I have a plant like this - it is 40 years old . My mom had it for a couple of years and gave it to me when my son was 2 - he will be 40 this year. We have been dragging inside in the winter and outside in the summer for years. I think it may be at end of life - the leaves are brown but I am going to trim it up really well and repot in several pots.
I also have this plant, it's 35 years old, lived with me from my student years to now. I am living in a smaller house now, but he is getting bigger all the time. Have to split it, it hurts, but I want to keep our friendship alive in this way :-D
@@aspirativemusicproduction2135 I am inclined to say yes they can survive in the sun because they do very well in Florida and they grow very large planted in the ground!! Mine is in a pot and since I live in Georgia, I have to take mine in and out to shelter it from our crazy winters.
@@jettmorris6985 it is so big, I can no longer move it on my own. Hoping for help to get it into the garage this year. About 10 years ago, we unwound the air roots and they were over 20 feet long. Something about cutting it scares me because it is so pretty and continues to unfurl beautiful leaves!!

I went through the neighborhood and picked these up in everyone's front yard. They were cutting them away after Hurricane Ian... I scored big time! I also grabbed up broken Plumeria. I can't wait for my new plants destined for the dump... Renew in my yard instead!
Glad I found your very interesting video! I won't be afraid to do some chopping of my huge Philodendron Selloum! I just brought it in from being out for the summer and oh my!
Thank you so much!!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I have some of these, thriving, in the ground in South MIssissippi, and I want to separate and spread it. This has given me the confidence to do it. Thank you 🙏
What a terrific video he gets right to what you're wanting to see and he's so smart I'm hooked this is my new plant guy everything he said made perfect sense and he said it fast and got me through it and I loved him thank you
Finally, exactly what I was looking for. I was wondering about the huge root ball, and if I could get rid of some of the roots and aerial roots. Never thought about cutting it off; maybe next year.
New subscriber! Love your video, plan to separate mine today. Plant belonged to my mother and its over 30 years old and i sruggle during winter keeping it alive indoors. Now i can share with my sisers. Thank you for such wonderful video
I wish I saw this video a few years ago! I have the same plant that just keeps getting larger and larger every year, to the point I can't manage it anymore - it's now larger than me. It's almost too big for me to even attempt pruning by myself. I was thinking of selling it since it's too large for my living situation, but now I'm going to try pruning and splitting to at least keep a smaller version and maybe sell/give away what's left!
Your sound quality is amazing considering how obviously windy it is. I have a 10 year old plant that is just one big trunk, can you advise me on how to make it smaller like those?
Lol I like how you kept reassuring us how you've done it for years !🤣 bc my jaw dropped but I needed to know this as I plan on taking some into the house.
Me too! I’ve been desperately waiting for spring to come so it doesn’t freaking die. I’m also going to try to make more than one but if it was only one good plant I’d be happy with that alone. It got way too close to death from a frost and I thought I was going to lose it completely but it hung out and it’s pushed out a handful of new leaves but they’re struggling because I also think it’s freaking infested with fungus gnats or god knows what else. Hopefully not; but I will say, I did not expect this to be the advice because this is basically what happened after the frost and I was losing my mind every time one of those huge stalks just popped off 😂 but it’s march and we’ve made it thru the worst of winter I think?? Haha but I’m super excited to get this root bound to filth goddess plant out and into a new home 😂
I’ve acquired a massive split leaf philodendron that appears to have never been maintained. It’s more of a tree. I’m planning a slaughter this spring. The top of the soil is a tangle of roots. It might get ugly. I wonder if he’s going to need to have this 3 foot trunk severed. Still researching. He only has a handful of big leaves. Wish me luck…… ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
That looks so much better than my mom’s plant had 6000 aerial roots which when she gave it to me, it only had two leaves, so I chose to re-bury all the aerial roots because I thought they were the kind that go in the soil not climbing in attaching to trees I split it in half and put it into pops one for me and one for my sister, so we would each have a part of moms plant The big thing she had was a bow window in the living room and she would set the plants that like a lot of sunlight they didn’t get 100% sunlight because it was a crabapple tree in front of the window. For years, it was beautiful, but she never ever reported it and never ever change the soil.
Any recommendations on how to deal with one which was let go rampant and has thick trunk like roots? Any help would be appreciated. I only ask for help cause the said plant is at 6 different growths like ones in your pot but larger. lol like jungle large. They are heading towards neighbors fence and house foundation has me tad worried. Oh and isn't potted just in yard lol ty
Please help. I have one of these plants. I need to repot it. Is it OK to cut off all of the root runners that's trying to grow out of the pot. I've had it for so many years that cutting off the old bottom leaves makes it look like it is on a stalk. It's has finally had a baby that is growing in the pot. Thank you for showing me how to split the plant. What do I do about the original plant that looks like it is on a stalk. I Love this plant. I was afraid to cut on it for fear that I would kill it. Help 😢
How do u divide one that has grown in the grown that is a huge tree? Can u grow from the leaves? There are hundreds of plants crammed in that can’t be dug out! I could only cut off a stalk with a few long sent out roots, and small roots. I had to pull it out, and almost broke my back! What should I do with it?
Hi man, my philodendron stems are all browing & I accidentally pull the last 2 standing stems, and now it's just the main bottom trunk/root whatever u call it. Can I still save it? I just trimmed the excessive roots as well. But now just showing the main trunk without any stems. I saw in another video to cut open the trunk facing upwards but does it work?.
