Love the videos Martin I’ve done many Jeep upgrades thanks to you. I have been looking in to swapping my 4.7 to a stroker 4.0 I wish you could do a series on them many people could use some good info.
Did this 2 years ago and it's good for keeping the engine at a lower Rpm at higher highway speeds (80+ mph). Only thing I've found is it almost eliminated 4th gear, in 5th it would almost always prefer to downshift to 3rd then back up to 4th for a second and then to 5th again to stay. I know 4th and 5th ratio are very close to each other but I definitely feel Chrysler could have programmed the TCM to utilize 4th a little better. It's funny though that the government mileage ratings for 01-02 are the same as 03-04.
I just took the truck to Arizona and back, with some hilling driving. The truck would shift into 4th most of the time on the hills which brought the RPM up 600 from 2000 at 70 MPH and only downshifted once into 3rd and that brought the RPM to 3300 to 3500 at 70 MPH. I have no completes, I love it.
I've been wanting to do this 4 years ... my tyranny lost a 2nd gear so I didn't I love my durango with the 5.9 . I even swapped the rt interior in it I heard u can reprogram the tyranny to but that's neither here or there . I'm gonna swap another one in there an do this for sure. The whole time 2 years i researched it I couldn't find a dang pc
Great job Martin! my 02/03 deserves better and even if it should pull harder from 1st to 2nd gear, I'm liking it! No, I'm loving the whole idea because my Grand Cherokee was a Sept 2002 and to be quite honest, it just doesn't seem to shift like a 5 speed and I know how bad that sounds but hell's bell's, I want a Grand Cherokee that breathes fire and moves out smartly just like it has a hemi or an interceptor motor even if it has a 4.7 H.O. under the hood! It currently has 177K plus and i was going to have a fluid and filter(s) change and I was going to a trans specialist that's been in the biz since 1970 and ask him if the fluid pressure could be bumped up a bit just so that i don't have that slush bucket shift a going on! That type of shift started in about 400 miles ago and the the trans doesn't act like it has been abused but the trans filter does seem like it might seem a bit restricted although the fluid color is within reasonably good condition. Thank-You for that hot tip and regard all you video's to be valuable, through and through!!
Thank you my friend ... But we wish him a field about converting the gearbox from an automatic type 45RFE to a manual gearbox 3500NV Whether on Durango or Dakota and with the 4x4 manual duplexer And we hope to mention all the details.. Thank you .. Your Lover: AYUB FROM Saudi Arabia
On my 99 Durango 5.2L 44re trans the tcm is integrated into the pcm. The 4.7 L V8 I think was the only style motor that had the separate tcm from the pcm for the trans. Sucks to would love to have 5 speed without having to do a bunch of mods.
Hey Martin ! I just grab myself a tcm from the junkyard off a 2004 Cherokee for my 2002 ram 1500 I installed it and I didn’t have any major issues only thing is the car has really long gears now as the ram I have has a 3.51 rear end
I did the swap a year or so ago. I didn’t like how it made the truck drive. I do a lot of freeway traffic driving and the transmission constantly hunted for the right gear. It did bring the RPM down in fifth gear but I just could not stand the way it hunted all the time so I put the OEM TCU back in. Oh and I have a 2002 Dakota 4 x 4 quad cab
I tried this on my 00 Dak but it didn’t work as the computer didn’t like the TCM and gave me a warning light, all the RND lights lit up and didn’t shift right… something about a 1 wire vs a 2 wire BUS
I have a 00 Durango and heard they must reflash the TCM for this upgrade. I was told they used to do it for free, once upon a time. Who knows now. The only one who can do it is the stealer, I mean dealer..
Also, I have installed a remote start and get PRND21 with the box around them and throws the CEL if I start it 3 or 4 times in a row with the remote start. I tried finding the wire that Bulldog said to connect, but it made the wipers go haywire. I need to do some more research.. I used it all last winter with no issue. They say it can damage the TCM, but I have a spare anyway..
@@richmiller6284 I had wondered if the dealer would still do the reflash since they sent out a TSB several years ago… I guess I’ll pony up and get mine done
Hi Martin, done this mod on my Jeep 2001 KJ/Cherokee 3.7 with a 45RFE about 8x months ago. It does drop the rpm about 200rpm. Did not have to have the TCM flashed. I am from the United Kingdom, so I do not know if there is any difference, between USA/Canada spec and the Europe spec. Always love watching your videos. Keep up the great work.
If you do get a CAI can I recommend Injen brand?? I must pre state you will have to relocate your cruise control servo motor as I did. Well worth it, and you may choose to do the TCM too just for space. Stuff you seem to like to do. All the other CAI’s I could find do not come all the way to the front right of the engine bay, they stop short of an extra bend right in front of the ECM and sit over the exhaust manifold, a lot of them do have boxes. The Injen brand one does come all the way to the front corner but does not come with its own box and a deflector shield instead that l did not use. I opted to make a box that pulls from a hole in the fender that’s already there. I should make a video about it, I think it came out well for homemade box.
Yeah I checked them out looks like a pretty good intake system. What do you think of their filtration hopefully it's not like a K&N. The K&N seem to let way too much dirt through the filter.
@@martinbuilt I honestly hadn't considered the quality of the filter itself to much, just assumed it would be ok. Funny you say that when I cleaned it not much came out, some but not much, but it hadn't been a while either. If it turns out you don't like their filter its an easy switch to just about anything 3.5" that will fit in the space there.
I just bought a 2004 Dak 4x4 someone had put 3.55 rear on and it sucked for the 3.7 v6, so I bought and installed a used one with 3.92 gearing. I still drop the OD on hills or for passing; haven't pulled any of my trailers yet, but I'm running 265/75/16's, and mileage isn't that great. She runs good and I can't feel the Trans shift at all; never saw one so smooth! I am however, getting gear whine from that used rear, but it runs cool, and it had clean oil in it. Your thoughts?
The TCM stores the band adjustments and certain pressures from the old transmission. Can’t be cleared except with DRB3. Also, it’s technically unlocking 6th gear. On upshifts, the 545 (they’re all a 545RFE) is programmed to skip 3rd. So 1, 2, 4, 5 on the old programming. And then 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 on the new programming. 3rd is only used on a downshift from any of the gears higher than it. Also also, the trans may shift extremely hard from 1st to 2nd when doing this swap and will return to normal when the original TCM to that trans is reinstalled. It won’t relearn to soften the shift. Another also, removing torque management will cause zero harm no matter what no matter what. A firm(er) shift in an auto reduces heat, slip and wear and will increase life.
Let's be fair, it is an *extremely* Mopar move to build a six speed automatic, but launch it as a four speed, software update it a few years later and call it a five speed, and then wait all the way to 2012 before they finally stop calling third gear "2 prime" and call it the 65RFE.
Hello sir my name is Norm I have a 2001 Dodge Durango RT 59 with the 46re I had it rebuilt by a professional transmission guy in it for like 50 years what are the problems with it not shifting
Hi Martin. I have a 2001 Dakota 4.7 with a 45RFE transmission. Does it matter what year grand Cherokee? As long as it has a 545rfe TCM it shouldn’t matter right?
Ok, sorry not good at typing! Ok, found 2003 Dodge Durango with 187,000 miles. Engine runs smooth, transmission shifts with no problem. I like these 4.7 V8s. Your videos on these engines are so interesting. This a used car dealer and their asking $4000 for it. In you opinion good buy? What else to look for? Now a/c does work but does not blow out of the front vents, the blower works but no air! It does blow out of the rear air and it’s cold. Just asking your opinion! I am not an auto mechanic but like to dabble in it. This transmission video is interesting , what transmission would this Durango have? Not a 4x4! Thanks for your time.
The transmission is a 545RFE. It sounds like there could be a problem with the blend doors on your HVAC that could be a concern if you can't get to the blend door motor. Sometimes, the dash needs to be removed to replace that. If the body is rust free, I don't think I would give more than 35 for it
Good evening, my name is Cristiano Semenzato and I live in Brazil. I bought a Dodge dakota v8 automatic with a Magnum 5.2 engine. it caught fire in the harness and the injection module (tcm). I would like to know if you can get a module, because I saw your video changing the module and installing the five-speed. I appreciate if you can help me, may God bless you, hugs.🙏 Feedbac
@martinbuilt appearantly mine does not. I found that it's integrated into the ECM/PCM. If the ECM/PCM has 4 plugs then the TCU software is in that and not separate. The 3 plug ECM/PCM is where it has a separate TCU (ie hardware)
Hey Martin, my 01 jeep grand Cherokee is not shifting at high rpm’s, when I get to 3k rpm’s in first gear It gets stuck in 3k rpm’s and I have to let back the throttle for it to shift to 2nd, any idea of what it is ? I have the 45rfe transmission
@martinbuilt. I just tried this on my 00 Dakota, loved the way it shifted and cruising rpms on the highway, BUT, it threw a CEL. And the gear selector indicator wouldn't show a selected gear. Is there anyway to make this work or are 2000 guys out of luck?
Can the 44re (DGW) 4speed be converted to 5 speed? It's what I have on my '99 5.2L Dakota...I guess it does not. It works only the 45RFE I think...I wish I could swap a manual one but it's not that easy...
Hi Martin. I`ve problem with my "new TCM - 5 gear " ( from 45 to 545 gearbox) after replacing the TCM in my 2000 Jeep GC WJ . When I turn D or R there is a hard knock in the box - like hammer blow. After changing to the original TCM ( 4 gear ) everything is OK, maybe something need or can be reset TCM? I heard about Quick Learn. THK.
How does the O/D work after the 5 speed swap cause I tow trailers every now and then and like to kill the over drive on big hills? 02 Dakota 4.7 W 45fre.
The switch to turn off the overdrive will work normally. Believe me this is an awesome swap better gas mileage and you're still gonna be able to tow just like you did before.
@@martinbuilt Really starting to think this is why these transmissions go out at 130-150k miles. Mine has only 135k miles and it's already starting to slip on occasion when it's cold. I am thinking it's electrical. Because I can shut off the engine and turn it back on and it runs fine.
Your 98 Dakota has a different transmission, and unfortunately, this modification will not work. Yes, I still haven't gotten around to installing the front differential with the 3.92 gears. Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful New Year.
By the way I just did the electric fan swap using a 2011 Cherokee/Durango unit, and fit very well and works, great, once gets to 200°F, only works 25 or 30 seconds and turns off.
I have 2001 dakota quad cab with 4.7 auto 45rfe 2wd but just wondering when I get a 5 speed 545rfe tcm does it matter it a 4x4 or does it have to come from a 2wd vehicle.
I was wondering if 545rfe transmission from a 03 or 04 dakota work in my 2001 dakota. Mines start to go and need to replace it. Just wasn't sure as mine runs on a tcm and the 03+ runs on a pcm.
Yes. I have '99 WJ V8, swapped 01 WJ V8 TCM in instead of the original, it works. Plug and play. After installation just give the system time to adapt (drive asphalt only, don't tow for few kilometres).
Hey Martin. Just subscribed to your channel. I myself own a 04 dodge Dakota. Bought her brand new with 4 miles on her. I've done all the maintenance and repairs on her except the fuel pump which thank god it was under warranty and I just had my transmission rebuilt @ 250k miles. The hardest repair I've ever done on any vehicle I've ever owned is replacing the oil pan gasket on my Dakota! Two days! I think it would have been easier to pull the motor than the route I took. Do you know of a way to over ride the cut off on my factory driving lights when switching on the high beams? Thanks.
Thank you for subscribing. Yeah, changing out an oil Pan gasket on a Durango or Dakota is quite hard because of the 3rd member is in the way much easier on a WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. My particular Dakota does not have the driving lights but I am going to replace the front bumper and adding the driving lights I'll have to look into that I personally wasn't aware that the driving lights come on with the high beams.
With the price of gas today and you're looking at looking at 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon better, I would say a $40 investment is quite worth it. When it goes into 5th gear it is actually lowering your RPM from the 4th gear that you had before.
Yes this should work on your 3.7 as well just check out this website and make sure that you have the 45RFE transmission mission. Enter your Vin number as shown this website is case sensitive so use capital letters. Chrysler Build Sheet fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing
@@martinbuilt I definitely know it's a 45rfe, I replaced the valve body about 5 months ago. "oblong" solenoid switch valve problem. Sonnax Universal hooked me up.
@@Artlopez105 yes it should be, use the link in the description, Chrysler Build Sheet, enter the VIN number and it will give you all the information about your truck.
I've read on some forums that it's a decent mod if you have the 3.92 gears but I've heard not to do it if you have 3.55 like my 2002 Durango, grain of salt and all that, what is your take? Have you heard of this being an issue?
That's one of the things I can't stand about forums there's always someone bitching about some mod. You'll hear complaints about oh now my transmission is hunting for a gear well it's probably shifting more than it did before but of course it is you've just gained another gear so it's trying to keep it in the optimum torque range. So if you went to a 8 or 9 speed transmission how many times do you think it's going to shift then. And for a mod that cost less than $50 more like under 40 I think it's worth finding out if you like it or not. So later when Durango and Dakota went to the 545 are those people complaining that they have a 5 speed transmission and that it's hunting for a gear and wish they had the 45 instead I doubt it. Well that's my take on it.
@@martinbuilt I really appreciate the response, love your vids about the 4.7 motor, I feel like they never got enough love but I've 3 of them. I think I will take you up on that and go try for myself, and you're right for about 40-50 for the TCM I really can't go wrong.
Did this awhile ago in my 2000 WJ and I didn't gain any mpg. Instead I got a stupid downshift spot just under 50mph that annoys me like crazy. Will probably put my factory computer back in. I've had the biggest mpg gain from running 93+ octane for over a year now. Most my driving is around 60mph and I get around 25mpg on average, tanks to around 20 once the bit of city is added in. 2000 WJ V8 with Selec-trac that's always run in AWD mode. This swap is pretty crazy though, so is the tranny itself though. Think I read it could be programed to have 8 forward gears and 3 reverse...
You can go to the link that I provided below and enter your Vin number, and this will tell you exactly what transmission your truck has. Unfortunately, this will not work with your 3.9 engine. Chrysler Build Sheet fcacommunity.force.com/RAM/s/equipment-listing

Same here
To do that job on a Dakota 6 cylinder 3.9 L 4x4 quad cab, what type of TCM can be used.
This modification will only work with the 4.7 and 3.7 with the 45RFE transmission.
Sorry if I got your hopes up
@@martinbuilt Ok thanks for the information.
@@martinbuilt Another thing is that the gear feel a bit slow, there is a sensor that needs to be checked or changed.
@martinbuilt will this work in our wj’s?
Yes, it will work with WJ'S with a 4.7
late question would this work on the 2000 rt 5.9 dakota and the Tcm needs to be from an 04 Jeep Cherokee
won't work, gotta be 4.7
@martinbuilt. I just tried this on my 00 Dakota, loved the way it shifted and cruising rpms on the highway, BUT, it threw a CEL. And the gear selector indicator wouldn't show a selected gear. Is there anyway to make this work or are 2000 guys out of luck?
I have never heard it do that to any truck or Jeep Grand Cherokee before.
@@martinbuilt Crazy did you find a fix ? I have same 2000 Durango tried the resistor trick and also code reader it’s P1698
How would I know if the new TCM is a 5-speed? Unfortunately I'm in Connecticut & don't have many , if any good junkyards.
The build sheet just says 4RE 4 Speed Automatic when running my vin. Is this the upgradable one? It's a '99 Durango 5.2L. I'm ignorant to Dodge stuff.
Unfortunately, this only works for the 4.7 l engine with the 45RFE transmission.
Work on 97?
Can the 44re (DGW) 4speed be converted to 5 speed? It's what I have on my '99 5.2L Dakota...I guess it does not. It works only the 45RFE I think...I wish I could swap a manual one but it's not that easy...
Yes this only for the 45RFE transmission.
Yeah a manual transmission would be fun.
THK.
Hmm, You can try a quick learn but my understanding is that will only work for the ECM but I would give it a try.
Does this work on the 4x4 trans or is it only for the 2wd?
I believe its any 01-02 4.7 v8
Would you be ok to do a superchips tune after doing this upgrade
Yes you can.
Does the yellow and green wire number 10 disconnect work with this setup for 2002 durango 4.7?
If your 02 has JTEC ECM yes.
The ECM would have 3 electrical plugs.
@@martinbuilt Really starting to think this is why these transmissions go out at 130-150k miles. Mine has only 135k miles and it's already starting to slip on occasion when it's cold. I am thinking it's electrical. Because I can shut off the engine and turn it back on and it runs fine.
You’re the best Martin god bless
Thank you Josh I appreciate that.
Why does changing its from a 4 to 5 speed help mpg?
Because you're lowering the engine RPM once it goes into fifth gear.
@@martinbuilt ohh
Hi Martin, i'm from México and have 98 Dakota 5.2 4x4, this setup will work in my truck?
I already got a 2000 Durango 3.92 Ratio, both differentials.
Your 98 Dakota has a different transmission, and unfortunately, this modification will not work. Yes, I still haven't gotten around to installing the front differential with the 3.92 gears. Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful New Year.
@@martinbuilt thanks, wish you the same for you and your family
By the way I just did the electric fan swap using a 2011 Cherokee/Durango unit, and fit very well and works, great, once gets to 200°F, only works 25 or 30 seconds and turns off.
I have 2001 dakota quad cab with 4.7 auto 45rfe 2wd but just wondering when I get a 5 speed 545rfe tcm does it matter it a 4x4 or does it have to come from a 2wd vehicle.
The TCM can come from either a 2 or 4 wheel drive And it will work just fine
I was wondering if 545rfe transmission from a 03 or 04 dakota work in my 2001 dakota. Mines start to go and need to replace it. Just wasn't sure as mine runs on a tcm and the 03+ runs on a pcm.
Do you know anything a 42re on a 5.2 dodge dakota?
No I'm not familiar with the 42re
Is there a way to remove the speed limiter ?
Override it with a custom odb
@@marioarchuleta8723 what’s odb ?
Did a 2001 (late 2000) jeep v8 use the same tcm?
Yes. I have '99 WJ V8, swapped 01 WJ V8 TCM in instead of the original, it works. Plug and play. After installation just give the system time to adapt (drive asphalt only, don't tow for few kilometres).
Wouldn't risk 00, go for 01 TCM.
@@martinbuilt i think they get cut OFF on hi beam mode.
@@sovrgnmanI saw someone use a paper clip before . There's a custom kit that's too much . Just hard wire them in brotha with a switch . 😊
If I have a 4 speed with over drive. Would this still be worth it?
With the price of gas today and you're looking at looking at 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon better, I would say a $40 investment is quite worth it.
When it goes into 5th gear it is actually lowering your RPM from the 4th gear that you had before.
Is this trick only good for v-8s? What about 3.7L v-6 _ 45 RFE? Any benefits adding the extra gear on a v-6?
Yes this should work on your 3.7 as well just check out this website and make sure that you have the 45RFE transmission mission.
Enter your Vin number as shown this website is case sensitive so use capital letters.

@@martinbuilt I definitely know it's a 45rfe, I replaced the valve body about 5 months ago. "oblong" solenoid switch valve problem. Sonnax Universal hooked me up.
Would this be a beneficial swap for a 2000 dakota with a 3.9?
Will not work.
3.9 does not have a 45RFE transmission.
Will not work on a 2000 4.7 either.
Hey there Martin, will work with a 2003 dodge dakota 4.7L as well or only from 99-2002
You should have the 545RFE trans. The 03 Dodge has the NGC EMC with the TCM built into the EMC
@@martinbuilt so its already a 5 speed?
@@Artlopez105 yes it should be, use the link in the description, Chrysler Build Sheet, enter the VIN number and it will give you all the information about your truck.
@@martinbuilt ok 👌 thanks Martin.
So I have downloaded the information guide it is a 5 speed thanks.
Do you know of issues with doing this mod on a 2000 4.7 Dakota? I've heard about possible bus issues. Thanks in advance.
Does not work,
ALL shift range indicators light and is in limp mode, 2 gears.
Can I do this to my 44re?
Unfortunately nope 😕
will this work on a 2004 liberty?
No unfortunately it won't your transmission control is inside the PCM.
But your transmission is already a 5 speed.
@@martinbuilt I have a 2000 Durango 4.7l does 2003 trans pcm work? Or just 2004
I've read on some forums that it's a decent mod if you have the 3.92 gears but I've heard not to do it if you have 3.55 like my 2002 Durango, grain of salt and all that, what is your take?
@@martinbuiltwell stated sir
More bang for your buck ☺
8 gears but 3 of those are identical...
very nice
Thank you 😊
Nice👌

I have a 01 Dakota 3.9 automatic. How do I know what transmission I have and will this work
You can go to the link that I provided below and enter your Vin number, and this will tell you exactly what transmission your truck has.
Unfortunately, this will not work with your 3.9 engine.
