water and soil. I can easily reach each pot and pour water into each lip of the pots that are hanging in the macrame plant/pot holders. I think this idea would look nice above your wooden bench where your plants are sitting at the big window. There are also double hook wrought iron brackets that I found at a dollar tree store. They wouldn't carry as much weight as the heavy duty ones I used on the window project though. I'm going to use them on a smaller window with fewer macrame pot holders. I think the brackets are really for hanging pots outside on a patio wall of the home. their sort of like the wooden bracket you showed. But I get so many compliments and the 5 macrame with plants hanging, covers the window so no can really see in since there's no curtain. The plants Are the curtain 😄 🌿🪴🌱 I just thought I'd share & I hope I explained clearly. I can send pic if you'd like. But I think this would look really nice hanging at that window. It also gave me more space since I got those 5 plants hanging up instead of on the table where they were to begin with. Thanks for all the great information. Happy planting and Happy New year🎉

❤❤ checking it out. I just got into indoor plants the past 3yrs and have been an outdoor gardener and was surprisingly successful . I use coffee and coffee grinds to give my indoor plant a treat weekly. Outdoors we compost all year and I use local native plants to create an ecosystem for the birds and I will tell you this: since it all works together and I have plants and bushes that were dying and my birds brought them back. I love your tips but I already tried 75% of them. I use coffee for dirt and I use it to water weekly and it has kept my plants going and happy❤
My house burned to the ground in 2020 and I live in a trailer now so I don't HAVE anywhere to keep plants!!! Really appreciate the snarky reply though!
I store all my avocado seeds in a large Mason jar filled with water. Whe outer skin of avocado has softened up I peel it off and put them back into Mason jar. I watch for seeds to sprout then plant them in soil leaving top half of seed exposed and other 1/2 of seed with root planted in soil. This method has worked best for me.
I'm late to the party, but my favorite hack is putting coffee filters in the bottom of plants I'm potting. It keeps the soil from spilling into the catch basin & if you're a bottom waterer, it will help wick up water. They don't hold up forever, but they do at least until the soil is slightly compacted & doesn't spill from the drainage holes. I love your channel!
One more important thing, friends: please be sure to always use gardening gloves & wash ur hands immediately after working with plants. I got a terrible staph infection last year in my hand that landed me in the hospital for a week & having to have emergency surgery to remove tendons from my hand that had become diseased. The same thing happened to another gardener friend of mine, who was pricked by a thorn from a plant which ended up getting infected.

The lemon water hack killed some of my plants unfortunately 😂 do not use this hack on the thin leafed plants please, my nice calathea died within minutes and I could not revive it, and thus it was pronounced dead the next day 💔
Dont use them for propping up the plants though , or at least use plastic ones as mold issues usually set in quickly ! There super great tools in the garden though for sure 😁!
No I don't personally think it's moisture, as I've experienced this in basically every scenario, and mold grows regardless of moisture conditions , as long as there's bio matter , mold is a possibility at some stage . It can be down to the choice of soil I think..🤔 as I grow alot of Begonia see , I have over 100 different types and a few use leaf molds or things like that , so it's possible that can cause issues with untreated wood maybe , seems likely 🤷♂️ but I think it's probably more likely down to the fact that on large , most chopsticks are made from soft woods & most chopsticks people would use , would likely be from a takeaway box or something like that (assuming obviously) and there not intended to be used more than once , so there usually not coated or treated in anyway other than being made & sanded down , which usually means even after the first water , the wood starts wicking it up.. but plastic ones... , plastic ones are game changers 🔥

I put eyelets on the wall and ran fishing line in a web near the ceiling, now i am running my pothos on the lines, tied with small strings. It looks amazing!

I buy colorful scarves from thrift stores and tie them around my pots, gives them a little bling I enjoy every time I look at them. I keep the scarves in place with stick on hooks.
Splinting a broken stem works if it's not broken all the way through. It did for my Orchid, only it was the root not the stem that broke. The velamen had cracked, so, I took two toothpicks and wrapped it with some soft bias tape from my sewing kit and voila, it healed!
My favorite tips from this video are, using a fork to lift seedlings and small plants out for transplanting, tongs for cactus, and to water well the day before cutting for propagating. Thanks!

I’ve got a great hack-if u accidentally left ur plant too long & the soil is bone dry, it’s difficult for the soil to absorb water, esp Peet based soil. So add a drop of castille soap (it’s made from vegetable oils) to ur watering can. This helps the soil absorb the water. I use this hack often so I can attest that it does not harm ur plants. Just don’t use dish soap or other super harsh soaps that have a lot of detergents (although I’ve done this every once in a while when in a pinch)
One of my favorite things to set my plants on when I bring them in for the winter is a diatomaceous mat. They often sell them as dish drying mats and such, but they work wonders for keeping my wood surfaces from suffering water damage when I water my plants. I’ve started keeping one underneath every single plant I have in my home so that if I accidentally splash a bit of water or the pot leaks a tad, the pad absorbs it and keeps my floors and counters dry. For the repotting leaf protection, I always use plastic wrap just around the upper portion of the plant. This way I can see leaves and stems clearly, I can work around them easily, I don’t have to tape anything, and it’s also safe to leave in place to support the plant until it acclimates to its new pot.
Great ideas. An alternative remedy I came up with for the terracotta-saucer-condensation problem was to get some of the small self adhesive felt pads that you can buy for furniture feet. Cut the circles into quarters and put four equally spaced under the edge of the saucer. Not only did it remove condensation issues but they're also easier to move around without roughly rubbing on the surface. They're not visible underneath, doesn't alter the aesthetic. Very cheap as a single circle was enough for each saucer and you got 12 in a pack for £1.
@@kikki2012 hi they don't. I cut the circles into multiple pieces so that they go further. Quarter circles. So you get 4 out of one piece. They go further that way and I had a lot of terracotta saucers!
I save all different size plastic lids to put in the bottoms of the decorative pots for air circulation and leftover potential water and also to raise them higher to fit the pot if need be.
Another hack to dress up plain pots i just saw is to take a sweater/jumper (for the English 😊) you no longer want and fit your pot inside one of the sleeves just up to the edge of the top of the pot, and cut the sweater where the bottom of the pot is. Its a sweater for your pots. ❤
Ah yes, the skewer I have been using it , before knowing someone recommends it! It’s amazing. The sound and feel and amount of soil sticking to it, tells you the moisture!
I bought beneficial mites for thrips and spider mites, and a tube of soil mites that eat fungus gnat eggs/larvae, and it’s only been maybe a week but I already haven’t seen any gnats for a couple of days! I’d been battling them all summer (more than the couple that were around before) , and it was so annoying, so I’m VERY happy to see results already with the mites :)
This is the first time watching your video. Very informative. I learned a few new things. Maybe your other videos aren’t as long but I’d like to see shorter ones. I’ll have to rewatch and take some notes. One thing I do is fill empty gallon milk jugs with water and let them sit without lids for at least 24 hours. Supposedly that lets the chlorine and other bad things escape. Sometimes I put small traces of fertilizer in water or a small amount Epsom salt in. Mostly just plain water since I heard plants need a resting or dormant time over winter months. I was glad to see there are others who are always propagating more plants. My counter is full of jars with starts in them. My husband doesn’t like it and tells me to just throw them away. Anyway, I really enjoyed your podcast and will look forward to more. I also want to go back and catch the names of the others you mentioned. Sorry this is so long.
I'm 62. Love Plants as far back as I can remember. I'm amazed by all the plants you have. Never had August Nats. I bet your wife just loves all those plants. I just love plants❤ They clean your air and give Oxygen. I was taught to make my own fertilizer. So many. I have a worm garden too. Worm castings, egg shell water, leaf tea, Confrey leaf ... and more. I have 12 aloe Vera plants. Some are huge. Thank you. I Subscribed.

I’m trying out sliced wine corks to top mulch my orchids. Rose Hardy from hardy plants used cork granules, in her potting mix. It will be interesting to try this out in 2024.
I use the clear plastic cups you get from take out to use as a cover for my small pants to boost humidity, instead of a glass mason jar thanks for the video!😄
Love these hacks! Here's a random one for you - the broken pots - I use then as a pile of wildlife havens in the garden. just a tiny area with a little pile of them - bugs, frogs and toads have moved in :)

You both have a fun sense of humor without making it all about you. I have a question if I may. I have gathered tree bark to make my own chunky soil for my Monsteras and Snake and ZZ plants. Is there a " No no" I don't know about and if so how would you proceed making this soil?
Thanks! The thing that springs to mind is bugs and bacteria lurking in the wood. You'd need to break it down into small chunks to use in a soil mix. Very thrifty though i like it
Can confirm snake plants and Christmas cactus live together well. A piece of the cactus was broken off so I popped it in with the snake plant like “that plant is doing well, you should stay alive in there” and they’re both thriving. It looks lovely having the tall snakes surrounded by droopy cactus stems and flowers 🌺 total accident but it’s now one of my favourite pots

Thank you for your informative videos. I had pesky little knats and heard to use cinnamon. I had cinnamon sticks and laid them on top of soil and I haven't had any pest for months now. Oh, I just received two orchid plants and listened to your videos for their care along with MissOrchidGirl. My plants are loving their better informed care I am giving them. And YES I am using your watering meter and I don't over water now. Hugs!
It is possible to put avocado seeds directly into moist soil and they'll sprout. Bury them about halfway or a bit more. That way you're not making holes into the seed and the roots are acclimated to soil from the get go.

I purchased a countertop water distiller for my drinking water to eliminate plastic bottles and I've saved so much $. I now use the distilled water for my cats and plants too.
Omg thank u for this idea!! I've been considering a countertop reverse osmosis setup but didn't like that it wastes so much water processing the pure RO water. The distiller is so much better for my needs! Didn't even know that was an affordable option til I Googled after reading your comment!

I just took about 20 used candles that have about 1/2 inch of wax left, melted them down, and poured them together to make a new layered candle. I’ve been sitting here looking at all the pretty colored glass, not wanting to throw them out and trying to figure out what to do with them. This video came at the perfect time! Lol
For other cuttings I have a hack where I put several cuttings straight into potting media in a pot, then place 3 chopsticks around the edges I then pop a thin freezer bag over the cuttings and chop sticks, then secure the see through plastic bag with an elastic band around the top of the pot. The chop sticks keep the bag from collapsing on the cuttings. It is a mini hot house, with all the humidity needed. Light gets through, air is let in through the holes in the plastic pot, it works like a treat.
You are a plant genius! I knew about pet shop supplies for plants, but nothing about improving water with aquarim water treatment. I just order one and it is soo cheap vs distilled water. Thank you so much!
I love all of these great tips!! I especially love using chopsticks for testing soil moisture or breaking up the soil, plastic containers for my propagations, Pothos cuttings and cinnamon for my cuttings, lemon juice/water for cleaning my Orchid leaves, showering my large plants to also mimic a "rainforest," the grow lights with attached timer definitely helps, and keeping my plants in indoor greenhouses in the Winter!! But I never knew I could use kitty litter as a soil amendment, the bathtub hack for when your away from home for sometime, and now I understand why my soil compacts after some time!! I will definitely start bottom watering!!😊🙏🙏

Instead of cork plates, I use yoghurt lids. They keep the moisture from pots away from the window sills. Zero costs and saving the environment from at least a little additional plastic waste.
I always use long tweezers for my cacti. They seem to hold on better than tongs. They are definitely the hardest to repot. I always enjoy your videos. 😊
I love your programs ❤ I took a small aquarium and cut some rose limbs to propagate in the ground outside, and covered the cuttings with the aquarium. The next spring 10 out of 12 cuttings rooted ❣️
I am a indoor plant mulcher. I find this is a great hack for not only retaining moisture in the hot summer but this also creates humidity right under those tropical plant leaves genius! This has been a total game changer for dry winters. I also just love the way it looks. I use bark, sphagnum moss, pumice, coconut husk and charcoal depending on the type of plant and their unique needs. I strongly encourage charcoal for all plants though it’s antibacterial 😉 Another humidity hack is to layer plants closely together. For lager plants I sit a small pot of pothos on the soil creating humidity and camouflage for the larger pot.
Great video, Richard! When I want to get those hard water lime spots off new bought plants or even bringing your plants from the outside to inside I simply mix 1 teaspoon of Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap with 4 cups of warm water wipe on and it becomes shiny and clean again :))
5:00 Great point, especially if this contains zeolite, which is rather abandoned and not scars resource as perlite. It's is porous without any processing, I use it for blueberry cultivation and as mulc, depending on the size of a fraction.
Wouldn't a moist paper towel work just as well (if not better for non flat leaves) than a lint roller to see if you have pests? Also an alternative for using a mason jar as a humidity dome for small plant or cuttings, is to just put the whole plant in a ziplock bag. I also use ziplock bags to give extra moisture to unfurling leaves that get stuck.
31:04 I cut old plastic spice or pill bottles in half or thirds w/ a utility blade to create risers inside my cache pot. Cutting plastic water bottles into rings works too. Helps w/ drainage and also makes it easier to grip when the cache pot is too deep. (U can even turn an iron on low/Rayon and rub the cut bottle over a piece of parchment on the iron to smooth the cut edge or take it down to a more precise height.) I often poke a hole in the inner plastic pot w/ a hot nail or pin and tie a loop of fishing line to make a lil "handle." Ez to pull out of snug cache pots.
I'm an indoor plant mulcher. In the summer after mowing the lawn I take handfuls of grass clippings and mulch the plants. I like the way they look and the clippings are very easy to arrange nicely, especially on little pots.
I was thinking of putting my neon pothos and my marble queen in the same pot. As of now they're growing beautifully in a 4 inch pot . Both pots need to be eventually repotted because their roots are showing their face through the bottom. How do I decide what size pot to use to put both plants in? Remember their current pots are 4 inch pots. Thanks Richard you are my plant savior.
@MsLevi67 You're so right about their tendency to clump, but imagine that clump of wet clay just sitting in the soil, holding onto too much water for our precious plants. 👍 It's always good, though, to question random suggestions.

Great hacks, and fantastic advice. 👍 Totally an indoor plant mulcher myself, I use coco bark or orchid bark mix usually. Plus, the idea you must break up plant roots is an old wives tale, and originally only for outdoor plants. To my mind, the whole idea that the plant may strangle itself always sounded a bit sus, but maybe I just give plants a bit more credit. That's the reason I also love bottom watering, it gives the plant a chance to take up the water itself.
It's an old wives' tale about teasing roots. It's only really trees grown by seed that need their roots teased because they have a tap root. If the bottom of the plant is compacted with roots, it is a good idea to loosen the bottom a little bit. It encourages roots to move down in the potting media when potting up a size. But not the sides, unless the roots are growing around in a circle inside the pot. (I have a degree in Nursery Production) ..... I love your hacks 😊 really clever.
My momma grew seeds from avocadoes. :-) She grew ivy and had them growing along her walls. :-) Makes me smile to think of the things she grew. So much great info.
I also use command hooks to train plants but use cassette or video tape to hang plant arms from the hooks. Then you adjust or hang more than one per hook and plants don't get stuck in the hooks.❤

25:05 I also done the hole in the handle and I hated it so much (sorry) because when I watered it the water came out from both directions so when I made another one of these I made sure to make no hole in the handle !😅
I got a notebook to write notes with the name of the channel I hit the ideas from. I save the video to my favorites. As I write the note I also mark the time stamp of the video. Really helps and saves time. I’m just learning again as it’s been 10 years since I gardened. I’m loving this hobby. I’m getting compliments from my neighbors.
🌱 I make files in UA-cam to save videos I like going back to. For instance, I made a file named House Plants. Then, any video I want to keep as reference, I save it to that file and have it available for future reference. I also use the "Notes" feature on the cellular phone. Again, I make Notes named after the subject and inside I file the link and some info to remind me why I saved it.

oh man, I was fighting gnats after I bought an infested second-hand plant. I tried everything, 3 things worked in the end - hoover and daily hovering the flying ones; sticky yellow "flowers" to catch the ones that are taking off and finally, 1.6% solution of hydrogen peroxide to water the plant instead of water - finally no gnats in the house!
I've added ivy - all types - to every plant I have, practically. I love the graceful, "victorian" look. Plus, it add incredible interest and texture not to mention lushness.
I love watching your videos! I have over 300 plants, most of which are top watered. I put Mosquito Bits in a tea strainer and hang it in my water can. I also use the yellow sticky traps I've seen in your videos. I change out the MBs every two weeks. I have no gnats. I hope you give it a try!😊
❤ avacado seeds do not need tooth picks. Use a narrow containers top.(bottle neck type).The bottom can be touched by water. It helps prevent it from splitting in half
I have used popsicles sticks for plant names but the sticks rot and I’m left without a name. Now I write the name on the plastic pot with magic marker and I have the name until I repot.
I was always taught that plant roots are delicate and sensitive and to touch them as little as possible when repotting. I’ve never broken them up. Hmmm.
Worm castings is also a good , and a rather soft natural fertilizer , i mean soft as in , not heavy in chemicals like most synthetics. A quick Google shows , It contains minerals such as concentrated nitrates, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. Because it is purely organic fertilizer, worm castings can increase a plant's yield, protect both soil and plants from diseases, and help the soil retain moisture.
Worm castings also have contain high levels of chitinase - a natural insect repellent. This enzyme helps dissolve chitin, the substance that comprises the exo-skeletons of most insects. When used properly, worm castings help to repel chewing and sucking insects like aphids, whiteflies, and hard-shelled plant bugs.

One more important thing, friends: please be sure to always use gardening gloves & wash ur hands immediately after working with plants. I got a terrible staph infection last year in my hand that landed me in the hospital for a week & having to have emergency surgery to remove tendons from my hand that had become diseased. The same thing happened to another gardener friend of mine, who was pricked by a thorn from a plant which ended up getting infected.

The lemon water hack killed some of my plants unfortunately 😂 do not use this hack on the thin leafed plants please, my nice calathea died within minutes and I could not revive it, and thus it was pronounced dead the next day 💔

No I don't personally think it's moisture, as I've experienced this in basically every scenario, and mold grows regardless of moisture conditions , as long as there's bio matter , mold is a possibility at some stage .
It can be down to the choice of soil I think..🤔 as I grow alot of Begonia see , I have over 100 different types and a few use leaf molds or things like that , so it's possible that can cause issues with untreated wood maybe , seems likely 🤷♂️ but I think it's probably more likely down to the fact that on large , most chopsticks are made from soft woods & most chopsticks people would use , would likely be from a takeaway box or something like that (assuming obviously) and there not intended to be used more than once , so there usually not coated or treated in anyway other than being made & sanded down , which usually means even after the first water , the wood starts wicking it up.. but plastic ones... , plastic ones are game changers 🔥

I buy colorful scarves from thrift stores and tie them around my pots, gives them a little bling I enjoy every time I look at them. I keep the scarves in place with stick on hooks.

Splinting a broken stem works if it's not broken all the way through. It did for my Orchid, only it was the root not the stem that broke. The velamen had cracked, so, I took two toothpicks and wrapped it with some soft bias tape from my sewing kit and voila, it healed!

I’ve got a great hack-if u accidentally left ur plant too long & the soil is bone dry, it’s difficult for the soil to absorb water, esp Peet based soil. So add a drop of castille soap (it’s made from vegetable oils) to ur watering can. This helps the soil absorb the water. I use this hack often so I can attest that it does not harm ur plants. Just don’t use dish soap or other super harsh soaps that have a lot of detergents (although I’ve done this every once in a while when in a pinch)

I use a plastic oil pan from the dollar store!
One of my favorite things to set my plants on when I bring them in for the winter is a diatomaceous mat. They often sell them as dish drying mats and such, but they work wonders for keeping my wood surfaces from suffering water damage when I water my plants. I’ve started keeping one underneath every single plant I have in my home so that if I accidentally splash a bit of water or the pot leaks a tad, the pad absorbs it and keeps my floors and counters dry.
For the repotting leaf protection, I always use plastic wrap just around the upper portion of the plant. This way I can see leaves and stems clearly, I can work around them easily, I don’t have to tape anything, and it’s also safe to leave in place to support the plant until it acclimates to its new pot.
Great ideas. An alternative remedy I came up with for the terracotta-saucer-condensation problem was to get some of the small self adhesive felt pads that you can buy for furniture feet. Cut the circles into quarters and put four equally spaced under the edge of the saucer. Not only did it remove condensation issues but they're also easier to move around without roughly rubbing on the surface. They're not visible underneath, doesn't alter the aesthetic. Very cheap as a single circle was enough for each saucer and you got 12 in a pack for £1.

@@kikki2012 hi they don't. I cut the circles into multiple pieces so that they go further. Quarter circles. So you get 4 out of one piece.

I save all different size plastic lids to put in the bottoms of the decorative pots for air circulation and leftover potential water and also to raise them higher to fit the pot if need be.

Another hack to dress up plain pots i just saw is to take a sweater/jumper (for the English 😊) you no longer want and fit your pot inside one of the sleeves just up to the edge of the top of the pot, and cut the sweater where the bottom of the pot is. Its a sweater for your pots. ❤

I bought beneficial mites for thrips and spider mites, and a tube of soil mites that eat fungus gnat eggs/larvae, and it’s only been maybe a week but I already haven’t seen any gnats for a couple of days! I’d been battling them all summer (more than the couple that were around before) , and it was so annoying, so I’m VERY happy to see results already with the mites :)

This is the first time watching your video.
Very informative. I learned a few new things. Maybe your other videos aren’t as long but I’d like to see shorter ones. I’ll have to rewatch and take some notes.
One thing I do is fill empty gallon milk jugs with water and let them sit without lids for at least 24 hours. Supposedly that lets the chlorine and other bad things escape. Sometimes I put small traces of fertilizer in water or a small amount Epsom salt in. Mostly just plain water since I heard plants need a resting or dormant time over winter months.
I was glad to see there are others who are always propagating more plants. My counter is full of jars with starts in them. My husband doesn’t like it and tells me to just throw them away.
Anyway, I really enjoyed your podcast and will look forward to more. I also want to go back and catch the names of the others you mentioned.

I'm 62. Love Plants as far back as I can remember. I'm amazed by all the plants you have. Never had August Nats. I bet your wife just loves all those plants. I just love plants❤ They clean your air and give Oxygen. I was taught to make my own fertilizer. So many. I have a worm garden too. Worm castings, egg shell water, leaf tea, Confrey leaf ... and more. I have 12 aloe Vera plants. Some are huge.

Hello! Conversations from Pennsylvania USA. I just wanted to say I've never gotten irritated or annoyed with your and Kill This Plants videos. Very informative, non condescending and just mature. You both have a fun sense of humor without making it all about you. I have a question if I may. I have gathered tree bark to make my own chunky soil for my Monsteras and Snake and ZZ plants. Is there a " No no" I don't know about and if so how would you proceed making this soil?
Thanks! The thing that springs to mind is bugs and bacteria lurking in the wood. You'd need to break it down into small chunks to use in a soil mix. Very thrifty though i like it
I was thinking of sanitizing it if possible but then that adds chemicals into the environment which is not a road I want to take.
I think you can sanitize by baking it in your oven.

Can confirm snake plants and Christmas cactus live together well. A piece of the cactus was broken off so I popped it in with the snake plant like “that plant is doing well, you should stay alive in there” and they’re both thriving. It looks lovely having the tall snakes surrounded by droopy cactus stems and flowers 🌺 total accident but it’s now one of my favourite pots

Oh, I just received two orchid plants and listened to your videos for their care along with MissOrchidGirl. My plants are loving their better informed care I am giving them. It is possible to put avocado seeds directly into moist soil and they'll sprout. Bury them about halfway or a bit more. That way you're not making holes into the seed and the roots are acclimated to soil from the get go.

Yes, I worked as a plant care going to hotels,offices, Dr office, malls, caring for plants. We used the stick method for watering.

Omg…that candle container hack is TOP TIER! To think of all of the pretty candle holders I’ve thrown away over the years…😢.
I just took about 20 used candles that have about 1/2 inch of wax left, melted them down, and poured them together to make a new layered candle. I’ve been sitting here looking at all the pretty colored glass, not wanting to throw them out and trying to figure out what to do with them. This video came at the perfect time! Lol

For other cuttings I have a hack where I put several cuttings straight into potting media in a pot, then place 3 chopsticks around the edges I then pop a thin freezer bag over the cuttings and chop sticks, then secure the see through plastic bag with an elastic band around the top of the pot. The chop sticks keep the bag from collapsing on the cuttings. It is a mini hot house, with all the humidity needed. Light gets through, air is let in through the holes in the plastic pot, it works like a treat.

I love all of these great tips!! I especially love using chopsticks for testing soil moisture or breaking up the soil, plastic containers for my propagations, Pothos cuttings and cinnamon for my cuttings, lemon juice/water for cleaning my Orchid leaves, showering my large plants to also mimic a "rainforest," the grow lights with attached timer definitely helps, and keeping my plants in indoor greenhouses in the Winter!!
But I never knew I could use kitty litter as a soil amendment, the bathtub hack for when your away from home for sometime, and now I understand why my soil compacts after some time!! I will definitely start bottom watering!!😊🙏🙏

Instead of cork plates, I use yoghurt lids. They keep the moisture from pots away from the window sills. Zero costs and saving the environment from at least a little additional plastic waste.

I am a indoor plant mulcher. I find this is a great hack for not only retaining moisture in the hot summer but this also creates humidity right under those tropical plant leaves genius! This has been a total game changer for dry winters. I also just love the way it looks. I use bark, sphagnum moss, pumice, coconut husk and charcoal depending on the type of plant and their unique needs. I strongly encourage charcoal for all plants though it’s antibacterial 😉 Another humidity hack is to layer plants closely together. For lager plants I sit a small pot of pothos on the soil creating humidity and camouflage for the larger pot.
Great video, Richard! When I want to get those hard water lime spots off new bought plants or even bringing your plants from the outside to inside I simply mix 1 teaspoon of Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap with 4 cups of warm water wipe on and it becomes shiny and clean again :))

Great point, especially if this contains zeolite, which is rather abandoned and not scars resource as perlite. It's is porous without any processing, I use it for blueberry cultivation and as mulc, depending on the size of a fraction.

Wouldn't a moist paper towel work just as well (if not better for non flat leaves) than a lint roller to see if you have pests? Also an alternative for using a mason jar as a humidity dome for small plant or cuttings, is to just put the whole plant in a ziplock bag. I also use ziplock bags to give extra moisture to unfurling leaves that get stuck.

31:04 I cut old plastic spice or pill bottles in half or thirds w/ a utility blade to create risers inside my cache pot. Cutting plastic water bottles into rings works too. Helps w/ drainage and also makes it easier to grip when the cache pot is too deep. (U can even turn an iron on low/Rayon and rub the cut bottle over a piece of parchment on the iron to smooth the cut edge or take it down to a more precise height.)
I often poke a hole in the inner plastic pot w/ a hot nail or pin and tie a loop of fishing line to make a lil "handle." Ez to pull out of snug cache pots.

I'm an indoor plant mulcher. In the summer after mowing the lawn I take handfuls of grass clippings and mulch the plants. I like the way they look and the clippings are very easy to arrange nicely, especially on little pots.
I was thinking of putting my neon pothos and my marble queen in the same pot. As of now they're growing beautifully in a 4 inch pot . Both pots need to be eventually repotted because their roots are showing their face through the bottom. How do I decide what size pot to use to put both plants in? Remember their current pots are 4 inch pots. Thanks Richard you are my plant savior.

Great hacks, and fantastic advice. 👍 Totally an indoor plant mulcher myself, I use coco bark or orchid bark mix usually. Plus, the idea you must break up plant roots is an old wives tale, and originally only for outdoor plants. To my mind, the whole idea that the plant may strangle itself always sounded a bit sus, but maybe I just give plants a bit more credit. That's the reason I also love bottom watering, it gives the plant a chance to take up the water itself.

It's an old wives' tale about teasing roots. It's only really trees grown by seed that need their roots teased because they have a tap root. If the bottom of the plant is compacted with roots, it is a good idea to loosen the bottom a little bit. It encourages roots to move down in the potting media when potting up a size. But not the sides, unless the roots are growing around in a circle inside the pot. (I have a degree in Nursery Production) ..... I love your hacks 😊 really clever.
My momma grew seeds from avocadoes. :-) She grew ivy and had them growing along her walls. :-) Makes me smile to think of the things she grew. So much great info.
I also use command hooks to train plants but use cassette or video tape to hang plant arms from the hooks. Then you adjust or hang more than one per hook and plants don't get stuck in the hooks.❤

I got a notebook to write notes with the name of the channel I hit the ideas from. I save the video to my favorites. As I write the note I also mark the time stamp of the video. Really helps and saves time. I’m just learning again as it’s been 10 years since I gardened. I’m loving this hobby. I’m getting compliments from my neighbors.
🌱 I make files in UA-cam to save videos I like going back to. For instance, I made a file named House Plants. Then, any video I want to keep as reference, I save it to that file and have it available for future reference.
I also use the "Notes" feature on the cellular phone. Again, I make Notes named after the subject and inside I file the link and some info to remind me why I saved it.

oh man, I was fighting gnats after I bought an infested second-hand plant. I tried everything, 3 things worked in the end - hoover and daily hovering the flying ones; sticky yellow "flowers" to catch the ones that are taking off and finally, 1.6% solution of hydrogen peroxide to water the plant instead of water - finally no gnats in the house!
I've added ivy - all types - to every plant I have, practically. I love the graceful, "victorian" look. Plus, it add incredible interest and texture not to mention lushness.
I love watching your videos! I have over 300 plants, most of which are top watered. I put Mosquito Bits in a tea strainer and hang it in my water can. I also use the yellow sticky traps I've seen in your videos. I change out the MBs every two weeks. I have no gnats. I hope you give it a try!😊

❤ avacado seeds do not need tooth picks. Use a narrow containers top.(bottle neck type).The bottom can be touched by water. It helps prevent it from splitting in half
I have used popsicles sticks for plant names but the sticks rot and I’m left without a name. Now I write the name on the plastic pot with magic marker and I have the name until I repot.

I was always taught that plant roots are delicate and sensitive and to touch them as little as possible when repotting. I’ve never broken them up. Hmmm.
You just need to be gentle. Dont bend or break the roots

I do the same thing. The worm castings really improved my soils health.
Worm castings also have contain high levels of chitinase - a natural insect repellent. This enzyme helps dissolve chitin, the substance that comprises the exo-skeletons of most insects. When used properly, worm castings help to repel chewing and sucking insects like aphids, whiteflies, and hard-shelled plant bugs.
