I did this in my 02 dakota. One of the easiest and cost effective upgrades for the vehicle. Been using a gc tcm in dakota for over ten years no issues whatsoever. Lower rpm in top gear. Final drive changes to .67 to 1. Lowers by about 150-200 rpm on hwy. Plug and play. Once u begin driving and the speed sensor picks up,, the gauges work properly. Martin u r the man.

I am so thankful for your video on this upgrade. My local Dodge dealership was not much help when I asked them about this conversion. I have a 2001 Dakota 4.7L 45RFE 2WD with 3.92 gears, lowering highway RPM would be great. I installed a TCM from a 2003 Grand Cherokee 4.7L 545RFE 4WD, no problems at all and an instant 5-speed. Highway RPM dropped by 300-400, this made a big difference with 3.92 axle ratio. The TCM part number I used was 56044574AB.
    Thank you!

I completed my TCM trade yesterday (2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 w/ 3.55 gears and 265/70-16 tires). I used an '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee TCM that I bought on eBay for $40 including shipping. Local salvage yards were $50. Let me be clear - I am beyond pleased! This changes the drivability of the truck so much that this change should be required by law. Everything worked and shifted smoothly except the 2-3 upshift. This was very hard and harsh. I went through the relearn procedure and by shift around 10 shift cycles, this shift was normal. The button on the gearshift continues to stop the transmission at 3rd gear. On the highway, once I get to around 55 mph, the transmission is in 5th gear and the torque converter locks. This is where a HUGE difference is seen in the behavior of the transmission. Formerly, when at cruise speed and going up hills on highways, very little throttle increase was allowed before the transmission went from 4th gear and locked TC to 3rd gear and screaming RPM. The TCM simply would not allow the V-8 to use it's torque. NOW, a much greater amount of throttle is allowed in 5th locked and most hills are climbed at cruise speed with no downshift. Once a downshift happens, it is to 4th unlocked and the truck climbs away. This is a very welcome change. The truck is also noticeably quieter at cruise. I have not checked the fuel economy improvement yet, but based on the changes I have seen, I feel like Martin's results are reasonable.

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  2 роки тому

I'm glad it worked out for you. It sounds like you're very pleased with the results. And for $50 going from a 4 speed to a 5 speed, I'd say that's a pretty good buy.

Start with the lowest code number, run the diagnostic chart instructions, don't skip any steps, then work your way up through each code.. example, start at code P0740, then P0741, P0785 and so on low to high. It might be one issue causing a cascade of issues because the components share something, such as a power or ground, or data line to the computer. Hope this helps.

Came upon a forum where a guy said the transmission needs to relearn the shift points (I have 4.56 gears, probably didn't help). Lucky for me I work at a Chrysler dealer. One of my techs plugged in a 90s looking huge scan tool. Reset it, and she shifted super smooth. Leaving it here just in case someone runs into the same problem.

The HO engine also says "High Output" on the resonator. It's not perfect, as it can be swapped, but really easy and works if you can't run the VIN.
I discovered that since I got a 02 Overland a few days ago and the 4.7 HO is the only engine option for the Overland. I love it, despite the transmission being stuck in limp mode.

    Bonjour Martin,
    Very good video, thank you!
I have a question for you and for all viewers:
My JEEP Grand Cherokee WH/WK 5.7 4WD (10/2005) has 545RFE tranny with a lot of problems, according to my local transmission specialist (in FRANCE), my 545RFE needs full revision (valve manifold replacement, torque converter replacement, all seals etc...), they ask 5000€!!! it's just huge so no way for me.
I decided to buy a used one, very difficult to find 545RFE here in France but I have a possibility to buy a 45RFE transmission!
So my question is: will it fit on my JEEP with my original TCM from my 545RFE?
will it have 5 gears or still have 4 gears?
I'm wondering if this is good idea or I should try to find 545RFE instead off trying to transform 45RFE to 545RFE?
Please let your comments it's very urgent for me
Thank you and regards from France

If it works, it's a good deal for $17.
The way they describe it. It seems more of an application for a high performance engine to help give you a higher clamping force to the clutches. Not that it's gonna make the transmission shift any faster.

0:22. This video is incorrect. This Jeep TCM swap doesn't work for 99-2000 45RFE equipped vehicles. The TCM is unable to sense engine load from the ECU preventing the transmission from shifting smoothly. Ask me how I know. However, this swap is known to work in 2001-up non-Jeeps.

How would you go about adding this kind of manual shifting to the WJ's 45/545RFE and could you program a switch to change the function of the back steering wheel buttons to be your upshift and downshift paddle-shift commands? would appreciate any feedback.

The 45RFE and the 545RFE are physically the same transmission. Both are actually 6 speeds, but 1 of those gears is an alternate 2nd gear for downshifting. The "5th" gear just wasn't used in the early models for some reason, but you can change that by putting in the updated TCM.

I cannot wrap my head around getting lower RPM's on the highest gear. As I understand it, the old TCM does something like this: shifts from 1,3,4,5 and if uses 2 when downshifting. The New TCM does this 1,2,3,4,5. If the 5th gear is exactly the same ratio, how is it getting lower RPM at 65mph? Can someone explain this in layman's terms?

    • @martinbuilt

It is not the same ratio as 4th gear this is an additional gear within the transmission. It is actually capable of 8 forward gears 3 and reverse.

This lowers to 12 mph but no lower when warm. Will the Jeep TCM lower the 1-2 shift point? It would be wonderful if it did. Martin, you produce great videos, one of the few resources for the (underappreciated) 4.7 engine but a great one. I have read in some of the Dodge/Jeep forums that doing this TCM/TCU replacement for some earlier vehicles (maybe 2000 and earlier for Dodges) with the 45RFE will result in many thrown error codes and dashboard trouble lights. That is why I haven't done this mod for my 2000 Durango with the 4.7 engine. Do you know if this is the case? I believe this issue may be related to the switch from JTEC to NGC ECUs (although I think that switch happened in different years for Dodge and Jeep). Thanks!! Again, please keeping making these great videos.

Apparently the 4 to 5 speed TCM swap does work (successfully unlocks the 2nd overdrive) on the JTECs but you get error codes and the odometer glitches out. I never converted my '00 Dakota because of the uncertainty but had flawless success on my new '02.

@@P.A.C.E.automotive Yes, you have stated what I thought was the case with the JTECs and why I haven't tried this with my 2000 Durango. Curious if anyone has come up with a fix to remove those issues with the JTEC. I assume it would need to be a software fix, so it is not something I could handle. There must be someone who would like this challenge.

How can you make a 6speed to an 8speed ?

From my understanding the 545 is actually capable of eight forward speeds and 3 in reverse but you need to find someone that could write the software.

How do you feel about taking one from another jeep from a pick a parts? I have a 99 wj Laredo......and does the 5 speed TCU have a distinct look from the 4 speed?

Yeah that's where I would get it from and no they look the same. I would just get I from a 02-04 JGC with a 4.7 this will not work for the 4.0 JGC.
