There's so many moons that are just like "grind out this challenge for an achievement moon" or "randomly placed around the map, but because of the map you always know where they are so they become fetch quests" by that point

Super Mario Sunshine deserves a full Scott the Woz video treatment imo That game is so goddamn interesting, from its weird design choices to plethora of glitches Like Scott said, it's the second worst 3D Mario game by process of elimination, but I think it's the single most fascinating one out of the whole bunch
also people talk a lot about 64's fun and creative movement but sunshine has really complex and fun movement to master. sunshine speedruns for example are sooo cool, some of the coolest movement mechanics in any video game to be honest. although it's definitely weird at first
@@lovelaxo The biggest problem with Sunshine is that FLUDD restricts Mario's movements. It is atrocious that Mario can only move freely in those secret levels because Shadow Mario steals FLUDD
Bowser fury is sort of like that, but as far as a sequel to sunshine I think it could work since they're are other islands aside the dolphin one as seen in the beginning movie and so they could center it around them.
I wouldn't even need a sequel. I'd be happy with an expanded and revamped rerelease. Make the game longer, make some of the final challenges better, and give an actual reward for 100% completion, and a New Game+ mode.
Imagine a Mario Sunshine meets Luigi's Mansion crossover game- with the Bros both wearing their funny backpacks accessories. A pressure washer and a vacuum.
I said this on the Switch collection video, but that bit on Odyssey is very accurate. I absolutely love that game to bits, it’s arguably my favorite game ever, it even catapulted me into becoming an artist, but good lord it’s hard to replay in full sometimes.
To me, it doesn't take away from the original playthrough. Exploration-based games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are always going to be less interesting to replay, because discovery is essentially one of the primary game mechanics. It's always going to be less interesting on the second playthrough. And honestly, why is a second playthrough even necessary, when getting to 100% completion takes so long the first time around? I know I already got my money's worth because I spent over 100 hours in each game, and almost all of that time was fun and engaging.

I don't get the problem, I replay it like twice a year. Just don't get all the moons and do whatever you feel like. I'm not sure what going for full completion once a year is supposed to accomplish.
@@quibquiberton4184 That's most likely a controversial hot take, but for me it honestly already significantly overstayed its welcome the first time, and I only played till I completed darker side, not even all moons. And I'm one of those people who have like 1000h in Minecraft and Age of Empires. I NEVER had that feeling with either 3D Land or 3D World, and I played those like a decade apart.
@@Alias_Anybody I think that's fair. Mario Odyssey's style isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's an excellent game that only grows on me the more I play it (because of its imo unmatched controls and excellent atmosphere) but it has some superfluous content. I think that the point of the game as a year-one title was to showcase the Switch's pick-up-and-play portable nature, which is why many moons are so quick and easy to find. At the same time, having so many moons takes away some of the satisfaction of finding the harder, more interesting moons.
Odyssey in anything but S tier is crazy to me! That game is so expertly crafted! And for me it gets better every time I play it, which I can’t say about all of the games.
What in the hell did they have against Wario Land. That's one of the best 2d platformers ever, making a unique moveset for Wario, being a much more open experience where other levels have an effect on the rest of the world, and where the money actually matters a lot, with so many new additions that distinguish it from the average Mario platformer. At least have it in B tier, this tier list just baffles me.

Nah bruh. The game is good but it having 999 moons really set this game back in so many ways. Getting a moon means absolutely nothing and many of them were way too easy to get. Again, the game is fun but it’s not perfect

Hot take: Mario Maker should be a desktop application. Creating levels in MM1 was OK with the touchscreen, I haven't played MM2, but I can understand that it's complicated without it. Mouse and keyboard would blow the Gamepad touchscreen out of the water when it comes to creating levels.

It was an odd point to put Odyssey in A because "I only wanna play until Bowser and Mushroom Kingdom" but it's like, you basically beat the game at that point. You saw the credits roll. That doesn't sound like bad replayability to me. Odyssey is an easy S for me personally.
IMO saying mario odyssey isnt S tier because getting max moons is tedious and annoying is like saying botw isnt S tier because getting all 900 korok seeds is tedious and annoying. i dont think its something the game designers really expected you to do more than once, if at all. darker side, the champion's road equivalent, unlocks at 500 moons which is just over half of them. and like, think about that. the thing that's usually the reward for going out of your way to complete every single unlock requirement, like all the green stars in smg2, or getting the top of the flagpole in every level in 3d world, unlocks after collecting only 57% of the total moons in game. to the developers, getting just 500 moons was enough of a requirement. and the game barely even has a 100% reward, so clearly 100% was not something the developers thought every single player needed to do. just like the korok seeds, there's an abundance of them so you can find them everywhere you look, not to force you to hunt down every last one. its still an amazingly executed game and i don't think "having a long but tedious postgame" should be enough to lower it down a whole tier
I was 17 when Mario 64 DS dropped, junior year of HS. I remember saving any money I could to buy it, because of what you guys said. The concept of portable Mario 64 at that time was absolutely mind-boggling, and I had to have it.
I have to disagree with Odyssey not being replayable. I agree if you want to go for 100%, but just since moons are your progress currency and there are so many of them, you can select the ones you want and never look back. The vibes on that game are just fantastic, the music, the moves, oh my. Top Mario game of all time for me.
I'd agree that it's still a fantastic game, but it kinda ends with a whimper. Do the story, collect the postgame moons, beat the true final level, and either stop there or quit when you get bored of the moons. I think we can all agree that the game would be greatly improved if they cut 100 or so of the least fun filler moons.
@@pokemnfan1I think that’s just an issue with the mentality about “completing games.” Somebody did a video essay on how you can play games until you feel satisfied. They add a ton of collectibles for the people who just can’t ever get enough. They aren’t anticipating for most people to get every moon. They added an absurd amount so you could skip a lot that you don’t like and still have a great time with it!
Big agree mark. I find it super replayable. It’s easily my most replayed 3D game. I like trying to go different routes for the main story and I don’t mind that 100% is a bit more of a grind because the game is just bigger. Of course you’re gonna play Odyssey less than the others because it’s like twice as long as the next longest Mario game. And that also means if you play 100 hours of Odyssey vs 100 hours of any other Mario Game, you’re retreading a lot less of the same content since Odyssey is so much bigger. I wish Scott would replay it. It’s so fun to got at over and over again.

That’s part of the problem with odyssey. I also don’t agree that it’s legitimate to brush off criticism of the hundreds of crappier moons by just arguing you don’t have to get them. It’s content! It’s content that isn’t fun! The game has to be criticized for that!

It’s a change in game philosophy, bigger games can have optional content. There’s nothing wrong with it. If people don’t want every moon, nobody’s forcing them to get them all. It’s there for people who like it, like me. I got every single moon just because it was fun!
it's crazy how much knowledge both of you have for all of the games. i barely remember the plots and levels for these games, let alone how the controls felt, playable characters, etc.
I think there is a strong argument for New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe for being at least an A tier game. At its core it’s inspired by Super Mario World with a connected map, Yoshis, and secret areas and worlds. It features modern gameplay and presentation with 4 player multiplayer and HD graphics, also included is a wide range of collectible coins, challenges, and essentially a second more difficult quest in Super Luigi U. The game encompasses most of the great qualities of a 2D Mario game. Now is the game the 4th entry in a long line of very similar 2D Mario games? Yes. But it’s the best one yet, and of the 4 entries you only really need to play this one.
tbh NSMBU Deluxe is just boring to me. Most other 2d Mario's are insanely replayable to me but it's one of the only ones I would drop before I finish the first few worlds. I actually think it's a decent game and as you said it does most of the basics right, but it might be things like bland level design or maybe it's still the New Super series fatigue. I can't really pinpoint why i find it so boring compared to other Mario's. I still haven't given Luigi U a fair go so that's one that I need to go back to
Super Mario World is a definitive S tier for me personally. The map is by far the best I’ve played in any 2D Mario game to date. The secrets are amazing to discover. Also, it’s the first appearance of Magikoopa, Yoshi, and the legendary Star Road. Sure the game has less power ups, but it doesn’t need the extra power ups to make it any better. It’s an absolute masterpiece.
@@turboshazed7370 that I can’t disagree. Seeing the koopalings using the wonder abilities would have been really cool. Or just different bosses in general like they did in 3D World. Bowser was fun. Easy, but really fun.
The lack of an inventory and things to do outside of the levels on the map are why I prefer Mario 3. SMW is an incredible game, but it always bothered me that they took away the things that made SMB3 so good. I still put it in S teir though, since both these games are like apples and oranges in terms of quality.

The first new Super Mario Bros isn't the only one with a koopa shell power up. In 3D world, if you crouch while running with a shell, you can ride around inside. So much more fun than the blue shell because you actually have some control over the direction.
Super Mario World was designed in a way so that kids could talk about it for hours in the playground about all the secrets and how to finish it. Alot of people were spurred on to play the game because their peers were talking about it so much. I had a friend that ended up knowing everything and could beat the game in under half hour. Before speedrunning and internet.
Nah I reckon they’re pretty spot on. So many unnecessary moons that require no skill. Especially having to buy a heap of em. That just felt lazy and adds unnecessary bloat for full completion. Completing this game isn’t fun and people like to do that with their 3D Mario games. Especially if you’ve played Mario 64 beforehand.
1:56:40 If you want to get technical, Across the Spider Verse did show off new gameplay of Spider-Man 2. It wasn't even close to the focus and it was only like 2 seconds, but it was a movie that showed off new gameplay footage of an unreleased game
Mario Advance 2 actually tracks if you collect the dragon coins in levels. Makes going back and collecting all of them a lot more fun and meaningful, which adds a surprising amount of content to the game imo

Dear Scott: You can actually mod SM64 DS on the 3DS to allow real 360 degree movement with the circle pad, cause it's in the code for the touchscreen anyway.
Took some of the gimmicks from the previous game and made it better. The whole skeleton lizard rollercoaster ride is 100 times better than any snake block section.
As a Mario World on GBA fan: they made SO many slight tweaks to the controls in comparison to the original that significantly improve the quality of life for me. Having the drill jump be a shoulder button is something I'm astonished wasn't in the original. Luigi's skill set and specifically how they affect stuff like coin blocks and Yoshi's actions were such an unnecessary yet appreciated addition. Though yeah... I do agree on the washed out colors. Good video! Also: didn't know how near-definitive Mario Deluxe was, so that was fun to learn about.
Yes! I feel the same way! The GBA version also doesn't downgrade you to small Mario right away when you get hit as fire Mario like the first game does. Putting this anywhere below high A is a sin! Also Nathaniel is very ballsy for saying Mario World should not be in S tier. I personally love it more than super Mario Bros 3.
3D Land is the most underrated Mario game. It's almost a perfect game. Especially playing it in 3d on citra emulator on a giant 3d screen. S rank. My favorite modern Mario game
@traviscunningham7062 Not necessarily. The first halve of the world starts off easy. But once u get to World 3, things do get pretty challenging. It's not the hardest 3D Mario game by any means. But it's still fairly challenging.
I will always love Galaxy 2. Any platformers that came before Galaxy 1 and 2, namely Frogger 1 and 2 and maybe Pac Man World was like that extra fun you never knew you needed but glad that you have. So of course I'm still going to want a Galaxy 3 after all this time. Off topic, also want another Zelda game to be more Ocarina/Twilight Princess vibe again. I love DKC Tropical Freeze, but have been playing DKC Returns just as often on both Wii U and 3DS.
tbh i surprisingly didn't hate The Lost Levels that much, I even went through the same game 8 times to unlock the letter worlds. (and no, you can do it while dying and continuing on the same world to unlock it). Tbh, beating it 8 times and getting better at the game each time going through it kind of helped me get through the letter worlds since I was more comfortable with the game by that time. Somehow I enjoyed my overall experience with it
I think modern gamers forget that these games were meant to be played over and over again. If you try to brute force the secret levels after playing through the normal levels only once, you're going to have a bad time
Less iconic and groundbreaking. Odyssey is awesome, don't get me wrong, but it didn't revolutionize gaming or have the same impact on the world in general. Not a very objective view of its entertainment value I guess, but, works for ranking
New Super Mario Bros. Wii will always be S tier in my mind solely for the memories attached to the game. Me and my brother played this game all the time and some of my happiest memories are me playing this game with him
Putting Odyssey at A is an absolute crime. Why is replay-ability even a factor? It’s an incredible experience through and through. You don’t even have to get all of the repetitive moons to progress through the story.

You've done World and Odyssey dirty. Odyssey for the way it controls alone is one of my favourite Mario games to replay, speed run, etc. World as well, the control is so excellent and sitting and beating in a day is still as enjoyable as the first time I beat it all those years ago.
I rate Mario Bros U Deluxe S tier because I have a 5-year old and a 7-year. Nabbit and Toadette is a god-send for them, especially for the 5-year old. I don't understand the hate for Nabbit or Toadette. You don't have to play them if you don't like them. But more choices are always welcome. Up to 4 in the family can play together as well. Not all mario games had such cool co-op feature
I’m fine that they exist, but a problem is that if you’re playing with 4 people then _someone_ has to play as Nabbit or Toadette, there’s no option to have all 4 players use a non-easy character.
to the point on Oddysee, where is it written where you HAVE to 100 percent it? I would argue sunshine, one of my favorite games, is also hampered by the damned blue coins.

It's a very very good game but I feel like the post-game does kinda bring it down. There's so many moons that are just like "grind out this challenge for an achievement moon" or "randomly placed around the map, but because of the map you always know where they are so they become fetch quests" by that point

Bowser fury is sort of like that, but as far as a sequel to sunshine I think it could work since they're are other islands aside the dolphin one as seen in the beginning movie and so they could center it around them.

I wouldn't even need a sequel. I'd be happy with an expanded and revamped rerelease. Make the game longer, make some of the final challenges better, and give an actual reward for 100% completion, and a New Game+ mode.

I said this on the Switch collection video, but that bit on Odyssey is very accurate. I absolutely love that game to bits, it’s arguably my favorite game ever, it even catapulted me into becoming an artist, but good lord it’s hard to replay in full sometimes.
To me, it doesn't take away from the original playthrough. Exploration-based games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are always going to be less interesting to replay, because discovery is essentially one of the primary game mechanics. It's always going to be less interesting on the second playthrough.
And honestly, why is a second playthrough even necessary, when getting to 100% completion takes so long the first time around? I know I already got my money's worth because I spent over 100 hours in each game, and almost all of that time was fun and engaging.

That's most likely a controversial hot take, but for me it honestly already significantly overstayed its welcome the first time, and I only played till I completed darker side, not even all moons. And I'm one of those people who have like 1000h in Minecraft and Age of Empires.
I NEVER had that feeling with either 3D Land or 3D World, and I played those like a decade apart.
@@Alias_Anybody I think that's fair. Mario Odyssey's style isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's an excellent game that only grows on me the more I play it (because of its imo unmatched controls and excellent atmosphere) but it has some superfluous content.
I think that the point of the game as a year-one title was to showcase the Switch's pick-up-and-play portable nature, which is why many moons are so quick and easy to find. At the same time, having so many moons takes away some of the satisfaction of finding the harder, more interesting moons.
Odyssey in anything but S tier is crazy to me! That game is so expertly crafted! And for me it gets better every time I play it, which I can’t say about all of the games.

What in the hell did they have against Wario Land. That's one of the best 2d platformers ever, making a unique moveset for Wario, being a much more open experience where other levels have an effect on the rest of the world, and where the money actually matters a lot, with so many new additions that distinguish it from the average Mario platformer. At least have it in B tier, this tier list just baffles me.

Hot take: Mario Maker should be a desktop application. Creating levels in MM1 was OK with the touchscreen, I haven't played MM2, but I can understand that it's complicated without it. Mouse and keyboard would blow the Gamepad touchscreen out of the water when it comes to creating levels.

It was an odd point to put Odyssey in A because "I only wanna play until Bowser and Mushroom Kingdom" but it's like, you basically beat the game at that point. You saw the credits roll. That doesn't sound like bad replayability to me. Odyssey is an easy S for me personally.
IMO saying mario odyssey isnt S tier because getting max moons is tedious and annoying is like saying botw isnt S tier because getting all 900 korok seeds is tedious and annoying. i dont think its something the game designers really expected you to do more than once, if at all. darker side, the champion's road equivalent, unlocks at 500 moons which is just over half of them. and like, think about that. the thing that's usually the reward for going out of your way to complete every single unlock requirement, like all the green stars in smg2, or getting the top of the flagpole in every level in 3d world, unlocks after collecting only 57% of the total moons in game. to the developers, getting just 500 moons was enough of a requirement. and the game barely even has a 100% reward, so clearly 100% was not something the developers thought every single player needed to do. just like the korok seeds, there's an abundance of them so you can find them everywhere you look, not to force you to hunt down every last one. its still an amazingly executed game and i don't think "having a long but tedious postgame" should be enough to lower it down a whole tier

I have to disagree with Odyssey not being replayable. I agree if you want to go for 100%, but just since moons are your progress currency and there are so many of them, you can select the ones you want and never look back. The vibes on that game are just fantastic, the music, the moves, oh my. Top Mario game of all time for me.
I'd agree that it's still a fantastic game, but it kinda ends with a whimper. Do the story, collect the postgame moons, beat the true final level, and either stop there or quit when you get bored of the moons.
I think we can all agree that the game would be greatly improved if they cut 100 or so of the least fun filler moons.

They add a ton of collectibles for the people who just can’t ever get enough. They aren’t anticipating for most people to get every moon. They added an absurd amount so you could skip a lot that you don’t like and still have a great time with it!
Big agree mark. I find it super replayable. It’s easily my most replayed 3D game. I like trying to go different routes for the main story and I don’t mind that 100% is a bit more of a grind because the game is just bigger. Of course you’re gonna play Odyssey less than the others because it’s like twice as long as the next longest Mario game. And that also means if you play 100 hours of Odyssey vs 100 hours of any other Mario Game, you’re retreading a lot less of the same content since Odyssey is so much bigger.
I wish Scott would replay it. It’s so fun to got at over and over again.

I mean I assume they’ve both massive Mario fans. I’m the same way with other franchises like sonic where I remember every single game in detail.
I think there is a strong argument for New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe for being at least an A tier game. At its core it’s inspired by Super Mario World with a connected map, Yoshis, and secret areas and worlds. It features modern gameplay and presentation with 4 player multiplayer and HD graphics, also included is a wide range of collectible coins, challenges, and essentially a second more difficult quest in Super Luigi U. The game encompasses most of the great qualities of a 2D Mario game. Now is the game the 4th entry in a long line of very similar 2D Mario games? Yes. But it’s the best one yet, and of the 4 entries you only really need to play this one.
For some reason so many people hate this game. I've played it to completion with my family and it's undeniably an excellent mainline Mario game
1 and 2 are still better, but this one is absolutely not far behind.
tbh NSMBU Deluxe is just boring to me. Most other 2d Mario's are insanely replayable to me but it's one of the only ones I would drop before I finish the first few worlds. I actually think it's a decent game and as you said it does most of the basics right, but it might be things like bland level design or maybe it's still the New Super series fatigue. I can't really pinpoint why i find it so boring compared to other Mario's. I still haven't given Luigi U a fair go so that's one that I need to go back to

Super Mario World is a definitive S tier for me personally. The map is by far the best I’ve played in any 2D Mario game to date. The secrets are amazing to discover. Also, it’s the first appearance of Magikoopa, Yoshi, and the legendary Star Road. Sure the game has less power ups, but it doesn’t need the extra power ups to make it any better. It’s an absolute masterpiece.

The lack of an inventory and things to do outside of the levels on the map are why I prefer Mario 3. SMW is an incredible game, but it always bothered me that they took away the things that made SMB3 so good. I still put it in S teir though, since both these games are like apples and oranges in terms of quality.

The first new Super Mario Bros isn't the only one with a koopa shell power up. In 3D world, if you crouch while running with a shell, you can ride around inside. So much more fun than the blue shell because you actually have some control over the direction.

Super Mario World was designed in a way so that kids could talk about it for hours in the playground about all the secrets and how to finish it. Alot of people were spurred on to play the game because their peers were talking about it so much. I had a friend that ended up knowing everything and could beat the game in under half hour. Before speedrunning and internet.

Nah I reckon they’re pretty spot on. So many unnecessary moons that require no skill. Especially having to buy a heap of em. That just felt lazy and adds unnecessary bloat for full completion. Completing this game isn’t fun and people like to do that with their 3D Mario games. Especially if you’ve played Mario 64 beforehand.

Mario Advance 2 actually tracks if you collect the dragon coins in levels. Makes going back and collecting all of them a lot more fun and meaningful, which adds a surprising amount of content to the game imo

Took some of the gimmicks from the previous game and made it better. The whole skeleton lizard rollercoaster ride is 100 times better than any snake block section.
As a Mario World on GBA fan: they made SO many slight tweaks to the controls in comparison to the original that significantly improve the quality of life for me. Having the drill jump be a shoulder button is something I'm astonished wasn't in the original. Luigi's skill set and specifically how they affect stuff like coin blocks and Yoshi's actions were such an unnecessary yet appreciated addition. Though yeah... I do agree on the washed out colors. Good video! Also: didn't know how near-definitive Mario Deluxe was, so that was fun to learn about.
Yes! I feel the same way! The GBA version also doesn't downgrade you to small Mario right away when you get hit as fire Mario like the first game does. Putting this anywhere below high A is a sin! Also Nathaniel is very ballsy for saying Mario World should not be in S tier. I personally love it more than super Mario Bros 3.

I will always love Galaxy 2. Any platformers that came before Galaxy 1 and 2, namely Frogger 1 and 2 and maybe Pac Man World was like that extra fun you never knew you needed but glad that you have. So of course I'm still going to want a Galaxy 3 after all this time. Off topic, also want another Zelda game to be more Ocarina/Twilight Princess vibe again. I love DKC Tropical Freeze, but have been playing DKC Returns just as often on both Wii U and 3DS.
tbh i surprisingly didn't hate The Lost Levels that much, I even went through the same game 8 times to unlock the letter worlds. (and no, you can do it while dying and continuing on the same world to unlock it). Tbh, beating it 8 times and getting better at the game each time going through it kind of helped me get through the letter worlds since I was more comfortable with the game by that time. Somehow I enjoyed my overall experience with it
I think modern gamers forget that these games were meant to be played over and over again. If you try to brute force the secret levels after playing through the normal levels only once, you're going to have a bad time

Putting Odyssey at A is an absolute crime. Why is replay-ability even a factor? It’s an incredible experience through and through. You don’t even have to get all of the repetitive moons to progress through the story.

Mario Odyssey was robbed of S tier. Youre talking about it like replaying it means you have to get every moon in the game. So would replaying mario galaxy mean you need to play the game literally twice in a row?
I would rather play Galaxy twice in a row then to collect all the fricken moons in Odyssey. I think A tier for Odyssey is fair.
I know it's just your personal tastes, but Odyssey deserves better, one of the greatest games of all time.

Oof that odyssey opinion...I think the point y'all made about it being the least fully replayable 3d mario is fair BUT it absolutely has the most replayable main story. The game literally made a ton of people into speedrunners...meanwhile y'all praised bowsers fury for how replayable it is despite the fact that it's missions are super linear
You've done World and Odyssey dirty. Odyssey for the way it controls alone is one of my favourite Mario games to replay, speed run, etc. World as well, the control is so excellent and sitting and beating in a day is still as enjoyable as the first time I beat it all those years ago.

I rate Mario Bros U Deluxe S tier because I have a 5-year old and a 7-year. Nabbit and Toadette is a god-send for them, especially for the 5-year old. I don't understand the hate for Nabbit or Toadette. You don't have to play them if you don't like them. But more choices are always welcome. Up to 4 in the family can play together as well. Not all mario games had such cool co-op feature
I’m fine that they exist, but a problem is that if you’re playing with 4 people then _someone_ has to play as Nabbit or Toadette, there’s no option to have all 4 players use a non-easy character.
